- This solid oak chest has seen better days. It apparently had been painted purple some time ago and now was showing signs of wear. This grand old lady was in need of a total refresh!
I stripped the paint to find beautiful oak wood grain!
The video shows my work and contains no narrative since I believe everything I did is apparent.

So I am not the only one who cringes when they paint over beautiful wood.
They used to think they were modernizing these old pieces. My curved front dresser had layers of paint when I found it. Took me days to strip it down. Now it has it’s natural wood with gold foil accents on carvings on the legs the way it was originally. $70 from a junk store!

i love the fact that you stained the inside of the drawers, it’s a small detail but nothing is worse than a seemingly beautiful dresser and the inside is just the raw unstained wood. i also really liked the no music, i found the background noise very relaxing.

Canada here. I love the wood grain, thank you for taking the time to do the job right. I have seen a number of videos ‘refinishing’ furniture only to see paint slapped on hiding the true beauty.
I always wondered what possesses people to paint over these beautiful old pieces of furniture. It’s nothing short of an act of vandalism! Beautiful restoration ☺️

I know trends come and go, but how could anyone PAINT such a beautiful piece of furniture? If not the piece of furniture itself, the beautiful wood. Great Job brining this one back from the Abyss!
Now those mindless idiots are taking their paint brushes to wooden kitchen cabinets and feeling so proud of them selves.
Seems lazy on this one-much easier to cover it up than to strip and sand (do work). I watched a guy cover a beautiful piece with chalk paint and decoupage it with flower print napkins. Fortunately he did not clean it, strip it, or sand it, so hopefully whoever finds it and cleans that mess off later will have an easier time of it.
Now if he did that to some modern piece of particle board crap, I would have been 100 % on board. But it was at least 80 years old, real wood with a nice grain.😭 Abomination.
Beautiful, simply beautiful! That wood is so gorgeous. I can't imagine why anyone would have painted it. You have done a great job of restoring this piece. The next owner should be proud.

Thanks for your comments. I will continue to do videos without words or music provided the particular flip does not require detailed explanations. Many of my projects are quite detailed so I will need to add narration so you can learn from me. On occasion, I get one like this where I can just edit with no narration.
The level of detail you put into each piece is amazing. Your Love for what you're doing is evident in the care and touching your hands do of every part and again, the detail. Your hands are very beautiful and strong in the way they go over carefully the grain, the feel after sanding, and the Love in each piece of furniture you are restoring. Many Blessings

I really, really still like a lovely wood finish. I feel it is a statement of true skill of the person refinishing a piece to it's true wood finish. OH, and I certainly prefer no music, also! Sometimes I even turn off sound completely if there is music. Thank you for your quality videos!

Stunning. In the 70's and 80's we collected older furniture and often bought painted pieces as they were cheaper and we learned how to restore them to there natural beauty. We can't believe people painted over the beauty of beautiful wood. We stripped all the painted 8" high baseboards in our 1904 home. It was worth all the work. Sadly we had to move and the new owners painted all the baseboards and walnut doors white. We almost cried when we saw the pictures in the for sale realtor site😢. When it went up for sale again. Keep up the work you are doing.
I think the dirty lavender paint-job is a throwback to the c.a. 2001-2010 "shabby chic" era; although there used to be rubs in the paintwork right through to the underlying wood to make it look old and worn, that don't appear here. Personally I never thought there was anything "chic" about it: it always just looked plain shabby to me. But Cynthia, what you have done to this little cabinet is just marvellous. The oak graining and even the knots are superb. And didn't the hardware come up well! Anyone who purchases this will have a family heirloom for the future. That's just the quality of the item you've now created.
Thank you for taking the time to clean this first. Maybe personal choice but I think it helps see any problems and lets you work in a better state. Keep up the great work.

What I love it's it's restoring the dignity to the piece and honoring the hard work and skill the original builder put into it. I love painted furniture, but it's a shame when people paint antique that are in decent condition. There's plenty of industrialized furniture from the 70s onwards to paint.

This went from a piece that would go in a garage to stack with junk to an heirloom that I would be proud to have in my home. What IDIOT painted purple paint over all of that gorgeous wood. Thanks Lady Ditz. Don't panic... the narration will be the norm in my videos. This is an exception since it was such a straight forward refinish job that I did not think it would be enhanced with narration.
I agree completely. Seems like everyone is doing ASMR. It works well for some, like the ones who have always done it, but when you get used to hearing your favorites talk it just seems kinda weird. But that table turned out gorgeous.

That is a very beautiful dresser and just wonderfully restored... Thanks for sharing your project... I love doing furniture restoration also but have only done it for myself over the years. I did have to let go of a lot of the pieces I did when I lived in Spain and moved back to Canada... Restoring the ornate Antiques is the most fun.
