    The thing to remember about Scottish mountains is that as we're so far north, although the elevation doesn't seem that great compared to other mountains, the conditions are artic due to combination of elevation and latitude. The rainfall in the western part of the means that forest there is counted as cool rainforest. The tree loss is due to grazing by cattle and sheep, but also deer which have no natural predators. In 2022 census 77.7% of people said their identity was Scottish. Most Scots actually speak a mixture of Scottish English and Scots language. Scots language has it's own dialect. Scots is still spoken. People understand it even if they don't usually speak it.

    The reason we have different weather patterns in Scotland between east and west is that we have the Atlantic weather from the west and the colder North Sea from the east fighting against each other and giving us relatively mild winters and warm summers. I was born in Coatbridge in central Scotland where a lot of Irish immigrants came to work in the iron works, I am a proud of the fact that I was born in Scotland but because of my heritage I hold an Irish passport.

    Scottish born and raised here! Going into more depth about the lack of tree's in the highland glens etc. There is a lot of history connected to it, but the main gist is that the native ancient forests where pushed out when pine forests where planted and forestry was pushed on Scotland and such. I'd recommend looking into some great videos about it! Look up "Scotlands Lost Rainforest" that covers it quite well.
    I also identify as Scottish funnily enough aha

  • @scottneil1187
    @scottneil1187 2 месяца назад +2

    There's not a lack of trees at all, we have plenty, just not in that area. 18.5 percent is forested, the highest amount in any of the UK countries. In terms of rain, Seattle gets more than us, it doesn't rain as much as you all think. Calling a Scot British isn't likely to get you battered but calling us English might.

    • @alistairmilton6007
      @alistairmilton6007 2 месяца назад

      Much of the deforestation parts of Scotland are managed for the purpose of grouse shooting.
      Ghere is a move to reforest some of these moors with indigenous species.
      The difference in weather profiles is as was brought out by the presenter due to water falling as rain over the highland, what was not also stated is that there is a Fone effect that can occur which can increase the air temperature as a result of this precipitation.

    Some parts of Scotland in the North East are actually relatively dry. As are parts of South East England. Both areas get half the precipitation of New York though it rains on more days.
    That's in complete contrast to the West coast of Scotland and also mountainous Western parts of Wales and England where the rain can be seven times greater than the driest parts of the UK, at somewhere between 11 and 12 feet per year.
    The difference is from west to east, not north to south. The east is in often in the rain shadow of the mountains.

    I can assure folk, our winters are very often not cool, pretty far from it. 🤪 Scotland in the past was covered by trees, through the centuries they were felled, however, there are still areas that contain the great Scots pine & other tree variations. We get the Gulf Stream coming up from the Gulf of Mexico, this affects the weather as the warm currents meet cold air & thus the heavy rainfall .

    As a Borderer I'm always a bit jealous that the Highlands and Islands get all the attention when people visit Scotland.
    Yes, they're beautiful and romantic, but if you want to visit the bits of Scotland where things actually happened, the Borders are the place. So if you are thinking of a visit, please consider heading South from Edinburgh and Glasgow, as most people automatically head North.
    Especially if you're a history buff. There is a compelling argument that the Scottish Borders were, from about the Mid 13th to the Mid 17th Century the most interesting and dangerous place on earth. More the "Wild West" than the "Wild West" ever was. It was an area fought over constantly and it has a bloody history of battle, fortification, raid, religious unrest, witch burnings, mob rule, and more.
    Oh, and as you're motorsport fans . . . it's also home to some of the proudest motorsport tradition in Europe. Jim Clark cut his teeth on our roads and for a while in the 1950s and 1960s there were more motorsport circuits per head of population than anywhere else in the world between Stranraer and Berwick. If you like your racing history it's a must visit.
