The veneer on this dresser was damaged beyond repair. Watch me restore it back to life!
I wasn't sure how the veneer edge bands would be as an alternative to one large veneer. They normally aren't used to cover a wide area, and I couldn't find anyone online who attempted the same thing. My main concern was that the contact cement would seep up between the strips as I pressed them down, but this wasn't a big issue. It happened in a few spots, and it was easily fixed with some careful knifing. In the end, the piece turned out to my satisfaction, especially since the stain color was very close to what I had envisioned with the Flagstone stain. However, I probably won't ever use veneer edge bands to cover a large surface area again... Buying a sheet of veneer would have been WAY easier!
Oh and I forgot to mention in the video. I didn't stain the drawers like I did with the body because I noticed that the veneer on the drawers were "reddish", so using the same Flagstone stain wouldn't have resulted in the same color as the body. Since the handles were already black, I didn't want the drawers themselves to be distracting. Thus, I decided to just topcoat right after sanding the existing stain.
Anyways, thank you for watching! If you have any questions, comment them below and I'll get back to you :)

I had an art teacher who had a wonderful quote (sorry, I do not know the author): "A man who works with his hands is a laborer. A man who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. A man who works with his hands, his head and his heart is an artist." I've never forgotten it.....and it describes your work perfectly.....you are an Artist.
Love this
Google says it was Louis Nizer
Love it! That's gone in the book.
Couldn't have put it better myself. Very true
As a factory worker who likes automotive design, this is perfect.
The transition at 1:10 was one of the best I’ve seen in these type of videos. Totally unexpected and perfectly done.
RIGHTTT
i think it was accidental but made a cool transition out of it
I came to the comments to comment this.... Its literally sooo smooth
I couldn't help but notice that too I really loved it
Literally I didn´t notice that this was a transition until I read this comment
I've been (sort of) binging your videos because by GOD they're so satisfying to watch for some reason. The no background music and silence is really soothing too.
I remember watching this for the first time and, not unlike many of the commenters, being surprised and disappointed by the grey stain on the new veneer.
This time, however, I’m able to appreciate you taking risks, by experimenting and thinking outside the box. That is precisely why i love your channel above others. Keep doing you and having fun
P.s. While i still think they grey stain is kind of… off, I also think it catches your eye and makes the piece more interesting. Thank you for your creativity and for so generous lt sharing your growing expertise with us, all the while making it fun. Your work is therapeutic. Wish you well!
Ahh the "waterfall" dresser. I am a product of the 50's and that was SOOOOOO popular back then. I wondered how you would reveneer the top, love the strips. The color of stain was unexpected but makes it fit with modern decor even though its an antique like me!! Well done as always. 👏👏💯💯😀
I thought waterfalls were from art deco of the 30s and 40s and weren't really made anymore after that 🤔 that's what I've read when I tried to research anyways
@@BranMuffin365 they were made earlier than the 50s but still very popular then.
Old furniture are like walls, They could tell you some stories

My great grandfather's bedroom suite was waterfall but his was 1905, the Sears and Robuck sticker is still on the back. Front veneer is damaged though :( I have the bed, dresser, and chifferobe.
I love, love, LOVE that you don't cover the sounds of your work with music. Thank you for that. It's very refreshing. Your editing style is also great.
Same feeling
Sammmmmme
Legendary patience. To number & then expertly adhere each of those (34!) strips of veneer to the top. Unreal.
Loved the new veneer pattern it looked so amazing until the stain then I got very disappointed, completely didn’t like the stain choice, it for me ruined that amazing pattern work. Drawers looked amazing! A clearer stain would have made it much more, but just my opinion as an armchair critic.
Agree. That stain color is very unattractive. 👎
same
I agree. I didn't love it to begin with (veneer edge on a whole side was hard to swallow for me), but that stain made it worse for me.
But that's a matter of taste, if course.
Me, too. Beautifully done work, but the color is not to my taste. But the piece of furniture isn't mine either, so who am I to complain :-D
I was confused why people were talking about the stain he chose until I saw it at the end 😭😭 he ruined that beautiful wood, it looked more like a botched paint job than a wood stain…
I am so glad I came across RUclips at the ripe old age of 68.
Many years ago I also played with old furniture.
But Andy you are making works of art and your detail in your videos is what I would have wanted to do.
Thank you for your myticulase way of working.
I also saw your red Bauhaus cabinet, beautiful.

Ripe old age of 68 😳 nope you have many years to go! 68 is the new 40 🌼🌼
Thank you both for letting us witness this absolutely wholesome interaction, i wish both of you the best in your creative endevours and daily life 🌷
I snickered a bit when they all fell seconds after you numbering them. Not a color stain I would have wanted, but I'm glad it was just what you wanted. Kinda gave me driftwood/ashy vibes. I think you did an amazing job bringing new life to this piece!
I agree, the stain shouldn't be in circulation but the work was well done none the less
I always love videos like this that don't have music, it's calming in a way.
Absolutely love the work here, super inspiring. Don’t like grey anything on wood because it’s a modern trend and sucks the life out of a piece, but I respect the way you did it.
This is what happens when someone with skills but no memory longer than 20 years or respect for a piece of old furniture wrecks it!
@@johnfisher247 I would have thrown it in the fire pile. I wouldn't call what he did wrecking it.
y’all are way too sensitive about a color
@@ticcitoasty yould you like to have a grey thing like that in your house when you know it could have been a lot more joyfull and bright?
@@crodal3842 sometimes other colours are calming for some. it is good to have happy colours, and sometimes also just calm colours 😄
That stain makes it look dirty. I loved the warm colours of the original veneer. Excellent craftsmanship nonetheless
Seriously my one gripe. I was hooked until I saw the grey and let out an audible what the fuck. I think thats a difference of perspective though! I’d prefer it be remade as close as to the original. This guy put his own spin on it and it still looks great, just not the same.
Yeah filth
The beauty of it is that you can stain yours whatever color you want. You even have this step by step tutorial to walk you through the entire process. Maybe you can even shoot and edit a video to help others just to have some haters come along and sh!t on your work.
i agree the stain soaked into the end grain of the fittings a bit too much, i wonder if a light coat of something else could stop it from soaking in so much.
@@brinkley627 not shitting on the work, shitting on the stain colour, which is subjective. Keep your shit together.
Your patience doing this veneer is so refreshing. This world is so into rushing everything. Thoroughly enjoyed watching you take such care to make this piece alive again. Even better than before.
After a long day of shift work, in addition to going to school and managing 2 other jobs, there is something so relaxing and satisfying watching your videos to unwind...a combination of ASMR, humour, artistry, precision, thoughtfully and meticulously organized tools/supplies (OCD and detail-oriented person's dream!) and great camera work! I love it!
The one single tear from that drawing😂. Love your editing. And the amount of detail in the new veneer top for this piece really stand out
That was my drawing
One has seen so many of these curved top 1940’s/50’s dressers and they always have veneer damage. Enjoyable to watch the restoration and modern twist.
I love the screw storage system you have in place. Wonderful idea.
I do, too! I want to make one for my shop.
Your work is impeccable, Andy. What blows me away though is how patient you are with the fiddly little things. Most people I've seen on YT just want to get the job done quick, so they can sell it quick. I call them furniture flippers. You're more of a furniture transformer. Thanks for sharing some of that spirit with us.
Naaa, he is a "Furniture Artist."
This was absolutely amazing. And genius. I have to admit I was loving the veneer pattern a lot more when I could see the lines better. Before the stain. But still. Wow. Just wow.
How am I supposed to find love when Transcend Furniture Gallery and Modern Makeovers exist
find love in people that also love watching it XD
Love that you gave the dresser just a kiss of modern and bold dark handles to grace it into the 22nd century.
we are in the 21st century 🫣
As an artist who recently decided to start filming my process I seriously have to give you props for all the effort you put into getting the best angles and setting up your camera for a shot that's only going to be like two seconds long in the final video. It's exhausting stuff and I certainly don't have the patience for it haha
The black handles POP...looks super
"I'm trying to peel as much as possible at once"
Expectation: "Ah because it must be more efficient or there's some other technological reason right?"
Reality: "It's much more satisfying this way"
😂😂😂😂
the veneer ad right after you told us you were gonna move on to the veneers was impeccable
That transition about a minute in with the peeled veneer was an amazing little detail! So creative!
Thank you for watching 😁
I appreciate that you honored the wood and didn't cover it up with paint, yet you brought the piece up to present day tastes.
That's beautiful. I was born in the 50s & I remember seeing those kind of dressers at my grandparents houses. Id give anything to have one of them now. Love how you modernized it with the black drawer pulls. Very nice!
This is the first time I’ve seen your work, and I seriously can’t get over it. Previously, I don’t think I’ve ever seen any furniture restoration content, but I feel that I video like this will change that. The editing, the sound design, the transitions, and even just your skill at restoration- it’s all so satisfying to watch and listen to. Thank you for this!
Thank you so much! 😁🙏🏻
It really is satisfying isn't it? I've been watching RUclips vids like through covid days and I'm only beginning to start my own projects. This particular video (for many awesome reasons) gave me the kick in the butt" i needed to get going. So inspiring. Just had to say i agree with your comment wholeheartedly
So beautiful! And I'm SUPER happy to see you use the edge banding like that- I've been toying around with doing a herringbone pattern on some drawer faces with it but wasn't sure how it would turn out, but after seeing this, I think I'll give it a go! Thanks again for sharing your creativity and skill!
I’d love to see you do it! Thank you for watching :)
Yay, I'm looking forward to seeing the effects of your experiments
Same as that on my son's dresser. Loving this idea and might have to give it a go too.
Wow! So nice to see the interaction of such both wonderful craftspeople... Love to watch you both ❤️
Started watching modern makeovers when you mentioned them on your transcend channel. You are both awesome
The edge banding technique was so cool! Happy Sunday!
Of all the refurbish furniture videos I enjoy yours the best. You have an artist eye. Your ends always stun and are beautiful.
This is one of the most satisfying channels ever. Thank you for sharing your skills and creativity!
The transition at 1:13 is awesome! I can really tell the improvement of your videos!! This is great keep it up!
I love the way you bring back the original look to the piece your working on and still making it look modern.
Awesome. The only thing that bothers me is the looks of that greyish stain on the veneer top. It looks much better on the wood. My opinion :) But all-around it is done with such precision and care... Beautiful.
I actually really loved this look! I'm a fan of grey colored wood furniture pieces especially! So pretty and well done!
We use a towel and a iron on steam when we remove veneer and it works way better than a heat gun for all our resto furniture. The moisture makes for less flaking. Just an idea 💡
I am not an ASMR person, but I just found this clip and I could listen to this type of woodwork all day! This was oddly meditative and pleasant to watch! Thank you :)
I’ve been working on a dresser like this myself, and whoever tried to restore it before me DESTROYED the veneer. I was at a loss for what to do, and I didn’t wanna paint it so I did what you did and used edge banding over it! It turned out wonderful! Your work is hugely inspiring! ❤️
I'm not a fan of the style of the finished piece, but I still love your videos and your craftsmanship is incredible!
That dark drawer accent turned out better than I thought.. God to see you back.
Once again your patience astounds me lmao, and I'm so obsessed with your nail/screw organization. This was so rewarding to see you work on. I love the different tones of the woods working so well together, and the stripes of the veneers on top. Beautiful work as always!
New subscriber here. I grew up with waterfall dressers and I’ve done some minor veneer repairs back in the day. The work you did here was masterful but I’m not a fan of the stain; it’s out of character. I favor browns myself. The stain on the handles was a perfect color and a wonderful contrast to whole piece.
I admired how you put the veneer on: a tedious task and a smashing outcome.
Really amazing job! I wasn't initially a fan of the stain after seeing it in your shop's lighting. But seeing it in the final shots completely changed my mind. It looks great!
The edge banding on top was genius!!! Such a stunning outcome.
Wow. I hated the flagstone stain until I saw the entire piece finished in different lighting. I'm genuinely shocked that it looks excellent. You have great instincts. I'll try to trust the process a little more next time :P
I mainly wonder how it looks in day-to-day life. In the glamour shot the colors make more sense, but before that they are actually clashing together.
The sound of your videos are so calming and it makes me sleepy. I love this type of videos that have no music. Great job!!
it's a month later and this is the first video of yours i've watched, so you might not see it, but you also might. i thoroughly enjoyed this video! i appreciate the way you edit sound and picture together. the stain on the top veneer did not turn out quite as nicely as i would've liked, but overall, it looks a thousand times better! great work!
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you! 😁🙏🏻
Good job. I'm not a real big fan of stains in general, I prefer the aniline wood dyes if I'm not going with natural. I also tend more towards hand rubbed finishes than painted ones. But to each his own, the dresser ended up looking very nice.
Breathtaking
I love how you save all pieces of scrap wood. I do that too and my husband laughs at me but they ARE so handy!! :) great work. And I appreciate that you are a man of few words!
Some non-termites eater, workable wood, and non-damage woods are best saver!
It's crazy how much of a difference simply sanding can already make. Thank you for these videos!
BRAVISSIMO, maestro!!!
I've only recently found you on RUclips and now have watched all your stunning makeovers. I'm in awe of your skill and foresight. I also love that your videos are the most professional and informative. It's great not to have any voice-overs too. Can't wait to see what you do next
I love videos without talking! Thank you! Well done!
OMG! What talent! How you took trash and made such a beautiful piece is truely a masterpiece. This is one for the books!!!
I love the juxtaposition of the black against the case and drawer finishes. Well done.
Old is new again! What a beautiful job. It’s not a dupe, there’s nothing like it out there. Not a restoration, it’s far better than the original. The use of that edge banding was genius! If you sell it let us know your inputs and profit.
That was the slickest editing I've ever seen in a restoration video! You never stayed on one step for too long, and transitions were crisp and interesting! Well done!
The asmr sounds in these videos are so good that I'd listen to it on Spotify if it was an album! The finished piece looks awesome and the striped veneer was sooo good and satisfying!!!!!
Okay, so the word genius comes to mind when you work on furniture!
Great work! Not a fan of choice of stain but to each their own.
Enjoyed the video content as well!
In love with the black accents... The dresser is very majestic! Beautiful job!
1:11 I have stopped the video 3 times to see that transition again? Yes, and I don't regret it, I would continue to watch it over and over again.
Nice job with the veneers, but disappointing to see the grey stain
Yeah, the stain wasn’t good with the veneer
This is amazing! Love how you opted to make it look like used raw wood and added that black accents on the furniture.
I think it's stunning... The piece even looks "proud" of it's new look/makeover. There's not much that we can do with our hands aside from bringing life back into a piece lost in time that would've otherwise hung out so long to be tossed aside. Your skills are amazing and keep up the fantastic work. I'm sure soon we will all see u on TV and living your dreams! Best regards to you and yours.
Nice Work giving these old furnitures a second live ;)
2:31 Yeeess one long strip! So satisfying! The dresser turned out beautifully
Amazing As Always. Mr. triple A
Lovely restoration! I think the grey stain would look better on a wood of lighter colour. The brown of the wood muddies it up in this case. But of course that's how we learn. Through experimenting, trying new things and learning along the way.
👍Great work, amazing patience. Thanks for posting. The old pieces that Ive redone had solid oak under the old veneers.
These old pieces deserve all the work.
I am in awe of your skill and patience!
Your style is so unique. I love it! You’re so talented. 💕
At first... I wasn't sure about the black handles.
But the final result is just perfect. Good job!

Well now that was a detailed labour of love. Well done. It turned out beautifully.

That opportunistic fade at 1:05 I love it. You saw it happening and used it very well!

Beautiful work as always! I love the raw wood stain and black-washed handle combo! 💕
Your patience and gentleness is beautiful and therapeutic! Deliberate is what I was thinking!
I liked the washed stain look on the sides but on the veneer top I think I would have preferred to see it colored more like the drawer fronts. The dark handles I was unsure about when you said black stain but seeing the finished product black handles were definitely the right call. Always great to see a ruined piece get saved.
Very unique using the edge banding to replace the veneer. I love all the variations in the wood. The black trim on the drawers is just the right accent. Great job! 🙂👍
