Restoring a Walnut Mid Century Cedar Chest - oxalic acid & blushing

- It was all going so well and then I NEARLY messed up the whole thing! Dealing with blushing is something anyone who restores furniture will have to face at some point. It usually CAN be saved, but it's obviously better to prevent it in the first place. The exterior of this mid century cedar chest was in pretty rough shape. Flaking, failing finish, black water stains, scratches. This was quite the project!

The wood grain in that chest is so beautiful, would’ve been a shame to just paint over it. Love that you restored it to better than its former glory.

Nothing wrong with paint, but I agree that people who just slap pastel chalk paint on everything and call it a day deserve to get beaten with the vintage farming implements they have hanging all over their walls.

I consider this piece 'better than new'. It retains it's story and character plus it is ready for another 70+ years - all as a result of your artistry and respect for the origin of the piece.
Watched and as I scrolled down to read comments I said to myself, "Another better than new piece" and there it was first comment.

It really is amazingly beautiful at the end there. Even though I liked it during the process as well, I was still completely surprised. That wood! And by the end the design elements come out so well! Lovely!

I live in a very humid place. It does this to me all the time. I thought it was just a problem with the polycrlic.

I have one by Lane. A '50's cedar chest. Back in the day they were known as a young lady's Hope Chest. She would store away linens and items she had embroidered, knitted, or crocheted, or heirloom items received as gifts from family for use in her new home after she married. This is a labor of love to restore such treasures as these.
Another fabulous job Angie. it looked a proper mess in the start but you really turned it around. So glad the parcel landed with you. And delighted that you're so excited by such a small item. Lots of love from Ireland.

I have a piece similar to that cedar chest (but it much better shape!) that was gifted to me by my great-aunt. I've had it for +/- 40 years. It is starting to cry out for a touch of rejuvenation. Wow! I’m speechless! I believe this is the first one done really professionally and with love. Instead of sanding the furniture and then painting it with green, blue, yellow, purple or another color other than the original, I finally see a person restoring the furniture to its original grandeur. That gold and color of wood are magical together. I am not a fan of gold most of the time but that is just a wonderful combination. Great job again!
You do amazing work! Years ago my Dad refinished my Grandmothers antique push treadle sewing machine (from around 1916). He put a varnish or shiny finish to it. It doesn't look right. One of these days I will have it refinished. It still has the leather belt for it too. One of the drawers had to be replaced, that looks fine.

The refinished chest looks so much better than anything you can buy at a store these days. We live in an absurd world, in which consuming more and more natural resources and buying new stuff is cheaper, "good for the economy", "drives growth" etc. All these new cheap goods we buy end up in the rubbish, and it's often shipped to third world countries. We need an economy that's based on repairing and renewing old and broken things. This youtube channel gives me hope. We *can* exist sustainably, the proof is right here.

We had one of these when I was a pre-teen. I thought it was a bit of a hopeless case, but your craft has made it a magnificent work of Art, better than the original piece. awe-struck!

I've loved many of your projects but for some reason I think this may be my favorite. It's gorgeous.
i'm an avid woodworker, and one of the few that enjoy the finishing phase of the build. i gotta say, i've learned soooo much from your videos on various finishing techniques. i tend to avoid stains altogether, but that GF nutmeg you always use is beautiful, and will definitely try it in the future. and i've attempted to paint projects before with standard latex paint, but it ends up with a sticky finish. i think i'll try some of the mineral paint you always use.
i bought an old solid maple desk for $3 from the local university annual "yard sale" and plan to reuse the desktop. i'm not sure about how to remove the existing topcoat, but the scraper looks like a safe choice.
you might consider trying a card scraper aka cabinet scraper to augment your paint scraper. card scrapers work really well in inside corners, and sharpening them isn't very difficult.
keep up the great work. i love your style of commentary and how you explain every step of the process.

I find myself saying things out loud as I watch, I know I’m not the only one 😂. As the piece was blushing “oh no”. And the final product “geez la weez girl”, “WOW!” It looks great. Well done.
It's GORGEOUS!!!! ..I'm so glad you restored instead of painted.. all flippers paint furniture.. but there is on occasion that a piece of wood that is just to beautiful to paint.. thank goodness it ended up in a restorers hands.. and thanks for sanding that cedar... so many times I see it ignored, and a cedar chest just isn't the same without that wonderful smell.. I use Colton's cedar oil off Amazon to restore it after sanding... I'm restoring a antique cedar lined armoire now, that found itself painted inside and out by a flipper and not very well painted either..

I love the entire piece but especially love the grain on the front of the chest! I can certainly relate to this old chest since I was 6 when it was made and now sometimes feel the way it looked before you gave it a "makeover"! 💖👍😀

Absolutely beautiful!!! I was horrified the other day that a contractor was putting a heavy gloss polyurethane on cedar, several coats of it. Turned it to plastic basically. It was for an interior ceiling. I almost cried. So glad you are treating this right!

Your problems are very helpful. Watching perfect videos is great but we all make mistakes. Seeing how to deal with them is one reason we watch.
Glad you added the part about sanding the interior. It actually liberates the natural oils in the wood, which concentrates the scent, which repels pests 👍. It's absolutely beautiful!

I have seen so many pieces of beautiful furniture less damaged than this that others have slapped chalk paint on saying it wasn't savable. Oh yes it is. They just don't have the skills or want to take the time. Thank you for restoring this.
I think it is beautiful and well worth the effort. I have one that my mom got for her wedding in 1961. We always called it a hope chest. Women always got them back in the day for keeping linens in. We just cleared out my parents house, and these days people seem to have no use for these pieces. They just throw them out. It’s a shame. I’m glad to see some young people appreciate fine furniture. Bravo. Some day people will be interested again, because the quality of most of what is made today simply won’t last like the old pieces.

This piece was made in the year I was born, so it holds a special place in my heart. Also, it has cedar, which is one of my favorites. Love the cedar aroma the old cedar chests give off. Thanks for sharing this video!
