RESTORING a mid century walnut dresser- patching veneer & oxalic acid

  • I get asked A LOT about why/when I would choose to scrape, strip, or just sand a finish off. I actually do all three of these on different parts of this piece, so thought I would explain why I'm choosing one over another depending on what the finish is like.
This beautiful, but pretty banged up mid century dresser had a TON of finish problems on the top; dark water rings, white water marks, flaking finish, missing finish, and a decent sized piece of missing veneer.
I used oxalic acid to remove the dark stains, and made a patch for the missing veneer. My patch isn't perfect, but it's a million times better than it was!!

I just love that you do a wonderful mix of complete restoration to its former glory and painting projects that would have otherwise been trashed. You are one of a handful of people on here that know when to fully restore a piece of furniture and when to make it a newer version of its former self. I really appreciate your care of these pieces!! As always continue the amazing work and I will always look forward to watching your videos!!

WoW Angie, if I hadn't kept track of where the repair was, I almost wouldn't believe it was ever damaged! This was, by far, my favorite part of the restoration. I have a number of mid century pieces that are chip board and a plastic veneer. I can't bring myself to throw them out because they belonged to my parents and were in the house since before I was born. The buffet is okay but the display cabinets have gone all wobbly and rickety after being moved too many times, water has gotten into the bottom of some and blown the chip board. I've been watching ALL of your videos to lean every single way I can potentially save them and breathe some more life into them.

I loved watching you fix the patch on this piece. I find it hilarious that every video I watch you mention how long the video is. I can’t stand the 15 sec clips on IG. I know these videos are from 2 years ago but I like to start from the “beginning” of the individual’s journey. Your videos aren’t too long and I definitely have snacks when I’m watching. Great work and thanks for sharing.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to review the entire top. I will attempt to patch it now. The finish is very dried and flaking off in many places and your scraper is a godsend! I am so impressed!!! That patch you did was near perfect as near as you could get without replacing the entire top, that being said I'm so torn. Every week I can't wait to see the finished product but I absolutely hate that I'm at the end of the video.😥😥😥 Also two thumbs up 👍👍 for the longer video I wholeheartedly❤️❤️ enjoyed it. You will never hear a complaint from me if all your videos started being a little bit longer. Keep up the excellent work as always you impress!!

You are a true craftswoman! What a gorgeous restoration! The stain color is beautiful and the repair is invisible. Before I even knew there was such a thing as wood bleach I used 10% bleach (liquid chlorine I use in my pool) on an old dresser I’d stripped because it was super splotchy and I wanted to seal over the bare wood. I had no idea if it would work, but it was all I could think of to try. The 10% bleach worked beautifully for me. Later I found out that bleaching wood was a thing. Lol

Thank you for the information on the difference of the damage between white water rings and dark rings. I have several pieces of furniture with just the surface finish damage, so now I feel like I might be able to refinish them myself. Thanks again Angie!
    Gorgeously refinished!
