Watching videos from 2019 then coming back to the older ones really shows me how much you have grown! Your whole personality lights up a room and you seem so much more comfortable on camera now! It's great seeing such a great person blossom like you have Pete. Keep doing what you love and keep making great videos to make people like me happy and intrigued :)
the best part of watching your old videos is seeing the comments "you're underrated, you deserve a million subscribers!"...love this. such a great motivator to me. thanks for being great.
My 4 kids (2-9yrs) want to start a RUclips channel and of course this mama is somewhat clueless when it comes to filming and photography so trying to graps and learn as much as I can so we can get these kids started on this. Thanks for another great helpful video! I agree with others found my favorite channel
Not only are your videos super helpful, but your music's on point!! Oh man, I'm always scrunching my face at the end of your videos like "damn, that sounds good."
This is the first video I saw from Peter, subbed right away. It's funny seeing it now and how much his channel has grown. Love seeing when good creators/people make it big!
I use pot lights ($8 at Walmart?) with some LED bulbs ($5 for a pack of 3?) and I literally made some softboxes out of cardboard boxes, aluminum foil, parchment paper, and matte black spray paint and they work like a charm. I've done a little product photography and it looks great.
It's so crazy to see the quality and production difference between your videos from when I first started watching you to now. Amazing, man! Give me so much hope.
I'm so glad I found this channel. I haven't come across a video yet that wasn't full of helpful tips that I can use in not only my photos, but videos as well. Thanks Peter!!
Finally, a serious and direct lighting solution video. So many other people are like "oh get THIS brand of light and get a lightbox, and get these other pieced of kit. Dont worry its only 200$. I just need something to get started so i can invest in the big things. Many thanks Peter!
Would love to see a tutorial on how you made your intro (00:09-00:14). It's amazing how well you introduce your stuff with that 5 sec clip! A lot of people make them longer but I really like the short, precise, and informative look of yours.
You have completely rejuvenated me. I've lost most of my desire to film over the past few years but I just watched about 40 of your videos. You have brought me back to living filming. Thank you for that. You have a new fan.
Great video Peter! I find lighting so intimidating. This video has really made me feel more at ease with the concept. I can’t get enough of your videos - I discovered you about two weeks and can’t get enough of your content! Thank you.
Thanks Peter! I just tried this with a work light and some stuff I had at home (including a LED bike light as a rim light!) and my videos look 10X better. This is by far the easiest, cheapest hack yet :)
I fell for it. I was watching this thinking, whoa this lighting set up! Must be one of his earlier RUclips videos before he became Master McKinnon and then BAM 💥 perfect lighting 😂Great Video as usual.
As a DIY guy that remodels stuff around the house I've been wanting to change out my dual head halogen lights on a work stand to LED ecause they are so hot. Now I have another excuse to do so because I can use the LEDs for household remodeling projects as well as making videos. So, the video may be a few years old but still providing value. Thanks Peter for creating and posting it.
thank you!!! this is exactly what i needed! something good and cheap. and i was about to do 2-3 day research to figure out the best price to quality ratio DIY Lights but now i can relax, watch your video and the best part is that i know whatever you will show us will be really good and useful. thank you for giving us so many good advices
I can't stress this enough... I hardly EVER subscribe to a channel, but this guy! Simple, Informative and Effective. Out of the hundreds of videos I've watched, this is handsdown the best. Subscribed! Keep it comming, I'd love to see the ISO, shutter and setiings you used. Regardless, thanks fir the upload, keep posting stuff like this mister
I'm just starting out and found your channel/tutorials. Super helpful for a new youtuber looking to start upping the quality of their videos. Thanks for showing all of these easy to follow and understand setups.
Man, Peter McKinnon, your B roll video brought me here. Between the two, I feel like I just took a $1000.00 course on video making. Thanks man. Hands down the best and most information I've gathered from RUclips to date.
I came across this channel recently and have to say, I am really glad I did. Good info and quality content! I can't believe there are not a ton more subscribers.
Not too long ago I started doing some story writing. Now I wanna add photography to my to do list. I have just stumbled upon your channel and am very intrigued. Hope to learn more tips on taking photos. My goal is to be good enough for my aunts upcoming wedding. Cheers mate! Much love! Sayonara.
I''m too lucky that i found this amazing channel!! peter you are inspirational!!i'm watching his videos from last two days and i can't stop myself because i'm getting this much knowledge at one place! thank you so much man!
Dope! I would cut the time buy building the box first then spray painting it black and adding the aluminum after its built , and also paint the PVC pipes black for a cleaner look , over all great job !
Super-useful 'Lighting 101' tutorial, Peter. This should be required viewing for all beginning photographers and videographers! I studied lighting in college (many, many years ago) and the setup you advocate is exactly like the makeshift rig I used at home to produce my class assignments. It's a bit rough, but with time and practice some very impressive results can be achieved. Thanx again! 👏👍
Very interesting take on lighting! I was about to purchase the ring light and then saw a video about the reflection of the ring in the eyes (true or not?!). Then, I thought about a soft box, but those are just massive for my small space - and they aren't something that can just be picked up and moved around! I remembered my husband was trying to put together some lighting for me a while back with some stands he created, so I thought, why not try those and see where we land?! I will try your adapting your ideas to what I have before purchasing something else. Thanks so much for your suggestions!! Brilliant!
I just brought a light setup today and it's crazy how much difference it likes, I haven't even added diffusers or gels or anything so it's going to look even better when I'm finished but the difference is crazy already
Man this video is so underrated! I think the thumbnail scares people cause it kind of looks like a really high production value when the whole point was to make this a cheap and easy tutorial. perhaps you just could've had a side by side comparison of before and after the lights where turned on.
Brilliant, you simplified the process I actually got a good insight into how to set up a scene with great lighting. Other vids I watched over complicated the whole process. Thanks
Wonderful and informative content, Peter! You caused me to exact a solicitation to my local Home Depot on New Years Day....hey, their fault for being open!! But I now have the LED light, the foam boards....now all I need is the gel. Thanks for all the incredible tips!!! 6D Mark ii is being shipped....I'm stoked!!!
oh man i am a subscriber since you had 600 hundred subs. You're a blogger and then the gear and everything else I have never seen a youtuber get that many subs in such a remount of time. Keep it up Greez from Germany
Cheap lights to pro lights does not matter to me I will buy both if that what it takes to finally learn all about lighting as those who act like they know don't and just want views and those that do know are quiet and want you to buy these bs courses that teach you 99% of new youtubers stuff but nothing about what you are looking for. Thank you every video I watch so far this is 5th you are real!
Fill a paint bucket with cement, stick a piece of PVC pipe in it. Boom, you have a light stand for your clamp light. Use a larger 5 gallon bucket and you can make a more elaborate tree for draping material. If you use an LED shoplight, I suggest buying a roll of cine foil, ala black wrap, about $30. Excellent for giving your shoplight a set of barn doors, controlling spill, etc. Great job on this. Keep up the good work!
Pirate Pete, I just came across this old video of yours because im looking to step up my skills. Def some really good information here. But... it did make me realize that everyone starts somewhere on youtube and well... you've come a long way with your quality. Keep up the good work friend. 👍
Peter, would you be able to do a quick video on selecting gels. There are so many different ones, and a quick beginners type of tutorial would be awesome. Thanks.
It's so weird seeing this in 2020. Woah, Peter! 🤯
Yeah right? The audio is so not PM 2020 videos.
Super Weird

Parents like you are the best kind
Not only are your videos super helpful, but your music's on point!! Oh man, I'm always scrunching my face at the end of your videos like "damn, that sounds good."
The main reason I watch this channel is because *Peter* seems like *a really nice guy* . I feel *happy* watching his videos.
also you can learn something too
Yeah thats true
he understands the ghetto-solution culture
This is the first video I saw from Peter, subbed right away. It's funny seeing it now and how much his channel has grown. Love seeing when good creators/people make it big!

Happy to help!
No, Peter, YOU have a great day!
I'm learning tons from your vids, since I'm new to photography, and you're entertaining. Keep it up!
Finally, a serious and direct lighting solution video. So many other people are like "oh get THIS brand of light and get a lightbox, and get these other pieced of kit. Dont worry its only 200$. I just need something to get started so i can invest in the big things. Many thanks Peter!

The Only problem with your channel is that there aren't more videos... Thank you for an absolutely amazing channel!
this video is proof that it's the artist, not the tools, that really make the difference. thanks!
Great video Peter! I find lighting so intimidating. This video has really made me feel more at ease with the concept. I can’t get enough of your videos - I discovered you about two weeks and can’t get enough of your content! Thank you.
Thanks Peter! I'm working on upping my channel quality, and I'm confident these lighting tips will help! 😊
I love your enthusiasm towards photography. Keep doing what you are doing 😀👍
Thanks Peter! I just tried this with a work light and some stuff I had at home (including a LED bike light as a rim light!) and my videos look 10X better. This is by far the easiest, cheapest hack yet :)
can you make a video on how to light products?
He hit 6M subs, this shows the hard work and the consistency, doesn't matter what gear you use, it all works out in the end!
The comment section is so chill here I love it
+Koegon That's whassup!
What a twist oliver
Watching Peter’s evolution; 4 years makes a difference. From talented to polished.
any tips for getting the confidence to film in public in a vlog format?
It can be tough at first! It was 100% weird for me when I started - Perhaps I'll do a video on that.
Peter McKinnon that'd be cool thanks
@Peter I'd love to see that video. Especially as a non-native English speaker. :D
I don't vlog but I'd imagine getting comfortable vlogging by yourself would be a good start.
Just do it and ignore what people think. It's not easy in the beginnig but you get over it
I am so glad you came up in my feed. I am so glad I took the time to watch you. The content you are making is awesome!
I fell for it. I was watching this thinking, whoa this lighting set up! Must be one of his earlier RUclips videos before he became Master McKinnon and then BAM 💥 perfect lighting 😂Great Video as usual.

I know this is old but thank you for this.. Lightning has always been an issue for me.
There's a reason why you're KING of all things, RUclips. Now we all know why. Great tutorial.
Who needs to pay for photography classes when we have P. Mac Academy here!
Dope! I would cut the time buy building the box first then spray painting it black and adding the aluminum after its built , and also paint the PVC pipes black for a cleaner look , over all great job !
Just so great details to learn. Thanks for sharing and Greetings from WW2HistoryHunter
Decided to create a cinematic lighting setup for less than $100. inspired by this, one of my first videos! Thanks for the content. So cool! Stay safe
congrats on growing on youtube. keep it up. !

I saw the first three seconds of this video and my brain was like "what the hell happened to Peter??"
Hands down undisputed King of the B Roll 🙏🏽👏🏾
2019 anyone? Thanks RUclips I actually needed help with my lighting set up 😂😂
Very interesting take on lighting! I was about to purchase the ring light and then saw a video about the reflection of the ring in the eyes (true or not?!). That video is one the best tutorial i have ever seen so far. Thank you Peter
looks absolutely disgusting, lol awesome
One of the most awesome reviews I have ever seen.Keep it up CHAMP
Nice to see some of your older stuff. You're way more 'approachable'. Appreciate that videos like this still have value.
I just brought a light setup today and it's crazy how much difference it likes, I haven't even added diffusers or gels or anything so it's going to look even better when I'm finished but the difference is crazy already
Mate that was a well presented functional lesson on lighting 101, no hype or bullshit. Nice work, the tip regarding the gels priceless
First video I ever saw of him, been with him ever since
Man this video is so underrated! I think the thumbnail scares people cause it kind of looks like a really high production value when the whole point was to make this a cheap and easy tutorial. perhaps you just could've had a side by side comparison of before and after the lights where turned on.

Other vids I watched over complicated the whole process.
Thanks
roughly two days out from the new year......Awesome stuff :)....cool to see how much Peter has grown in his videos... :)
I'm glad I found your channel. I could watch your vids 10 hrs straight.
Wonderful and informative content, Peter! You caused me to exact a solicitation to my local Home Depot on New Years Day....hey, their fault for being open!! Pete... you have come SO far. THANK You, for being you. Cheers
Looking this back in 2022 is somehow humbling ... just make me realize, that it needs baby steps to get far or big ... love this
Hi Peter! Thanks for your great work! Just wanted to say a camera move showing your perspective in this setup would've been really helpful! Cheers
I learned so much about lighting just from this one video! You really should have a TV show (my bad if you already have one). Thanks!
Nailed it, Peter - this is a must-see video for anyone doing Zoom who wants a professional look without the expense. Thank you.
PS: If you go to Ikea to buy a desk lamp, might was well pick up a Chinese paper lantern or two. Bigger is better imho, but I like big soft sources.
Thanks.
Watching your video's really give me the boost to become better a photography.Keep up the excellent work PM....
I guess this weekend, am watching all videos from previous years. And am gonna use this setup. Awesome videos. Thanks Pete.
It’s so weird seeing this in 2022. Woah, Peter! 😁👏🏻
I'm looking at your old videos, it's crazy how your quality went up so quickly! This video looked good but your newer videos are just wayyyy better.
Hey Pete loved your works !
Can you please make a video for the necessary equipments to start with photography.Basically the lens and flash and etc.
