  • The neighbors were doing some cleaning in the basement and did not believe that this cabinet could regain its former glory. The intention was to preserve the original materials as much as possible and at the lowest possible price.
    While doing the work, we found a small treasure in an unseen place.

    Absolutely worth saving. Please note this is not a criticism, but a question... have you considered using pegs instead of nails? Nails tend to work themselves loose or out over time, while well glued pegs are period to piece's construction and will strengthen the bottom just as your adding chunks with glue on other parts of bottom.

      I didn't think about it during the renovation, but I think you're right. We don't get to reconstruct such elements often, but I will definitely consider your solution in the future. Thanks for leaving a comment and advice :)

      Maybe horseshoe-type nails? Old nails kind of resemble those. I really thought that old bottle was going to turn out to be a laudanum one.

    • @cferguson3368
      @cferguson3368 10 месяцев назад +7

      Square/cut nails literally cut the wood because they have 4 sharp distinct sides with sharp edges. A modern nail pushes into the wood & displaces it because it is round & smooth. This is why antique nails do less damage than modern nails. Modern horseshoe nails are similar in look to square nails, but are still pretty smooth. They do make thinner ones that would displace less wood, but not sure if they are better than round nails. It's a good question.

      Good tip. I will look around for the nails you mentioned and try them out at the next opportunity.

      I did some rearranging, decorating with Goodwill things and a few wooden pieces out of the garage , cleaning my room,I got a few cheap wooden pieces I can stack, we both have a room for crafts, starting seeds and our bedroom. I made 2 salads (apple salad and chicken dip). Today I'm going through papers to shred, I got that Gracie dog 5lbs of sweet potatoes in the dehydrator that Wes cut up that Wes picked up Saturday when his daughter took him with her to pick up her order at Wal-Mart. There's always markdowns to look at. I hope you had a great weekend but it seems like there is no time when there's garden growing. My daughter is coming 3/9 for our grandchild's wedding and hopefully she gets to bring her only grandchild. It's in Indiana and we live in Illinois 40 minutes from there.
