I see you don’t have very many likes or comments. But dude…. Thank you!!! Both intake and exhaust were TIGHT idk how I didn’t bend a valve or crack a piston. All took at the very least 2 FULL turns to even get the feeler gauge under them. Again. Thank you
I love the old style 400 exes. I got a 1999 red and black old style 400 X. It looks beautiful and runs amazing 99s are bulletproof. And I have still but second gear is out. I have an 06 400 X just like that but if I would choose between both of them and this is just me, I would go with the 99 I just like older stuff, but both bikes look beautiful.
Si I aligned the crank shaft to T mark. I adjusted both my intake valves to spec but when I adjust my right intake valve my left one closes and becomes out of adjustment all over again. I turned on the bike and valves knock even harder.
Without actually seeing with you you're doing you're definitely doing something wrong the valve closest to the carburetor is your intake valve and the valve closest to your exhaust is your exhaust valve they both have different specs
Is it true that you have to turn it to TDC and it be on a certain rotation. Bc it seemed like every other turn of the engine it was tight around TDC and then it wasn’t. I don’t remember which turn I did it on
@@frankindiesel8300 correct. You'll feel compression building If you go past the mark you'll feel the compression release in the motor that means you went too far and it's just a fraction and you'll be too far.
Did that a few times and still same issue it even started smoking. So I've ordered new timing chain and top end valves with seals new springs everything. Even a new cam
Still ticking means too tight or too lose. Smoking means possibly to loose. You have to be very careful when you're lining up the little hash mark to top dead center If you go just past it it goes past the compression stroke and you're way too far. Your can feel if you go to far. I would double check.
I had it top dead center I did it twice first time had some and still ticked and second time no smoke and a little ticking and go aggravated and stopped before anything happened lol you know how it is
I don't know how many hours you have on the machine but it's possible now with the valves being adjusted properly that maybe the rings are a little worn and its more obvious now. 🤷
@@OdysseyOffroad yeah o haven’t really thought of that but it’s turns great no lack of power or anything just has a ticking like every 400 I’ve ever seen just wanted to give it a try to get it out

Awesome I'm glad it helped you out!
The 400ex is a solid machine.
Great video!!
Thanks man, yeah it's a solid little machine for sure can't beat a Honda.
@@OdysseyOffroad Yes sir!
Just adjusted mine today ...MAN NO MORE HARD STARTS! It was only a little tight but what a difference
Great video perfect instruction. This is how every how to video should be thanks 👍
@@franklinlatour2655 thank you! I appreciate the feedback and glad it helped! 🤘🏻
About to go see a minty '06 400EX, thanks for the baseline on proper idle sounds!

@@bradleyh5240 400s were really cool machines. It's a shame they don't make them anymore.

Great video👍 about to adjust the valve’s on my 400
Glad you enjoyed!

Has to be on the compression stroke
Did you do it cold or warm because mine every other valve but the back left intake valve there is zero room for the feeler gage even all the way loose
Always cold.
Mine was loose and I adjusted mine now it don't run as good. I'm going to recheck it in the morning and make sure I did it right.
It's very easy to go past top Dead center You might have done that and then adjusted your valves and now they're too tight
So the line right in front of the t stamp is what needs lined up with the mark?

@@frankindiesel8300 what was ur problem?
I adjusted the valves now it smokes blue after throttle
Wondering if you can work on my 400ex where are you from?
No sorry. But thanks for asking.
Very good video 👍
Thanks!
great video thank you
For the renegade will you need a tune for the clutch kit?
The Renegade is already tuned. But you do not need to tune it to clutch it. I have a video on that already.
Gotta take the oil out ?
No.
I did mine and when I did it I started it and it was still ticking and spit some blue smoke out of the exhaust but has not smoked before?
