Boom mic all the way. You are more natural and expressive with your hands when you don’t have a mic in your face. Your hands are such a crucial part of how you communicate with your audience. Talk with your hands, free them, don’t let them get distracted by where your boom mic is placed.
Been here all along too! Started as a pure Newby, - In 2016, start my RUclips channel on "how to become an actor in France"... - Launched my photography studio... (Niche: Actors Headshots) - Grew 13000 following... (Yes, doesn't seem amazing, but it's in a small niche, in France) - Had no time to work on it because I became a creative director in a film production... - Trained myself into coaching and Hypnosis... - Became a digital Nomad photographer & social media manager... - Now starting again from scratch, in English, making guided Hypnosis & Meditations for creative entrepreneurs & people with ADHD... Wow... And it all started here, I got the motivation, the drive and the tips, mainly thanks to Peter McKinnon! Very grateful for everything you've brought me, and us, and your phenomenal consistency in creativity and authenticity!
I like the mic not being in frame. Its the way you've always done it. The mic is just in the way and covers your mouth and possibly some natural face expressions.
Totally feel your space is a reflection of state of mind. Simple space to work with creative items all around yet not cluttered can be great for swapping things out every so often to keep creativity going, but limits clutter. If the space is to random and to full you will have a hard time focusing 100% - Great changes Peter! I dig it.
Thank You so much, You've been inspired me a lot since all those years, and finally I am gonna start my own channel in this very year. Thank You so much Peter for showing me to dream.
this is so generous of you, man, to share this stuff. I love it, I love you for it. I wonder if I am capable of such a generosity, just paying it forward! I hope , love and peace
Man, I love these types of videos. I remember the days back with your 1dX and Zoom H6, but the truth is that the gear doesn't matter nearly as much as your personality and the feeling of having a "virtual friend" in Canada.
I am glad that I'm back watching your videos. felt lost in the sauce and burnt out as a videographer. But watching your new videos gave me inspiration and filled my cup again. Thank you for being you Pete!! you are one of the greatest!!!
Simple is the best way to be productive when recording and you nailed it! I don't sandbag I use my backpacks that have gear in them....I just looks cool! Great setup Pete!
I always like to know more about your studio setup Peter. Don't stop making these videos and videos of filmmaking education even if you felt that they're repeated
I like the behind the scenes, but I like the scenes, too! Favorite mix of this is probably the Can-Am content from a few years back. Right when the R5/R6 were getting put through their first paces. Good stuff!
Perfect timing! My first man-crush RUclipsr (in a none creapy way 😅) are back with a video about the setup. Just about to redo my own setup. Great source of inspiration as always. Thank you Peter for all the love, knowledge and inspiration you share year in and year out. You inspire me to want to be better. Thank you
I love the set up and recently went to both a shotgun mic and a podcast arm and it's so nice to have both options. This would be the second thing I would have gotten AFTER a decent key light. Lighting is everything
I literally find myself just watching these videos immediately when they come out. Like I’m at work rn and I just put in my AirPods and started watching
On the mics, the SM7B has a warmth and closeness in its sound like we're chatting and you're sitting right across from me. The boom makes you sound placed in a room because it catches a bit more reverb. Different sounds for different scenarios 😊
No video you have ever created Pete is ever disappointing, there is always some inspiration to it and I love the cleaness Just Like MKBHD who hates fingerprints lol.. Love the Shure mic somehow sounds better more fuller and deep and intimate somehow, my opinion. Thanks for great vids all the time!
Love this set up! Dig the lighting and don’t mind the Shure mic in the frame, sounds awesome. Never thought about the pre-amp option! Thx for another great vid 🙌🏾
Definitely the boom for me. I much prefer the intimate feel that the ambient sound of the room brings. The Sure has a great sound quality but I like that extra room sound. 😁
Looking top-notch. I'm using the MixPre-6 II with the Shure SM7B, and it's a killer combo. The MixPre has awesome preamps, so actually, no need for the Cloud Lifter 😉
I have a pretty small space that needs to be modular, so that I can exist in it outside of shooting videos. Watching this makes me really want to recreate this entire setup on a moving platform, rug and all.
Pete, I prefer the sound you get when the mic is on camera, but I also like the variety. Just my humble opinion. (You asked, I answered.) Thanks for the tour. I'm starting my studio revamp too.
The boom mic definitely seems fitting for explanatory topics or scenarios fitting of a little more energy. The podcast mic is softer spoken and intimate potentially fitting of serious topics or quieter moments. Peter I need to look back through your videos to see if you might have reviewed it already but I would love to see a review of the new Sony A7Cr that Sony released last year I think. I've been considering getting it for use in landscape photography and astrophotography but have seen some mixed reviews with it upon my research! I know you've gone full Canon since a while ago so I'm uncertain if it would be available as a topic that you could cover but I'll keep a lookout in case you have/will! Much love!
Awesome video!!! Thought I should comment .. no one ever mentions the cloud lifter!! That is a very overlooked thing when talking about the SM7B. Well done!! In fact I think it's the first time I've heard anyone mention it! Kudos! And thanks for such amazing content! Love it all!!
I prefer the Shure... Sounds great in that room. You need to check out the OC White Gen2 Ultima low profile mic arms. We use them in all our studio builds.
Idk who else relates to this but Does anyone remember the early days with Peter where you just saw all this equipment and was like Dam I hope to one day have access and afford all this equipment just like him. Fast forward to a video like this today and your like dam Im here and past this point and yet . And we are still watching this man’s videos for inspiration and relatability 🔥🔥🔥 Peter has quite literally taught a generation of film makers. Inspired us to become entrepreneurs. Dive into this full time. So good to look back at that younger self and know you achieved the dream
I feel the boom-mic matches your energy better! Dont get me wrong, the senheiser sounds great but it feels more like a documentary done for nat-geo than bwhatsup Peter McKinnon welcome back to yet another video :)!
I think I'm following you for 5-6 years now and man, I love everything you put out! The passion you have for photography and the fact that you're such a gear nerd fires me up every time I watch a video of yours.
To be honest, in direct comparison I prefer the shure mic. Rewatching a vid with the boom mic, the sound as well is awesome. Both mics sound great, but side by side, the shure is just better. Or it’s just because I am used to that sort of sound. Was surprised seeing 2 times the 15-35 there, for my top down shots I really like a bigger zoom range, but I do shoot watches and there I have to get closer. Depending on the shot (wristroll, closeup dial,…). Happy start into The weekend to everyone who is reading this, cheers 😊🙏🏻
Love that video! Brought me young PM vibes all over again! Would be amazing if you guys could show us in a video how you make your videos from start to finish! Could even be a series?! Just sayin...
Man, amazing setup! I have one suggestion for lifting up your equipment though: VESA arms and poles. They are heavy-duty, highly movable, and steady af, since they are built to hold 10 kg+ monitors. You can easily detach, rearrange them, or transport them to another table. Say goodbye to the sandboxes.
Boom mic all the way. You are more natural and expressive with your hands when you don’t have a mic in your face. Your hands are such a crucial part of how you communicate with your audience. Talk with your hands, free them, don’t let them get distracted by where your boom mic is placed.
Been following for 7 years, please keep doing these ❤
ay YO ALIIII
You are awesome too ALI ❤

why do you want to see his mouth lol
Boom mic that you can’t see immediately brings you in and seems like your just listening to a friend. I enjoy that more 🤷♀️
me too!
I do too ! it's more like a conversation with a friend
Totally agree. The audio sounds better with the SM7B though so it’s difficult.
The Sure sounds better but I prefer no visible mic.
I do too!
I Love the boom mic better because it sounds more natural and the look feels more organic.
100%, podcasting arm mic just feels, looks, sounds entirely wrong for PM 😁
I love the natural look and sound from the shotgun mic…
Totally feel your space is a reflection of state of mind. i'm here for the sm7b asmr 😂 i think either way though honestly because of how you talk to the camera.
I like the sound of the podcast mic. Theres more of a warmth to it that compliment your visuals and colour tones.
this is so generous of you, man, to share this stuff. I love it, I love you for it. I wonder if I am capable of such a generosity, just paying it forward! I hope , love and peace
I love this. I think the boom mic makes sense for what you're doing in this video, but if I was doing a voiceover - I like the warmth of the Shure.
I love watching all videos you put out, your RUclips channel is part of my daily thing I do. Love your channel.
I adore it; there is always amazing stuff here.
Man, I love these types of videos. I remember the days back with your 1dX and Zoom H6, but the truth is that the gear doesn't matter nearly as much as your personality and the feeling of having a "virtual friend" in Canada.
You don't need a cloud lifter for the Shure SM7B. I've used it with many interfaces without it.
The Shure sounds silky-smooth Pete.... thanks for showing the difference with the Sennheiser. Keep doing what you're doing!
the last bit was the best part! Kinda grounded the whole thing
So in depth and well done! Cant wait to see how i mess it up somehow recreating it.
I am glad that I'm back watching your videos. felt lost in the sauce and burnt out as a videographer. But watching your new videos gave me inspiration and filled my cup again. Thank you for being you Pete!! you are one of the greatest!!!
I'm salivating over this setup 😂 I've been following for 5 years and have been LOVING what you do!!
Simple is the best way to be productive when recording and you nailed it! I don't sandbag I use my backpacks that have gear in them....I just looks cool! Great setup Pete!
The Sure mic just sounds so good. Plus you will find a rad creative way to use it.
I love this studio.. the amazing pictures around the walls are beautiful ✌️❤️🔥
I love gear that lasts a long time! Can vouch for the Sachtler tripod and manfrotto arm/clamps, and I love my R5 C!
Been following you since 2019/2020 and I'm not going anywhere. I've learned a lot from this channel and gotten some great ideas from it too.
I always like to know more about your studio setup Peter. Don't stop making these videos and videos of filmmaking education even if you felt that they're repeated
I enjoy hearing about stands, clamps and arms. Thanks for this one.
sm7 yes!
I like the behind the scenes, but I like the scenes, too! Favorite mix of this is probably the Can-Am content from a few years back. Right when the R5/R6 were getting put through their first paces. Good stuff!

I prefer listening to the boom mic. Thanks for all you do Peter!
This is rad! Thanks for sharing, Peter! You've been such an inspiration for my photography and videography journey.
I love the set up and recently went to both a shotgun mic and a podcast arm and it's so nice to have both options. This would be the second thing I would have gotten AFTER a decent key light. Lighting is everything
I literally find myself just watching these videos immediately when they come out. Like I’m at work rn and I just put in my AirPods and started watching
same
What do y'all do for work 😂
Me too!😂 Pete just draws you in, no matter how productive you want to be!
@@Lilbrotate a warehouse 😂 and I take photos.
@joeadrift8400 that sounds like the most suss job I've ever heard about
i still remember your cheap lighting setup video from 7 years ago. so happy to see your growth!
Great informative video Pete as always.. thanks for putting these out.. definitely would love to see the bts more.. much love from UG ❤👊

Legend! Love these videos man
Love the sound of the boom mic!
I think the bars and the style of your last studio have a special look ^^ i love it and i like also this minimal setup
Thanks for sharing the magic! Just ordered a Cloudlifter.
Studio goals 🙌🙌🙌
Love this set up! Dig the lighting and don’t mind the Shure mic in the frame, sounds awesome. Never thought about the pre-amp option! Thx for another great vid 🙌🏾
just when I think that I have a decent setup... Peter comes with this!!!! I NEED MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Definitely the boom for me. I much prefer the intimate feel that the ambient sound of the room brings. The Sure has a great sound quality but I like that extra room sound. 😁
2:17 ״ braided fabric cable because that’s cooler” this is why you are the best 😮💨
Wow awesome!!!!! 😎❤ Peter always nailed it ❤
I really like this compact single desk setup with c-stand, although I sometimes prefer mounting everything on ceiling as well.
Gorgeous. Having an office like that to go to would make going to work enjoyable. Good work!
Looking top-notch. I'm using the MixPre-6 II with the Shure SM7B, and it's a killer combo. The MixPre has awesome preamps, so actually, no need for the Cloud Lifter 😉
This set up fires me up to start growing mine, thanks peter!
You are such an inspiration for me, brother! Just love watching your videos 🤙🏼
Thanks for showing us your studio setup.
I have a pretty small space that needs to be modular, so that I can exist in it outside of shooting videos. Watching this makes me really want to recreate this entire setup on a moving platform, rug and all.
I like the vibe of the mic in frame
keep going bro love the two mics I actually do the same thing ... been here through all the haircuts !! very proud and motivated by you
Nice setup, I like the neon Canadian Beaver 🦫
Gotta say - I love the sound of the Shure mic. Totally get the boom mic - but my ears love that Shure sound!
Great setup man-i have a super compact home studio office for my channel so that small light box is defs something I will consider!
Pete, I prefer the sound you get when the mic is on camera, but I also like the variety. Just my humble opinion. (You asked, I answered.)

I feel the SM7B is great for the podcast or voice-over where the out of camera shotgun mic works great when you are doing talking head videos.
I always love these videos. The theology just gets me excited. More BTS is always welcome 🤘🏾
I prefer the Shure... Sounds great in that room. You need to check out the OC White Gen2 Ultima low profile mic arms. We use them in all our studio builds.
Audio from the sm7b but I love the look from the Shotgun. More clean & organic.
I like both mics. Both have their place
Ive seen so many studio shots of Peters over the past 7 years or so...enjoyed them all
This awesome! I’m currently in the process of moving and my wife and I are going to be figuring out how to set up my RUclips office 🙌🏽
Idk who else relates to this but Does anyone remember the early days with Peter where you just saw all this equipment and was like Dam I hope to one day have access and afford all this equipment just like him. Very cool. Peter is using the same background music I use on some of my videos.
Very cool.
The Shure sure sounds better as it evens things out. The boom mic comes out thinner, but you do gonna love the freeness of space.
Can’t believe how much of a difference that shure mic makes! 100% a fan. Much better IMO 👌🏽
I feel the boom-mic matches your energy better! Dont get me wrong, the senheiser sounds great but it feels more like a documentary done for nat-geo than bwhatsup Peter McKinnon welcome back to yet another video :)!
Fireeee!
More of how you do things…. Yes please!!!
I think I'm following you for 5-6 years now and man, I love everything you put out! The passion you have for photography and the fact that you're such a gear nerd fires me up every time I watch a video of yours.
I’m digging that light
Love the simplicity of this studio. Feels like you went Batman Year One!
Never been disappointed after all those years though. Amazing
Love it. Thanks for another great BTS share.
I like a Shure thing! Use that mic, I also use it for my videos and overdubs
It’s always great to see a talking head video from one of your favorite creators.
I need more of thiisss!!! Also, how about some DaVinci color grading tutorials? That would be nice too ❤
Love the vintage set up, and yes Matt Damon , for sure the arm microphone sounds deeper and podcast sounds. PM you are the DaVince of video 😮😅
Love the setup, I would love to setup a nice studio one day.
Gorgeous Pete! Keep it up with such good videos!
I've been here since the beginning bud, looking forward to 7 more!
Thank you Peter!

Shotgun for sure. I can hear just a bit of the room and it sounds like you’re actually talking to me.
Epic ending Pete 🤣🤣🤣
I am rewatching this because I wanted your boom mic setup! No mic in frame all the way 🥰
Love that video! Brought me young PM vibes all over again! Would be amazing if you guys could show us in a video how you make your videos from start to finish! Could even be a series?! Just sayin...
yess moreeee, behind the scenes
Man, amazing setup! I have one suggestion for lifting up your equipment though: VESA arms and poles. They are heavy-duty, highly movable, and steady af, since they are built to hold 10 kg+ monitors. You can easily detach, rearrange them, or transport them to another table. Say goodbye to the sandboxes.
Dang two videos in two days the more Peter the better
Four inches deep!
Such a well thought through setup. Not too much, nothing missing. Definitely needing this light!
