    Been there, done that with the sanding through the veneer and you did a smashing job of fixing your mistake. I highly recommend putting the sandpaper away and investing in card scrapers. They make it harder to ruin the veneer as well as leaving a much smoother, clearer surface that really pops with an oil finish since it slices the wood rather than clogging the pores with scratches. Unbelievable difference.

    • @GM_Design
      @GM_Design  Год назад

      that’s great advice, I do have card scrapers but tend to go straight for the sand paper! I will take your advice in the future and give them a go 👍 thanks, glad you liked the end result 😀

    love the new look, and the gold gilt a nice touch, didn't like the legs, but needs to be off the ground, I think someone already suggested round stub legs, I would agree, do like Art Deco style.

    The Art Deco look is BREATHTAKING! It needs legs... you can maybe screew the front legs after adding a thin plywood on top of the wood blocks that suuport these legs. This will make the bar stable. If you add legs to this awesome piece please share its new look. I really enjoyed this restoration - makeover. Thanks so much for sharing.

    I love it!!!!! What a delightful difference the 2 tone and gold has made! I definitely preferred the legs as it is so short, but that's a bad back talking 🤔. You have done a wonderful job on this beauty 🤗

    I love it !! The plain gold glass looks better than the striped, it was too busy and unappealing to the eye. Once you gave it an Art Deco vibe, it looks better without the legs. 😊😊

    I felt your pain on this one Gary. It’s So annoying when you go through nice veneer but your plan B was spot on. I did chuckle as soon as you started replacing the back, I was praying you didn’t nail it all on before you realised. 😂 Great job buddy. PS I defo prefer it without the legs 😀👍

    Glad you made that oops while sanding because this piece turned out great! Have you ever watched the Agatha Christie Poirot episodes on RUclips? The character's apartment was decorated in the Art Deco style and the furniture as well as his building is just lovely!

    I love what you did with it! Absolutely beautiful. The only thing I could suggest is that as you painted the pulls, you had painted all the hardware too. The golden mirrors held on with golden corner tabs, etc. I really like the two toned Art Deco look.

      I second this - my ONLY nit would be all the silver hardware, I noted this right away. Beautiful result otherwise. Mistakes are just opportunities! 😊 I like it without legs, but you could also use shorter ones still in the Deco style. Great work!

    I have an identical cabinet and having just moved home with it, when empty they are really unbalanced when empty. Even pulling the top handle makes the whole piece tilt forward. But some filled bottles in the lower cabinet balances it perfectly, even with the lit top part filled with glasses.

    Outstanding Bob Rossing it! So glad you put all the “tools of the trade” in their spots - I wouldn’t have had a clue otherwise! I am curious about the gold leaf - there were hardly any marks between the sections after it was added. How were you able to work with it to get those evened out & not have it rip? Did the glue help with that? Also - because I can be quite challenged this way - do you take photos of how things like the hinges on the top are put together so you know how they go back on? And - was your original plan for the bar to be all one color? How did you decide on this gorgeous design after having to redirect?

    • @GM_Design
      @GM_Design  Год назад +1

      I like to slip in a few quirky references if I can 😀 The gold leaf I used wasn’t the real stuff so it did seem a bit thicker & stronger than the real gold leaf, a good glue/size helps and not trying to apply till it’s virtually dried and just a tad tacky. Then finishing off by burnishing it with something smooth. Yep I try and take photos but sometimes forget, which can cause issues when reinstalling, happens quite a lot 😂 Original plan was to keep it all one colour but actually think it’s finished up better like this and the pattern was determined by where the “boo boo’s” were and what areas needed covering up and I like art deco so this idea came to mind. 👍

    I have this exact cabinet. I need to do some repairs on it as theres some chipped bits near the bottom. I also bought a kit to hopefully get the light working again. I also plan to leave the mirrors as they are even tho they are not in pristine condition.
    I like the idea you came up with, but would've probably gone with a lighter contrast color.

    I really like the look of it compared to how it started. But, if I'm being totally honest, I don't think that the handles (which were nothing special to start with) suit the Art Deco look. I know there's the argument between preserving and modifying, but I think some better handles would really make it pop.
