Hi, I love your podcast. Wish I could donate more each month but I am retired and on a fixed budget. I am a 5th generation LDS. I have seen the ugly decisions from the top leadership. My ex husband while performing as a Branch President had numerous affairs. He was excommunicated and threw myself and children out of the family home. He moved back to Utah with his parents who are very close to top leadership. Within a year and half he was re-baptized without paying child support.(6 children). For the next 20 years he served in a counselor to Bishops and on the high counsels without paying child support. But when my Bishops challenged his worthiness, they were told the first Presidency was to be immediately called. Later my ex brother in law on his death bed told me that a devious deal was cut between one of the counselors in the first Presidency and my ex father in law to get my ex re baptized (property was involved). My former father in law paid for his son’s re-baptism. At this time I am keeping names out because I have suffered threats on my life and my children. I asked for my name to be removed. Members like Nemo are beautiful and I have been blessed with numerous LDS friends. My heart has been broken in a million pieces how the church has evolved on many issues. Christ makes it simple, love one another as I have loved you.

Love this discussion. I am a Christian never-Mormon, but have a dear lifelong friend, of 55 years, who is in the church. Long ago, i realized that I cannot discuss anything related to discrepancies in the church's teaching because that is "persecution". And for sweet Jane, as you make the daily decision of whether to stay or go, please remember that in Matt 7:20 ("by their fruits...") Jesus refers to false prophets, not the members. Interesting how often I have heard a prophet of the church reference this scripture inaccurately, applying it to the the members and the good deeds of the church, itself - not to themselves.

It's admirable that you are still holding your head high. I've been in and out of the church since I was 18. I had went through horrible things with member's and bishops and when I asked questions or pushed back I was told that everyone is human and we don't know what God has planned for the future or what myself or the people involved needed to learn from the experience. I went through the temple 2 year's ago. I had so many questions and did not feel like I could ask them. Then I moved to Springville UT, Utah County! I've since done a lot more studying and have stepped back out. I found a non-denominational church that just teaches Christ and the scriptures. I need Christ in my life! What I get told all the time though is, "You need to be going to your own church because Satan is winning the battle because you have broken your promises and covenants." My personal family says this too. It just blows me away that a church that is called "The Church of Jesus Christ," misses the mark about Christ and his teachings all of the time. Thank you for your courage ❤

I enjoy people who are LDS members and still freethinkers. My husband and I were in a very horrible situation we moved across the country to Arizona, where we knew nobody but his ex-wife and kid. We were going through a very hard time in our marriage. He relapsed, and then I followed. But My brother had become a member years prior and converted and moved to Arizona, so it was kind of ironic that we were there too.
I really wanted to be holy, and I had been baptized in many different churches in many different denominations with no luck. Every person I met in the Baptist church, or the nondenominational churches were pretending while at church to be good holy people and then after church, they were totally different.
    I was tired of that.
I wanted to meet people that were the same all the time and honest. On the first day that I woke up and decided I wanted to be clean I also made a promise to speak no word that isn’t true I wanted to be honest like Jesus and I thought, if I’m honest all the time, maybe the other characteristics will start to come along as well. My brother, he called me and asked if I wanted to meet with Missionaries, so I agreed and it was funny because I had seen a woman while attending a sacrament meeting that I could not stop looking at. She had the most beautiful eyes and there was just something about the way she looked, she was on my mind ever since. When I opened the door to welcome the Missionaries into my home, she was with them.
I knew right then, and there was the path I needed to take.
I freely spoke about my past of addiction, corruption, abuse, depression, and my attempt to end my own life.
They did not judge me. In fact, they were really surprised that I was still alive and they felt that there was a purpose I was still alive. After they left that day, I knew this was the place I needed to be one of the missionaries left a card and I still have that card and it’s laminated. It was a picture of the savior and I don’t know why it stuck out to me so much but it did and then I turned the card over.
    “James 1:5
I fell down to the floor on my knees, crying because that scripture is MY favorite.
I was incarcerated in 2014 and that was the very first book out of the Bible that I read from beginning to end and that was the first verse I highlighted and it was as if my Truth had come full circle James is also the name of the man who introduced my husband, and I and sadly took his own life while we were all living together. He was my husband’s best friend.
I told my husband who was working out of town and still using at the time and he was flabbergasted because I had made it very clear I was not interested in that church.
My husband agreed to meet with Missionaries and I asked him to stop bringing the drugs home with him and he respected that boundary. Eventually he got clean too.❤
I started watching book of Mormon stories, I watched prophet of the restoration, I also came across a Broadway musical called the book of Mormon. It was actually a comedy created by an ex member who is also the creator of South Park. The musical thoroughly entertained me and intrigued me, because everybody looked so happy and joyful, and that is what I was missing .
I researched the dirt on the church when My brother started investigating the church years prior.
I didn’t let him know what all I found out, but I learned all the dirt of the church before I ever became an investigator.
It was as if this time Christ had given me the lens I needed to sift through the dirt and find the golden nuggets.
My husband and I began reading the book of Mormon every night before bed. We have been doing that since we were asked in August 2019 by the missionaries for the 1st time we have not missed one single night of reading the scriptures. Rain or shine sick or well.❤
We kept reading, and we kept going to the sacrament meetings, and my husband began to like a lot of the people, and he wanted to be like them, and this made me very happy because I did too. I wanted to be holy, and I wanted to be honest.
We were baptized 9/28/2019 together. And the church because we were paying money before we became members, They came together during the fast offering and they paid our car payment up three months because it was three months behind and about to get repossessed and they also paid for us a hotel room for two weeks because we were recovering addicts, and we had a lot of debt.
They helped us with groceries for a couple months, and then we got out of the hotel and got into an apartment and they surprised us with another offering taken up to help help us get into that apartment and it was so monumental because that apartment it was only $1200 for us to move in. It was at
Lease takeover. It was such a blessing. We knew it was a blessing from God.
And we thrived, and we will always consider Tempe Arizona, our home, and the Grandview ward our church.
I moved with my husband to Salt Lake City two years ago and the culture here is terrible. I’ve got a young lady with two kids. She’s a single mom she just got baptized into the church and she needs two twin mattresses from DI for her kids , the bishop brings her two foam mattresses from his house that his kids use when they go camping.
I don’t understand why you would give somebody something like that when the church creates all of these things and all of these jobs for people to make what is needed and they give it to those who are in need. It makes no sense to me they are judgmental out here towards people of different ethnicities.
If you are seeing with a tattoo that has numbers, they assume you are a member of a gang.
The bishop doesn’t counsel you if you need financial help or assistance, he sends you to these elder missionaries, and the woman is very racist and very rude. I suffer with Crohn’s disease and I am not able to work because of it. She is insisting that I apply for disability, and I said disability isn’t going to help me today.
And I’ve never asked for help again. We just wanted two weeks worth of groceries. We didn’t know that I was going to be expected to go volunteer at DI, which makes no sense because Malachi says absolutely nothing about volunteering somewhere and paying what’s expected ….
My husband stood up for me and said if she can’t even walk the dogs without folding over why would you want her to push her physical limits at DI for five hours? Like why is it a requirement to volunteer somewhere? In order to get help? We’ve never heard of that before.
They were judgmental towards my friend who just got baptized.
She’s got a tattoo triple fives on her chest it’s something about her sister it’s a memorial tattoo. She was attacked by these elder missionaries and accused of being a gang member and the whole time that she’s trying to get help. They’re like well we don’t help people outside of our membership anymore.
I told her that’s BS. We most certainly do help people outside of our memberships, my goodness.
The bishop works out of town sometimes out of the country. He’s never here. I don’t understand why the man even took the calling.
I understand him bringing the mattresses are temporary, but he still hasn’t written her a voucher for DI. She’s been off ever since she got baptized on Saturday she could’ve been to DI five times over and gotten mattresses if he would’ve simply gotten her a voucher.
Utah is completely different than Arizona when dealing with the latter day culture.
You’ve got people out here telling new converts they can’t be baptized If they have a medical marijuana card, they can’t be baptized if they have roommates of the opposite sex, they can’t be baptized if they drink any caffeine whatsoever, and none of those things are true. That might’ve been true for the elderly women who were walking her through her baptism, but it’s not true today and she spoke to the bishop on the day of her baptism. That is when he spoke to her like I thought the bishop spoke to you long before you got baptized to make sure you want to be baptized.
How is the bishop supposed to make sure that you are ready for baptism if he only talks to you after you have it done because that’s when he wanted to schedule the talk and I told her no you demand that he get on the phone with you today or you’re not getting baptized. I told her because I am moving in the next few weeks that she needs to utilize the handbook anytime she has a question.
It’s totally out of order, but I don’t wanna leave my faith because I have seen the love provided by members and I have felt the spirit in many moments in the temple and also in the wards.
I am happy to find a fellow member who feels the same way and understands❤
I was really disappointed when I came to Utah and learned the church culture.
I really hope that those of us who see the behavior can change this place from the inside, somehow

The most significant aspect that I regret in my decision to leave the Church, which I made 15 years ago, is that I cannot make a difference from the inside. I am glad that there are people like Nemo who remain in the Church despite being grossly aware of its flaws. Truly, those of us on the outside will not make as much impact as those on the inside. I suppose the inside is slower and will take about 30 more years for people of the last two decades to truly reach the top of the Church. After what I learned, I just could not attend anymore.

I came to this realization after 20+ years in the church, I can't live a lie. When asked about do I believe the B of M, D & C, etc. are records as claimed to be, that I can support and sustain those who are called General Authorities, my answer has to be - NO.
There are hundreds if not thousands of artifacts in the UK which show Roman legions were present for approximately 300 years. The Book of Mormon claims to be a record of a people, a much larger population than the Romans in England, of about 1000 years. That turns out to this day to be a work of great imagination, even to the point where the Hill Cumorah pageant is gone and there's not the same claims about the people who died and buried the plates anywhere near this location.
What makes that all an even more egregious lie, DNA evidence of Native Americans doesn't support the claim they're descendants of the Laminates. Another huge strike against authenticity.
What of the claims about the Book of Abraham? Certainly another fundamental assertion about Joseph Smith being able to translate any ancient records. He couldn't even pick the nearest milienia, let alone that it was a funeral text.
Then we had for decades, the denial of Joseph Smith connection to polygamy by church leaders. The excuses such as, there were many more righteous females to males, therefore they needed to be married to these poor husband less women. As it turns out, some of them were already married, and if the "brethren" were inspired to take your wife, then you would be blessed beyond your imagination for allowing the "Prophet" to mate with your wife. If some were sealed to Joseph, and he was killed, several ended up being married to Brigham Young. Why was this necessary? They were already going to be with Joseph Smith when they died. Problem solved!
There are many more problems, including institutional racism.
You can pull out a list of anachronisms in the B of M. At what point do you say to yourself, I've exceeded my level of the consumption of horse squeeze?

When you have authority in a church that professes to be led by Jesus Christ Himself, honesty should be the basest quality that a leader could have. We are not seeing this, therefore, what do we have? What are their fruits? Jacob 5, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Mormon 8, 2Nephi 28 all show what the latter day LDS gentile church is and how it is leading their members to “hell” or darkness.

    Something else--consider this:
    1. Nowhere in Scripture does it say a priest or an elder needs sanction and a special dispensation from a bishop or above to bless the Sacrament for his own household. In fact, the brethren imposed that clause to prevent families and individuals from worshipping at home, and thereby reducing obeisance and payments to the brethren.
    2. When a priesthood-holder is excommunicated, the church says "amen" to his priesthood. But if he returns, he is rebaptized, after an additional arbitrary punative period, the stake president comes and says, "You can use your priesthood again." No new ordination.
    Sooooo....
Exercise the priesthood. In your room, or flat, or cottage, or tent, or house, or car, or carriage, etc., you are the key-holding prophet, apostle, seventy, area authority, stake present, bishop, branch president, etc. Bless the Sacrament at home. Give blessings. Conduct church services at home in a way that speaks to you and your families.
And I suspect we can ordain within our families. If my family comes on board, I'll gladly ordain the women of my household, and together we'll share the priesthood.
The corrupt brethren can go f- themselves. And I don't pay them tithes. They only ever spat and shat on me, so now supporting my family is my tithe to the Lord.

Hi Nemo, I love your program and plan to donate to you.
Son of a Scottish immigrant here. I was thinking about you this morning and I wanted to contact you about an idea I have for you about a story you could do for your podcast. Years ago as a kid growing up I used to read the Church News that would come in the newspaper on the weekend. In every edition they had a section where it listed the new stakes created or reorganized that past week. It mentioned the new leadership of the stakes and mentioned what the members of the presidency did for a living. Reading this weekly paper for years, I started to notice a trend in the occupations that Stake leadership were called from. It was very revealing. I started to put them in categories and noticed they kept repeating. I had an idea about ten years ago and started to write a paper to submit to Sunstone or other Mormon scholarly papers, and started to review years and years of data, I but got distracted with life and other things and didn’t finish it. But I think this something you should do. Some may ask why would their choice of profession is relevant. But it shows that the church values some professions more than others when it comes to their pool of particular candidates for higher leadership. Why is the question? Some of it is obvious. But some trends were bizarre in some choices. For example, there’s a huge number of Stake leadership who have a former background in church facilities ( keeping the power on, clearing the pipes, maintaining the grounds, etc). Found that interesting. They were already in the employ of the tithepayor previously. Some of them were fairly predictable. A lot of professionals ( doctors, lawyers, dentists, CPAs, etc). Lots of Seminary and Institute instructors. A lot of people who own their own businesses. 😢. A lot of professors from Church universities. I could go on and on in the trends.
Anyway, I think this would be a groundbreaking paper if it was ever done properly. I would encourage you to do it. Would be glad to help. I have a degree in history.

I am extremely frustrated by the Church's constant mantra that it does not tolerate abuse in any form when they do. This is a lie and completely false in my multiple cases of abuse that the Church has not only tolerated but covered up and sought to silence me. I have started a community on Reddit, called MormonAbuse, for victims to be able to share their stories. The covering up of abuse by the Church and their legal department must stop! It is unconscionable that I reported serious and serve abuse by Church members and as an employee of the Church but yet the Church refused to hold the abusers accountable (One abuser was married to a McConkie) and protected/shielded the abusers. Yet, because I tried to get answers I was threatened by my local leaders and Church attorneys.
I am still a member of the Church but I imagine if I won't stop speaking about the abuse that the Church is covering up then they will excommunicate me. I have already opposed the sustaining of those that are covering up the abuse and have been threatened by the Church for doing so. I have also been threatened for trying to communicate this breach of the Church Handbook of Instruction, by my Stake president, to senior leaders of the Church. I was told my senior leaders sanctioned these threats and agreed with them.
No longer does the Church try to amicably resolve concerns but rather threaten members who have concerns and will not communicate with them in a civil way. Rather, they simply want the members to shut up and do as they are told (as in my case).
I have made the same statements to my Stake President that you have (That he failed me, etc.). My leader doesn't care, he won't speak to me further about my concerns or work with me to understand my side. More and more the Church is turning dictorial.

God is a God of truth, and if we claim to follow God, we should be willing to accept truth wherever it may come from. Even if it goes against our previously held beliefs. I was a Brigham Young defender for 47 years, until just last year. I am now of the belief that polygamy started with Brigham Young (as did many other false teachings), based on the primary source documents I have been shown in the last year. I believe he was an impostor, just as Joseph had said. It AMAZES me how many LDS people have said to me, "Why does it matter?". REALLY??!! Why does the truth matter? Well, for one thing the scriptures teach us what happens to those who "lie and love lies". And if one's entire belief system is built upon sand and has no foundation.... that is catastrophic!
I had my named removed from what I now see as Brigham's church last May, and I respect you for doing what you can while still a member of the church. Kudos to you! I think that is great. We need all kinds of people doing what they feel called to do, whether in or out.

First, thank you for having these open discussions I think it’s needed in all congregations and all churches. Accountability and responsibility is important when leading any type of group.
I have a lot to say but will just start with this, tithing is a spiritual law, meaning it’s truly between you and God and what you decide is income. The bishop is an agent of God and imperfect you hope you can have an open discussion with him about these things but ultimately they share their opinion and understanding of the gospel and you say then, if you consider yourself worthy of temple recommend. In other words what’s the problem here when you really just have to go directly to God for your answers of worthiness and whether or not you should continue to follow church leaders. Church leaders always was and always will be imperfect and fallible. Imagine the days of Christ, you hear Peter preach a doctrine and he communicated it differently than Christ did last week or from what Matt shared the week before, who do I believe even if they contradict each other? Well, Jesus Christ of course because we know he’s the only perfect person. So if that’s the soul truth than all your answers lay in your relationship with God the father and Jesus Christ. It’s that simple!
Church leaders are always supposed to point you to Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost for all your answers. When people put all their trust in other imperfect people including the Prophet than you will feel slighted, deceived, maybe even hurt because he’s a human being just like you and I.
In fact I find it spiritual laziness for a person to constantly come to church leaders for answers to questions that they may already have the answers to or have not thought it out in their minds and asked God first.
I believe that is the biggest problem here is we have fallen to a state that we are so dependent on the leadership rather than focusing on your privilege to directly receive revelation for yourself and your family.

I’m a fan of the idea that your god, whether you’re conscious of it or not, is whatever you sacrifice to. To me, that makes the LDS church’s god their public image, their authority, and their money because they sacrifice things as sacred as honesty and child safety to preserve them, all the while preaching Jesus with their mouths.

    It’s not complicated.
    Facts -> Logic -> Conclusions.
Reasonable differences arise through that process, which thought diversity is a good thing. But when we’re starting with the end in mind with such rigidity that we have to debate why honesty matters…what in the world are we doing???
BTW, I had a very similar experience with my local leaders in raising concern about the SEC issue. I walked my bishop through the public documents, including the deceptive nature of the PR statement, and he agreed that the concern was valid. He escalated the concern to the SP who happened to work for the Office of the First Presidency, and he acknowledged they’re getting that concern a lot these days but they’re only referring members back to the PR statement. My bishop told him this response was entirely inadequate, given that the I had several questions that were not addressed by the PR statement and one of the main concerns was the about the PR statement, itself. We received nothing else.
When D&C 107 explicitly says none are exempt, but the brethren hold themselves beyond reproach, I just don’t know what is to be done. I am so heartbroken over the loss of what this faith gave me when everything seemed to add up. It can still be that way if the brethren would just root out the pride and dishonesty. But I’ve lost all hope as long as Oaks is in power.

Acts of omission and tight lipped secrecy with cards held close to the chest is still very much in order. I don’t think that word means what they think it means. You 4 do. That’s not how this life works, however. You’re trying to be prudent, and I commend that, and you should be wise at church. What I would ask is this question: At what point do you accept that your point has been heard? That your leaders might know things in their position they cannot tell you. You have to trust your leaders at some point.

What good is a constitution in an institution if the institution is run by an unelected official.

I have a few important questions: As Prophet Seer and Revelator has been removed from his title and he's now just the President of the corporation, why are the 12 still called Apostles? Why did the pope meet the 'prophet' inside the temple in Rome? Why put the LDS temple right next to vatican city? Why teach the 2nd coming without teaching about the 24 plates as mentioned in the Book of Ether? If the Church of Christ still owns the temple lot, how is the Missouri temple in Zion relevant?

You can leave a church, just don't leave GOD. God is great. The truth will set u free.

Don't expect the church members to go after the lost sheep. They are too afraid of being contaminated.

The leaders of the church dodge you for the same same reason that lay members of the church dodge conversations about the hard things. To them, it’s all beside the point. A “distraction,” to quote Richard G Scott, that undermines faith in the Savior. With that huge assumption that a divine being known as Jesus Christ actually leads the church, that makes perfect sense.
But since so much of the doctrine and even the procedural aspects of the church are logically inconsistent, I personally came to the conclusion that something that claims to be the work of an omniscient being should at the least be logically consistent. And unchangeable. And I did not see the god portrayed by the church meeting that standard. Evidence should matter and should not be dismissed. Yet that is what the church required of me to continue to belong to it.
I appreciate you doing your part Nemo. The only thing I knew how to do was to resign and wash my hands of it all completely. I saw early on in my deconstruction that I would not be able to make one bit of difference in a theocratic institution that relies on thought stopping to perpetuate itself.

      @jacobsam. Why do we need
an "explanatory" video on Nemo's membership status?
And why should he provide one?
Everything he says speaks for itself. Are "we" listening?

    2 Nephi 28
9 Yea, and there shall be many which shall teach after this manner, false and vain and foolish doctrines, and shall be puffed up in their hearts, and shall seek deep to hide their counsels from the Lord; and their works shall be in the dark.
10 And the blood of the saints shall cry from the ground against them.
11 Yea, they have all gone out of the way; they have become corrupted.
12 Because of pride, and because of false teachers, and false doctrine, their churches have become corrupted, and their churches are lifted up; because of pride they are puffed up.
13 They rob the poor because of their fine sanctuaries; they rob the poor because of their fine clothing; and they persecute the meek and the poor in heart, because in their pride they are puffed up.
14 They wear stiff necks and high heads; yea, and because of pride, and wickedness, and abominations, and whoredoms, they have all gone astray save it be a few, who are the humble followers of Christ; nevertheless, they are led, that in many instances they do err because they are taught by the precepts of men.
15 O the wise, and the learned, and the rich, that are puffed up in the pride of their hearts, and all those who preach false doctrines, and all those who commit whoredoms, and pervert the right way of the Lord, wo, wo, wo be unto them, saith the Lord God Almighty, for they shall be thrust down to hell!
16 Wo unto them that turn aside the just for a thing of naught and revile against that which is good, and say that it is of no worth! For the day shall come that the Lord God will speedily visit the inhabitants of the earth; and in that day that they are fully ripe in iniquity they shall perish.

I used to watch a lot of Nemo's videos from the early days of his channel, he had a clear message of wanting to challenge issues within the church and put them right. This has clearly progressed to where he is now just anti the church. Why hasn't he just left, my opinion is there is far more to gain for him to be excommunicated by the church with regards to building his channel than just leaving. It would add a lot more prestige to his brand and help build his channel (which it would seem to now be his full time job) within the anti church community by being excommunicated.

Every time I see one of these videos by former Mormons, or in this case, a current, but disgruntled Mormon, I have to wonder why you guys put up with this? Are you so invested in this “church“ that you don’t want to start over with a new? Are you embarrassed to leave because of all the time you wasted? I’m not saying other denominations, first of all, I don’t believe that Mormonism is Christianity but anyway, none of these human organizations is perfect, but at least most of the other ones are not so blatantly money - grubbing. All of these stories about abuse of children, all of these crooked schemes to make hundreds of billions and donating barely 1000,000,000 etc. I would love one time to see a video by someone who is not, a mouthpiece for the church to tell us what good this organization does. We know women have no power, we know children have no power, we know they expect you the ties, but then they invest that money for who knows what, what does the Mormon church do for its members? besides brainwash them?

Ok, I have to chime in here. I have also had my disputes with the Church authorities, written a letter which I gave to my bishop to send in to the first presidency, and the way it was ignored I felt they were just sweeping problems under the rug and supporting lower authorities in their wrongness, because of the inability to acknowledge wrongness (the true church can't be wrong)
just trying to say, I've been there, done that, and spent half of my life inactive and rebellious against the church. finding faults and imperfections across the board.
and I have to say that "the church handbook" is possible the WORST THING that has ever happened to the church. What happened to doing everything in the church as the spirit directs? in the time of Joseph Smith, it was an entirely different church run by the spirit and abounding with miracles. now it is more like a bunch of McDonald franchises run by a handbook.
    BUT
events in my life have brought me back to Faith. Not in "the church" but in GOD!
so first, Nemo, let me state that YOU HAVE BEEN ORDAINED TO THE PRIESTHOOD OF GOD! Full stop. your worthiness to use it is between you and GOD. it is the power to move mountains, change rivers from their courses, set at defiance the armies of nations, and stand in the presence of GOD. etc. and unless the Prophet revokes it. Start acting like a son of God. and USE IT.
We need to stop worrying about the organization, and just live in Christ. Thank GOD that you have actually received an authorized Baptism and the priesthood and the Holy Ghost. you have Checked all the boxes. now live in Christ.
