My grandfather worked for the Lane company in Rocky Mount, VA. In the 1960’s to 70’s. I still store things in my Lane cedar chest that was a Christmas present in 1979 and I use the miniature chest given to me at graduation! Thanks for all your hard work preserving this chest.
I just pulled out my Lane cedar chest I’d gotten in 1969. The outside needs cleaning and painting but interior of mine is also pristine. Will be tackling it soon as my studio is completed end of the month. Thanks for inspiring 💕
To replace it with oak would have cost over $250. Oak is very expensive. I would not have made any profit on this chest if I replaced it with oak. I was able to repair it very inexpensively. I have no doubt the repair will last for a long time.

This piece has been restored to last for many years, even tho it has partial board! It doesn't have to end in some fireplace. It's beautiful. A really amazing restoration!
GORGEOUS, as usual! I have learned to expect nothing less from you😊 Thank you for taking the time to make these videos, and the care you you put into your craft❤️
Being from the East Coast Cedar chests are plentiful there. And the smell is Awesome.. I really enjoy watching you restore this peace. It is and will be a treasure.
WOW! I love your solution on the base, that was great! To make cedar smell great again all it needs is a very light sanding and it's as fresh as new. After watching your videos I might be able to tackle my mothers old cedar chest!
Thank you! Cheers! Yes, I thought that you needed only sand it. I have not done that yet. Once I receive the lock from the company I will sand it so the smell returns. Thanks for watching! I am going to advertise this as an entry way bench for your shoes, etc.
I have never found another paper towel that works as well. I don't usually buy products based on their brand but I am sold on VIVA towels for wood working. Thanks for watching Tracey!
This video is just what I needed to see. I have a hope chest my grandmother gave me when I was 16. I am 57 yrs old now and it needs love just like that one did. It came out gorgeous! Thank you!!
Beautiful restoration. I have a Lane cedar chest I tried as a graduation gift in 1966. It's still in pretty good condition as side from one water mark. I put it on wheels because at my age moving furniture has to be easy. I'm planning on refinishing the top to fix the water stain. It's a very pretty piece and still modern. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Love your videos.
Great work, especially with the particle board bottom. That took patience and persistence to fix. 10 out of 10 on this project. Have a Lane hope chest from 1966. It looks as good as the day it was made except for a water mark on the top. I don't think there is a great demand for hope chests anymore. Great for storing blankets and linens though, (or so I am told).
I was saved! I did not know the lock was broken when I purchased it. I can't imagine how much it would have cost to replace it (IF it was even available!) This chest is from 1974- I did not know if Lane was even around anymore! I was so glad that I could get a new lock at no charge!

Beautiful. I love the look of restoration to a natural finish rather than all of the chalk paint, texture and multiple colors. Just my personal preference.
@@annelangland2082 I know exactly where that is. I live on Park Road--the road parallel to the road where the post office is. Oh, it is a small world after all.🤗 Man, you sure do great work!
I agree with one of the reviewers. I would have replaced the particle board with wood or cut the wet areas. Also the finish is too yellow. But you did a great job in your finish. Glad it was saved
You did a wonderful job restoring this cedar chest, it looks great! Lane has always made beautiful cedar chests. I have my mothers cedar chest, its at least 52 years old, possibly older. Its a very dark wood, but its dried finish and slight damage (more like wear and tear) need to be restored. I hope to get motivated to do it, by watching your videos!
@@FurnitureFlippingForProfit I mis-typed the age of the cedar chest, its 72-73 yrs old! My parents married in 1950 but I dont know if my mom had it before her marriage. For many, many years, the Lane Co. who makes my moms chest, and yours, would give to all graduating girls the all Dallas, Texas high schools a certificate for a free mini, locking cedar chest when you went into the store that sold the full size Lane chests. My mom graduated in 1947 and I graduated in 1972 and we both got the free mini chests and she later purchased a full size chest, or her parents purchased it for her, I dont know which. Now I have the full size chest and my moms mini chest. I gave my mini chest to my daughter. We didnt live in Dallas when she graduated but I dont know if they still give mini chests to graduating senior girls. Its a nice tradition though.

Hi Patti O, nice to hear from you again. Glad you like the VIVA towels! I will still narrate when I think a piece warrants it. Thanks so much for being a loyal viewer!
In the '50's and 60's Lane gave a coupon to each graduating female for a hope chest. It was a small sample of the large one like this. I have collected these small cedar chest/hope chests for years. So I have a small one like this large one in my collection.
Lane recalled millions of chests for safety reasons. They replaced my lock also. I dont recall the year they recalled. My chest was 1952. Took about two months to get it. I think the recall went up to 1987.
You are right Paula. It was 1987. They recalled the locks and provide free replacement locks. I was up a creek until I found that out. This chest was so old that I doubt I could have found a key for it. The final pics on the video show it with the old lock in place. I have to wait for the new lock to come in to list it for sale. Thanks for watching!
I would have thought you would cut an inch or two off the base as bad as it was. I know more than likely that's what I would have done. But looking at a video and in person looks a lot different. Very beautiful and you did an excellent job of restoring it as well!! Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
i love videos like this, when someone cares for a piece of furniture with a history. those who would trash it & buy something cheap at ikea should know better.
What a beautiful result!! Love the stain color. Question: I have a palm sander and I have a wet/dry vac in my workshop. What do you use to get these two items connected. I would love to have some kind of dust collection but can’t find information on this. Noticed that you have tape on yours??
I had to buy a special vacuum adapter to connect to the orbital sander. It was made by the manufacturer. However, the end of this little connector would NOT attach to my inexpensive little shop vac hose so I had to tape it with duct tape. It works- even tho it does not look all that "professional" My ryobi sander had to be taped to the hose to but it died.
Beautiful job, chest looks like new!! Did you need to do anything to the inside? The cedar wood looked great, but did the cedar still smell good or does it lose that great smell over the years?
Thankfully, I did not need to do anything to the inside. There is still some cedar smell to it. To enhance the smell, you can sand it with 220 or higher grit sandpaper. Thanks for watching!
