i straight up watered and took care of a succulent for 6 months when i was in college before i realized it was plastic
omg😅😂😅
What?! Hahaha
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I HAVE NOT laughed that much out loud in such a long time! Thanks for that Fiona.
😂🤣🤣
I had a few plants and then once i started successfully keeping them alive it’s like it was all of a sudden an obsession and i started buying so many plants lol
Saaaame 😬
I call it lockdown induced plant obsession :D
It’s an addiction that you can’t control. A good one tho
Same! At least the air in our homes is ✨fresh✨
@@aislingd1806 super duper fresh!
During my Army barracks days, I was house sitting for a friend in exchange for taking care of his 13 plants. He was warned that I had no clue. I over-watered each one and they all got a white fungus and eventually died. Afterward, he taught me how to care for plants. Then, we got married. And, for 32 years, my husband and Ihave been giving these 13 plants their well deserved honorary mentiion every time we tell our Love story 💞
Omg this is such a cute story 🥺
Wow. A love story like never before
wow that is SO incredibly wholesome, I hope you and your husband and your plant babies are thriving. Such a beautiful story I had to share it with my mom lol
This is so damn cute!
stfu bc that was the cutest story i have ever seen omg
...and for laughing: in my young days I planted an onion upside down by mistake 😂 but it came up the right way ...that onion was a lot smarter than me 😂
Lol. It can happen. Especially if you are planting a lot. Typically a plant will just correct it's growth. Some cant, but those are usually very finicky species from the get go.
Interesting. I've been 'into' plants since the early 1970s - with my second oldest (circa 1973) still with me - with kids and grandkids around (now I throw out the trimmings - 'dumb cane' will take over the world, if you feel the need to keep every trimming!). So I figured I couldn't learn much from yet another house plant video coming into my suggested list; I figured wrong. With so many plants in the background, I figured you knew your stuff - so I listened on. Excellent video! A lot of good tidbits. :-) You've inspired me to delve into new varieties (quarantining first :-). Only recently began putting plants in more than one room. The thought of lugging water all over house on watering day (ok, your suggestion about stopping a watering 'day' has merit) tired me out just thinking about it. But it really wasn't so bad and having greenery in most rooms has encouraged keeping a minimalist, tidy environment. Double bonus!
🤪🤪🤣🤣🤣
Hahaha that's hilarious!
Good Ol' geotropism ☺️
Id say my biggest mistakes were repotting into containers way to big for my plants which lead to root rot and then a slow painful death. loving them too much :(
Yesssssss been there!!!!
I did that with my first plant! It was heartbreaking
Yes I've done that too many times...
know your pain D:
so if the roots are growing out of the plastic, should I reppot it or leave it that way?
I accidentally watered one of my plants with vodka. This was during my first year at university when we weren't supposed to have alcohol in the dorms. I had filled a water bottle with vodka to be sneaky, and ended up fooling myself
Did the plant die?!
Michelle Gregory Just caused it to hang over...
@@michellegregory1717 I...I didn't mean to 😭
But yes
My best friend accidentally did this to a fish... :(
My mom used to own a plant shop and I was never interested in plants solely because when I was a kid I always had to go to work with her to the shop😭 but now that I’m older I’m so much more appreciative of plants that I started my own collection. Funny how life works
Similar! My mum always had sooo many plants, I'd find it annoying and would ask not to put any plants in my room. Now! My flat is covered in plants 😂
Same. My mom has so many plants in her house and now here I am watching RUclips videos on them 😭
Ahh i needed this as i got into houseplants over the pandemic and now have 30+ babies
Edit: since this got sm likes i made like 2 plant videos got a new one coming ! Would appreciate if ppl checked it out.
Hooray for expanding your plant family 🌱
@@RachelAust haha thank u ! I deffo got to make a updated vide on my plant babies. & thank the plant community.
Me too the over the pandemic..plus my mom has a green thumb so I get it from her as well
Love your plant collection @Rachel Aust
How to grow monstera with lustrous leaves?
I love how she informative she is and she’s so calming like her voice and her aesthetic all the shots of the plants
I don't know why but one day I came to this idea to sprinkle cinnamon over my soil bc of the fungus gnats and yes here we are it works !
did you use any kind of cinnamon? she said that she uses ceylon cinnamon but mine just says organic ground cinnamon
I wish I new that before changing the soil
Omg I didnt know that, Ive had such a problem
Britany Kroner Not sure if you’ve tried yet but fwiw the cinnamon I used only said organic and it worked!
It’s works temporarily but the gnats start to make larva over that over time I tried it with my infestation and didn’t work so great
Overwatered a cactus. Funny story of my sister, she was carefully taking care of her cactus, because it had a flower. Then I came round and saw it was one of the stick on flowers 😂
My family got fooled by a glued on flower as well lmao
Lmaooo, that’s hilarious because it happen to me
It took me like 4/5 months to realize the flower was glued on the cactus 😭😂
Same!
My mum keeps asking me if the flowers on my cactus are fake, got it for my birthday about a year ago. Keep telling her the flowers close a bit sometimes and one gets a little pale so has to be real. I thought for sure they would fall off, they so cute!
I definitely learned something new! Like, the plants that are growing new leaves need more water.
I'm so glad I could teach you something! ☺️🌱
Me too I'm happy to know about this 👍
This is an eye opener ❤️
Yes, I've never heard that before, so I'm so glad this video was in my suggestion box. I'm a new subscriber as well Merry Christmas everyone.
@@donnaallen2207 thank you for being here and welcome!! 🥰
I had learned that hydrogen peroxide helps fight root rot. I started mixing what I thought was hydrogen peroxide in with the water. It was a small amount, but I used it every time. Suddenly my plants started dying. I stopped using it and a couple months later I figured out that I was using isopropyl alcohol instead. I lost about 4 plants to this. I still very embarrassed.
NOOO PLS
I was having a really scattered day trying to multitask and I to this day can’t figure how I made this mistake but I poured a cup of bleach meant for the toilet in my gigantic spider plant and the cup of water in the toilet. That it ever recovered amazed me. It took a good seven month just to stop struggling. So don’t feel too bad!!!
How much did you add into the water? i made the mistake of overwatering my dracaena and she’s not looking so good :/
Me: already knows how to care for my plants
Me again: still watches this video
Lol, same
Then can I use just regular McCormick ground cinnamon for fungus gnats? Or do I have to use the one she mentioned?
@@Gee5425 Cinnamon powder is pretty effective.
@@elyraedesigns5137 thank you! I'll try it out. I noticed my monstera has fungus gnats when I watered it last week. My sister in law told me to get mosquito bites, but I can't find them anywhere.
haha Same!
This isn't about me, but my Step Dad's Mother thought cacti didn't need to be watered at all. So she had all these little cacti around her house that were like petrified brown rocks in the shape of a cactus. My Step Dad was like Mom you need to water these and she's like "I thought they got their water from the air and you never needed to water them!"
Awwww 😂😂😂
Wtf
I have a cactus I haven't watered in like 5 years and the little guys still going
@@Jordan-db2og is it real? 😂
@@Jordan-db2og probably plastic
When I first started getting into propogating my plants I legit thought you just clip the leaves and stuck them in water until they root so I had a bunch of mason jars with leaves in them all around my house...didnt find out about the whole node thing until the leaves died lmao
Wait this is what I need to know... What is the node thing??? Please explain. I want to make my plant grow more, where do I cut it?
@@lunasegarra8346 thank you! I finally got it
I read that alcohol killed aphids so I thought “hey my perfume has alcohol” then proceeded to murder my string of pears. We have learned. Adapted, blossomed??? Lol
I had a mite issue and yeah... did the same as a kid. T_T
I came here for beginner advice. Stayed because of your energy and you’re so gorgeous! Thanks for the video! 💗
Agreed! Beginner that's me! Stayed because of the energy! 🧘🏾♀️
My boss had an orchid that looked.. dead and I was determined to revive it. It was in orchid mix and all the leaves were yellow. I forgot about it for a few months and somehow it bloomed. I still have it, every time I lightly mist it, it jumps out of the pot, so I just took out the bark and it chills in the pot alone, with mist once or twice a week and it has buds on it!!!!
Damn I legit just threw away my dead orchids 💀
Omg u look exactly like a plant yourself!! Clay pot hair and green eyes 😳😍‼️
One of my worst mistakes has been throwing out my “dead” Venus fly traps in winter. Venus fly traps go dormant in winter and me being less experienced and having not done enough research thought they were dead... now over a year later I found out about their dormancy haha. (luckily I now have a very happy and healthy Venus!)
Done it too
@@ephraimbrener9143 thank goodness I'm not alone ✌️😭
Shit, I done just realized I did this a few weeks ago and now I greatly regret it. 🤦🏼♀️😭
The hairpin hack is actually a really great idea, thanks! Been wondering how in the world to get my trailing plants to look thicker/fuller.
I didn’t understand what she did, could you explain?
@@MissSunshineDia I'm no expert, by any means. However, I believe: if your plant is long & stringy, but you'd like it fuller & less stringy, place part of the stringy you'd like less of back in the dirt. Hold it down gently with an open hair pin. Stand back from it to ensure how it'll look once buried. Check the pin often to be sure it's not rising above the dirt level. Once rooted & hearty, remove the pin. Enjoy!
Ugh plants make peoples house looks so dreamy💕
Living art 🪴💕
As a kid I used to have a cactus. I decided to show it my love through watering it every single day.. until a yellowy long mushroom grew next to it and the cactus was falling apart. Now I understand the meaning of „spoiled rotten“
I laughed out loud 😂 Thanks for sharing!
This is so serendipitous!! I'm trying to grow my indoor jungle, especially the monstera adansonii, and it's not easy in Northern Italy!
When I was a kid (around 5 yo), I got a small cactus that was precious to me. I read him poems etc. and one day, I decided I'll repot him into some sand because I thought that's what cactuses naturally grow from (I come from central Europe so I haven't seen a wild cactus by then - only in cartoons). Well, it died... 😔
I’m sorry for your loss 😔
Reading poetry to a cactus is one of the sweetest things I’ve ever heard. I can just picture it. 💜
@@urbanpoodle i thought the same thing 🥺
That is how we learned as kids... before google 😁🤷🏻♀️
You can plant it in Sand. Not optimal but Not too Bad either. So it died bc of an other reason.
you must have amazing air in your house holy crap
the worst mistake i ever made when i was just starting out my plant collection: i took a glass cup from my bedside table that was still half full from the night before to give one of my plant babies in my room some extra watering .... well she got sprite because i'm stupid and forgot it wasn't water 😂
I left my beautiful big peace Lily on the floor and my house mates rabbit jumped into the pot and ate the whole thing! 😱🐰
Both survived 🤣
That is a lucky rabbit
Oh no!! I keep killing my water lily somehow ... no one to blame 🤷🏻♀️😆
I see I click I like I watch I comment I smile I plant 🌱🌵🌿☘️🌾
Your plants are so beautiful. Thanks for the tip about the white oil.
You’re encouraging me to fill in my house with plants!
7 minutes or so into this video I realised I'd not listened to a word you had said from being hypnotised by your eyes. Really informative for me thank you!
I kept insisting that I could keep a plant alive without drainage holes in the pot. Took forever for me to learn that no matter how little I watered, it would pool up and cause root rot. Recently wised up to it and my plants are much happier for it! Definitely want to start mixing in perlite and some other stuff!
Damn I’m still in denial
Hi again Rachel!! I've been into indoor plant care since 2012 and I'm still learning lol, thank you for sharing!! Your plants are BEAUTIFUL!!💖🌱🙏🏼
LOVE! The blog post is awesome to look at too. I honestly have your blog post, "Tips for Reducing Waste in Your Kitchen" up on one of my tabs currently! I'm making a transition into buying more in bulk and replacing items when they run out with more sustainable options. And that blog post is very informative and so is this one! Thank you for pairing the video and blog posts!
I think we would always love to see more videos of you just caring for your plants. From mixing your own soil, to fertilizer to compost. We just enjoy your relaxing videos either way!
I actually will put one of your videos on in the morning before I go to work bc I feel so relaxed and positive. Thanks for the vibes, gf!
xoxo
We were going through a winter storm. I was worried about my plant getting too cold and freezing, so I brought it upstairs and sat it down by the fireplace to keep it warm. I accidentally singed a leaf.
Great tips, Thankyou! I’ve just started propagating recently, with some devils ivy and cactus. So many more little green babies to add to my collection 🌿x
SO many tips in here so grateful for this video, also the amount of times I've thought all my pants have to be watered the same amount and when I never used bamboo sticks to support the plant in the early days is so embarrassing
quarantining new plants SO SO TRUE i learned that the hard way. Fungus gnats INFESTED all my plants from one i brought home from a big box store
Thank you RUclips for the recommendation.
I am enamored!
I need to try that hairpin trick TONIGHT! I have so many pothos that need this!
I really like your plant videos. I’m still learning and yes I’ve killed a few plants already. My mistake was just watering plants to keep on a schedule but not checking the soil 🤦♀️ first. I have taken on a lot of new plants since last year and I’m quite enjoying it.
Great tips! I love succulents but still find these tips very helpful. Gardening is such a great hobby.
Oh my gosh, that Monstera in the background is the most beautiful I have ever seen!
I’m so excited to try the hairpin idea to make my pothos/philodendron thicker! Honestly have no idea how I haven’t thought of it before
You’re so calming and this was awesome thank you!
Thank you for all the helpful plant tips. I think cleaning my plant's leaves is something that I definitely need to get on top of. Also, I wanted to mention that I love the style of your home. It looks so beautiful with all the greenery. I love the polka dot accent wall that you have in your sunroom.
Answering your question near the end of the video, the dumbest thing that I have done with one of my plants is transplant cuttings that I received in the mail from the pot they came in into a larger pot right away. I learned that the cuttings did not have a large root system so transplanting them into a larger pot kept them too wet. I also learned that breaking the cuttings apart to repot them severely stressed the plant out, causing many of the cuttings to rot off and die.
not me immediately repotting my online orders that i totally planted with moss still intact
crisis adverted phew
This was so helpful! I’ve had a pothos and a diefenbachia for about four years now and though they’ve hung on, they look so sad and unhealthy. I’m trying to actually learn how to care for plants now, so I can revive them and work on collecting more and building a big (happy) plant family!
Have you tried giving them a nitrogen boost? I use used coffee grounds in my non-flowering/non-fruit producing plants - a tablespoon mixed in with the top layer of soil every month seems to do the trick quite well.
When you said "this video is for you" I was like 🙋♀️. I'm a fairly new plant mum with five indoor plants but they are all thriving and I love them! Thank you for these great tips. We are moving into a new, bigger house and I can't wait to buy more and even start propagating a few in water. Loving your videos 🌱
Love your vids!! You have a calming effect voice!! I bought a big Alocasia plant from a nursery. Spider mites took over. I lost so many leaves so I kicked it out on the patio. It’s still thriving outside. Such a beautiful plant but the spider mites is the most aggravating pest to deal with.
NEEDED this!!! trying to become a better plant mom during the winter in nyc ah
That's exciting Jen! 🙂
@@awildandsimplelife thank you!! i'm trying LOL
@Jen Lauren Are you into slow and simple living? I also share my videos about slow and simple living in Australia. You can check them out on my channel. 🙂
I would bottom water one of my moms exotic angel plants, after a few weeks we noticed it dying. The pot it was in came with a built in saucer. The only thing getting wet was the bottom of the pot.
Thank you so much! I just got 5 house plants and definitely did a few things wrong. Ordered a couple items to make adjustments so you probably saved all 5 of them. ♥️
Never watched one of your videos, this one was just recommended to me. Just want to say, I LOVE your tattoos! It's amazing how nice the sleeves continue over your hand. And thanks for the video, it was helpful👍🏻
Planted flowers in a pot with no drainage holes and was surprised pikachu face when they got root rot. Haven’t made that mistake since.
I moved my Money Tree when decorating for Christmas and it got SO upset!!!! I don’t know if this is funny;) I am so happy to know now that Money Trees do not like to be moved!
money trees can be such drama queens! i moved mine to the other side of my window (it was on the left of the window, and i moved it to the right. the light was even on both sides.) and some of her leaves turned yellow and drooped! i freaked out completely and tried drying her out, then putting a humidifier near her, and after none of that worked, i moved her back to where she was and about 4 days later, her leaves perked up and started getting greener. it was insane.
Your plants are simply gorgeous. Mine are thriving too. I found feeding them orchid liquid fertilizer makes them luschier and greener. Most of mine are propergated and in semi hydroponic. No watering issues. This helps with the humidity too.
Enjoy the festive season🙋♀️💐
The last one sounds like something I would've done. I've been collecting succulents for a few years now and have a few cactus & different types of bamboos, and my one Bird of Paradise. About a month ago I got 3 Monstera cuttings (as 1 plant) and two other plants from a "mini monstera/tetra" cutting. It's so exciting to see all the babies come out. Such fast growers... I love it! Beautiful plants btw. Absolutely gorgeous. Love tropical plants and can see myself collecting a few in the coming year. Might be my new obsession lol 🥰
Sooooo adorable! And, the plants, too! Thank you for great plant advice!💚💚💚

That demonstration of the drainage was so helpful!
Thanks for the tips! This is so helpful especially to plant lovers. 🌱🌱🌿
Hello from New Zealand Rachel. I'm a plant addict and have fortunately just discovered your channel - I'm sure I can learn a lot from you as your plants are so beautiful and healthy. Thank you.
Where did you get that pool-like surface that you use for repotting? I need something like that and I have no idea how to google it.
Amazon has them, it's a repotting mat!
Thank you so much for this awesome information! It's exactly what I needed, and it was so simply put and concise! 🥰
And please, do you remember where you got that white dress from? 😍
Great video a little note to you I’ve been around long time life never gives us all our lesson at the same time or right on time..but thankfully if we pay attention they will come ..recognizing them is the key as well... your plants look well loved ...I love your placement as well..I ve made plant mistake also..learned if them...I also read all I can on the subject....thank you for sharing...have a healthy Christmas 🎄
Happy birthday Rachel!🎂 Hope you have a wonderful day!!😎
My plant mistake in the beginning of my plant journey was not managing pests (like, at all). I had a bad outbreak of scale on my japonica's and I just let them die 😭
Noooooo 😭😭😭 that’s so unfortunate
me too 😓 i know better now. i let my majesty palm die 🥲
It’s a struggle to tackle pests sometimes for sure! But worth it and very rewarding!
I fought mealy bugs in my succulents for so long oh my gosh. I got some cool little Jade plant and didn’t really think about quarantining because I had a small collection anyways. Soon all of my babies had what I *thought* was mold. I eventually just threw that jade out because every time it looked better and was doing good for a while, I would put it back and it would have another outbreak. Still can’t bring myself to get another Jade.
Perfect timing! Thank you for this video!
It's about to be winter over here and some of my newer plants are suffering. I know nothing about humidity ahhh!
Hopefully these tips will help 🌱
Love your video. I look for plant tips daily and this is my first time viewing yours. It’s funny how a couple of plants 10 years ago grew into multiple plants in every room of my house and ever window sill covered. My collection is not as huge as yours, but that’s my log term goal. The best thing about a huge indoor plant collection is the exercise you get watering every plant in the house.
I hit send by mistake before proofreading. Sorry for the typos but thanks again for the tips. ☺️
Just started caring for plants. Thanks for the video !
Such great tips! Thank you!!
How do you personally dilute neem oil for wiping the leaves?
I love all of your plants, it’s like your living in a garden. I absolutely love that.
No matter what your videos about i enjoy them! Looking forward to your next entertaining video! 😎😁
What an amazing video and valuable advice! Absolutely love all your videos Rachel! ♥
Thank you so much for being here 🥰
YES! no plant likes low light! given the chance, theyd like more light and theyd grow more
WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR OUTFIT?!?! I loveeeee
Nice to meet another plant lover. Thanks for sharing. Happy holiday🎄
Thank you for this! Super helpful information. 🌱🌿
I was told to repot my plants and I thought that meant taking the containers they came in and putting them in a bigger pot. Not removing them first, not putting them in soil. Just literally putting the container in another pot 😂
Thank you for this video. I am new to indoor plants and am motivated to continue with these new pointers.
Also! The dress you are wearing in the video @13:00 is stunning. What is the brand?
This is my first video I’ve seen by you, just came across it. I loved all these tips you’ve given! Thank you. I will be a subscriber now!!! 😘
I love this vid 😍 I’ve not long started. In July I asked for plants for my birthday. I received an peace Lily. Within a month I had almost killed it. I’ve managed to bring it back to life and it’s now stunning, centre stage in my loungeroom. I’ve just purchased this past weekend 2 x baby monsteria & I’m looking forward to growing these 2 into big plants and enjoy. I am definitely wanting to grow and have more in my living space but for me, slow and steady wins the race
That's it, expanding slow and steady! So great to hear you were able to bring your peace lily back to life ✨

I almost killed a beautiful fern because I never noticed a beautiful pot cover was lined with so much plastic bag material (?) it prohibited any evaporation from inside pot 😅 I changed it, dried it out in a bathroom (moisture in air & drying out at the same time, it works nice for overwatered ferns) and now it had risen from the ashes 🙌🏻

I had little flies in my plants and thus started treating them with neem oil and these yellow stickers you hang on the plants. One of my smaller dragon trees ended up getting stuck on the yellow sticker sheet from the plant next to it, but I didn’t see that. So when I went to pick up the little tree (his name’s fred btw), I ripped off his biggest and most beautiful branch. ... ended up putting it in water and now he has a son, but oh my, what a moment...

My son one day decided to pluck my zz plant like a chicken. Omg I was so mad. But now it’s thriving.
my kitten chewed on my Maranta and my fiance knocked it over... twice... it didn't live. I have 2 propagations from it but I left them in water for too long so now I'm hoping they survive the transition to soil
