Vivo video looks so good man...
I like how it handles contrast. The Xiaomi video isn't as pretty RAW like this, but it's a little easier to edit if you have to drop it in next to another camera.
vivo have autofocus
As an LG V50 user, I can totally vouch about the LCF and Gain control. It's so stupidly easy to use and it clearly shows the difference compared to auto setting. This makes me miss LG in the smartphone market even more.
At the end of the day, i just want options right? Sometimes i want easy voice priority processing, but I also want to be able to dig in if I want to.
If companies just make more things available, I'll be a happy camper. Hide it behind more deeper settings options if need be!
AGREE!
it's kinda crazy how good the footage looks and how muffled and low quality the sound is, such a stark contrast, like 2 different worlds.
especially on the xiaomi 13 ultra the sound was so bad at certain times.
i never really paid the mics too much attention since i use my camera 99% of the time for photography.
I've been taking to recording locally on these mics, and then syncing in post. It's such a bummer that we have to do that, when we could just turn off this noise reduction.
My Lumia 920 still has the best audio of any phone I've ever had. And I had G8X, V60s, Moto Zs... It's crazy to think concerts don't look too good on that Lumia, but they sound outstanding.
Oh man. That was one of my first copyright strikes on this channel. I uploaded audio from the 930, and it was good enough to content ID match. 😅
Lol, I still have one I picked up a years ago brand new for $50, good sound but the quad DAC on my V60 is easily superior, night and day when using my Fostex TH900 headphones.
@@bigcdub To be fair, there's no such thing as built-in DAC on smartphones around a decade ago.
@@FAT8893 To be fair, you obviously need to do better research. All smartphones have some sort of DAC, “digital to analog converter”, LG has been one of the few to incorporate the high end ESS Sabre DAC’s, like the ES9219 quad DAC in the V60, and has been using them since the V10. The DAC on their last flagship, the V60, which came out about 5 years ago, was tested at a 132 SNR, and supports DSD, MQA, ALAC, and many other formats…
With my headphones on, i noticed that the audio from the Vivo X100 Pro had the balance tilted towards the left side, whereas the 13 Ultras audio was more balanced but the quality was much inferior.
An issue I had with editing (and this was cut on the phone), where the mics did a safety track, and that turned into a mono output. Blergh.
Damn the Xiaomi really does change up the sound.
I always loved the audio capture from the Nokia Lumia 1520 back in the day. I don't know why audio is always such an afterthought when it's so important.
Ps. Which mic you reviewing? 👀
Can't talk about them yet LOL, why I had to blur a shot 😅
It is the same mic and settings for both phones though.
It's weird because you'd think audio would be more important on a device primarily used for phone calls and such. I wish noticed the difference in audio quality in WhatsApp voice notes depending on the phone the person is using
Couldn't agree more! ...
I have nothing else to say.
This is why we need front facing speaker/mic again on smartphones. To heck with having "tHiN bEZelS", give me real audio all day.
Buy sony phones
These are flagships
They have to keep looks, sound etc balanced
2:20 Nice listening to some nature. 🎶🐦
And yes, consumers should be able to have an option to turn off aggressive artificial intelligence audio processing if they choose to. 🔊🔈🔈
Yep
About time audio got an upgrade
Need more options for audio settings
I hope they add 4k30 cinematic video on the front camera the next time. I'd jump ship if that happens.
I used to want some kind of "portrait video" but now the natural focus fall off on the main rear sensors is so good, I kinda just stick to the natural bokeh.
@@SomeGadgetGuy it's cool but often times I like to vlog and look at the screen so a 4k30 portrait video would be very useful especially if you want to maximize the blur for people or things not to be included or seen in your background while looking at the screen. the back camera for me comes in handy when I'm shooting other people it has better sensors but I just wanna be able to see myself so I can frame the shot better so a 4k30 portrait video would be nice.
Totally agree with you. I'm so sad that this area is quite neglected. I always loved my *Nokia 808 PureView (2012)* with 'Rich Recording'. HAAC microphones record superb audio - I think they are still better than mics of today's flagships?!?
It serve me great for recordings of our band playing or some concerts (examples on my channel - any recording that start with 'Stična'). My brother (musician) was astonished about quality of mics.
And what's with *Nokia OZO (Audio)* technology now? This looked very promising also? 🤷♂🤷♂
Yeah, its nice to have all these audio enhancement thingy that focuses in human voice but it is still bwtter to have a switch to disable those and have the raw audio captured by the microphone. My LG G6 can record video with way better audio than modern phones because it doesn't have those enhancements..
Yup! Up to the V50, I still bring that phone out from time to time JUST because it handles audio better.
The best phone camera audio Ive ever recorded is with my trusty Lumia 1020 and nothing ive owned since has gotten close
Lumia's were the gold standard for SURE.
Oh, how I love my V60.
Haven't watch the video yet but for better audio just get an LG pho..... Oh wait
You should watch the video...
@@SomeGadgetGuy lol I did. Notice you mentioned it and then some.
Yeah we seem to be stuck on the “only spec that counts” the camera I agree about the audio side but also the audio output to headphones the quality is not the best again something LG was good at having good built in DACS
That VIvo footage absolutely blows away the Xiaomi. Really impressive stuff. Too bad they're not widely (or basically at all) available in North America. We really miss out on some great options due to the China-phobia out there.
There is a growing market, and number of options, for wireless audio (Like the Rode mics) with optional noise cancellation AND (the most important part, I thnk) on-device recording at really budget-friendly prices. Some of the sub-$150 models are REALLY nipping at the heels of things like the Rode Pros at 1/3 the price. Maybe missing things like 32-bit float recording. I wish they had been around back in my radio days ... they would have been so much easier to rig up on location than the big wireless packs and XLR cables and such.
I go back and look at some concert footage I have of Trivium from the og htc one.... Man that thing had some gooooooood mics for the time. Looked and sounded better than what my friends galaxy would put out at shows.
HTC put a LOT of effort into designing their mics too. Another feature often neglected.
@@SomeGadgetGuymiss them in the phone space......
Getting better/more natural sounding audio, would be a very nice addition, ngl. Especially if we can have a mix of RAW+JPEG style toggle wherein, both the RAW audio and the edited audio OOTP is accessible, and given how much improvements we're getting in terms of the multicore performances, I don't think this would be a tough task to implement in terms of the hardware.
Oh that would be cool. If you could capture a "safety track" of unprocessed audio. Yeah. I'd be down with that.
Really good concept. I've never seen this video idea explored. I think the Xiaomi 13 Pro Ultra showcased the difficulty of getting this right. It struggled a bit with trying to highlight the human voice without "distorting" (that's how I heard it) the background noise.
It's crazy how the built-in mics from even the most expensive cameras can't get close to the quality you get from a basic cheap 10 usd lav mic.
On the topic of smartphones, it would help if the OEMs started actually giving you choices rather than slapping a hundred AI do-it-for-yous to the spec sheet, but then the Pro in their product names would no longer stand for profoundly condescending.
The mics are pretty solid. We just can't turn off all the software that wrecks the output LOL.
lol! It's infuriating that some brands will refuse to give you the camera controls you can get with Open Camera until you option up to the Pro Ultra Megabucks model, and even buy that point won't give you any audio control at all.
to be fair though the lav mics are typically closer to you and pick up your sound clearly. if you distance yourself from your phones chances are it's going to capture the ambient noise too because it thinks you and the ambience are one and the same.
also finger print sensor on the back like old LG! or power on/off on the top!
The best place to put it, but with these new MASSIVE camera sensors, I'd be happy sticking with the power button fingerprint.
I think the only reason why audio processing has always been like the afterthought/not care enough in modern/flagship phones is because dongle dac/amps nowadays are just so cheap yet capable of delivering better than the onboard or even an intergraded dac like what LG done back in the day. After finding that out a few months ago, I sold my LG for the Sony Xperia 1 IV, and utilized what I had which is a 40$ dongle dac/amp Hidizs S9 Pro and god damn it sounds so much better in terms of audio quality and volume compared to the LG G8 and LG V60 I had.
Dongle DAC won't help this though. I could hook this up to my old field recording kit, and this would still be giving me issues.
Just what I needed! Been digging up my old USB C mics and trying to set up a video workflow, but trying to get decent sound is often infuriating with new phones.
I mostly now record off device and sync in post when I need to. 😢
@@SomeGadgetGuy yeah. But it's so annoying to sync if you've done a million takes!
It's one of the reasons i stick with Resolve now. The built in audio sync tools are AMAZING.
Wow. The difference between the Vivo and Xiaomi is pretty amazing. An on/off switch WOULD be helpful.
Want so bad buddy. I understand using it for auto video, but shut it off for manual mode video.
@@SomeGadgetGuyXiaomi 14 Pro/ ultra Vs OPP 7 ultra.. world nice 🙂
I 100% agree. I like the controls the LG had even if I won't use them every day, I would like to have the option. I also want better sound from the ports. My laptop sounds a LOT better than my budget phone from almost 4 yrs ago but that's what you would expect from just a decent phone. Still better than my old Asus that clips audio wayyy too much.
This is a total aside but did you see that CMF by nothing just produced the nothing neckband pro with ANC? And apparently it's priced like between 30 and $40 when you convert from rupees. I heard a rumor it's going to be released in the US in April.
I've never tried and nothing product but I'll celebrate anybody reviving the neckband form factor. I guess there's still a market for it in India. Beyerdynamic byrd anc is already sold out everywhere and is way more expensive so I'm optimistic this Nothing product could be an option for neck band enthusiasts.
I love my neckbands, just so much more comfortable to use, currently using an Oppo Enco M31 and I'm guessing I'll upgrade to the Nothing band once this gives up on me
What really grinds my gears is phones recording stereo-audio when they clearly cannot center the balance. So many instructional videos online where the audio is panned on one channel only. Like Vivo here, where the freeway and your audio is on the left. Xiaomi is in center.
The saddest thing is that even GCAM mods, which supposed to allow you to tweak and control the Google cam application does not allow you to change the audio codec to lossless codec or even to raise the sampling bitrate. I use my phone to capture live jam events, and while the video quality is beautiful, the sound, which is why I'm capturing it, is so sub-standard for musicians. What a shame!
It's awful. These companies WRECK audio with this kind of processing.
I was very impressed with the Vivo.
Me too.
We need a mini phone sub or some modular addon
Nice video. And please yes betywr audio!
After my lg v60, audio on android is disappointing. The s23 ultra speaker is unconvincing and no 3.5mm socket.
Ios at least has truebit audio output handy for my dac dongle.
I think the main camera on a phone should switch to 35mm full frame equivalent field of view. I stopped using smartphone camera an bought a dedicated camera because 24mm field of view is just too wide for most of the situations.
Vivo audio is noticeably better than the Xiaomi which is actually terrible!
Hey man, which cam are using for that outro clip where credits are rolling up? and the one at 1:00 ?
Vivo.
I mentioned this on the earlier Patreon release, but as someone who owns nice Headphones and In Ear Monitors I'd really like to see native support for bit perfect playback. No more of this resampling to 48 kHz garbage 👿
Yeah the video Looks very VERY Good On every device ! Great Video ! 💦💧💦💧💧 :)
Totally agree! The audio captured on X100 pro is not that good or sound natural. My iPhones have better microphones.
x100 pro is only in the left channel out in the field... weird?
Juan I didn't understand which shots were with a mic and which weren't.
Next time could you have an icon on screen that would let us know which is external mic audio and which is built in audio?
All shots were with the same external mic. The point is, even when you use an external mic, a phone might be wrecking your audio with this processing.
@@SomeGadgetGuyOk, got ya. That makes sense. You could hear that difference in sound, which considering it was the same mic, is pretty bad processing by the phone...
As far as high quality consumer audio, it's a shame there couldn't be some kind of collaboration between a phone company and an audio company like fiio, qudelik, noondrop. Even if it was just a special edition or something, audiophiles tolerate extremely high margins. Probably just a fantasy though
The xiaomi by the to be train infrastructure sounds like you are underwater
I always disliked noise reduction processing, so i use 3rd party camera apps to record unprocessed audio, which is sad considering the price of phones
Exactly, the rest of the native camera app is so good, we shouldn't have to leave the app to record better audio.
Visiting the most dangerous place in California, the freeway
Wish LG would make a comeback with their phones again...
Same... Sigh...
I miss LG 😢
Every day...
@@SomeGadgetGuy yeah man when I saw you thumbnail about audio. Only phone I thought of was LG.
Me too. Shame that the lack of marketing and popular sellout influence killed it.
The x100 pro sounded so much better, definitely more natural sounding.
Still some issues with auto gain, but WAY less distortion-y.
Without LG and with Huawei being banned, the market for high end smartphones suck and is now so boring. Less choice for us consumers.
For me, only Sony got my vote because they still keep the headphone jack and microSD card slot on flagship phones.
Vivo doing better❤️🔥
Not too shabby right!
wow, the xiaomi audio is bad

AGC is so wack. Automatic Gain Control.
Ugh that sucks too. AGC+NR is ruthless.
@@SomeGadgetGuy One has to be able to disable them if they are not adjustable by the user.
even on a iphone my parents use cheap chinese mics and it's far better
Apple was so far ahead on USB audio. Androids CAN be good but it takes deliberate effort from the manufacturer.
Then... buy Sony.
Simple
Vivo and Xiaomi has the worst audio... Oppo and 1+ are far better
