Do you work from home and therefore get to enjoy your plants all day every day? What initially interested you in plants? What do you like to do when you’re not “planting”? Thank you. I’m currently nursing back my black velvet and my silver dragon that both took a nosedive when I went away on a family trip! I pulled out my heat pad for seed starting and gave them some makeshift humidity domes and it’s really made a big difference but they’re definitely still in the danger zone! Sending good vibes too all of the sad alocasias in this community 💚

I love Alocasias! I also have 6 but it’s the Polly, black velvet, Frydek, dragon scale, ninja & silver dragon. Surprisingly the black velvet grows the fastest for me. Under grow lights & 45-60% humidity 🥴 temperature at 65°-79° 😄
Great video! ❤ Would love to see an update on them in a few months!

I've found Alocasia very temperamental in soil substrate, but do very, very well in semi hydro. When my Tigrina took a nosedive, I decided I had nothing to lose by converting it to 'pon' at that point. It acclimatised very quickly and started to thrive. Due to that I converted my Dragon Scale which did the same. I need to convert my Bambino, but I hate the chore of removing all the soil from the roots, so I've been putting it off 😂 I tend to buy corms now, so I can skip soil removal from the plant and just grow them from scratch. I root them in pon and then there is no transition from rooting to planting

I gave up on Alocasia due to their deva water needs and the fact that they are spider mite magnets. (my Polly infested every plant I owned) There is one that I would like to try if I ever find one in my area: silver dragon scale. I will probably get my heart broken, but I would like to try one.

I need help identifying a plant. I've looked up apps to help me and watched a bunch of videos. I'm finding it either an alocasia elephant ear or philodendron gigantium. I don't think it's the elephant ear because it has more philodendron like roots, but looking into the gigantium I don't think it's that either. It has large ish size leaves that have wavey sides, and it looks like it will be a climbing plant. (Sorry for bad spell on plant names 🤪)

I'm down to 2 and both (Dragon Scale & Zebrina Reticulata) are thriving and leaves are starting to size up, I love them both! Its like once I found the sweet spot in my home they finally started to thrive. Moral is all Alocasia are not created equal, if one type isnt working in your environment try another, there are so many affordable amazing Alocasia to chose from, your dark green Frydeck is very tempting, I may give it a try next! Hey Fern I have to say that the “Dark version “ of the Dragon Scale is very stunning. I have 15 Alocasian through trial and error often starting with no leaves they continue to amaze me. There’s unfortunately much false info out there pertaining to humidity and moisture but that all is relative to your location of this beautiful planet. 50% and airy soil/ substrate plus good and much nutrients are essential. Fish emulsion is my latest find and it’s FANTASTIC but it does stink for a while. My leaves are a lime green color too but I will be giving it more light and see if it gets darker. I have an Azlanii that pushed out a new leaf but that leaf won’t grow. Why is that? I have many in different Substrate, Perlite, Pons, Lecha, and Soil which shows that they adapt to any good healthy environment. Due to my living space I do enjoy the Jewel Alocasia better although my Regale is Wunderschöne but huge. Keep giving knowledge. Thanks for the video.

You stating how many Alocasia's you have, prompted me to count mine, as I honestly wasn't sure how many I had. But I have 27 different kinds of Alocasia's, and some of them I have more than one of any one kind. So yeah, I have a ton of them. The Micholitziana was my favorite Alocasia, until I got a Watsoniana, and it's like a Micholitziana on Steroids, as it also has the dark green leaf fronts with bright white venation, but the green has a circular pattern on it, and the white venation looks more like the verucosum with wingtips at the edges. It also has a more interesting deep purple backseal, with bright green chartreuse petioles. It's just a seriously ridiculously beautiful Alocasia.
I am wondering why you're still growing them in soil, however? You are one of the YT'rs who helped me make up my mind to switch to leca, perlite and pon. Now MOST of my plants are in leca/perlite or pon/perlite, and they are all doing much better than when they were in soil. Every weekend, I convert another few of my plants over. And my goal is to get all soil out of my house by the summer.

I notice when my mature alocasia stems get longer, the leaves get smaller and sometimes stop. I repotted one deeper in the soil and the leaves got bigger/faster. You need a bigger pot when the roots start growing out of bottom of it's current pot, for most plants anyway. A few plants like to have their roots crowded. If your pot is too big for the plant, you run the risk of getting root rot. Pot up for the plants current root size, not the plant size. Trust me, it should be growing OUT of it's pot, not INTO it's pot.

Yay! As I've mentioned before, Alocasia is my favorite genus. I have almost 50 different kinds. Following along with your video.
    1. Dragon Scale is definitely still one of my top favorites. I've always loved the way yours has looked. I rehabbed two of mine from the brink and now they're thriving.
    2. I've been rehabbing my Black Velvet for a while. I do feel they're a little more tricky though so don't feel bad.
    3. Your Cuprea looks amazing! It's grown so much. Mine's putting out a new leaf too. Our Alocasia have not gotten the memo that it's winter and I'm not complaining. 😂
    4. If you like the Maharani's texture, you should check out the Melo. That has really cool texture as well. They look similar but I believe the Melo's leaves stay a bit smaller.
    5. I remember the unboxing and comments on the Tandurusa. I'm not the one who left the initial comment though. For people who don't know the story, the person who named the plant 'Jaclyn' apparently poached it which is why we're trying to deter people from using that name. And Tandurusa means Deer Horns so definitely fitting.
Sorry for the rambling comment but I can talk about Alocasia for hours so I was super excited for this video! 🥰😂

@@wildfern I feel like I've seen other plant tubers having issues with their Black Velvets too so definitely don't feel bad. I'll be happy to share pics of my collection in discord if you're interested. They definitely have become an obsession but they're so much fun.

Black Velvet Alocasia is to me the slowest to grow, but it does eventually. 😅

    1. Thank you for your videos! Even though I usually take more of a background approach, I have enjoyed watching over the last couple of years 🥰
    2. I love the nature pin up shirt, I have to ask where you got it!

Love your alocacia collection. Our collections are almost the same. I have: Polly, Bambino, Regal Sheilds, Quilted Dreams, Aslanii, Cuprea, Green Dragon Scale, Silver Dragon Scale, Zebrina, Pink Dragon, Platinum, Macrorrhiza Varigata and about 25 corms with their first leaves up and second ones forming. I love these guys. And now I'm playing with two Colocasias. A Ilustris, and a Pharoah's mask. They were rescues, where I had to cut away dead roots, infested damaged leaves and take it back to the corm. Both have recovered and now have two new leaves. I can't wait to see how big they get.

I would like to have an alocasia but I'm scared ... they have the title of spider mite magnets and only one leaf or two plant. They often go dormant. I don't like this habit . I should get one? I'm thinking of get one Cuprea to start this journey

My black velvet was doing great for a few months and then dropped dead. I saved the corms and only 1 ever sprouted and it died off also super quickly I think they’re just hard to please.

I'd say your dragon scale is receiving to little light. It seems like the plant is making more chlorophyll to compensate.

if the corms are the little bulbs under in the soil, is it okay to just leave the corms there ?? i’m new to this so i’m just curious, if you just leave the corms attached to the plant what will happen ?

I just added couple of alocasia to my collection. Love the look of my silver dragon but I noticed that some of the leaves curl inwards (forming a little leaf cup) while others are curled outwards. Any idea why? Love your channel!

It's often watering: less water and it should stop. At least that's what worked for me. I also put manually the leaf into It's original shape, watered little less and it stayed that way 🙂

@@SparkleInMoonlight Mine does the same. I just thought it was normal because I've seen lots of others do it also. It doesn't bother me; in fact, I think it adds to the uniqueness of the plant. But maybe that's why mine only has 4 leaves and doesn't seem to be doing anything else. 🤔
