Buster Bloodvessel appeared on a BBC show called 'Never Mind The Buzzcocks' many years ago and I was lucky enough to be in the Green Room afterwards with a friend who really wanted to say hello to him but was nervous about approaching him. When she plucked up the courage he was the warmest, most welcoming guy you could ever hope to meet and really made her day!
@@ToddQuinlan I have an odd memory that he may actually have been part of the "I.D. Parade" - in one of those bizarre "Buzzcocks" moments where everyone clearly knew the answer but Mark Lamarr was taking the piss out of the format of that round by asking "Is it A...; B... ; C...; D....; or E.... *Buster Bloodvessel* !???"
@@johna5635 Oh yes, I forgot he was in the identity parade in an episode as well. Classic Lamarr. Right up there with him going full Windsor Davies when they had Don Estelle in the lineup. 🙂 Awesome that you got to meet Buster though 👍👅
@@ToddQuinlan Yeah - he was a top man. Far from being aloof and "star-like", he made my friend feel that he was genuinely chuffed she wanted to speak to him.
Doug is a great friend of mine. We go back almost 40 years. I stayed on his houseboat in North London back in 99 he is one of the nicest people I've ever met!
I went to see them in the late 90s; there was a ska night, with 3 bands (Bad Manners headlining, obvs) and in between acts, the venue played tracks from a ska compilation album. Seriously, there was hardly any gap in between tracks, even during changeovers. To start with, the crowd was sort of nodding along, but about ten minutes in, it was like a switch flipped and *everyone* started bouncing around like pogo sticks on a trampoline. Great fun, but we all suffered for it. Some got heatstroke and had to be carried away. Me? I managed to keep going until three songs from the end, when my right leg gave out. No warning, The first I knew about it was when I suddenly found myself on the floor, My left leg hadn't got the message yet, and was still gamely trying to dance out of sheer habit, blissfully unaware of the situation. Brilliant night.
As a BRiT who was born in the 60,s and became an 80.s & 90,s era music lover there is one thing i guess we overlook and thats just how much stuff was british, and there were bucket loads of it,bad manners is just one gem of many.
One of my favourite bands, I bought the 7" single of this in 1979. Never knew at the time, it was about beer !! Along with the specials, it was the sound of my early teenage years.
Buster did scare me as a 10 yr old back then .. Glad the next wave of music in the UK was 'New Romantic' ... Gary Numan, Visage, Depeche Mode, Adam Ant , OMD , Heaven 17 , Human league and the list went on
"Special Brew" is a high alcohol (9%) beer brewed by carlsburg and was cheap back in the day so the go to for alcoholics. Now beer tax means it is more expensive and also alcohol now bout 7% so alcoholics need to be more creative! Lol
Best thing is they’re still on tour. One of my favourite bands growing up (I was 12 when this song charted) and I’m going to see them again in Glasgow in January 2025. 44 plus years later and still going!
And the next lesson will be about Sqeeze, Jools Holland, you won’t be disappointed lads. Glad to see you enjoying the learning curve, old skin, spirit of 69, hit the Ska, Pressure Drop, Al Capone by Buster, get ya Docs on and moon stomp , Oi Oi
Having seen them in concert I can confirm that Buster is no fan of underwear, he is however a fan of mooning his audience. Busters chocolate starfish is not a sight for the faint hearted.
Do you really believe that in 1980 young people didn't have easy access to alcohol, tobacco... speed, acid, cannabis... Heroin and cocaine was readily available too, if you wanted it... But speed and acid was rife back then. Good, clean acid was a lot easier to get in 1980 than it is now...
Do I really believe?? Quite a confrontational opening line . Well here’s one back at you. The Music scene and the drugs scene were inseparable at that time.
Bad Manners were a skinhead band, their live gigs were pretty violent. Don't be fooled by their comedy. Back in the day their live shows were pretty heavy duty!
Love Bad Manners & can't wait til I see them again on 23 December at Epic studios in Norwich. Saw them there a few years ago & it's my favourite ever gig
I love to see these guys. I'm so glad you like em. 👍 👍🇬🇧 Apart from being a fun band & not taking themselves too seriously. They made some bloody great music. ❤🔥🇬🇧🤪
Special brew is a lager in UK which is twice strength of normal beer and usually bought by people who drink in the street during the daytime to put it lightly.
Fantastic! Love a bit of Bad Manners, great band, and a great time in my life ☺ May I suggest Echo 4-2, Night Bus to Dalston, Just a Feeling and Walking in The Sunshine from Bad Manners
you must try madness Baggy Trousers they where the most popular band in the 80`s and still play at most parties` to this day pick any Madness song its nuts must see all video's that go with them. s
Absolutely legendary! The manners are definitely a lesser known group in the US unless you’re in with that crowd but my god what a great band. Legends in the two tone arena
Saw Bad Manners last year - they've still got it!! Great sound, great set and Buster is such a great front man - fun to watch and doesn't take himself to seriously. Peppered the performance with shouts of "You fat bastard" 😂😂
they are still going i think, playing scooter rallies and ska festivals. saw them in 81 when i was 11. he did the whole gig in a only a pair of big y-fronts. was good. nerd fact is that buster bloodvessel was a character in the beatles film 'magical mystery tour'. dougie is quite slim now. and the harmonica player is called winston bazoomies, which is a great name
Guys you making me feel old. I remember watching this TOTP like yesterday. It was 40 kin years ago ffs. Glad you guys into bad manners... it was great fun back then and if you play their shit today at parties it still goes down well. Its PAAÀRTY music!
song was about getting your heart broken, using "Special Brew" a beer drunk only by alcoholics here, as a pun. (addiction) Not letting the love leave. Tune is way more than fun, like all their tunes, besides Can Can. Real life stories in there brothers.
Brilliant yeah like others have said special brew used to be strong beer and cheap in England and now like so many other beers here is now weaker and more expensive and less available and yeah Lorraine by Bad Manners is good
Been to 3 gigs 1st in '81, last in 2007 - No one I've ever seen works harder to make sure the crowd has the bestest time of their lives - or sweats their way through a gig so much.
This was a song about the infamous beer called Special Brew which has a very high alcohol content 9% by volume made by Carlsberg, was brewed to mark the visit to the brewery by Sir Winston Churchill in 1950 also known as Tramp Juice as it didn't take much to get you drunk , that's why bad manners wanted a barrel of it Inthe song...
Bad manners were a guilty pleasure for loads of people I knew but wouldn't admit it. I'd happily say I've bought some of their stuff. What I cannot believe you haven't checked out much if any Madness yet. "Our House", "Baggy Trousers", "House of fun" to name but a few of their hits. They were renowned for their videos in the 80's.
Buster was so fit for his size not that there was nothing wrong with him he could move about like a 20 year old last time I saw him he was quite thin but I hope he wasn’t shamed into it great video guys 👍
Nelly the Elephant by the Toy Dolls lads. Everyone would empty the dancefloor, to the walls, and when the chorus kicked in, charge into the middle for some mild violence. Think early 80's mosh pit!
Special Brew is a very strong beer.....the choice of winos!.....he was sitting drinking a can and started singing to the can and then wrote the lyrics down!
Buster Bloodvessel once accidently mooned the pope, he was getting heckled at a festival in Italy, so mooned the crowd not realising the pope was in the audience. You want more reggae meets two tone check out gentleman's dub club- "high grade" is a banger.
I saw them at a college gig in the 80s - by the end of the third song i swear there was steam coming off the top of his head - i spent the rest of the gig convinced that he would bust a blood vessel or something worse - I don't know how he was able to keep this up.😆
Dumbfounded as to why you’s didnae comment, probably didnae notice, his tongue slobbering around during his energetic routine !! This always made me laugh 😝 🤣😂!! Buster was such a character 🤩 By far, the best two tone sound & performance by some distance ‼️

One of the only bands that got boys dancing in the early 80's at the youth club 👍
Special Brew and Night Boat to Cairo by Madness were my favourite songs to skank to when I was a schoolkid.
I love this song, never realised it was about the drink, I've been singing it to my kids for years :-)
The lead singer is called Buster Bloodvessel. Check out Swords of a Thousand Men by Tenpole Tudar. Loving the videos, guys.
Good call. Swords is in a similar vein to this.
Another +1 for that.
