Hidden Gem Restoration: Thrift Store Dresser & Side Table Makeover
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 17 апр 2022
- I found this dresser and side table at the thrift store, and while I don’t know who the maker is of the piece, I couldn’t pass up this Kent Coffey Perspecta Broyhill Brasilia inspired design. In this video I’m going to remove all the tinted lacquer finish, fix some pretty gnarly water stains, repair veneer damage, and bring this piece back to life. Hope you enjoy!

Aside from your talents in wood finishing, there is one thing that so many overlook. The audio on your videos is just perfect. Thank you.
I've been waiting for this comment about my audio. I seriously appreciate it! Thank you Mario!
Completely agree.
Oh, absolutely 💯 correct. The volume doesn't change and I'm not constantly mashing my phone volume up and down. 😊
I love this, Emily. I would imagine you have already seen Dashner's work, but if you haven't, he's a genius at doing those kinds of veneer painting repairs. Give his work a look. I LOVE the contrasting colors of the wood. Exquisite!
Big fan of Dashner! Always learning something new from him.
Emily, you have a great eye! You choose pieces that are beautiful then bring out their natural beauty. You made the right choice not to color match and let the natural contrast of the two wood tones shine. Well done.
Turned out beautiful! I’m glad you left the wood natural. I happen to be one of the ones that appreciate the contrasting tones.
Thank you Criss!
I love the contrasting wood! Gorgeous job! 💚
Thank you so much💚💚
Thank you for the heads up on wearing gloves while using the epoxy. I love how you embarrassed the natural color of the wood. Just gorgeous!!!
Nice contrast of woods. Simplicity is usually best!
Good call on leaving it with the two natural tones. Makes a nice contrast, looks very attractive, even intentional.
Thank you Kathryn!
Love that you left it the natural wood! Beautiful!
Thank you!
Wow! The true colours are awesome. Gives it a slight Scandinavian feel to have the contrasting woods, which is appropriate given the minimalist influences on a lot of original mid-century furniture design.
They look so happy! When we know we look good, we feel good.
Like after you leave the spa and are glowing and happy! Thank you Patricia!
ROFL High quality H2O... My husband laughed out loud. I LOVE when wood can show its grain. These pieces are gorgeous and your fix looks great.
Thank you! 😊 My friend messaged me Gatoraiiddd when they saw it.
Perfect side business! I love this more than my regular job ✌🏻
Its very satisfying for sure!
Well done: I was worried that it was going to end up painted, but you honoured the wood beautifully.
Thank you!
Loving the Waterboy reference 😆 Thanks for the info on this stripper, I've been super curious. It did a great job, never seen a spray and eco product do so well! Another stunning restoration, Emily!
I want to run some more tests with it. I need to try it on paint and my 'favorite' white lacquer. Have to find the right pieces though... It worked really well for these two. I'm quite pleased, especially with the water clean up aspect instead of more chemicals.
Good choice not staining them! That wood really pops and you preserved the authenticity of the pieces.
Thank you!
I love how it turned out. I’m a furniture painter but I can appreciate your hard work and the beauty of this piece.
Thank you Leesa! I appreciate this! 💚
Nicely done! I have one tip to pass on. I have yet to see any furniture refinisher use a tack rag properly. Unfold the tack rag entirely so it is completely open. It will be 36” x 36” or whatever dimensions are on the package. Now just scrunch it up into a lose shape with no edges folded. Try that. It picks up more, gets into more difficult spots and lasts longer. Keep up the great work!
Thank your sharing the tip! I will definately try it next time!
This is GORGEOUS! I like that you left this piece natural (no, I am not an anti-paint person). 😁Thanks for the video. Good job with the spot camouflage.
Thank you Moranda! 💚😊
I would have literally squealed out loud if I had found these pieces!! I love MCM furniture so much! What you did to restore these beauties is hands down amazing, Emily!! I love, love them so much! Did you sell these or keep them?
I snatched the tag off these so fast when I saw them. They were too cool! Thank you Lori!
@@bubbaloozy9253 I am selling these ones. Haven't listed them yet as I was waiting to hear back from a friend who was interested.
@@ReconstructingEmily Gosh I think you can easily list it for 6k
Great restoration job! The style is not my absolute favorite, but kudos for respecting the design of the pieces and working on the corner repair. Much more desirable than covering with paint!
Thank you Laura! 💜
Not only are you very talented but you are also very generous! I watch a lot of flipper You-tubers and you send a lot of useful stuff to them! Thank you for sharing your talents, insights and lovely spirit!
Thank you Linda! I just want to see others succeed and often I learn things from others as well. 💙
So glad you refinished the beautiful wood instead of painting these. Very nicely done.
Thank you Stephanie!
It is gorgeous! Bravo!
Thank you Julia! 😊
I Love it Emily it's absolutely gorgeous
Thank you Kathleen 😊 ❤️
What a beautiful set of furniture. You did a great job restoring it to life.
It is great to see how meticulous you were with this restoration. I love the natural wood tones. It shows the individuality of the pieces unlike when refinishers make them all the same shade of walnut. I also appreciate your usage of the music as background music, not overpowering the video. Thanks. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Deb! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Emily, just got off the phone with these 2 pieces of furniture & they're beyond happy for the new lives you gave them!! They also stated that they missed your rhyming. LOL!! Hoping all is well, Dirty Jersey out!!
I was making this video thinking Mike G. is gonna call me out for not having a poem. You don't disappoint! lol I couldn't think of anything at the time when I was editing. Sometimes I can't shut it off, and other times its like being in a word desert. Hoping for something on the next one!
You did an incredible job with these pieces! I love the choice to the natural contrasts in the wood, I think it was an excellent decision!
Yes!!! It's mid-century (squee!!!), but with you leaving it natural, it will appeal to even more types of decor. They would blend in with my eclectic/mid-century stuff, but Ima gonna show it to my friend (whoops!, I sorry went native speech) who has chosen rustic, but is hung up on a particular room. I did advise her not to mount any animal heads or things that they didn't personally end and have for dinner. (No antler or horn light fixtures or furniture, thank goodness!) in their new home. The possibilities are just endless... Thank you for the glove suggestion! The last thing I ever want to deal with are cuts and scarred up man-hands. You say you're not an artist and that you're learning, but what you do is pretty fantastic and none of us needs to ever quit learning!!! I love this!!!
I found the gloves after I shaved part of my fingernail off with a chisel. Not like a ton, but at some point I realized I sort of need these hands lol. I am always learning. I think it is what keeps me going with so many things. Can't ever learn enough! Rustic is a fun style. I think if I ever owned a farm house I'd probably go for rustic.
absolutely spectacular! That wood just GLOWS! Well done!
I love these pieces! The contrast colors are perfect for them. I don’t think that I would have noticed the repair if you hadn’t pointed it out. Great job!
Thank you Kay 😊
The natural wood is spectacular. I've never seen that design before, either. In addition to the fabulous handles, the base on the large dresser is just wonderful. I hope someone can ID them. Beautiful work. Thank you for sharing it.
Thank you Misha! Still not comments identifying this one.
I love the natural wood and the contrast parts.
Very cool . I need a MCM piece in my life
You technically have one in your shop 😀. But I know what you mean. Want me to mail you this 300lb broyhill that I found? ❤️
I am a great fan of Howards products! I recommend them to anyone looking to rescue a piece of furniture or to keep a piece in best condition.
Totally agree! Very easy to use!
It's a repair even De Niro would love. Because Goodfilla....yeah, um, anyway...What a wonderful job bringing those pieces out of their funk! I really admire your work :)
I just laughed for like a minute straight. This is fantastic lol! Thank you JB
😂🤣😂👍🏻
Excellent, JB!🌸
Lovely job and thank you for showcasing all the details of your process. I do this type of work and I think viewers don't always appreciate all the steps.
Thank you Carren! 😊
The wood grain is spectacular 😍 excellent decision 10/10
Wooo! 10/10 !! 💜😊 Thank you Shaeliza!!
WOW. Very nice job. I like it when people reveille the beauty of the wood rather than just paint over everything. Although I also like a combination of wood and paint.
Thank you Eddy! 😊
The natural tones are gorgeous! And your repair gets high marks. Thanks for sharing your talent with us. 💕
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching Carla!
Good work on the repair. Those pieces are quite lovely! Good decision to leave them "au natural". I always enjoy your videos!!
Thank you so much Gail! ❤️
I love the contrasting wood tones. It turned out beautifully.
Thank you Catherine!
It turned out beautiful, you certainly made the correct decision about leaving it au la natural! Hi from Murfreesboro Tennessee
Thank you Cassie! Hi from Florida - I was in Tennessee last September! It was gorgeous!
These are really spectacular, Emily! I personally like the two-tone look of these pieces. You did a wonderful job with the repair. You are just getting better and better at this. Your jokes are ALWAYS funny and I love your rhymes, too!🌸
Thank you Deborah! I'm becoming really fond of the color differentiation. It adds such visual interest to these pieces. 💜
Eu ñ ri pq ñ sei inglês
Mas o trabalho ficou maravilhoso!!
@@rozanapires5311 Obrigada!
A couple of summers ago I refinished the bottom half of a hutch/credenza combo. I'm a beginner, and got stuck at the finish step, and just left it as is. This video provides me with a clear path forward and have even found a retailer that carries Howard's Feed and Wax. With a little research, I will be able to find a product similar to the General Finish product you used in this restoration (Canadians don't always have access to the identical ones used in the US). I now feel more confident about moving on to the hutch...right after I finish the dining room chairs.
What gorgeous wood. So glad you kept the natural tones. Wonderful!
Thank you Ann!
I really do like the furniture design and the finish you've given them. well done.
Simply magnificent! I selfishly would never sell these upon completion. Truly amazing!❤❤❤
Thank you Kristin!
See, that's why I subscribed -- only high quality H2O!
Glad you saved these. Beautiful.
Haha! Thank you Rosehaven Farm! 😀😊
Both pieces look fantastic. You brought out the book match perfectly. As far as the repair, it looked great also. Some toner and it’d disappear as is. A stubborn spot can always turn into a light knot.
Oooo! I like this idea. I just picked up a new can of toner too. A light knot is a great idea as well! Thank you for sharing JS!
I LOVE the way you did this piece and I’m soooo flag you left the natural wood. I was imagining where I would pit those pieces in my home!!!
Thank you for your kindness!
Wow! Fantastic. Love the contrasting wood. Thanks for posting. 👍
Thank you very much!
Looks absolutely gorgeous. I wish younger people would love this and not just throw older furniture away.
Thank you! 😊
Super job!!!!! The wood is beautifully refinished and looks great.
Thank you very much!
Wonderful video, just enough explanation, good quality audio. These 2 pieces are just gorgeous. I am so glad you rescued them.
Thank you so much for watching!
Beautiful finish and super job. I really enjoy the way the mfr had a different tone/color on wood trim pieces.
I love the contrasting color and the wood grain just pops all around!
Thank you Kevin!
I think the contrasting wood tonnes are stunning Emily.
Thank you Sharon!! 😊
was hoping you would leave it as it is. beautiful piece.
I love the 2 tone timber. My favourite!.
Great find..Great job.
Love the lines on the peice. Beautiful peice to work on. Love the pulls on the peice. Unique.
Thank you Lydia!
Yes love the contrasting wood tones. Great to see that beautiful wood now instead of covering it up as it was for all those years with the degraded finish. 👍
They look fantastic natural. I have been dabbling in repairs on an old table I am working on - all the woodfillers I used ended up white when I sanded them back and no amount of messing about with them made them blend in. I tried wood fill crayons and markers as well to no avail. In the end I borrowed some of my mother's oil paints and mixed a few together and got a pretty good match. It takes a while for them to dry but I'm pleased with the result...
Thank you for sharing your experience Diana! I watched someome use some high end oil based color matching products while researching. They looked an aweful lot like oil paints. Did you find that when yoh sealed it the color stayed true?
@@ReconstructingEmily They seem to - I waited at least a week for them to thorougly dry before putting any topcoat on - I am using home made wipe on poly...
Those are stunning with the contrasting tones and the repair was great. I couldn't tell on the video.
Thank you Christi!
Stunning! The veneer repair was well done. ❤ I had to watch again because I enjoy your channel so much
Just stunning, Emily.
Thank you ❤️
Absolutely gorgeous! I just watched another refinisher with a very similar piece with even less blemishes paint it all black. I wanted to cry.
Thank you Carla! 💙
Good choice on letting the wood shine through! Took a great piece and made it fantastic.
Thank you Brenda! 😊
Beautiful! I wouldn't change a thing. Love the natural look.
Thank you so much!
The wood grain on these pieces inside and out amazing
Thank you so much Rita!
What unusual pieces. I like the variations of the wood and those handles! Talk about unique. You gave these pieces just the right amount of tender loving care. What special pieces to own. Great find! 🙂👍
Thank you Holly!
Beautiful. I think you made the right choice to leave the natural finish.
Thank you!
I think you did a great job! While my personal preference is for darker wood, I would have left this natural as well, it looks great! The person who gets this will be very lucky and love it! I love your work.
Thank you Jeri! I love a good walnut brown tone on a piece too!
What a great restoration Emily! That corner repair looks pretty darn good. Most wouldn't even see that unless it was pointed out to them! 💗💗💗
Thank you!! 😊
Beautiful Job!!!!!!!!! Very well done!!!!!😊👍
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful! I like how u recondition the insides as well!
I love the contrasting wood, I think it really brings out those amazing handles.
Oh boy! this is scrumptious. My guess is this is a Kent Coffey. I have one that looks very alike. Well done!
Thank you Nancy!
Beautiful, good choices. It really lets the pieces shine
Thank you Laurel! 😊
I can't believe how the wood tones have really enhanced this piece. I admire your patience but it proves good preparation reeps rewards. Well done ....again. Love your videos 😀🤗
Thank you so much 😀
Love your choice to keep the variegated wood tones natural. You did a great job. It’s gorgeous
Thank you Christine! I appreciate this 😊
This is absolutely gorgeous!!!
Wow, stunning. You totally made the right call in keeping it natural.
Thank you Linda!!
Very very nice work on restoring these pieces! The original wood showing up is truly amazing!
Thank you Paty 😊
Emily they turned out absolutely wonderfully. Bravo girl. And the repair was excellent. If you hadn't pointed it out at the end I don't think I would have noticed. Well done for giving it a go. I bust through veneer on a buffet drawer. Haven't a clue what type of veneer it is. Very pale. That could be due to age. No idea how to repair it and I'm livid because I want to strip the paint off it now and just celebrate it's natural beauty. Don't know what to do.
Fake the wood till you make it look like wood 😀! I figure if artists can paint these realistic portraits and landscapes, then we should at least be able to make things look like wood. The biggest problem I have is getting the color right. I think its just a trial and error thing - but blowing through veneer is one of the reasons I want to develop this skill. Historically I've passed on some high end pieces that would have likely had to have been painted and (in my area) probably wouldn't have sold as well. There have also been self inflicted damage as well. Worst case scenario you sand it back down and try again. Thank you Emer 💙
@@ReconstructingEmily Thanks Emily. I might just do that. Gonna have to get me one of those kits.
Loved this, and it was so relaxing watching and listening to your background music!
Thank you Ginger 😊
Congratulations! You have turned a beautiful piece into an absolutely stunningly, beautiful piece. You made the right decision by not staining it and I think your color match was wonderful. I love people that leave things natural. Great job. Take care, stay safe.
Thank you so much Kathy! 💚😊
Your channel just came up on my feed. Thankyou for keeping the natural tone of that beautiful wood piece. It looks beautiful. I am addicted to watching furniture restoration videos and I have subscribed to your channel.
Thankyou, also, for not playing that hideous computerised "music" that some restorers play. Your music was so relaxing.
I dont know if you have seen Johns Furniture Restorers channel or Tom Johnson Antique Restorers. They are both experts at colour matching and graining. If you havent heard of them, they may be of some interest to you.
Good call leaving it natural-that is Beautiful wood!! 🌟
Thank you V Bee! I was shocked at the walnut veneer on this piece. So good!
The two-toned wood colors took this piece to the next level. Absolutely stunning!
Thank you Aryana. 😊
Corner looks good, like the contrasting wood tones!!! Keep em comin'
Definitely going to be a useful skill to build with repairs! Thank you Mark!
Love the contrast, really makes it stand out, beautiful
Thank you Dawn 😊
Absolutely beautiful!! I love your finishing choice!
A great job.....and I love that you keep it in the original color!
Thank you!
Absolutely stunning. And I really appreciate learning about the non-toxic stripper, thank you!
I am happy to share this kind of thing! Hopefully I'll get to test this stuff out on some other pieces as well. Thank you Colleen!
this looks unbelievably beautiful. You did a fantastic job.
Thank you Carole!
Beautiful work. I so appreciate your attention to detail and how you take care of insides as well as outsides.
Thank you Karen! 💚
That came out looking bloody gorgeous! I loved the design of it before you started, but the refinish really brings out the smooth, silky wood. Nice one!
This was a piece that if the damage hadn't been so bad on the side table I might have done a nice 'soft' refresh to it. Such a cool design and build! Happy to have had the opportunity to work on these pieces!
So excited that I found your channel by accident, you did such an amazing job. I can't wait to watch more of your videos. I also loved your Dr. Who tshirt, it brings back so many great memories watching it with my son when he was in his teens.
Thank you Linda! ❤️ Glad to bring back some great memories 😊 Such a fun show! I am happy you accidentally found me!
