The things that really stands out in Get Back, and separates the Beatles from other groups, their genius, their musical talent, their sense of humor and Kevin's ability to make tea.

I lived in Manhattan at the time John died. Yes, I was sad and shocked. I was working at a daily newspaper, NewsWorld at that time. I was driving a delivery van up north to get the bundles of papers for newstands early one morning in 1977 when on the radio I heard Elvis had died. Tying the two together, I think that John said "before there was Elvis there was nothing." I didn't deliver the upper Westside where John lived, but my co-workers who did, said that they talked to John just walking free on the sidewalks up there. He was very friendly. I remember, myself, seeing a skywriting plane above Manhattan one day said: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SEAN. I would say that my favorite song of his would be one when he and Paul wrote together . . . and even so I like all of them so much, I can't pick a favorite.

"Love" is quite possibly my favorite Lennon tune. I listened to it in earnest for the first time the day after he was murdered. John had this unique ability to take a simple melody and couple it with a profound lyric. It took on a much deeper meaning for me after his death and sticks with me to this day.

This seems like the place and time to share this with y'all again… I moved to NYC from a small town in Indiana in 1977 to go to Art School. When I first moved here I lived on West 79th Street and West End Avenue. The school I attended at that time was at Columbus Circle, 61st and Broadway (it happens to be the old Elektra Studios building). I had an 8:00 class and because I didn’t have much money I would walk to school whenever possible. So it was a nice September day and I was walking down Broadway around 7:30 in the AM. …Now you must remember I had been in NYC about a month from Small Town, Indiana… As I’m walking down a mostly deserted street I see a couple staggering up the street towards me. This guy was hanging on his lady, obviously walking something off after a long night. As they get closer they start looking very familiar but I just could not place them. They Shuffle past me not two feet away and as they pass I think to myself “If I didn’t know better I would swear that is John Lennon and Yoko Ono!?”. Then it hits me that it IS John Lennon and Yoko Ono! I am in The Big Apple at 72nd Street and Broadway not in Indiana any more! I stop and stare as they stagger up the block a bit. Then they stop at The New Yorker movie theater to look at the pictures in the window. I was staring at John & Yoko looking at the stills of the movie "New York, New York" starring Liza Minnelli that was playing at The New Yorker Movie Theater on Broadway and 72nd Street! What a consummate New York Moment! Then they turn and start walking towards me again. I think to myself I GOTTA say something this time, but what? I didn’t want to be an ass. What could I say? But then Yoko realizes that I recognized them and steers John diagonally across Broadway, East, towards The Dakota Building where they lived, to avoid any contact. So, I narrowly missed saying hello to John Lennon and perhaps shaking his hand. Still… a day I will never forget!
By the way… I think that the new Beatles "Get Back" movie(s) are FANTASTIC! Watching their creative process in action is incredible!

Thank you, Kevin Harrington. I announced that John Lennon had been shot as I worked a late evening radio shift, alone, playing rock, on WDAV-FM, Davidson College, in North Carolina. "DAV" was a 20,000 watt station then and our signal reached Charlotte, Ashville, and Statesville. A listener phoned in the news. I didn't know how to handle this. At the next break, I announced John Lennon's death. I think I explained how it happened. I played his song Imagine. I remember being in disbelief that Lennon died in a crime. I still can't believe it.

Kevin...thank you for sharing. Otis, thank you for bringing Kevin to us. There's too many Lennon songs to be able to name just ONE favorite. I've always loved the intensity of his singing in "When I Get Home" and in "I Call Your Name" that middle "reggae" (offbeat) part added to give the song a bit of a twist. I feel the same way about "Tomorrow Never Knows"....just the one chord throughout, and Ringo's steady beat...but just so damn creative. "Julia", "Beautiful Boy" and "Grow Old With Me"....just break my heart. John was such a tough guy on the outside, but had so much compassion. I miss his compassion so much these days. The world needs so much more compassion these days. Dig, DmGrk

I bought Kevin’s signed book a few years back never really having heard of him within the Beatles back story. I read it but was a little skeptical of his part within the scheme of things as I was still convinced that if he had played the part that he had claimed to then he would be as well know to Beatles nerds as Mal or Neil……
So these last few weeks it’s been great to have been proven wrong to myself and that he indeed was right in the thick of it all as he said he was…….

Official documentaries are often filled with the expected blah, blah, blah. These seemingly insignificant events really give you a picture of what these legends were really like.

Happy Christmas, and Give Peace a Chance are my faves. The fact he bothered to write simple songs everyone could sing, songs that were in the collective psyche (sp?) was one of his greatest achievements, imo.
    Thanks Kevin and Otis.

I reckon Kevin is the red haired guy we see in the Get Back movie. I must listen to this over again because he is a bit difficult to understand.
There are many John favs but no one here has mentioned The Ballad of John and Yoko. Great song with that typical 3+3+2 subdivision that they also used on some other tunes - for example in the verse on Don't let me down - and that really makes the song swing. It's the same as 1.5+1.5+1 if you talk quavers in 4/4 time because it's like jazz waltz the first three beats, then a straight beat. The lyrics on that song are also quite entertaining.
I also have a soft spot for Tell me why, from A hard days night, where John sings his heart out. Among others

Great stories. Always great. My mom took us to Spain and I bought the White album. It had been opened by the government and the lyrics were removed. I was told by the record store they were removed because Franco didn't want the words to Revolution in print... the song itself was allowed, but no words....

@@darrelmorgan6266 1970 i was in Spain,,,i remember being in a bar and AMERICAN PIE was playing in the bar. When the verse ' 'the three men i admired most,,the father , son and holy ghost. was played , the father, son and holy ghost was 'bleaked' out on the record !! of course,,every time it was played in bars in Spain,,everyone would shout out those verses !! too funny.

So you didn't get the nice poster with lyrics on the reverse. There should have been a class action suit against the government, for whatever some shark lawyer could devise: property damage, illegal search and seizure...something! I remember hearing "Christ" bleeped out on "Ballad of John and Yoko." All so ridiculous.

It never seems like Xmas to me until I hear And So this is Christmas on the radio-not on you tube but just appearing on the radio to shake me into the spirit. If I'm not hearing it on the radio I'll call up my favorite Austin Public station and request it. Its not the same because I forced the isue-hearing it in a natural setting works best for me. The song was new when I was a teen with my first car and it was in heavy rotation.
Favorite Lennon: In My Life, Tomorrow Never Knows, Crippled Inside, Well Well Well (only Anna and Twist and Shout top that vocal performance

In the news paper archives I came across a Vancouver BC No# 9 Beatnik Coffee House article - I think it was about 1959. I googled for more info and sure enough there it was. When I saw it I thought of John & the Beatles. Worth a look.
