AMAZING RESTORATION OF AN UGLY ANTIQUE SIDE TABLE using French Polish Finish | Furniture Restoration

  • This little table was pretty severely damaged. The back piece was broken into many pieces and the drawer was missing it's bottom! There was simply no finish left on this antique mahogany side table or night stand.
Underneath all this damage I saw hope that I could restore it to it's original splendor! Since it was made of mahogany, I thought it would also be a good project to use a French Polish as the final finish. I had never tried using a French Polish before so you can see for yourself how hard it is for a newbie to apply!
I sought guidance from another RUclipsr, Fabian's Tiny Workshop, regarding how to apply a French Polish Finish. So, I give a great big shout out and thank you to my German counterpart, Fabian, for his very informative video, "How to Apply French Polish."
Below is the link with his detailed instructions:
    • How to French Polish -...
I also used a new product that is just now being released, the Rock Rocker DUST FREE table saw. Anyone that has ever used a table saw knows what a mess they make throwing dust EVERYWHERE. (I even have to clean my ears after using it inside because I find dust in my ears!) I was sent one of these table saws to test and I accepted it with the condition that I will be honest in my review so they were taking a risk that I might not like it and will then tell my viewers this! After using it to cut some plywood for this table I can honestly say that I really DID like it! AND THERE WAS NO DUST! It was amazing! Watch the video to see my review and to see it in action.
Rock Rocker is giving A 10% DISCOUNT TO MY VIEWERS to purchase this on Amazon so you will receive OVER $100 off the regular retail price!!
Below is the link and the discount code for my viewers is FORFFP10 (10% OFF)
    www.amazon.com...
I do not know how long this promotion/discount will be in effect so don't delay if you are interested in getting one of these table saws.
This video has spoken explanation how to do a French Polish finish as well as my review of the table saw. The remainder of the video is only shop sounds so it is like you are looking over my shoulder as I work!

I was very lucky as my grandfather taught me how to French polish. He had been a headmaster before he retired so he could teach. The wad of material that you apply the polish is called a rubber by the way. The first thing I polished on my own was a burr walnut veneered pie crust table. Like you I have no idea how many coats but it looked like it had a piece of glass over it. It was amazing until my dad put his glass of gin and tonic on it. Shellac dissolves in alcohol. So I had a lovely ring on the table.
Took it all off and used varnish.
That piece is beautiful and I hope you keep up with the French polishing, it brings wood to life.

I'm not too convinced that the French Polish method was any better than just applying shellac the normal way. After you did the other work on the piece, it was going to look great regardless. It looked like something you found a dumpster. And now it's a beautiful piece of furniture.

Not a great idea if kitty does what kitties do when marking turf. Cat pee will partially dissolve shellac. The better finish would be epoxy or boat bottom paint.

I did not even have to turn down the volume on the clips when I was using it. I always have to turn down the volume when I am sanding. The company just increased the discount another 10% so if you are interested it getting one, now is the time. The Dewalt version is $650.

My grandfather taught me how to French polish. The first piece I did myself was a burr walnut veneer pie crust table. I was so happy. Took it to show my dad and he put his glass down on it. He was having an evening drink. Alcohol dissolves shellac, that’s how you make the polish. So it was just finished with a ring of polish melted. I could have cried. So, off it came and varnish went on. By the way my grandpa called the pad you apply the polish with, a rubber. Don’t know if that’s an English thing or not but that’s how he referred to it.

It is a stunning restoration of a junk furniture. Please accept my congratulations. I would like to make 2 suggestions hope you don't mind:
    1. I observed using a a little bit heavy metal hammer while joining the drawers as well as nailing them. I feel using a soft fiber head hammer for wood joining and a small hammer for nailing.
    2. You have done a wonderful finishing for the furniture. Still, if you apply a coat of Polyurethane then the shining would be much more impressive and protect it for a longer time. Definitely it won't disintegrate the base paint.
    Good luck for future endeavors.
