Just want to throw it out there, but repotting into a larger pot isn’t always the answer. You have no idea what the roots of these plants look like or how recently I moved them up a pot size & it may seem like “the quick fix” but without seeing the roots, you have literally no way of knowing that’s the problem. Idk why some of you are sooo upset because I just don’t enjoy these plants as much as I enjoy others 😂

No one can tell you how to feel about your plants. You feel what you feel and let them feel what they feel, and don't give them anymore airtime.

I can’t post pictures of my plants but I own two different species of Alocasias and they are HUGE right now. If they lose leaves when new ones come out is because the roots of the plant don’t have enough energy to keep all the leaves, so here’s a few advices that have worked put for me:
    - bigger clay pot. That’s the main thing you need to do if you want your plants to keep going. Plastic pots have to be discarded as soon as possible, and the bigger the pot, the bigger the roots will grow. Right now, the roots of your alocasia don’t have enough space to provide the plant with all the energy it needs.
-Avoid direct sunlight. They need a lot of light but a sun rays cannot touch the leaves or they’ll burn (maybe in winter it’s ok, but only then)
-A LOT of water. Like a lot. These plants grow inthe depths of the rainforest, next to rivers, therefore, you can spray water on their leaves and the soil needs to be moist all the time but DRAIN THE EXTRA WATER FIRST.
What I normally do is wait until the surface of the soil is dry and the I take the plant to the shower and water it for like 2-3min non-stop, and then, before returning it to it’s place, wait for all the the extra water to drain through the draining holes of the pot.
I’ve been doing this since last spring and my alocasias have never been thriving so much, I use a bit of fertilizer on them every now and then but I don’t think it’s necesdary unless the plant is yellowing a lot or the leaves are too weak.
    Good luck!!!

In my experience, all of my plants that kill off leaves eventually stop. I’ve always assumed they did it as they adapted to my space. Now that my Frydek is all leaves into produced in my home, it no longer drops leaves when it gets new ones. Hang in there!
As far as plants I regret, I regret a lot of the “filler” plants I purchased when I first got into houseplants. Like lost of us, I bought a lot of plants really fast and very quickly ran out of room. Now I’m fighting for prime real estate in my house for my more expensive, more loved plants.

I managed to stop the stingray dropping leaves by hosting it up lol and the polly I tried to do the same yesterday actually, so the bent leave is straight. But today the second older leave from the polly started bending!
Both plants have new leaves coming and I use fish tank water to water my plants so they should have enough nutrients.
I thought it was a light issue as my problems began in winter.

That is so accurate either have that or have two of those so you have four leaves or six if you have three so I had that happen where one of them kind of outgrew the other and they couldn’t balance each other out if you notice in time lapse is the plant needs to find balance in the bigger the area around it the more it can balance itself else it will need to drop smth so don’t use any supports on them and give them as much space as they want to band and this way you can control it I

Remember that your gloriosum is a crawling plant. It should be in a long rectangular pot. All the leaves, usually 3, are at the leading end of the plant, as it crawls along it loses the older leaves and the “stem” on top of the soil will be bare. To make it more bushy you can cut the bare stems into sections and leave them in the pot. These pieces should eventually produce their own leaves.

@@lynnetteb9780 if the plant looks too big for the container, just take it out and check the roots. Some plants actually like to snuggle their roots like pothos scindapsus, schlumbergera. So don't repot too early. Some plants you do every year, some every 2 years. Don't make my mistake though, by going to put them in a way larger container than the one they are in. I thought, lots of space, lots of growth....but the roots are too small to use al the soil and the water so they're going to rot.......good luck!!

@@cyclewithjb mine get direct sunlight around noon and indirect sunlight after that, maybe you water them too much? Mine only shed leaves when I overwater them (also check the tips of the leavs a little while after watering them, they usually form a few water drops, this means it was a little bit too much water so they release the water they dont need). Another thing could be that it need to be repotted! check the bottom of the nursery pot

PSA to anyone struggling with alocasia (and the frydek in the video). I've found they can sustain additional leaves when in a larger pot and higher light. You can achieve a full less leggy plant, with the additional root space they'll be more likely to throw out additional stems and growths.

I was thinking the same. The green on those leaves were mottled. The green should be consistant in color. I know most people with house plants water at half strength but maybe bottom watering/feeding should be done separately. Personally for hanging baskets I spray the fertilizer over the leaves. I dont leave it to chance that the fertilizer will get to where it needs to get from a saucer beneath the plant

Idk if this is still an issue for you a year later but I’ve grown orchids for 4 years. The key is fertilizer. That’s it. Very simple. They love fertilizer and if you feed them well in the spring you should get reblooms in the summer. Or it might pop a new leaf summer and bloom in autumn. An orchid needs two leaves above its last flower spike to grow a new spike. Otherwise it makes a leaf. So if you don’t water consistently or feed consistently it won’t put out a new leaf and during warmer months it uses its resources on leaves first.

This was fun to watch! Honestly with tropical plants like philodendron, epipremnum, pothos, alocasia, it’s best to mimic their natural setting as much as possible! So very good draining(the ground they grow in usually has a thick layer of decaying leaves), rich damp soil, a healthy amount of sunlight even though they will tolerate low light, and if they climb, give them something to climb on and they’ll love you forever!! I hope this helps! Your plants are beautiful

I'm sure someone has already said this, but the bulb based plants that are abandoning a single leaf when a new one comes out are in a holding pattern. The bulb will only support what it thinks it can keep alive via its current resources. Size up the pot a lot, tons of fresh nutrition, and you'll see over time as the bulb gets used to a new set of resources it will start to actively support multiple leaves. After that, it it's still getting really solid feeding, every subsequent leaf will be larger and larger. :)

Alocasias typically can only support 3 main leaves at a time. Once a new one starts to grow it is no longer able to support the oldest leaf and stops allocating resources towards it. This is typical for a lot of species in the Alocasia family. Hope this helps :)

One of the workers at the nursery assured me it was just sunburn, so I trusted him and paid $40 for the plant thinking I was getting a major deal. Alas, it is one of my greatest regrets in a plant, because the spots were indeed a fungal infection caused by root rot. I generally have a rule, if I find it in person and I feel a "connection", and I absolutely love their leaves and what they're doing: then I buy it. I try so hard not to get it just because I think I'll never see it again. I was buying plants EVERYTIME I went to the store, it was becoming insanely crowded. So I had to make myself stop doing that. But there's not get many, maybe only a couple (out of the hundreds) that I really regret buying. I've got a pretty good bond with all my plants. I was growing my big elephant ears in my kitchen over the winter (we get harsh winters here) and they were doing sooo great for so long, then right before spring, they started doing what your other one was doing: one leaf will grow, and another dies. It gets really really frustrating, so I'm with you on that.

2019 was my Unicorn plant search year, I spent close to $1000 ordering from online nurseries, not to mention dozens of hours of wasted time running around to different nurseries and big box stores looking for those magical Unicorn plants that never appeared. 2020 is a different story, no more plant searches, dealing with the plants that I still have from last years frantic searches and online purchases that did nothing but run up my credit card. Also, I took in a feral mommy cat and her 2 week old kittens that she entrusted me with by bringing them up on my deck and proudly presenting them to me, I am now the proud mommy to 4 cats, cats and a lot of plants don't mix well when they want the windowsill and sunlight.....the cats win.. :D I've saved a lot of money not buying plants this year, good thing, kitty litter and cat food take preference.

I definitely regret buying a croton (it died very quickly rip), and my ficus audrey! We just don’t get along no matter how much love I give her

The compactas tend to get pests really easily. I love had some for a long time that suddenly started to die and after I few days I’ve as able to identify an aphid infestation. Check for mites and use some neem oil if you find any!

I agree about the light for the Alocasia. I don't allow mine to dry out completely its more like 5 to 6 inches down (its in a 10 in pot). Mine has 10 leaves but it needs a TON of light! Like 10 to 14 hours of high bright light. Direct or indirect I don't think is the issue, it the amount and it needs to be bright.

I agee with some of the others. Most of those leggy two leaf plants just need bigger pots

I also have lots of plants and I have lots of problems with my Hindu rope plant only have one branch left hoping it will live and grow extra branches. I also decided that when plant is dying will try to save it and if I see nothing is successful I just chuck it out.
My favourite plant it’s my water melon plant. Love it.
