Nice video, but viewers with less experience need to be aware of a couple of unmentioned things. First, just because the crankshaft is at TDC does not mean the valves are closed and ready to adjust. The engine must be on the compression stroke, so once on TDC, if the valves are open, the engine must be rotated around a second time to TDC to be on the compression stroke. Second, once on the compression stroke, it is not uncommon for the decompression cam to have stuck, causing the right side exhaust valve to be partially open. That needs to be disengaged by quickly rotating the engine back and forth. Third, a feeler gauge other than a generic automotive gauge should be used. The way the 400 is set up, a more narrow feeler gauge would be ideal. An automotive one can be used with success, but it's a lot harder to get a good feel for where the adjustment needs to be.
what is the compression stroke I never did this yet I seen a video say check they valves by hand for wiggle if it wiggles on TDC then you can adjust is this true
Referring to the valves. You absolutely have to have the engine at top dead center on the compression stroke. When on the compression stroke, both of your intake and exhaust valves are closed because you want to compress the air that the intake valves just pulled into the combustion chamber. When you have your valve covers removed, and your top dead center mark aligned on the left side of the engine, all of your valve springs will be extended. If the valves are anywhere close to being adjusted, you will have a little slack in them, and that will help confirm you're at TDC on the compression stroke. If you have a couple valves that are open, which will be indicated by the springs being compressed and no slack in the rockers, rotate the engine around one more revolution until you're TDC mark is once again aligned on the left side of the engine. Once on TDC, if all the valves are closed with the exception of the exhaust valve on the right side, chances are the decompression cam is slightly engaged, and all you have to do to release that is rock the crankshaft back and forth a couple times and that should release it. The worst part about the whole process is getting the feeler gauge in there with the right bend to know for sure that you're getting an accurate reading. When in doubt, a little loose on the valve adjustment is better than a little tight. A little tick from the valves being a hair loose is better than having them too tight and burning a valve. If you had them substantially too tight, it would be very obvious because the fourwheeler wouldn't idle correctly, if even at all.
I always check the clearance, before I loosen anything. Might not need any adjustment at all. Double check the clearance, after you tighten, and torque the nuts ! You went thru all the trouble to tear it apart, might as well double check everything. Good video, tho...
There are 4 strokes. 2 up and 2 down. The crank turns 2 times to accomplish all 4 strokes. The first stroke is the intake stroke(piston goes down, allowing fuel in the chamber). 2nd stroke is the combustion stroke (piston goes up compressing the air and fuel). Crank has turned one full turn at this point. Third stroke (piston goes down after the fuel/air is ignited by the spark) creating the combustion stroke. Fourth stroke the exhaust stroke (piston goes back up) pushing the gases created by combustion out the exhaust. And that is the 2nd full turn of the crank. You want to make sure you are adjusting the valves at the combustion stroke. Not the exhaust stroke. As both are technically located at TDC. Just on 2 different turns in the cycle. Hope this helps!
So true, did mine and I definitely adjusted my valves like 180° off and quad wouldn't start. Struggled like it had 15:1 compression and a half dead battery lol

I have watched this video a dozen times - the first time about a year ago - and I am just as confused now as I was the first time I watched it. When you put your feeler gauge in the "hole" you are forced to go in on a slant to get the gauge in position. How are you then able to flatten it out to get a proper .10 measurement? thanks. love the videos

I was riding last week and now my 400ex won't run seems like the gas is not coming out it kicks over but doesn't run does that mean I have to clean the carb I just did this two years ago but I didn't ride it a lot in 2 years
Your intake valves are located on side of engine your carbs are on and exhaust are on side of engine your exhaust is on. So in this case intakes are facing back of bike and exhaust is facing forward.
If the ATV sounds ok, I don't know what we would be able to see on a video that you can't. Generally, if we try to help diagnose something, it's because you know something is wrong and there are symptoms that are not normal. We try to help sort it out, based on those symptoms. We love helping our viewers as much as we can, but we have limits over the internet. If you want an inspection, your local service shop can put their hands on it and test the electrical, compression and fluids.
My 400ex is hard to start but sounds ok when it idles but when I give it a tap of the throttle it makes a knocking sound, only when I tap the throttle could this be valves?
Usually, the burning oil is from your piston rings going bad. If your valves are way out of spec, you can damage the valves and/or piston which will cause all kinds of problems.

But would completly go away when it warmed up any advice. Engine seems to run fineit just ticks so loud . Only modifications to it is a wiseco piston and 10.1 compression that's all

i cant seem to find a video on how to remove a stator on a honda 250ex anywhere on the net. if the opportunity comes to you can you make a video on how to remove stator on 250ex.
If it's knocking on the bottom end, it shouldn't be the valves, that is usually a bearing fail on your connecting rod. I would tear it down and inspect it before you blow a hole in something.

I'm going to need a little more detail. Is it in this video or this one? ruclips.net/video/qsuuWZhfKo4/видео.html&lc=UgwzZln6YQ1FI8BsFvp4AaABAg To the left you have the starter solenoid and to the right you have the rectifier (with the fins on it). Is that what you mean?
Unless the valves are reallllly bad, you won't tell much from idling, perhaps some ticking. You are supposed to adjust valves before they get bad and damage the valves.
+Shakiel Mcclain There are several conditions that can cause an engine to back fire. A backfire can happen if there is an imbalance in the air to fuel ratio. If the fuel mixture is lean, it will backfire through the intake, or too rich it will backfire out of the exhaust. There could also be an issue with the timing. I would start by checking the intake boot for leaks. Best way to do this is to let it adle and sptay carb cleaner on the intake to see if the RPMs increase.

But would completly go away when it warmed up any advice. Engine seems to run fineit just ticks so loud . Only modifications to it is a wiseco piston and 10.1 compression that's all
Did you adjust them while the engine was hot? Sounds like it needs another look.
Partzilla no engine was cold. Topndead center. All valves close . I just did a new piston and piston rings following your other video . and decided to adjust them while I had the atv taken a part.
Warm it up, re-adjust valves. I'm guessing they are just too tight.
Partzilla fix the problem one of my exhaust valves clearance was very lose tight it back to spec. And seem like it sounds back to normal. There still some ticking but sounds just like before
It's .01intake .012exhaust
what is the valve clearance on a 2013 or are all yrs the same?
What tool do you use to get into the crank case on the side
10mm Allen wrench and 6mm allen wrench
would this be the same process step by step if it was a honda trx250ex? i need to adjust my valves and i want to do it myself.
Lombardo ZarateIII yeah I need to know for my 300ex as well.
hopefully he replies do us soon their charging me $255 to adjust my 250ex valves crazy man.
The way you adjust the valves is the same. the difference is the clearance both intake and exhaust should be between 0.13 mm and 0.005 mm
This is same for the 300ex as well
thank you sir your help is greatly appreciated
i cant seem to find a video on how to remove a stator on a honda 250ex anywhere on the net. if the opportunity comes to you can you make a video on how to remove stator on 250ex.
Hi Lombardo! For sure, we'll add it to the video request list. Great idea!
Partzilla Thank you for the video request list add. Im sure the video if made will be a great deal of help too many.
Do you have a video on how to adjust the valves on a 2006 trx 450...?
Not yet, we are trying to get our hands on 450 to do a spread of videos.
Do you adjust all of the valves??
You're already there, why not check and adjust all of them?
What about a bottom end knocking noise? Could it be a valve adjustment ?
If it's knocking on the bottom end, it shouldn't be the valves, that is usually a bearing fail on your connecting rod. I would tear it down and inspect it before you blow a hole in something.
Could you please make a valve video on a trx250x/ex.. i have a 2018 trx250x and its been a month and i dont want to spend $200 at honda house to get this done.. please
We will try to get our hands on one. What happened that you need to do valves on a new unit already? If something is wrong, it should be covered by the warranty.
Partzilla i got it Oct 7th and its making a ticking noise as of a day or two ago..(not super loud but its noticeable)i called honda house to make appointment /the first month check up(the once over) is not covered by the warranty its going to cost me 199$..
great vids
I followed the video 100% but when I was done it sounded worse, I could hear the chain rattling. Any ideas what I did wrong?
Ever got it working good again?
My atv backfires like crazy, could it be the valve clearance too tight?
Could be jetting, air fuel ratio, valves, timing...
Is it best to do this on a cold or warm engine??
The engine should be warm.
Partzilla thanks for the reply
What are the four top caps actually called, i stripped mine please help
They are called "Tappet adjusting hole caps" #2 on the diagram.

Will this method work on a 05 Raptor (Or YFM) 350?
It's the same process.
Okay, thank you
What size for valve caps?
24
Why doesn't this say anything about being on the compression stroke?
Nvm other comments cleared this up for me! Thanks guys
where do you stick the feeler gauge in between
Slides into the space between the adjusting screw and the top of the valve.
What’s the black thing next to the battery
I'm going to need a little more detail. Is it in this video or this one? ruclips.net/video/qsuuWZhfKo4/видео.html&lc=UgwzZln6YQ1FI8BsFvp4AaABAg
To the left you have the starter solenoid and to the right you have the rectifier (with the fins on it). Is that what you mean?
.01for intake, .012exhaust
how come you never do a before adjustment and after adjustment with the bike running
Unless the valves are reallllly bad, you won't tell much from idling, perhaps some ticking. You are supposed to adjust valves before they get bad and damage the valves.
thanks for the reply, yeah i suppose its hard to tell, either way love the honda work your channel does. take care, sub'd!!!!
Which is intake and exhaust?
Exhaust valve is forward.
I bought a 26 blade gauge but I don’t see .1 mm
Thats what im asking my self
Which are the exaust valves?
Exhaust valves are closest to forward.
Thanks for the reply, Could you make a swingarm bearing change? And a oil tank install? It would help me alot. Thanks in advanced!
It's added to the list!
Partzilla thanks, cant wait!!!
How would you get the caps off if there all round and or broke?
Depends on how bad they are. Vice Grips? grind a slot and use a flathead screwdriver... Get creative, you can get them off.
I adjusted mine. And now it’s louder than before 🙄
what causes my engine to backfire
+Shakiel Mcclain There are several conditions that can cause an engine to back fire. A backfire can happen if there is an imbalance in the air to fuel ratio. If the fuel mixture is lean, it will backfire through the intake, or too rich it will backfire out of the exhaust. There could also be an issue with the timing. I would start by checking the intake boot for leaks. Best way to do this is to let it adle and sptay carb cleaner on the intake to see if the RPMs increase.
