Hey guys, this is a 1999 Honda 400EX that I bought for 500 bucks. It was torn down and left in a barn for decades. The history is unknown, it was bought in an estate sale along with multiple other machines. I put a ton of time into this design, build and production but it was definitely worth it! There is nothing better that I enjoy then to watching an old one brought back to life. You make it look easy, but I know it isn’t. Great video with a lot of information.
Awesome video sir! Glad to know that I'm not the only one that misses components and has to go back and take stuff apart again and again! Once, I was actually putting together an aftermarket 400ex clutch basket, and had everything correct, and then while explaining it in the the video, I flipped the plate and secured it on backwards. I didn't even notice it until I was editing the video and had to pull the whole clutch side back apart and do it all over again!
Dude!! I've done that too lol; I had to split the bottom end of the KFX and put in a washer for the transmission; watching my own video saved my ass 😂 I appreciate the kind words man!
Michael you done an amazing job on that quad that's been sitting for that long. Love your passion for doing rebuilds. I wish I had your knowledge and skills. Would love to have that quad knowing it was built by you. I hope your surgery goes well and recovery goes quickly for you keep up the awesome work.
The 400EX is the most dependable quad I have ever owned. Bought one new in 2000, I still have it basically all original even down to the brake pads. @@andrewstahl6916 at that point in time it was the first new sport quad released in over a decade. Soon thereafter there were many better choices. Until recently there used value was almost nothing, so there was no point in parting with a clean low hour machine.
Just switched out the factory brake pads on my 2000 400ex last summer. I've owned it since new. Still looks brand new. Dont ride all that often but no way I can part with it.

Great job and great video, Mike! I love the single episode builds. You put a lot of love and soul into that quad and whomever gets it next will be one lucky dude. Keep up the awesome work. You not only have incredible machine building talent, but you’ve also learned to rock the video production and editing side of things as well. Wishing you a speedy recovery with your shoulder!
Fantastic build! Tearing into my 99 & adding a WISECO 11:1 piston, stage 2 hotcam & a K&N air filter. Bought it last June. Bike sat for yrs. Orig owner passed away & his widow put it in storage. I bought it from a guy who bought it a couple of yrs ago who barley rode it. The intake ports were still factory clean. I was torn to keep it oem or mod it out….I chose the latter 😃

Mike for some reason I thought that you were to clean and prepy to be a mechanic.so... this is a couple years later, I decided to give you a nother chance and I was truly impressed. You did a awesome 👌 JOB
Just an FYI, the oil won’t just flow from the tank to the crankcase, atleast not very quickly. The engine has to either turn over or run so the oil pump will pull the oil into the engine. Great stuff btw. I myself am a very big fan of the 400’s, my channel is based solely on 400ex content pretty much. I’ve got a fully built 400, check out my xc ready walk around video if you’ve got time. It’s got everything from long travel suspension to a fully built motor.
Thank you for the info and wow, very similar looking design when you first glance at your bike; I'll check out the video! I waited a good 30 minutes and not a drop flowed into the engine; it might have cleared when starting it but I didn't want the crank to be dry for initial start up; a good bit of sludge came out of the lower line; the oil was nasty!

Mate it’s good for young blokes and older ones to do the research regardless of the plan, have ur manual ready and most of all don’t be afraid to give it a go! You get some big credit by including a few blews (ozzy for mistake) it shows us blokes that even you fuck up but don’t lay on the floor and soon. You get back on it, good on ya bud
I'm not a fan of sport quads, I've always liked old utility quads, bikes and trikes .I like how this project is organized, planned ahead .Laid out and smooth. Unlike mine where it's a mess from start to finish. I subbed , I like your work.
i just scored an 06 trx450er for 300 bucks. It being my first quad i've found this channel to be super informative and entertaining. I come from dirt bikes so i do have a decent bit of knowledge. but anything on the chassis or suspension i really dont know much about. But, from this channel i've gotten it running, done a parking brake block off, new levers and just general tidying up of things. It sat outside for 10 years and is pretty rough but thankfully it was all under a tree and is 100% bone stock down to the brake pads. I appreciate the knowledge mike :)
Since first time i seen it in 99, i was always love the 400ex. You made a crazy Nice one, you always do a good job, what a pleasure to watch your videos !!! Thank you Michael...

I have a 2007 EX that has taken me to 5 regional championships and one national. Love the EX. Two of my regional championships was in bone stock form. Then I rebuilt the whole thing leaving only the frame stock. Putting out 52HP at the rear wheel now after the rebuild. Motor was done by a local guy and has lasted 5 session's without a rebuild.
You build motors all the time but hey food for thought, make yourself a checklist to make sure these shitty days don't happen or for once you realize it's gonna be one of those days. Love the content brother!

Hey Mike if you want the air to flow freely into the airbox with the open top but yet keep it water friendly then think about applying a layer of Frogskin over the opening with some epoxy. I've used it on my 4x4 quad and it works great.
@@MichaelSabo what all my Xc racing buddies do is cut a large square in the air box (think like cutting a inch in from the outside of the lid all the way around) and then riveting foam into the inside of it. I’d say it works pretty good too cause one one of them is racing xc1 pro in gncc very successfully, and the other two are racing either pro or A at the Indiana and Midwest series very successfully. I would’ve never felt comfortable doing that before seeing them do it but they all swear by it.
I love your videos, i have watched a lot of them. One thing is the nut that was stuck on the hub that would not come off with a wrench. For that I usually would use an impact gun set up quite high and just blurted a few times usually comes off easier and then put it on properly. That's what I've done in a pass with stuck hubs, keep up the good work.

Damn Mike u killed that build bro! I swear you’re the king of cleaning parts and making em look brand new! Lol I’d be interested in buying it, how do I contact you?
No me lol
I appreciate that man. I am undecided what I will do with it; I'd like to do a give away with it but you can shoot me an email at michaelsabo350@gmail.com
@@MichaelSabo awesome 👍🏾
Our generation is notorious for torn rotator cuffs. Had my surgery last year I give you props on riding like that cuz it's seriously some shlty pain.
This thing is the ultimate oldschool build !! Awesome job on this one dude !
Thank you neel!
Damn!!! I have a 2001 400ex that i havnt ridden in like 4 years. I wish i could do something just like this! So awesome to see. Bike looks amazing! Great job. From MA
Easily the best rebuild page on RUclips
Wow, thank you for that!
Also love that you bring projects back to life
U did lot of work to it definitely came out nice 400ex are good bikes I had two of them when i was a kid fun times
I have watched alot of your old videos and just realized i wasnt subscribed so i just did i enjoy your content and seeing you turn worn out machines into sweet rides.
I just got one of these, I'm really happy because now I can keep up with my friends while riding
I watch all your content and enjoy each and everything you post . You have come a long way keep it coming
Dude, I cannot remember the last time I sat through an entire hour long RUclips video. Definitely earned my like and sub. Looking forward to more content from you.
Cant believe I watched this at 4 in the morning but great build sabo
I really like your graphics designs and how you let us know everything you change! Very informative
Michael, you are realist keeping in mind sharing tips and strategies on keep costs down while meet the goal.... incredible resurrection of a new ride. I came across your videos a couple years ago trying to help friend restore his Blaster and I been hooked ever since on what you have to show.
Recovery from surgery will take time to heal, but I am sure you will be coming up with some new ideas for future videos. Love that design for decals, very impressive.
I love this long format video. Not having to wait for the finished bike is awesome.
Man, you brought that thing back from the dead! It looks almost like new again! Great job man😎
This bike going to be awesome with all them new parts. Making me want another 400
i just scored an 06 trx450er for 300 bucks.
Sounds like an awesome resurrection man! I'm glad my videos could help you out 🤘
Funny intro Mike good stuff! 👍 Ur attention to detail is 2nd to none. Keep up great work. - Ohio
I appreciate that Dave!
I could watch these type of videos all day 👍🏻
Since first time i seen it in 99, i was always love the 400ex.
You made a crazy Nice one, you always do a good job, what a pleasure to watch your videos !!!
Thank you Michael...
Awesome comment, thank you man!
Detailing metal surfaces that had years of dirt and rust buildup is unbelievably satisfying.
I respect the amount of cleani g and refreshing you do to all the parts. Keep it up
1st time to watch a video of yours! Most excellent! Sending prayers for your rapid recovery! Looking forward to your future endeavors!
I just bought my 99’ 400ex 2 weekends ago and I’m so happy to fix it and get it running
Nice job Micheal that was very entertaining to watch.
bro this video peaked my interest from start to finish!!!!you have a amazing skill my man,i’m trying to learn how to rebuild top ends lol !!im def subscribed
Dude my son was so excited that you did the funny 🤣 intro me and my whole family really enjoyed it keep up the great content brother. Good luck on your surgery I will keep you in my 🙏
Andrew, always awesome hearing from you and it put a smile on my face reading that your son enjoyed it too. This reminds me, I need to go back through my email!
Hey dude! I'm a honda powersports tech and you did that old qaud justice that's awesome!
Just finished watching, once again, You Do Amazing Work!
Pro Linkage that looks like it would be awesome.
and thanks for showing that great case saver, (DRW Case Saver )I'm going to order 3 of them, 2 for our Honda 400's and one for the '91 Honda 250X
Keep up the Great Videos!
110K subscribers..WOW! Congratulations
One of the best videos, I've watched in a long time. Good job man 👍
Thank you Jerry!
Hey Mike if you want the air to flow freely into the airbox with the open top but yet keep it water friendly then think about applying a layer of Frogskin over the opening with some epoxy. I've used it on my 4x4 quad and it works great.
Definitely a good idea man! Thank you for the suggestion and for becoming a channel member 🤘
Been waiting awhile for this one! You did great! Good luck on your surgery
Awesome machine! The 400EX is always a good machine for trails. Another great vid!
Rich is good. Love The long format vids and not removing The mistakes, and making it seem too polished. Amateurs, and pros too, Make mistakes. That is where you learn.
Really addicted of these kind of videos! Keep it up!
I love how u do a start to finish build all in one video all these other RUclipsr do it in about 5 or more videos. The 426 it’s a badass build I have the same one but it’s a 2004 before the new body style with reverse came out and I love it
I love the vids man keep it up these types of videos of flipping old machines is so awesome
I use roll rubber roofing, cut a 1 inch wide strip and glue it to skid plate where it meets frame. Nice and quiet.
Me too
Dude ur a beast I'm on my 3rd-4th video can't stop watching the work the hard work and result is Redick
AWESOME BUILD.....My favorite part is the attention to detail and NOT editing out the whoops areas when you forget to put stuff in like oil pump geatr and timing tensioner. (makes me feel better about my rework steps lol
That skit at the start had me dying because i do be convinced someone took the spanner i left down and can't find 😂 small tip for the valve insert tool, lock it in a vice real tight and you can use both hands to work on installing the spring and that. Great video as always man 👍
Dude... thats a great idea putting it in the vise; I never thought of that!
Congrats man on the 80k basically lol 79k. Dude i get so hype to watch your vids, always learn tons of shit from you. I literally bought a 400ex because of your quadwarz series, and literally bought a 250r a couple weeks ago, I actually sent you it on insta. Love your content man, keep working hard. Your channel has grown so much over the last year its insane. 🤘😎
Always love your comments man; glad I could inspire you to get into a 400ex and 250R; send the message on IG again so it goes to the top of my inbox; I get killed with messages and it's hard to keep up!
@@MichaelSabo you replied to it a while ago. Everything on the R is going good. Just fixed the carb up. Was leaking gas like crazy, just cleaning up the oem white plastics.. getting the brown tinge out of them. Orderd some gbc's its gonna be a nice bike. Next is fullflight a arms
@@ttatvoffroad2632 sounds like it's coming together man! Don't forget to use my promo code if you order full flight; you get free stainless brake lines. The code is in the description
@@MichaelSabo holy shit man lol thanks dude. Didnt even know about that code hahaha
Nice build Mike! Isnt that aggravating as hell when you get something put together and then having to go back and tear it apart again….We’ve all been there brother
I'm going to have to say that your yard looks impeccable . Nice job on the quad , I also am a lover of all things dirt or anything with a motor !
