  • I found this dresser and side table at the thrift store, and while I don’t know who the maker is of the piece, I couldn’t pass up this Kent Coffey Perspecta Broyhill Brasilia inspired design. In this video I’m going to remove all the tinted lacquer finish, fix some pretty gnarly water stains, repair veneer damage, and bring this piece back to life. Hope you enjoy!

Nicely done! I have one tip to pass on. I have yet to see any furniture refinisher use a tack rag properly. Unfold the tack rag entirely so it is completely open. It will be 36” x 36” or whatever dimensions are on the package. Now just scrunch it up into a lose shape with no edges folded. Try that. It picks up more, gets into more difficult spots and lasts longer. Keep up the great work!

Yes!!! It's mid-century (squee!!!), but with you leaving it natural, it will appeal to even more types of decor. They would blend in with my eclectic/mid-century stuff, but Ima gonna show it to my friend (whoops!, I sorry went native speech) who has chosen rustic, but is hung up on a particular room. I did advise her not to mount any animal heads or things that they didn't personally end and have for dinner. (No antler or horn light fixtures or furniture, thank goodness!) in their new home. The possibilities are just endless... Thank you for the glove suggestion! The last thing I ever want to deal with are cuts and scarred up man-hands. You say you're not an artist and that you're learning, but what you do is pretty fantastic and none of us needs to ever quit learning!!! I love this!!!

I found the gloves after I shaved part of my fingernail off with a chisel. Not like a ton, but at some point I realized I sort of need these hands lol. I am always learning. I think it is what keeps me going with so many things. Can't ever learn enough! Rustic is a fun style. I think if I ever owned a farm house I'd probably go for rustic.

A couple of summers ago I refinished the bottom half of a hutch/credenza combo. I'm a beginner, and got stuck at the finish step, and just left it as is. This video provides me with a clear path forward and have even found a retailer that carries Howard's Feed and Wax. With a little research, I will be able to find a product similar to the General Finish product you used in this restoration (Canadians don't always have access to the identical ones used in the US). I now feel more confident about moving on to the hutch...right after I finish the dining room chairs.

They look fantastic natural. I have been dabbling in repairs on an old table I am working on - all the woodfillers I used ended up white when I sanded them back and no amount of messing about with them made them blend in. I tried wood fill crayons and markers as well to no avail. In the end I borrowed some of my mother's oil paints and mixed a few together and got a pretty good match. It takes a while for them to dry but I'm pleased with the result...

Fake the wood till you make it look like wood 😀! I figure if artists can paint these realistic portraits and landscapes, then we should at least be able to make things look like wood. The biggest problem I have is getting the color right. I think its just a trial and error thing - but blowing through veneer is one of the reasons I want to develop this skill. Historically I've passed on some high end pieces that would have likely had to have been painted and (in my area) probably wouldn't have sold as well. There have also been self inflicted damage as well. Worst case scenario you sand it back down and try again. Thank you Emer 💙

Congratulations! You have turned a beautiful piece into an absolutely stunningly, beautiful piece. You made the right decision by not staining it and I think your color match was wonderful. I love people that leave things natural. Great job. Take care, stay safe.

Your channel just came up on my feed. Thankyou for keeping the natural tone of that beautiful wood piece. It looks beautiful. I am addicted to watching furniture restoration videos and I have subscribed to your channel.
Thankyou, also, for not playing that hideous computerised "music" that some restorers play. Your music was so relaxing.
I dont know if you have seen Johns Furniture Restorers channel or Tom Johnson Antique Restorers. They are both experts at colour matching and graining. If you havent heard of them, they may be of some interest to you.

That came out looking bloody gorgeous! I loved the design of it before you started, but the refinish really brings out the smooth, silky wood. Nice one!

This was a piece that if the damage hadn't been so bad on the side table I might have done a nice 'soft' refresh to it. Such a cool design and build! Happy to have had the opportunity to work on these pieces!
