Been enjoying the videos man! Been a bike tech for over 30 years and it's nice to see a young man take pride in his work and do it right! Wanted to share my 400ex story quick. I found one in a shed once that wasn't being ridden at a fellows house I know. Looked brand new, just dusty. I asked him about it and he said he'd took it on a trade and something was wrong with the chain and swing arm. It cranked right up, ran perfect, looked like new, but the swing arm bearings were killed. It was a yellow 02 just like this one. Got it for $1200! Might be the best deal I've ever got on a bike! Anyways, got it home to the shop and looked it over real good, absolutely the only thing wrong was the swing arm bearings. Never understood why they went bad and the entire rest of the bike was like new. Wheel bearings, brakes, all that looked factory. Rode it about a year, my daughter really loved it and learned to use a clutch with it riding with me on it when she was like 7. I worked on a friends suzuki samurai one day and she went with me on a road test. She said she really liked the Samurai. A friend of mine the very next week saw the 400 and had a fit for it. He can find anything on marketplace or back then it was mainly craigslist. I told him if he could find me a Samurai that ran as good as the 400 I'd trade even, even if he got the sammy for $1. He found me a super nice 88 all original no rust and we traded. I still have the sammy and love it. Had to put rings in it eventually but its super nice and rust free. I still miss that 400ex sometimes. This one really brought it back. Holler if I can ever be of help man, I've had thousands of Honda, Yamaha, and Suzuki's apart and have probably just about seen it all LOL! Glad I found the channel man! Keep up the grind
Just a suggestion for your safety. Rig up a chain with a rope block and tackle with D ringsthe front end of the bed of the pickup. This will allow you to control the speed at whcih the machines roll out of the bed and make it much safer for you. it will also be useful if you need to pull something into the bed. Keep up the great work.
Or, stop pussy footing around and just let it roll out the bed without worrying about trying to slow it down its a quad. It will just roll out. Lol if UT was a bike, yea slow roll it out.
Those shocks should be amazing! They're super highly regarded in the superbike world- Not sure about offroad use but I always put ohlins on streetbikes and they ran really well!

@@pcostyle11 Oh man, if you happen to find a set of older original, genuine Ohlins shocks, pounce on them. They are a dream to ride on. And they can be revalved to your exact specifications.

...hey Joe, wishing a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year to you and family and most of all, thanks for all the mechanical tutoring that this gear head needs..
Have you ever considered stripping a machine and doing it up with everything and just keeping it for a personal quad? This seems like a good candidate seeing how you already have the motor almost ready to pull and the swingarm has to come off anyway it wouldent be that much extra work to powder coat the frame and throw a few extra parts at it and just keep it. Would be an awesome series and a good resource for anybody else doing it
I'll have to finish watching in a few hours. Have to repair my van before it gets dark. It's cold as Hell here too. I noticed, at the seller's garage, that there is an exhaust leak by the carb. Saw it blowing from the pipe, across the back of the engine, towards you. Hope there's no hole or crack. I know you can braze or weld it, but don't wish that extra burden on you. Good luck with it. Gonna finish watching as soon as I get back in and showered. Almost forgot... Whoop!
I can't imagine what the seller of this quad must be thinking after seeing your tear down of this engine except to believe he must be blown away with your expertise in your field of knowledge. Boring the stock cylinder is usually more reliable than using an aftermarket cylinder for a big bore kit. Lots of quality built atvs are big bore, but still indicate the stock cc as cast on the OEM cylinder
True that's why I'm really thinking about getting a wiseco high comp piston for my big bore 250ex but I also don't want it too through away the reliability and still make decent power.
That grab bar is called a six pack rack (made for a smaller playmate style cooler). Also Ohlins is on par with like Elka, Fox, etc...real good brand. You are supposed to get the shocks adjusted / tuned for the machine's weight, your weight, and your riding style to get the best out of them, there are suspension shops that do that type of work or you can order them that way.
Hey Joe; you may can straighten that steering stem. I had to do that on my little Warrior. Pulled it out, clamped it in the vise on my milling machine and pulled it with a long bar. Mine was so bad it bound up on each side, kinda like when when we were kids and rammed our bicycle front wheel into something immovable (like a parked car), and bent the fork tube up inside the neck. I had thought that was all that set the handlebars at an angle, but after LOTS of looking and measuring, and thinking I had a bent frame, found it had a bent swingarm. After ordering a replacement for that, I decided to try and straighten that too (what did I have to lose), and pulled that thing back out straight! What a learning exercise that was. Anyways, rock on and Merry Christmas to your wonderful family.
Joe, I love watching your videos!Pro tip tho would be to take a better look at the vehicles you buy because you can save money and avoid getting screwed over. You can say you can’t do x amount because of those issues and save some money. Use it on those tinier expenses like bolts, nuts, electrical, etc
You pronounced it right to my knowledge. OHLINS suspension is pretty awesome. More high end. I’m sure there is better and worse. Definitely good stuff. At least on street bikes (I don’t have much experience or knowledge of their off road stuff) but on road is pretty good. Also video can be deceptive only you would know , looked like you were having trouble getting it into third? Love the videos as always. Merry Christmas!
I like the way you break thing right down instead of band-aid fixes. I thought I saw left side was a weld repair. I guess we'll see when you go about fixing the engine mounts.
So it only needs a new ring and the piston is still good that is a big plus. Tapping out stripped out screws is doable just need new bolts I guess you can find those. The stem and the swing arm bushings is going to be a pain in arse. And it actually is a 440 big block. LOL thats is nice. Sounds like a 440 Dodge. Good luck with the broken exhuast bolts that part is nightmareish you will have to work your magic on that. Maybe swing arm bushings are not so bad to replace. I like the fact that it actually is a 440 bore and piston and they are OK exception of the rings you got a break there.
Great video. I can never understand how people let their equipment get so greasy and dirty making them a nightmare to work on and masking visable leak locations.
Just a suggestion For the cartridge oil filter,,,cut the paper element off ,,,it's going to look like an accordion paper,,,then open your bench vise and put the accordion paper element in the vise and squeeze all the oil out of the paper element,,then you will be able to see on the inside of the paper element for metal shavings,,,I've seen metal shavings on the inside of the paper element before on some engines,,,,it's just a suggestion,,,and thank you for your great videos they are awesome and educational 👍
Iam 55 and have been watching your RUclips channel for quite a while now have learned a lot from watching your channel keep up the good work Merry Christmas and happy holidays
If those are real ohlins they are very good. Looks like it may be Chinese rfy shocks with ohlins stickers. That white bros pipe is super valuable in the 400ex community
@@njmxjunkie3128 Both. About 15:18 when he's looking at the exhaust bolts you can see the front shock. The focus was a bit off. But you can clearly see sticker on the reservoir. And the cast portion of the body which connects to reservoir it says Ohlins. And yes they are good shocks. Set them up correctly and should be smooth
Öhlins suspension is considered among the best you can get (at least in europe), cant say for sure about that model and unless you are swedish the pronunciation is spot on ;)
It's needed more work than you first thought. Not good for you, but good content for us. Ohlins are a real premium shock. Surprising to see them on this. But a big selling point. Thanks for all the great content Joe. Wishing you and Jade a great Christmas.
The worst condition the atv's you buy are, the more I learn watching your videos. Such a great project and I can't wait to see you get the stripped bolts out. That is a real pain to do but I hope i'll see some tricks you use👍 You're garage floor is so nice. What is the floor made of?
You're like the Tyler Hoover of the ATV side of RUclips. If you get a good one that doesn't need a bunch of work, you can play with it right away and make content. If you get a project, you get content out of it by fixing it up on camera and then more content ripping it around on the land. You basically can't lose!
That 400 was my buddies and he traded for the yfz and there was nothing wrong with the yfz, all it needed was a gasket for the oil filter cap. That 400 was so clapped it needed all new bearings and all the tires where bald when he traded
You surprise me not having heard of Ohlins. They are the if not amonst the best shocks. All shocks wear out, when it comes to Ohlins, all you have to do is send them off to Ohlins and they refurb them to brand new spec at a nominal charge, and that keeps going. They are very expensive to buy new though, which is why. You do great and interesting work, I have only just caught up with you and am enjoying your videos a lot. thanks :)
There’s a very simple way to fix the weather….move!!! Lots of great places to live in the country with much better weather than the 5 state area. Will never move back there due to weather alone. Good luck with the quad….have really learned a lot- Thx!
Ohlins "Oh-leens pronunciation, btw" were top of the line back in the day. Came stock on Cannondale quads. My old Cannondale Speed 440 had the non-reservoir versions, the Moto came with the reservoirs. They are nice shocks.
Ohlins is excellent suspension company. They are found in almost every automotive and cycling disciplines. Ohlins USA is based in my hometown of Hendersonville NC. Almost all their components Can be rebuilt. Can’t go wrong with their product on any vehicle you buy.

Thanks for wrenching on all you do,. When I have a question about this or that quad I'm working on, I'll dig thru ur vids. Usually u have already covered it. Currently rebuilding an '86 250trx New top end. The two valve cover bolts on either side of cam where stripped out. Debris got under camshaft and dug out pits on cover and case. New case, new valve cover, new cam, new valves. Sadly it seems the guy that sold it to my buddy discovered this, then just sealed it back up with rvt and sold it.. smh shotty ppl suck. But it'll be correct after I'm finished with it. Merry Christmas all 🙏

Mine had same issue. I drilled tiny hole on choke lever to keep it pulled off so you only hold it to start it the let off never get forgot on either. Secondly she needs a valve lash bad and some gaskets the exhaust donuts. Then she'll rip. 440 big bore it and widening kit and shell really handle. I stuck with stock 450s all day and actually tore up the tight trails with more agility than most machines
I'm surprised you've never heard of Ohlins shocks. I'm a lot older than you so maybe that's why. You do get some really good deals on bikes and quads. Keep up the good work!!!
The cylinder will say 397 on the side but if you measure it,it will be 89mm,I can't understand why they still put 397 either,if you look at how thin the cylinder sleeve is it is a 440,the original cylinder sleeve is a lot thicker than that 1

Blows my mind how people have no idea how their power sports work. Who tf doesn’t know what a choke is?
Great video. I can never understand how people let their equipment get so greasy and dirty making them a nightmare to work on and masking visable leak locations.
Merry Christmas you make me able to support my hobby by myself thank you for all your videos
Merry Christmas. Thanks for keeping my attention and teaching me some tricks.
Yeah buddy it's definitely been a cold week
Iam 55 and have been watching your RUclips channel for quite a while now have learned a lot from watching your channel keep up the good work Merry Christmas and happy holidays
If those are real ohlins they are very good. Looks like it may be Chinese rfy shocks with ohlins stickers. That white bros pipe is super valuable in the 400ex community
White brothers pipes are very good on 400s and sounds so good
They are Ohlins shocks. Has the name cast where the reservoir connects
@@briankennedy5578 is it cast into it? Looked like a sticker I could be wrong tho
Nice video, we like a lot all your videos with vehicles buying, repairing and always never you know what is coming.
Öhlins suspension is considered among the best you can get (at least in europe), cant say for sure about that model and unless you are swedish the pronunciation is spot on ;)
lol how do u loose a battery… merry Christmas joe!!
It's needed more work than you first thought. Not good for you, but good content for us.
Ohlins are a real premium shock. Surprising to see them on this. But a big selling point.
Thanks for all the great content Joe. Wishing you and Jade a great Christmas.
Thanks for showing the difference between a professional mechanic and a just a guy trying to fix something :)
I'm glad you do these videos so I know never to buy a used machine, they always use the previous owner excuse
Ohlins are some of the best shockers made..top units.👍
You surprise me not having heard of Ohlins. They are the if not amonst the best shocks. All shocks wear out, when it comes to Ohlins, all you have to do is send them off to Ohlins and they refurb them to brand new spec at a nominal charge, and that keeps going. They are very expensive to buy new though, which is why. You do great and interesting work, I have only just caught up with you and am enjoying your videos a lot. thanks :)
Excited to see where this bike is heading. What awesome year it's been on your channel ! 🙏. Keep it up man.
When you watch 2vintage to fix your sons TTR and he’s watching a video to learn how to rebuild a 125 he’s ready to flip it for. Thank you
That set of Öhlins is definitely the best thing about it. Six pack rack is a close 2nd
There’s a very simple way to fix the weather….move!!! Lots of great places to live in the country with much better weather than the 5 state area. Will never move back there due to weather alone.
Good luck with the quad….have really learned a lot- Thx!
Keep up the good work and always posting with something new... Really dig what your doing
Ohlins "Oh-leens pronunciation, btw" were top of the line back in the day. Came stock on Cannondale quads. My old Cannondale Speed 440 had the non-reservoir versions, the Moto came with the reservoirs. They are nice shocks.
merry christmas joe!
Ohlins is excellent suspension company. They are found in almost every automotive and cycling disciplines. Ohlins USA is based in my hometown of Hendersonville NC. Almost all their components Can be rebuilt. Can’t go wrong with their product on any vehicle you buy.
Been watching since you for several years the content has got much better and you pump out new interesting videos ! Keep it up joe you will continuously grow !
Good luck getting that swing arm pivot bolt out lol, you may get lucky but they tend to weld themselves in pretty good
That's what heat is for
My brother's swin arm bolt on his KTM did the same exact thing and I used a Sawzall too cut it lol
@@dopeman420 can’t get stuck if it’s melted! Lol
Yeah unfortunately heat only does so much on the 400ex due to location, it’s a tough spot to heat. Most guys end up cutting the bolt out
Merry Christmas and thank you for all the videos. It is a joy watching your videos. Would love to meet you in person someday and shake your hand and say thank you. Some times things get hard in peoples life and sitting down and taking a break from life and watching your videos makes life so much easier and I thank you again for helping me get thru some tough times with your videos. Again Merry Christmas and have a happy and safe new year
Merry Christmas man
Thanks for wrenching on all you do,. When I have a question about this or that quad I'm working on, I'll dig thru ur vids. Usually u have already covered it.
Currently rebuilding an '86 250trx
New top end.
Merry Christmas all 🙏
Never realized how relaxing a engine teardown could be, miss my motorcycles , and working on them. ( 1990 SD) . Felt that -40 when you said that.
Like how you show the novices what to look for and how to fix. And " " look a gift horse in the mouth " and experience is wisdom. Never realized ATVs held value that long. The pooch makes the channel .
You remind us what we learn today could be useful one day, marry Xmas.
oh-lins, theyre swedish
probably the best shocks made..period
Mine had same issue. I drilled tiny hole on choke lever to keep it pulled off so you only hold it to start it the let off never get forgot on either. Secondly she needs a valve lash bad and some gaskets the exhaust donuts. Then she'll rip. 440 big bore it and widening kit and shell really handle. I stuck with stock 450s all day and actually tore up the tight trails with more agility than most machines
wow it said the in the wind was -28 here but man -40 thats crazy great video love the quad videos!
I'm surprised you've never heard of Ohlins shocks. I'm a lot older than you so maybe that's why. You do get some really good deals on bikes and quads. Keep up the good work!!!
Merry Christmas bro but holy shit I'm in Melbourne FL and its 31 out and I'm freezing
The cylinder will say 397 on the side but if you measure it,it will be 89mm,I can't understand why they still put 397 either,if you look at how thin the cylinder sleeve is it is a 440,the original cylinder sleeve is a lot thicker than that 1
It's probably previously been stated but Ohlin has been making aftermarket suspension components for decades and yes, they are good.
Think you freek Vinny out when you start talking to the camera...he thinks your going crazy talking to thin air...bless him...great vids. I watch them all. Keep up the fantastic content...happy holidays to you and yours .
Ohlins possibly the best suspension money can buy 👌 all the sport top spec ducati's have um 👍 sounds just like my xr400 always make me smile when the just tick over plodding ❤✌🇬🇧😘
