On the tapping sounds, you gotta remember the 400ex is Hondas RFVC design, each valve has 2 rocker arms, a main rocker and as sub rocker, There are more contact points of cleareance which increases the sound from the valve train.

Another thing to check for when buying a used 400ex is swing arm bushing and bolt this is a common wear spot and if there worn bad enough you will have to replace the swing arm also I had to replace the swing arm on mine and did one for a friend another friend got lucky and only had to replace the bolt and bushing. The bolt will wear so bad that to have to cut it where the swing arm mounts to the motor. Other than that and the rear axle carrier bearing the 400ex is an awesome quad super reliable and affordable love the low end torque they climb like a tractor

You did a good job man I use this same guide for when I buy a 400. I also check the carrier, a arm bushings and ball joints, wheel bearings and stuff like that as well. I'll add the cost to fix the quad to the asking price to find out how much money I'm spending on it. I don't always look at what they ask for it, I look at how much money the quad will cost me by the time everything is fixed up. I use that strategy for when I buy a quad. But good vid man!

Alot to help you with here bud. First. Check where the front sprocket is. Remove the factory case saver. If it slings a chain it will crack the case there. That will also give you an idea of how it was taken care of at the sametime. The tick- isnt timing chain. Its half the auto decompression mechanism other half is the secondary rocker arms in the valve cover. (Normal sound)The oil leak- put copper spray on the valve cover gasket. Problem solved. You checked the oil completely wrong. Check the manual. You have the oil way over full if it reads half without running the quad. It should read full after quad has warmed up at idle without throttle blipping. I missed alot of things you said that was wrong. Not bashing you in anyway here. Just passing on info. Take care! FYI the reason that you have all that noise from the timing chain is tensioner Honda is notorious for the automatic tensioner tends to move and sometimes kills quads because the chain will jump which is when I always get a Honda no matter it's the rocket or dirt bike or four wheeler is a manual timing chain tensioner saves me from having to rebuild the head a few weeks or a month after I start riding it I ride mine every day

Hey so I used a hole saw kit and bored a hole smaller than the housing of the key and lights. Then used a file to create a tight fit. They key is tough so you make need to use a super glue or bonding agent of some sort when you get it in place. This lasted about 2 years and then the plastic wore out so now I am making a metal bracket to mount between the bar clamps and the steering stem.

I really want a 400ex. I've been looking for 2 years now and I'm kind of hooked on them. I'm 15 and my job has paid me 200 dollars since March, which obviously isn't enough to buy a 400ex. When I get a minimum wage job, (ours is $9.45 an hour) how long do you think it'll take for me to finally get one?
Edit: Your garage looks absolutely amazing with that many quads in there! Literally a dream of mine to own, maintain, and ride a 400ex. This might sound stupid to ask, but does it feel good to own a fast quad? Lol

We've always had 4 or 5 ATV's at one time ourselves. I currently have a 1987 Honda TRX250X that I bought 'new in the crate' from a dealer in 88'. I had them put a Cycle Country 42" sidewalk snow plow on for a total of $2600. I have my dad's 1989 Yamaha 350 Big Bear (our only 4x4), a 2004 Honda 250 Recon, and last summer I bought a really nice 2008 Honda TRX400EX. A buddy of mine bought the 400EX around 2013 just to ride around his yard.... which he hardly did due to living in town. This thing had awesome plastics, and the factory battery and tires. The only mod was a aftermarket pipe. The battery had to be jumped for the 3 or 4 times I saw him ride it. When my bud retired and moved out of state, he left the 400EX to his son.... who also never rode it. He was more into his car projects. One day he needed $1600 cash and wanted the garage space. I made a deal with him where he got the cash and he could ride the bike at my farm if he ever wanted to. I put a new battery and plug in it that night and moved it up to my farm. The funny thing is that most of my ATV time these days are spent on the Big Bear hauling hay bales or working on the pasture fence line. I'm just about ready to put the plow back on the 87' 250X for the 32nd year to have it ready for snow.
