In this video, I perform a full restoration my great-grandmother’s antique oak cabinet that used to sit in their farmhouse storing garments, blankets, and other items for decades. The entire piece was falling apart so I had to completely disassemble it and put it all back together, plus refinish it. Additionally, it was not square or level so I had to contend with that issue as well. Ultimately, I think the finished product came out well, and my mother, the current owner of the cabinet who I'm restoring it for, is ecstatic that an heirloom piece of hers is back in usable condition!
Thank you for watching, and don’t forget to subscribe for more restoration and woodworking content coming out of my shop!

Thank you! I really enjoyed putting some new life into it
That old wood… gorgeous! And you did a fantastic job on the restoration!! Thank you for the tips to deal with warped wood. I am going to give it a try. Family heirlooms are worth all the effort.
Thank you very much! There are many ways to go about warped wood, but I certainly hope the way I did it can help give you some ideas. Best of luck!
That is a cool trick with steam and heat, with amazing results. Thanks for this tip.
Amazing result.Serious skills.
Man thank you so much!

Your daughter is adorable! So glad you included her in the video! GREAT renovation of a family piece! 👍👏✨❤😍

Beautiful piece. I still don’t get gluing those floating panels
I wondered too. But the cabinet looks great now.
Definitely shouldn't have done that
SUCH A BEAUTIFUL OAK CABINET!!! WELL DONE!!!
💖💖💖💖💖
I hope you do more of these relaxing furniture restorations. I love finding new restoration RUclips channels made by actual woodworkers who know what they're doing, and are bringing back antiques
Aw thank you! I am hoping to do more in the future as life and time allow.
Great work, Josh. Took more patience than I'll ever have. I bet your mom loved it!
Thanks, Joe! She likes it a lot, and will get to see it in person in about a week when she comes here 🤞
You are a loving and thoughtful son.
I've been waiting & watching & hunting for somebody who can do this kind of work so I can watch & learn how to fix 2 old boxed-in table cabinets my grandparents owned in the 1940s. My papaw made both & they mean everything to me. Thank you.
Awesome! I love this!
What a truly lovely gift for your mother, restoring this cabinet! Incredible result and another hundred years of use.
She is ecstatic about it! Thank you! And yes, another 100 years is the hope 🤞
Your family is very lucky to have you-they sure are hard on furniture! That old wood is beautiful. You did an excellent job! 🌟
Awe thank you! That means a lot!
Nice ! Job
Interesting to watch, it touched my heart that your daughter got to be part of the process and thank you, no annoying background music! One thing I would have changed is eliminating the bow tie fastener on the front but like you say...simple and effective.
Thank you! Yea I always enjoy having my kids in the shop…fun watching them learn. The bow tie fastener isn’t my first choice for sure, but I also didn’t want to change it since it was the only piece of hardware my mom remembered on it (she has memories of spinning it with my great-grandfather).
I have never seen twisted boards repaired like that.
Old woodworker’s tricks…but just trying to salvage what I could!
I love it!!! 💖 I wish I could make my whole house pink! But my husband and 3 sons don’t like pink as much as we do. 😞
😍 very nicely done and with so much respect. I really enjoyed this video you are a very fortunate man to have the skills and the will to fix this piece of furniture for your family
Thank you! 🙏
I bet mom was thrilled. So sweet!
She loves it very much! Thank you
Nice work. I’m sure your mom was thrilled.
Well done, excellent job, I think your Great Grandpa would be proud of you. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you sir! I certainly hope so
Love the help of your daughter!
The woodgrain in the cabinet door really makes the whole thing stand out. Great restoration, thanks for the video.
Thank you!
Lots of work and labor of love. Excellent job!
A beautiful job and gorgeous finished cabinet. I'm sure the owners will show it with pride and love!
Thank you! It’s going back to my mother’s house…I will continue to get to see it for many years!
Beautiful,a true labor of love.❤
Wow! Well done. Perfect for another 100+ years. 😍
Thank you! Yes that is definitely the hope!
Gorgeous!
Beautiful restoration.
Beautiful restoration. Thank you for not adding music!
Ahh thank you!
loved the way you repaired and restored even the original ply and twisted boards.....fabulous old oak cabinet....oak is my favourite.
Yes it was my goal to use every bit of the existing material, and luckily I was able to save it all. Oak is definitely a beautiful wood and great to work with too!
It turned out beautifully ! I think it is more about conservation than restoration.
Thank you!
What beautiful furniture..keep up the great work.👍
It took patience and expertise to restore this heirloom piece. Thanks for the video. I learned from it. Good for your daughter to be involved.
Awesome! Glad to hear. And yes, I love having my kids in the shop!

Yep I always like something with a little history!
Absolutely gorgeous, well done!

Deano here from Biloxi, MS. Obviously you are a restorer. I see this is your Great-grandfather's cabinet BUT you are just now restoring it?? Boy, you sure got a long backlog?? LOL!! If you are not a master restorer, I have no idea what one look like!!
Thank you!
Amazing restoration!
Thank you!
Wow! Great job on the cabinet and I love how you did the video!!
Aw thank you! I appreciate the wonderful comments 😊
How fortunate you are to be able to restore a beautiful oak cupboard that belonged to your great grandparents. Raw sawn oak? Great job. Thanks
Thank you! Yes it was rough sawn oak. One of my favorite woods!
Gorgeous job..
Thank you very much 🙏
Just found your channel, 👍🏼 and sub. Really enjoy watching your work.👍🏼💙
Thank you!!
I'd really liked, to see the reaction of your mom then ....! Could imagine she had water in her eyes. NIce piece and a good job - congrats!
Greetings from Germany from the silver fox, David 😉🦊
She actually has not seen it in person yet! But will in about two weeks. I hope to get video of it and may post it as a short if it goes well…we’ll see 😊 thank you!

New subbie here
Did you say it was for your mom? She will adore it. That was so much fun to watch.
Yes it is for my mom! Glad you enjoyed it!
(3:52) That's awesome of you dad.
👏👏👏👏
Ooh, so enviable.
We have loud snapping sounds that come from our furniture and doors in the winter here in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. The dryness in those months causes any inner panels that were glue, painted or varnished into place to split. We’ve got lots of splits around the house.
I’ve got a five drawer dresser in very much the same condition that I have to work on just like this. On it, I will definitely only glue the frame supports and let the panels float.
So, when I see you and others glue the panels into the frames, I cringe, but I suppose in Oklahoma you don’t have such a contrast in dryness/humidity.
Yes it is pretty much always humid here…some fluctuation but not much. Best of luck in your dresser restoration!
Just found your channel by chance. What a great job you did on this piece - looks fabulous ! I'll subscribe now and see what else you have done 🙂
Thank you! 🙏
you have done a great job. Bravo. I didn't get a good look at the cabinet before the repair. all your shots were closeups. also at the end, no before and after.
Thank you. Yes unfortunately I lost a lot of footage from before I started and didn’t realize it until well into the process.
The video and all the effort made to make a piece of furniture functional is very good. I appreciate you sharing that impetus.
But I would like to say that we should not confuse the words "RESTORATION" with what's a repair where an object is obtained with some parts of the original.
Restoration is a discipline that seeks to preserve old objects and where the materials with which an object was manufactured are studied and when it comes to restoring, the same materials with which it was created are used, pictorial layers, paints, glues, etc. types of wood.
In many cases it is about preserving the most authentic possible original materials, paint, wood.
Another premise to follow, as far as possible, is that any restoration carried out must be able to be removed in a moment and return the object to its previous state.
I always say that "Restoring is not repainting"
Thank you 😊
I do appreciate the distinctions drawn…with this piece I’d make the case that, minus the missing shelves, my goal was to use all original materials and introduce very little, if anything new to the piece. For the most part I was successful in that endeavor, but I am not a scholar of restoration by any means…merely trying to give old pieces their glory back!
Beautiful restoration, just wondering why you didn't clean and sand it when it was all apart.
Thanks…I really should have done it like that…I was afraid I would mess up the dimensions of the parts by doing that and it wouldn’t go back to together right. Turned out all the dimensions were a little off and really should have done it prior. Was a learning experience for me.
Be sure and tell your mom you had help restoring it. The cabinet will mean that much more to her.
Great restore bro!
Thanks dude!
Good job, I am so glad that you didn't use a ton of bondo and paint most of it, the beauty is in the old wood being brought back to life. Just one question, why didn't you strip and sand it when you had it all apart and then you would have only had to do final sanding once you put it all back together?
That’s a great question. If I had to do it over again, that is the route I would have taken. Live and learn…
Excellent job. Why did you glue the panels to the stiles, rather than free float them?
Thank you. I glued one long side to provide rigidity since it is part of the door. I’ve had other free floating doors that would fall apart after a year or two with consistent use (this one will be used regularly).
Include all those panels and that are supposed to float. All this thing the whole ripped to shreds is the humidity changes
In my experience it shouldn’t be too bad. Any furniture piece that’s glued together is susceptible to humidity changes. I will always opt to glue anything that’s structural as well.
Hi. I’m working on an old tiger oak dry sink table and have a question. Did you first stain with the the dark walnut and then the golden oak on top?
Solo una Pregunta: Ya que desarmaste el mueble completamente;no es mas facil lijarlo asi en piezas?? No entiendo, si veo que es mas complicado lijar el mueble armado. Pero fuera de eso te quedo muy bonito.
Thank you! As for the finishing, I originally wasn’t planning to redo it and strip it down, but the Restore-A-Finish I tried at first looked horrible, so after it was assembled I decided to strip it. Would have been better to do it first, but projects don’t always go as planned!
Lovely job. Just wondering why you didn't replace the legs you cut off or at least put something to raise it off the floor a bit to protect the wood.
Thank you 🙏 to answer your question, I chose not to as there is still quite a bit of curvature on the bottom pieces (current legs) and I liked the shape of them. I may end up adding some furniture pads or something similar to the touch points, but it was an aesthetic choice. Valid question though!
😃😃💪💪👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏🙋🙋
Why did you glue the floating panel?
I just made the decision that I wanted more structural strength for the piece. I’ve had cabinets come apart at the joints with floating panels much quicker than humidity or seasonal changes do when gluing the panels.
Yes, once you do it, but I'll last a lifetime
We’re those side panels designed to be floating?
Probably. I’ve never been a fan of floating panels though as I’ve had to repair way too many failed joints, and…the sides are major structural components of this piece, so would rather risk wood movement than structure failure. Others might see it differently.
Beautiful job.
I'm curious as to why you wait till it is assembled before cleaning, sanding and filling. Some at least would be easier when disassembled, or would it? Like the many panels of the back. Not a criticism, just an honest question from a total amateur.
Thank you! So my thought process going into it was that I didn’t want any dimensions to get altered by sanding before I put it back together. In hindsight, I would have done the surface prep before assembly since I ended up having to make some adjustments anyways (the small router cut for example). It was a learning moment for me.
How old would you guess the piece to be?
I have a similar one,but shorter made from English oak that was my grandfather's in England.
Based on the serial number in the New Royal archives, it was manufactured sometime between 1895 and 1901 (the series production timeline).
Why don't my projects turn out like that?
Tell me the name of paintings please I have proyect. 🙏
Does every guy in America have 💰ten thousand dollars worth of wood working machinery in their garage ?
Lovely to see it being restored ❤
