It really is something The Beatles should be ashamed of. Mal was always reliable and there for them. There were a few times he went on vacations with The Beatles, including when it was only Mal and Paul vacationing at an African safari. It makes no sense that they sometimes treated him like a real friend and other times heavily took him for granted.
I don't doubt he contributed lyric ideas once in awhile. He was around them so often.

They also I believe didn’t go to Stuart Sutcliffe, Brian Epstein or a few other funerals. Certainly the Epstein family didn’t want them there as it would potential turn into a sideshow. That could be the reason for not attending other funerals. Sure I read that GH gave his family money following Mal’s death.

He also gave his opinion and input into a few words of The Lyrics Long and Winding Road. But mainly he was their roadie, and all around gopher who took care of their needs. For instance, he took care of hiring the coach/bus for the Magical Mystery Tour movie. He was also quick with the pen, jotting down lyrics that John and Paul or George were dictating to him. Unfortunately for Mal, his devotion to them went far deeper than their devotion to him as a friend and former employee.

Mal Evans was one of the two witnesses at Paul and Linda's Wedding in 1969. The other was Paul's brother Mike. Mal tried to be the same support to Badfinger, even producing at least one of their tracks, but manager Bill Collins did not like him and made him sever his links with the band in a rather sordid fashion. In 1976, when he shut himself in a room, he had a girl (possibly his girlfriend) and her small child with him. The police said they had to protect the girl and child, thinking they were in danger which is why they opened fire. Mal's friends describe him as a gentle giant and he was clearly one of the nice guys of the entertainment industry. What a terrible shame he was not looked after better by the industry he clearly loved so much.

I believe that Mal contributed the line "watching her eyes" to Here, There and Everywhere". And because of Paul mishearing Mal say salt and pepper as Sgt. Pepper we got a title for one of the most famous albums in history. I read that Mal helped Paul with some lyrics to that album and asked if he would get any songwriting credits. Paul responded by saying something like the Lennon/McCartney songwriting team credit was so important that he didn't want to change it but that he would be compensated. I don't know if that happened or not. Either bit.

Firstly thanks for taking the time to do this video. Much appreciated. Yes. Dear Mal . A faithful friend really of all of the guys as well as an employee in a sense but that was pretty blurred. Thanks for bringing this into the light. I always thought about Mal too. Being ‘one’ of the fans reading and following everything. I wasn’t aware that nobody cared to be around for Mal at his funeral. John would have been closest at the time not that this gives the others an excuse. Very poor reaction and cold for a person who had gotten them out of many a tight problem and driven them all night to different locations without a complaint. Been there for them to set up and take care of trouble. I think his downfall was probably because they neglected him after the breakup. Any one of them could have taken Mal on in some capacity and given Mal the opportunity to decline if he had wanted something else. Many thanks for your work. Cheers Colin ,Cairns 🇦🇺

Excellent video presentation and truly tragic. Mal Evans was the Beatles right hand, tour/stage manager, go-fer, and trusted bodyguard for the better part of a decade. Mal was a gentle giant that should have been put out to pasture with a comfortable pension for the rest of his days, not "Mal"- treated this way. Listen to how many times one of the fab four yells out for "Mal" during the Get Back film. For a cup of tea, or some other banal thing, like he was their literal servant... Nowadays you'd never see a big celebrity ordering around their stage manager or tech for a cup of tea!
I rarely hear anything that tarnishes my opinion of the Beatles, but this shameful story surely does - big-time!

Happy New Year Jeff & greetings from Maryland.
This is eye opening - I think less of the Beatles after hearing this sad ending of Mal Evans - They really should’ve treated their old hometown boy better; this guy kept the 4 moptops safe, probably kept them fed, drugged, set up gear - boo, boys - wrong, immoral, you should’ve paid him appropriately, and should’ve paid him WAY more than £38/week. This is approximately the equivalent of $288 USD in today’s money (2022), that’s so wrong. That’s disgusting. So much for “peace and love“ with regards to one of your closest teammates and probably, friends. Sure, the Beatles were businessman, that’s why they have survived and lasted as long as they have. And sure, Mr. Evans could have used his clout as a Beatles staffer and capitalized on that name value, but maybe he was more of a simple bloke and chose not to cash in, and give away the lads’ secrets and private information? Anyway, I’m very disappointed by the Beatles treatment of Mal, this does say a lot about their character I believe.
Did Mal have anything to do with leaking the Beatles’ demos etc for those bootleg releases in the 1970s-80s?

Good video. I came to this after briefly checking out interview with Mal Evans' son and Evans' biographer, the book of which was just released. I stopped watching the interviews (You Can't Unhear This) because it became obvious everything is being interpreted through rose-colored glasses. A shame the Beatles never game him a raise and let him fall off the edge with no income, then make bad jokes about his death. His death was always reported as happening by being killed by cops, with no context or details. Thanks for the details.

We loved their music and they were great ….but like Julian Lennon inferred about his Dad he was not a nice person to his own son … he attend Mal’s funeral .. joked about Brian Epstein after he died .. belittled George about his song writing.. walked out on the group without negotiating anything.. abusing Paul in public… unfaithful to both wives ..

      Paul’s family were poor
During his identity development years 13-17 he went to Liverpool Institute
      The best school in Liverpool
He saw it as a step out of his lower socioeconomic substratum and his sense that he was not good enough
Yet he was not necessarily studious
So the internal conflict is set up. Maybe he was thinking-
How can I be upwardly mobile while I’m not studious or inclined to be a professional ? Am I a failure compared the other kids at Liverpool institute ? My classmates will go on and up ??
      Then he meets John
      “Uppermost to the toppermost Johnny”
      -: they would chant
That’s where we are going Paul wanted to think
They just wanted to get up and out of their Liverpool identity-ultimately on their terms -
You could call it overkill by Paul ever since
He’s never stopped producing music and seeking recognition for producing music even though since John left him he can’t quite get it back to the same heights as before .
Maybe he’s still fighting the identity of the council-flat origin today

well, nobody's perfect. oh wait, i am. and i didn't attend mal's funeral either.
lennon had a biting, sardonic wit about him. he didn't take crap from anyone and he'd attack unmercifully if provoked. even if that provocation was only in his own mind. a lot of it was intended to be humorous. but misunderstood. he could, also, be extremely kind and generous too.
so, don't give too much credence to stories about how harsh some famous people are. they are, after all, only human. famous people have bad days too.

According to the first full-length biography of Mal Evans, by Ken Womack _Living the Beatles’ Legend: The Untold Story of Mal Evans_ the weapon Evans pointed at police was not an air rifle at all, but a real 'Winchester' -with one live round in the chamber. It was a gift from his girlfriend, given the previous March.

From his writings, he was close to the Beatles but maybe that was only in his head. I believe he was close to the Beatles but unlike how the Rolling Stones treated Ian Stewart who was a founding member and became a roadie with much love, the Beatles were not so generous. 38 pounds a week does not sound like a lot even then but I'd like to think he at least got some free food, drinks, hotel, and the occasional straggler groupie. George Harrison seems to be the only one who can be counted upon to help. Paul seemed like a tightwad. Had he live long enough Mal Evans has memorabilia that would have made him financially secure. RIP

Actually, if you look at current rates of 38 pounds per week, Evans would have made almost $50000 a year in today's money in 1962. Assuming no raise, he would have made about $40000 a year by 1968. Yes, the Beatles made a fortune, but it wasn't like he was paid pennies. Minimally, he should have received a raise, but assume he got a lot of free meals, drinks, and travel throughout his time with Beatles. If so, he should have gotten by alright and enjoyed multi-year run with the most famous band of all time. I imagine it was tough on him though after that was all over.

John once said you had to be a bastard to make it in the entertainment business and the Beatles were the biggest bastards of them all. I sort of wrote that off as John being John after the breakup but given the treatment Mal received I get the sense there was an element of truth in that. No raise in all that time? Not one of them showed up for his funeral? Kind of Keith Richards and Mick Jagger skipping Brian Jones funeral. That's kind of a bastard move as well. I saw this documentary where this guy claimed George wanted to send some goons down to Mexico to break this guy's legs when he found out he had purchased a guitar that had been stolen from him. The guy didn't know it was stolen and he wanted two signed guitars in exchange for it and I guess George thought the hell with that, we'll force him to give it back. The guy said he thought George was joking but George told him no, they knew people who did that sort of thing. I thought maybe the guy was embellishing but who knows. So much for Hare Krishna, mantras, peace, and all you need is love.
I used to deal with people who had money and for the most part they were selfish SOB's you had to fight for every dime. Then again, I guess that's how you get rich isn't it? I suppose Cynthia would back up the bastard claim, at least where John was concerned. RIP Mal, maybe you should have just printed a tell-all in the early 70s and made a bundle. But then again, according to your son that wasn't your speed. You kept your honor.
