Not only that, once you lose your hearing: you'll never get it back. It's absolutely permanent. You'll be deaf for the rest of your life. That's why I'm planning to wear my Mack's Pro Ultra disposable foam earplugs with a NRR(Noise Reduction Rating) of 30 db(decibels) in conjunction with my Howard Light Impact Pro earmuffs with a NRR of 30db as well when I play any instrument that has a unadjustable volume of 80db or higher. Hearing is a very precious gift, that's why it should be taken good care of.
I use SE215s and I get a real good seal from them. I have no problem with the isolation, sound quality, and comfort with them. They isolate perfectly and sound great. Can't say the same for other people.
Glad u posted this...I had a dr. tell me I have permanent nerve damage in both ears last week...definitely made me start think about protecting what is left of my hearing
I just got some a couple days ago! They work so great!!!! I barely have to turn my music up and I can still hardly hear my drumming. It's amazing! Thank you so much for the idea cooper, they sure are some great sound isolation headphones!
Thanks for this! I've been playing for 33 years and have never worn ear protection, and I'm a loud player as well. Only until now have I really thought more about it and have run into the exact same problem - cranking up my earbuds and defeating the purpose of ear protection. I'm going to give this a try!
Hi Casey I really enjoy your tutorial and lesson videos, and so I was hoping you would consider making a video on the actual purpose of each cymbal (crash, ride, splash, china, etc. ) and what sound should come from each cymbal? I believe that this would be a really great and informative video, as I have seen many drummers out there who do not understand the differences between cymbals, and I consider it something that every drummer should know! Keep up the great work, I love your channel! Brandon :)
for anyone asking how you can wear these earphones and have headphones over them. 1. the cool thing about the shure se series is that they have a negative profile so they don't stick out of your ears like most earphones, they have more of a profile of a custom iem but with the universal fit. and 2. he's using the headphones that don't have any audio capabilities, he's only using the ones that are meant as earplugs basically.
Beat ya to it, been using my Winchester shooting ear muffs this way for about half a year. Cool too see a drummer of your quality using a similar ear protection technique
I do the exact same thing, i have Sennheiser earbuds that go into the ear canal. Then i put similar big ear protectors over them. Works REALLY good. Very controllable and simple.
This video isn't really about the headphones, its about protecting your hearing because that is what is most important, but I did want to give an example of something you could get if you were interested that protects your hearing and is very affordable. I've used mine for the past two days and I really like them. Its great to be able to turn down the volume of the music coming to my ears instead of trying to overpower my playing! Thanks for watching :)
If I have a Mac and Vic Firth corded headphones what is a good seperate amp or mixer solution to connect to if I don't want to plug directly into the Mac?
I use Behringer DT770 pro headphones, they have a great quality and they isolate the sound enough for me to play to a song. However, I do the whole thing a little different, I hear my drums through my computer and the microhpones while I'm recording. This is quite beneficial as you can adjust the volume of your drums and the volume of your songs :) you should give it a try!
My ears ring constantly too :/ I only hear the ring in complete silence, like before sleep but it's really annoying. I'm totally getting those headphones. Better late than never :)
The thing with me is i actually want to hear the drums while im playing to make sure that it sounds good and im actually following the song im playing.
When I purchased my drum kit, I also bought a pair of the Hearos Rock n' Roll ear filters. I put them in and I can't hear anything but my drums, but just enough to hear what I am playing. It's not blasting in my ears. They're comfortable and you can wash them and reuse them. I would recommend them. They're only like $5 at guitarcenter. Have you ever heard of these, Casey? And, if so, what is your opinion/thoughts?
I think this is the first time i've done something before you :P I have the Stereo Isolation Headphones and they work great! for listening to music on top or just playing..p.s.: sweet new cover that you just made private, i caught it before you did haha :P
I don´t understand musicians playing without Hearing protection. I´ve played with protection from the first day becuase I can´t bear a second playing the drums without Hearing protection. I use those Vic Firth Headphones for many years now as well. Really great product!
playing drums using a sony mdr XB 500, for me its perfect since the i could hear what i play and doesn't really sound too loud...p.s sorry for my bad english..it is my second language
Hey man, I do something similar: Hearos hi-fi in ear isolation buds and a good pair of headphones overtop:) that way, both the sound of the drums and the music have to go through the protection before they hit your eardrum. I Love this method cause its a natural eq to both the music and my drums:) (and its much cheaper) ;)
I'm 61 and have been playing drums and guitar since I was 18. When I developed tinnitus, I was able to cure it by not playing nor listening to loud music for around 2 years. As I began to play again, now the hiss inside my ears has returned and it never stops, even when I go to sleep. Take care !
I have both and the SE535's are more of an IEM with graceful mids, whcih is good for music that has a lot of vocals. the SE215's has a bassier sound signature which I also like about them. I use the SE215's more when I'm out and about than the SE535's.
Just a quick suggestion, you could put the price next to each drum, cymbal..., anyway, as a drummer myself, I would really appreciate to know the price just in case I would like to purchase one of these items. Thanks :)
That's exactly what I do Casey! I bought some cheap Skullcandy In ear type earphones then put some builders Ear defenders over the top! Look pretty silly but it works a treat! +It's a cheap option! :D
I have suffered from hearing loss in 2nd grade, My parents had to pay a lot of money for hearing aids... I have been playing drums for 8 months now. So hopefully all you drummers and musicians out there don't suffer the same fate like me
very cool that you did this video, after doing 6 years in the army let me tell you that you can lose a lot of your hearing at a young age and it never comes back
I have an electronic set some don't use protection, when I get an acoustic set I'm going to use ky turtle beach gaming headphones, if those don't work I'll get these .
I recently got the Vic Firth's with the stereo built-in, it's amazing so far but it does change the sound of my drums and my bass drum sound pretty bad :p
Hahah Nice! That video was not supposed to post for a few days, so you got lucky ;) I'm not entirely sure why it did... which is why it had that stupid title lol
Do you have any idea of good sound insulating for walls? My parents are going to build a shed in the summer and I might be taking the old galvanized shed that I can put a drum kit in and computer (man cave sort of thing). I live in a housing estate and all the houses are pretty close. My mom cuts hair for people in the house and my next door neighbor does massages for people so sound insulation is very important!
+Trev x In this case, individual opinions don't matter. When I hear about drum teachers/students and popular drummers who have hearing problems, I know I have to protect myself to avoid those problems. I know you made your comment a year ago, but still I want to say that placing a comment like yours doesn't contribute to the topic. It's just your individual case, and who knows you might get the ringing in the ears later on in your life. Anyway, I do hope you protect your ears because once it's too late you'd slap yourself in the face.
You should probably get your hearing checked out by an audiologist if you haven't done so already. The peace of mind you'll get from verifying that your hearing is still perfect will be fantastic. As an aside for anyone else; consider getting musicians plugs made by an audiologist. They're far more neutral earplugs made of acrylic with a filter so that you can listen to your playing at a safer level without distorting the sound.
I agree that people need to protect their ears, people try to be "cool" by listening to super loud music and not protecting their ears while playing or standing right next the speakers at a show. But all you need a decent pair of closed headphones imo. I use JVC-RX700s and they're amazing quality for the price and block out enough sound. Imo those ear muffs block out too much and are too uncomfortable.
I developed tinnitus. Noticed after my achilles surgery not sure if its related. And trust me guys it sucks. a ringing or hiss in ur ear for life. Cant wait for my foot to heal so I can get back to drumming...
Hey Coop3r, can I use these headphones with regular phones underneath to hear music while playing? I know you mentioned the Shure's but those are in-ear & they're very expensive. I was wondering if I can use regular 30/40 bucks phones underneath the DB22's. Keep doing ya thing!
I've been playing percussion since I was about 4 I guess and since I've got older I never really cares about my ears that much until now. Btw I'm not an adult I'm only 15 and still drumming
Right now im using Alpine Music Safe Pro as protection... I think personally, that they are very visible, and thats why i usally don't play with them live... Do you have any other ideas of earplugs, that are not visible? I use them for playing only, not hearing music and so on
Hey dude, can you consider doing Nero-Doomsday? Ive watched most of your skrillex covers and I would really love it if you did Doomsday, it would sound awesome with your style!!
Hey, I was wondering, I have a noise cancelling headset (that covers my ears), and they seem to do the job of cancelling sound. But I’m not sure if they really are good for protecting my ears. I like them because I can listen to music while I play, and still protect my ears... or so i think. What are your thoughts on this? The headset is Bose QC 35 ll
hey cooper it would be great if u replied to this cuz i only wear headphones if im listening to music but do u think i should wear them anyway to protect my ears cuz i dont actually hit my drums so hard so should i wear v head phones all v time
A few weeks ago I went to a night club which was being held in a bar and the DJ had the music totally blasting like I've never heard music as loud as this before it was stupidly loud and my friend and I was sat across the room from the speakers and after 10 minuets when I went to go the toilets my ears was ringing like hell and I couldn't hear a thing. I had to keep going away because it was horrible. Anyway by the end of the night I left and my hearing was totally fucked like normal talking sounded like they was whispering. Ever since that day I've had constant tinnitus. Don't make the same mistake I made that was ONE session and I have already developed tinnitus.
i have headphones headphones that protect my ears also too but I just most of the beat I played it's really hard and fast and have a cup of drums out all go really all out on them but I still like you in through my headphones but I could still make a be like really good but hopefully I don't go death even though that it's really hard sure to listen to the base
Yea I've been using Bose headphones and there's just to enough balance in the headphone to make the drums stand out without blasting your ears and my old Vic firth audio jack headphones had amazing balance and durability but someone stole them and now I'm stuck with the Bose and currently I have tetanitus in my right ear...an annoying white noise that's been troubling for a week now...also does a tone know how to help stop the ringing?
Do you think the Vic Firth SIH 1 are also worth to buy cause i know the technicque of let the in ear headphoenes surround by your drum headphones. And now i ask my self what i should buy becaue i also could use the Vic Firth SIH 1 for normal hearing or sth. like that not only for drumming
Hey man, could you do a drum cover of Save Me by Avenged Sevenfold? I know you're not a metal drummer, but if you infuse your style with it you could do some great things with that song!

Protect you ears because tinnitus is awful

I actually got these a year or so back from my drum teacher. They really do a great job blocking out unneeded noise.

You can still hear your drums, it just protects your ears from too much volume.
these headphones are amazing i have them for two months and they really changed my hearing and drumming
I am also looking for it , what headphone is it brother?

Only until now have I really thought more about it and have run into the exact same problem - cranking up my earbuds and defeating the purpose of ear protection. I'm going to give this a try!
ive been doing the "headphones in and over" technique for quite a while now, best thing to do to play along to something
The Shure SE535-V retails for around $500 and uses a standard 3/8" headphone jack (though I believe they also include a 1/4" adapter in the box.)

My mum says this to me all the time, but hearing it from you makes it much more understandable

I don´t understand musicians playing without Hearing protection. I´ve played with protection from the first day becuase I can´t bear a second playing the drums without Hearing protection. I use those Vic Firth Headphones for many years now as well. Really great product!
Would you recommend this over just buying the Vic firth headphones that come with cords and decreases noise?
playing drums using a sony mdr XB 500, for me its perfect since the i could hear what i play and doesn't really sound too loud...p.s sorry for my bad english..it is my second language

i've actually done this before, i'll pop headphones in then put an over-ear headset on and it works great :)
Currently using the same headphones! Awesome idea, thanks man
can it be used for music and gaming ?
That's exactly what I do Casey! I bought some cheap Skullcandy In ear type earphones then put some builders Ear defenders over the top! Look pretty silly but it works a treat! +It's a cheap option! :D
Beethoven was deaf but still wore masterpieces :)
Not a great mentality tbh
I have suffered from hearing loss in 2nd grade, My parents had to pay a lot of money for hearing aids... I have been playing drums for 8 months now. So hopefully all you drummers and musicians out there don't suffer the same fate like me

Thanks for the tip Cooper :D
I own a pair of Shure SE 215's and they work wonders for me, when I play drums I can hardly hear them at all.
I recently got the Vic Firth's with the stereo built-in, it's amazing so far but it does change the sound of my drums and my bass drum sound pretty bad :p

Thanks u really helped out
Nice info and nice jam :D
"Protect your hearing", words to live by right there.
Proxicat Exactly, because once you lose it, you'll never get it back. Hearing is very precious gift.
Shure SE535's omg :o I want those so bad! Might just go with the 215's
What do you recommend?
1: Your headphones/hearing protection with phones inside of it;
or
2: Vic Firth SIH1 (built-in phones);
Thanks.
My opinion is the louder the better! My ears barely ring at all lol even after I had ear surgery to get rid of the hearing loss I had as a kid.
Idiot

Yeah I had band practice last night and my ears were ringing hard that night. I really should gey ear plugs or something
I use my Beats Solo HD headphones. Its perfect
Just bought those yesterday
Thanks man🤘

if you have a mixer you can buy an adapter so you can hook it up to your mixer and hear the drum mix along with the song :p
Hey Coop3r, can I use these headphones with regular phones underneath to hear music while playing?
I know you mentioned the Shure's but those are in-ear & they're very expensive.
I was wondering if I can use regular 30/40 bucks phones underneath the DB22's.
Keep doing ya thing!
im probaly getting 3 new cymbals so i will really need this
would you recommend in the ear head phones, or the vic firth earbuds for marching snare drummers?
i bought $8 earphones that cancel out sound amazingly well even when the song/click track isn't at full volume.
Hey, I'm actually a gamer and I play drums too... Can you suggest a headphone or an earplug that is good for gaming AND drumming? Thanks.. :)
Yeah um construction over the ear headphones work too. Plus the cost way less than $25
Can u plzz make a vedio on mixing drums after recording
I have a pair of the stereo vic firth headphones

nice NICE INFORMATION....!! THANKS
The headset is
Bose QC 35 ll
Do you think that the in-ears would do a good protection when you play at a "normal" volume?
hey cooper it would be great if u replied to this cuz i only wear headphones if im listening to music but do u think i should wear them anyway to protect my ears cuz i dont actually hit my drums so hard so should i wear v head phones all v time
A few weeks ago I went to a night club which was being held in a bar and the DJ had the music totally blasting like I've never heard music as loud as this before it was stupidly loud and my friend and I was sat across the room from the speakers and after 10 minuets when I went to go the toilets my ears was ringing like hell and I couldn't hear a thing. Do you use the protective headphones on live shows?
so who are the ear buds made by and is the sound better than the beats
I wish I did this from the beginning
wowowow man you should really make a cover in bloom NIRVANA yoiu have amazing sound toms ;) 7:48
Youre right it is an important issue that many do not take into account:V
Sound advice (no pun intended) Nice drumming too
i have headphones headphones that protect my ears also too but I just most of the beat I played it's really hard and fast and have a cup of drums out all go really all out on them but I still like you in through my headphones but I could still make a be like really good but hopefully I don't go death even though that it's really hard sure to listen to the base
muito bom o video
Would it be safe to wear headphones while wearing disposable earplugs ?
Yeah this is what im doing in the begin of my drumming
I played drums 6 hours a day without headphones for a few weeks then played at max volume for a few months
Can I use Apple Airpods under these?
I blew up my ear while playing drums like 2 weeks ago, everything started spinning like fucking crazy. Protect your ear guys.
Kiremaru i
So what kind of ear buds do you use?
Hey man, could you do a drum cover of Save Me by Avenged Sevenfold? I know you're not a metal drummer, but if you infuse your style with it you could do some great things with that song!
Cooper, whats the name of the earphones you use?
why u don't use the headphones for the music?
hey coop3r can you make a video with your dog in it ( other than the Harlem shake )
I just got a pair of radians custom ear plugs.
Hey what kind IEM Systems you have? Like what equipments you use? :))
Any Suggestion On How Can I Protect My Hearing When Using E-Drums? What Sort Of Headphones Should I Use?
Doesn't really matter because you can turn the volume down on e-drums. The whole reason that you need hearing protection for an acoustic drum set is that you can't turn down the volume. If you are playing e-drums in any place where they need to be loud like a live performance then you can just use any hearing protection you would use for acoustic drums like foam earplugs.
