  • Today we attend my very first frag swap! It was a chill event with a small crowd so perfect for a first experience. We walked away with way more than I expected but spent a very reasonable $125. We will definitely be going to more in the future so stay tuned!
    We got all the corals dipped and introduced into my 125 gallon tank. The tank also got a much needed lighting upgrade! We explore the lights I ordered and get them setup on the tank! In the next few days I will be setting up a DIY dripper for kalkwasser as well as more water testing to perfect everything for these corals. Be sure to subscribe so you don't miss everything to come!

    There is another frag swap this Saturday about 3 hours away. 😅 If I go, what should I look for!? Throw me some of your favorite suggestions! 🔥

      Some of my favorites are, Leptoseris, branching cyphastrea, fungia plate, candy cane coral, and galaxea, providing you give it a bit of distance from other corals. They have long sweeper tentacles that can sting nearby corals.

    Long time reefer here. I don't recommend power strips under the tank. It's a very corrosive environment I've had two electrical fires from those strips. At the very least silicone the plugs and get plug inserts for the open outlets.

    Very true. I was thinking 4 foot. Like mine was perfect.

    When checking your parameters, your alkalinity is the number one most crucial

      Getting that number fixed in my recent video. Increasing by .5dKh/day until around 8.5. Looking good so far!

    Sweet! I was at this frag swap as well. And it was my first frag swap too! 😂. I liked that it was really laid back and not too busy. I was able to check out all the booths and was able to grab more than I thought I would.

      Awesome! Yeah definitely a good one to start with. I'll be on the lookout for more in this area. Especially with the lower turnout of this one, I hope all the sellers did okay.
      I think a cool video idea would be buying something from every seller at a swap.

    You may need some more phosphate on the water. My frog spawn was really pale for a few months but then I started dosing some phosphate and the color came back within a few days

    I’d raise them lights to 15-17” off the water get you more spread. LEDs are more powerful then you think… nice tank I subbed 🎉

      I'll give that a go, thanks CJ!

    Yes, lighting is arguably the second most difficult thing to get right with sensitive stony corals; second only to water flow.
    Corals are very basic colony animals, with no circulatory system, and they maintain a photosynthetic symbiotic algae within them; making light and flow the hardest things to dial in. It's an up-hill learning curve, for all of us. But, you're on the right track.
    Part of that learning experience is that you have multiple family's of coral... Not even genus or species (and that's not counting the Nem). Meaning keeping them can be as different as keeping a cat and dog. Some will love high light, others won't. Some will really love high water flow (some SPS will Need high flow), others won't. Navigating those differences and learning coral species preference is also a normal up hill climb. You will get through it Sir, and you are not alone. Watch them closely, observe them every day, test often, and make changes slowly. Welcome to reefing.
    And if you loose some of those SPS corals (cause they look pretty stressed). Don't worry, we all do at the start. Think of them like plant cuttings. It sucks to loose a plant cutting, but the mother plant is still alive. So too for stony coral frags. Stabilize your tank conditions, work out the kinks in your coral receiving process (like dipping), and dial in your lights & pumps. Then try them again.
    Also, kudos on dipping your first coral purchase. Most don't. You're doing your homework, which is what it takes to keep stony corals. And lastly, that "Blasto" at 17:02 is a Orange Rhodactis mushroom; the one at 17:10 is the Blastomussa. Don't worry, you'll learn them all eventually. Just keep saying you're new, and we'll keep helping :)

      I'm beyond grateful for that incredibly helpful and encouraging response. This has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember and it's starting out just as interesting and challenging as I imagined. But I'm 1000% dedicated to this hobby as I always have been and will be doing everything I can to insure success.
      I'm also glad you cleared up the Blastomussa/Mushroom confusion. Brittany had been telling me for days I had it wrong 😅, she was happy to hear she was right.
      This will definitely end up as the pinned comment,
      Thank you again! 🙏

    For the price that you paid with a little more research. You would have found the best light for your price range. I have 2 of them, they are absolutely amazing, especially if you get the actual controller for them.....nicrew 150

      I had looked into those. I think they probably would have been good on my tank but I was concerned about the spread over 6 feet with just 2 of them. I will definitely get those sometime in the future to check out though! And a controller would be nice 👌

    I love that anemone 😍

  • @aaronfitz2892
    @aaronfitz2892 9 месяцев назад

    another long-time reefer going forward i wouldn't recommend dipping an anemone only because they don't really get pests and another thing is there is a chance the dip can kill it.

    • @Colton_Lee
      @Colton_Lee  9 месяцев назад

      Definitely agree. Someone else mentioned the same thing and after the fact looked into it more. I wish the manufacturer would put a notice on the label, though it is on us (me) to do the research and know what we're (I'm) doing.

    Dont dip anemones!

    • @Colton_Lee
      @Colton_Lee  9 месяцев назад +1

      Completely my fault. If the bottle hadn't specifically said it was safe for anemones, I would have made sure It was the right way to do it. Now I know it's not necessary and can even harm them with some dips. Just QT for 48 hours if you're worried about the free swimming stage of Ick and velvet, that's what I learned since then.
