If the stake center is already at the limits imposed by the zoning regulations then the church needs a temple that is bigger because it is the temple. If this is the case then they, the church, boxed themselves in.
One question on context: why is the”church” able to force this point at all? Did the town sell a plot of land ahead of time and now the “church” wants to build something they can’t due to building restrictions?
They do it to keep the flow of tithing money going. Members must pay to enter the temple and having a temple recommend is a status symbol. So glad I'm an ex-Mormon.
US version of Jammie dodger is Knott’s raspberry shortbread cookie, and Pepperidge Farm makes one but I have never seen the pf in my area here in Texas
It’s frustrating to see this “tower”. The folks of Fairview are still not going to like it because it continues to be too tall and will cause the light pollution they have been concerned about. The new one story looks nice but does the church design a spire in proportion to the structure (like the Birmingham temple)?? Of course not!!!!
What's horrible is that ever since ancient times a spire is a phallic symbol so what are the implications of needing such a large one anyway?? Is it similar to the thought of men buying certain kinds of cars to make up for a few things. I know, I know...how dare I go there? But, maybe it applies more than thought.
Just build it in the bottom of deep crater so nobody will have to see it. In fact, put a dome over it that blocks their light from darkening the night skies.
Crazy idea: since the land is adjacent to the Stake Center, why not create a community space that can be used for interfaith bridge building, member bonding and development, and missionary work? The temple can go to a proper zoning. Of course, I would be shocked if they did something so sensible. Only one of the four missions of the Church seems worthy of resources at the moment.
That Fairview temple redesign is so phallic it is going to inspire nicknames that everyone in town will know about and use. Not a good idea. In Rome there is a building they call the Wedding Cake, celebrating Vittorio Emanuele II. That's an example of a fairly neutral nickname. Fairview temple, as proposed, is not going to fare so well. The tower badly needs fixing.
What I don’t understand is why they are pushing for this temple at all. Dallas temple is only 20 minutes away from Fairview. They are having a hard enough time staffing the Dallas temple and getting enough people to attend. Sounds like a move to bankrupt Fairview and stretch the members so thin that they break. Maybe that is what they are up to breaking the members in that area.
The “golden ratio” argument is so funny to me. The only people who think Mormon temples are pretty are folks who grew up being told so over and over. For those of us who grew up outside of the Mormon church, they generally are perceived as weird looking and poorly proportioned, like an uncanny AI rendering of a religious building
The Lords design and purpose of the Temple and the prophets design and purpose are two different things. The prophet had cast a blanket of smoke and mirrors over the structure the Lord created to disorient and control the members. Christ isn't at the head of this church. He is the head of the truth. The prophet is the head of this phony blanket he's thrown over the truth. Luckily the truth is built of stone and this blanket of lies will burn away and all those " follow the prophet" members will be oblivious like the robots of obedience they've been conditioned to be.
The Articles of Faith need to be changed from: We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law. TO: We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law, except when it interferes with temple building, zoning regulations or anything which will decrease our tithing revenues. Now does fasting for a temple in Birmingham, does that mean that the local fast offerings will now go towards the temple and not to feed and help the poor as was intended?
Fairview, Utah was founded in 1859. The first settlers from Mt. Pleasant named the area North Bend, but the town's high elevation and view of the valley inspired the name Fairview in 1864.
Peek Freans! (in Canada, maybe US as well?) Still too tall for the temple, but with how aggressive and bullying the church has been on this, I'm greatful they've come down at least somewhat
I used to frequent Fairview TX. There are a lot of very large Mega Churches already in that area. I honestly think it would improve the look of Fairview.
There is another town that I used to frequent further north in Bonham TX. The local town did not want a chapel to be built in the city limits and there was a major uproar about it. So the church found some property just outside of town and built the chapel there. Guess what, when the church had an open house there were several people saying how beautiful the church is and asked why they didn't build the church in town.
How the church is throwing its weight around is not good for its image. It’s ego running wild. Brigham Young once said the church would struggle more if it came into wealth than it would if it were in poverty. When you can buy politicians and lawyers the result is always ugly. The lack of respect for the communities these temples are being built in is pretty sad. Also expecting the members to lie about the purpose of steeples shows the church needs better ethics in it’s organization. One prophet warned against pride and said to avoid it. I would say the church leadership need to heed that warning.
I didn’t think anyone outside the elected officials in Fairview could be more Bigoted, but was I wrong. Did any of the jaded commentators actually examine the proposal? It was completely consistent with the ordinances in Fairview or with any previous zoning changes the city had done. The city’s town council agreed that the proposal was in complete compliance with the city’s ordinances. For example, the original proposed height was no higher than a Protestant church that was approved. Building of temples offers increased opportunities for people of different backgrounds and beliefs to unite. Bitterness, slander, misinformation, and hatred do not advance the cause of community improvement.
Fairview granted the CUP to the Methodist Church, including conditions that the Church had to meet for the Bell Tower to be approved. The source document is "Fairview Planning & Zoning Meeting Sept 14, 2006. The church couldn't meet the conditions, so they removed the bell tower from the design.
