    I found this charming rolltop desk on the street on garbage day, so obviously I had to bring it home. I tried my best to resist the urge to modify the piece since it had plenty of character as is, but I just had to add those two little drawers inside the shelving unit; they add so much functionality to an otherwise bland bottom slot, in my opinion.
    I wanted to use a scraper to get rid of the paint as much as I could, but the drawer and most of the body didn't allow for this. The grain directions on the veneer covering most of this piece were vertical, and scraping perpendicular to the grain would certainly cause at least some damage to the thin veneer. For this reason, stripper was the way to go for removing the paint, after which sanding would do the final cleanup.
    Let me know what you thought of this one :)

      Oh I can't even watch the painted ones. Other than here, Transcend and K.S. I refuse. My stress level goes straight to level nine when I see gorgeous antiques getting chalk painted because very soon you're going to see that trend wane and so many of them will be headed for the landfill. Not to mention all the "inspired viewers" who go buy something to destroy because they do a horrific job not realizing the work involved.
      Rant over. But yeah, I hear you. Restoration channels are my happy place. 😊

      @@LaughingInTinyto be fair, I don't mind botched or ugly restorations that'll go out of style faster than my clothing style. By not making them beautiful or timeless, it leaves plenty of beautiful old pieces still available for people in the future to enjoy doing correctly. ::Gets off of soap box:: thank you for tuning into this PSA.

    I wish people would have more furniture restored that was built in the earlier years. The furniture from the past is built much to last a lot longer than the stuff you buy now.

    • @helenanilsson5666
      @helenanilsson5666 7 месяцев назад +6

      Yeah. The sad reality is that it's getting harder and harder to find products made to last. On one hand, I want to rail against the mass production ideal for driving craftsmanship to near extinction, on the other hand I'm painfully aware that mass production is the reason I and many other working class people have any comforts at all.

      I was a traditional cabinet maker for 55years here in the UK. Lack of quality pieces is just a sign of the times. People want to change their interiors at the same rate as their iphones. It got ever harder to make a living even though I had built a solid reputation. The other issue is the cost of good hardwoods. I look at prices now and know I couldn't make my craft pay anymore.

    Wow wow wow…..love it! This piece takes, in my opinion, lots of previous knowledge. This is not for an amateur! Beautiful.

    I feel like "Omar" should have been included on the final piece. 😂 Your videos are always oddly satisfying, but the specific scene of stripping the sides to not damage the veneer was EXTRA satisfying lol

    I enjoy hearing the sound of kids playing in the background and other noises like planes and lawn mowers etc. It's much better than music.

    What an elegant desk was hidden under that hideous paint. Great finished piece. I’d have to gone a little lighter with the stain, but each to his own. Beautifully done
