RESTORING a mid century walnut dresser- patching veneer & oxalic acid
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 дек 2021
- I get asked A LOT about why/when I would choose to scrape, strip, or just sand a finish off. I actually do all three of these on different parts of this piece, so thought I would explain why I'm choosing one over another depending on what the finish is like.
This beautiful, but pretty banged up mid century dresser had a TON of finish problems on the top; dark water rings, white water marks, flaking finish, missing finish, and a decent sized piece of missing veneer.
I used oxalic acid to remove the dark stains, and made a patch for the missing veneer. My patch isn't perfect, but it's a million times better than it was!!

I just love that you do a wonderful mix of complete restoration to its former glory and painting projects that would have otherwise been trashed. You are one of a handful of people on here that know when to fully restore a piece of furniture and when to make it a newer version of its former self. I really appreciate your care of these pieces!! As always continue the amazing work and I will always look forward to watching your videos!!
Who watchs your videos, woodworkers, first time furniture repairers or just bored people like me? I love your videos and I would love to do it, but too old. Great job!!!
Wow! What an amazing piece to restore 🤩
The time and dedication you applied to this one was so worthy for the beautiful finish of the end product. This armchair viewer loves to watch and marvel at your patience and expertise to restoring and giving new life to otherwise rejected pieces of furniture 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
WoW Angie, if I hadn't kept track of where the repair was, I almost wouldn't believe it was ever damaged! This was, by far, my favorite part of the restoration. Your feel for the color variations of grain is astounding. You are a gifted young lady for sure. Most worth of the Master designation. Bravo!🌷🌷
Once again, you're really on of my favorite DIY gurus here on RUclips! What a gorgeous dresser you made!
Wow, you do such a great job of bringing back to life pieces of a older age. Wish I could commission you to do your magic on me....I'd love to be 40 again!
Your channel is one that my wife and I can agree on. She enjoys the finishing and I like the recycling aspect of your work. Great job as usual.👍
I like seeing the full.effort. As a serial owner builder doing good things to homes I like seeing the whole.
Thanks for watching!
I have a number of mid century pieces that are chip board and a plastic veneer. I can't bring myself to throw them out because they belonged to my parents and were in the house since before I was born. The buffet is okay but the display cabinets have gone all wobbly and rickety after being moved too many times, water has gotten into the bottom of some and blown the chip board. I've been watching ALL of your videos to lean every single way I can potentially save them and breathe some more life into them.
Love this because we keep it away from landfills.
redoing then would be a lovely way to freshen them up while still keeping them in the family. We did this with my great grandma's bedframe and it suits my moms house so much better than it used to
I loved watching you fix the patch on this piece. I find it hilarious that every video I watch you mention how long the video is. I can’t stand the 15 sec clips on IG. I know these videos are from 2 years ago but I like to start from the “beginning” of the individual’s journey. Your videos aren’t too long and I definitely have snacks when I’m watching. Great work and thanks for sharing.
You're so welcome! I'm so glad they're not too long! 😊
Finally, a video on restoring the piece to its natural wooden beauty. Getting tired of everyone using chalk paint to cover some beautiful wood furniture and leaving only the top and legs unpainted. Thanks
I watch hours of furniture flippers, and they are great, but when it comes to flipping you are in a different league. So smart and so creative. I love how you stage, and the MUSIC is perfect!! You go girl.
I don't pretend to know why, but you're the best at helping me start to work on the mounds of furniture in my house that I need to refinish, both MCM and family antiques. I'm grateful.
So I move furniture in the states cross country, and my shipper gave me an old upright piano. The finish is worn down, faded, rings all over, kids stickers all over wood and keys, keys are yellowed, etc. this here is the finish I want emulate. Cant wait to get back home and get started
her work area is neat, organized, and spotless!!!! It's inspiring
Totally impressive. I would never have believed it was the same piece if I hadn't watched the video.
A sad looking piece that is now beautifully restored!
Thank you for bringing it back to life! 💖
I love rewatching videos of some of my most favorite and most talented artists and it's like watching it for the very first time, especially artisting like Angie!!
Thank you so much!! 😃
I love that you didn't paint - you restored it all. Some pieces really deserve staying as they were made. You're very good!
Awe, thank you so much!
My word, Angie, your skills amaze me. The care you take on every piece you refinish is phenomenal! What a beautiful dresser! 👏
I ALWAYS watch every second of your videos. They are never boring and always informative. You do careful and beautiful work
I appreciate your showing us each step you had to go through to finish this piece. It reminded me how time consuming rehabbing furniture can be
Nailed it 🔨... Again.
Nice work Angie. The piece is beautiful.
Angie, this renovation is why i truely love your channel. Your skills are of expert quality. You are amazing 👏👏👏
I love Angie she explains everything she is doing I think she is my favorite you tuber
Always enjoy your refinishing video’s with it’s blend of 🎼 music, informative tips and your restoration skills. The worst most dreadful furniture pick ups I find the most rewarding to watch. You are truly blessed with your talent and video editing skills…. keep it up😊👍🇨🇦
Thank you so much for watching!
You have made me fall in love with MCM and unpainted furniture again. Thank you for your expertise.
You are so welcome!
Oh, darling! This piece's finish simply glows. Wonderful job.
This was an amazing transformation. Your attention to detail gave this piece a new, beautiful life.
Another amazing piece! This one was interesting because of that incredible repair and because it showcases the fact that some pieces don’t need any paint at all. Sometimes a more modern finish is just the thing to revive an older piece.
Fantastic work! I love the restoration rather than painting over anything and everything!
Another top shelf refinish, Angie! You can almost hear that piece shouting, "Hallelujah! I've been redeemed!" You are gifted, indeed.
That is my dream dresser! Absolutely stunning. Thanks again for rescuing it. Thumbs up for long videos, too
All the pieces she restores look 1000 times better than the furniture sold in modern stores. These are definitely items worth saving.
Thank you very much!
I have a MCM dresser that belonged to my late Mother-in-law. Since my husband passed, I've been wanting to have it refinished and one drawer repaired. It's going to our son, and really wish you were closer to Texas! I would trust you with it, without hesitation. ❣️
.....and the patchwork on this was stellar!! You rock!!
Thank you again Kristi!! 😊
Love that you showed the patched area at the end👍 great job
Yes! I was hoping she would show it.
Your patch work is LEGIT, girlfriend! In my next life; I’m gonna be Angie 2.0! Get after it!!
😆 Goals! Thanks again for watching and the laugh Carrie!
I love that you save the wood when you can.
You always get a piece looking like new, or even better than when it was new. Details like using 7 or 8 coats of poly gives it a quality it wouldn't have had when it came off the production line. Excellent as usual.
Loved watching that patch become a permanent part of the piece...wow, Angie 💐 so hooked👏
It really turned out lovely. Now a piece that can be handed down. You have impeccable taste!
Love that you love a piece you have to work on to bring it back to its original beauty.
This is the second time I watch this video...hands down my favorite piece ❤️
I love your longer videos. I learn so much. Thank you. Your creations are exquisite!
Watching this repair and restoration was therapeutic! I’ve never watched someone replace damaged veneer. For someone in the business for only a few years you do great work. It’s inspiring!
This dresser is absolutely stunning Angie. A lot of hard work, but it sure paid off big time.
This is the lesson I was waiting for!!! I have what I think is about a 1930s bedroom suite that was damaged while it was in storage. The veneer has come loose in spots and or has broken off. I was hoping I wouldn't have to review the entire top. I will attempt to patch it now. The finish is very dried and flaking off in many places and your scraper is a godsend! I love watching how you transform ugly damaged pieces and turn them into beauties again!
I'm so glad I could help June! Thanks for watching and best of luck with your bedroom suite!
This would make Thomas Johnson proud! Amazing work!
Omg this transformation is beautiful. That repair is so well hidden I'm amazed.
What a finely done finish, rich and satin/ velvet. Thank you for showing the details with care.
Your finishes are much better than the original! Lovely!
As always another beautiful piece. I love the long videos. And I love that you show your steps and explain what, why and how your doing it. A lot of other RUclipsrs will just fast forward so quickly and I'm like, " but how did you do that?" Lol. Great job Angie! You are truly talented.
Oh Angie! This turned out so amazing! You work is admirable, not only because you save furniture from the trash, but because you make the world a more beautiful place.
Your truly an amazing and talented furniture artist! I’m always amazed. Gorgeous piece❤️
Fabulous job! The patched veneer looks nearly invisible with your creative blending skills.
Fantastic!!! I think is one of your best instructional videos to date!! I learned so much that I have often wanted to learn how to do and then avoided pieces that would have required that skill. Now I'm ready to give it a go!!! Thank you! You always amaze me and I am so grateful for your kindness in sharing and teaching!!!!
Find myself dancing to the reveal music😊! Beautifully done!
This one turned out quite beautiful. Watching you make that chipped and beat up corner totally transform was wonderful. I can’t wait to try my hand and some project pieces I have. Gaining so much knowledge from you. Thanks!!!
Great repair of veneer installation and use of tints and EXCEPTIONAL completion.
Thank you kindly!
What else is there it say, but AMAZING!
Your work is unbelievable. I'm so excited when I see another video is up.
Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge and beauty of your finished pieces.
I JUST found my first MCM Dixie dresser for 80 dollars! And I AM COMMITTED to fixing it: started watching your channel and have learned so much! So excited to begin!
I'm so glad I could help! Best of luck with it!! 😀
Wow, what a beautiful dresser. I so enjoy your videos... the longer the better.
Wow I so enjoy watching you doing your magic. Every piece looks fantastic and and you are so thorough. That's something I really like. It's quality.
Personally, I love the longer video!
the patched area is virtually indistinguishable from the rest. excellent work!
Another gorgeous piece you did. Man I wish I had talent like that.
This was absolutely fascinating. I've got some pieces that I never attempted to refinish because of the veneer. It's great to see the possibilities.
The nutmeg finish is my favorite because of that warmth in the color.
I have to say, I am really enjoying watching your work...
The patched corner... awesome... 😎
I so respect your abilities as a repair-person! That veneer patch was nothing short of genius! I do hope you are pricing you pieces with taking into consideration the amount of work you put in and your artistic eye for color. That's not something everyone has.
Thanks for watching!
Guuurrrrll! That is magnificent. What a transformation! You are indeed very gifted!!
Angie-I’m learning so much!! This veneer patch technique you’ve developed is genius and pure artistry as well. ❤
I'm so glad!
Absolutely beautiful patchwork on the top corner!
Stunning. The poly really brings out the grain. Love it!!
It turned out beautifully! The Nutmeg stain is my favorite. You give us so much good information in each video. ⭐️
Thank you very much!
I wish I could find those mid century pieces! A grocery store paper bag also works very good for those small nubs! Again, another beautiful piece, especially that patch!
This piece is beyond gorgeous. Great Job.
You did such a fabulous job on the patch. It is an absolutely stunning piece. I so enjoy watching you restore these pieces of furniture that were beautiful at one time but have been neglected or abused. You give them new life and beauty. I can't help but think that the piece of furniture is grateful.
A beautiful restoration. The patch is perfect. I love your videos and your honesty about the techniques used. Greetings from Spain 🇪🇸
Another awesome restoration. I love your attention to detail. You stand out.
This is just absolutely beautiful a lot of work but well worth it I am so glad that you took the time to show us each and every step so that we could learn you've helped me out a lot thank you so much for sharing love this piece have a great day my dear friend and God bless you
Beautiful Angie, as always 😊 Great patch job, it’s not even visible, brilliant 🤎
I always feel so satisfied at the end reveal. Your care and patience is remarkable and turns out an incredible product. Another winner!!!!
Beautifully rich!! Well done! Your a pro in every way! Your attention to detail is phenomenal!
Wow, I honestly think this looks better than it would have new. The finish is perfect on this piece. It no longer has that overly glossy finish. It now shows the wood beautifully.
Angie, I learn from every video. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience!
Great job! You nailed it! 😄 Thank you for showing the patch work with the chipped veneer that was very helpful.
That patch is incredible. What a great piece of work!!!
Another great restoration! I love the Nutmeg stain. Nice work on the veneer patch.
Gorgeous! Worth $1000 now!
Absolutely gorgeous mid century piece!!!, I would love to challenge you to try a Art Deco piece... just to see where your imagination and creativity would go with art deco.. we are coming to the 100 yr anniversary of Art Deco, when I did my theatre room and bedrooms in art deco it was hard to find, but with the 100 yr, coming up in 2025 It's popping up everywhere lately.
Oh, and thank you for all the instructions. You are so talented and are willing to share everything you've learned so that we might refinish correctly. Thank you.
Wow! WOW!!! Absolutely beautiful piece. Love your attention to detail. Thanks for sharing.
Can't tell from the camera where the patch even is! That's a well done patch job in my book! Very nice!
Superb result as a reward for gentle attention!
Just came across your channel and as a fellow refinisher your projects are very well done. I appreciate the time you spend to do it right. I get a lot of Frankensteins where someone has slapped it with paint or made bad repairs just to flip it. Thank you for showing folks how to do it right.
My Lord. This is outstanding!
You are definitely gifted. Just beautiful! I love watching these videos!
I am so impressed!!! That patch you did was near perfect as near as you could get without replacing the entire top, that being said I'm so torn. Every week I can't wait to see the finished product but I absolutely hate that I'm at the end of the video.😥😥😥 Also two thumbs up 👍👍 for the longer video I wholeheartedly❤️❤️ enjoyed it. You will never hear a complaint from me if all your videos started being a little bit longer. Keep up the excellent work as always you impress!!
I agree - longer is great!
You are a true craftswoman! What a gorgeous restoration! The stain color is beautiful and the repair is invisible. Before I even knew there was such a thing as wood bleach I used 10% bleach (liquid chlorine I use in my pool) on an old dresser I’d stripped because it was super splotchy and I wanted to seal over the bare wood. I had no idea if it would work, but it was all I could think of to try. The 10% bleach worked beautifully for me. Later I found out that bleaching wood was a thing. Lol
Thank you for the information on the difference of the damage between white water rings and dark rings. I have several pieces of furniture with just the surface finish damage, so now I feel like I might be able to refinish them myself. Thanks again Angie!
Gorgeously refinished!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much for watching!
