The Song That Made Paul McCartney Cry

  • After the beatles break up, the occasional meetings between Lennon and McCartney were overshadowed by constant arguments and attacks that marked an enmity that forever separated the most successful songwriting partnership of the 20th century, the problems had existed since 1965 but the height of the rivalry marked a rift in the friendship that could never fully heal. McCartney over the years in a diplomatic way said that they ended well, but what is a fact is that this brotherly relationship was never the same again, after the beatles break up they met again a couple of times, in 1974 they recorded a jam session with friends, and in 1976 they almost made a surprise appearance on Saturday night live, but in the end nothing happened. After that, there were only phone calls every few months and a meeting that was cancelled by Yoko. Lennon said goodbye to Paul saying: "think about me every now and then, my old friend..."

Paul and John were so close for so many years. When Lennon was shot, it's quite possible that Paul knew he couldn't talk to the press without breaking up, so he avoided them. The press is often too aggressive with people as well known as the Beatles.

The song that really made McCartney cry was John Lennon's "Beautifiul Boy". In a televised interview for BBC Radio's "Desert Island Disks", he selected the song and visibly broke down as it played, folding his arms, biting his lip, looking away from the camera, and swaying from side to side in his chair until the the camera panned away to spare his embarrassment. The song includes the words "every day, in every way, it's getting better and better", which were Lennon's last words to McCartney not long before he was murdered.

He had to process it first or ask the other Beatles first. Imagine yourself being asked, shoved microphones on your face asking you what can you say about your dad or your husband’s sudden death. It was sudden. It’s hard to process and accept that it’s true. It’s real. They had bitter split but they love each other. Good grief! These people are in shock, with loved ones seriously harmed or killed. They do not need microphones in their faces, nor do they need strangers asking ridiculous questions. Example: None of the Beatles's wives were not ever allowed in their recording studio while they were recording their songs. Ringo Starr's wife and Paul McCartney's wife understood the importance of that rule but not Yoko. She demanded to sit in on their recording sessions right next to John Lennon and would openly critique what she thought was wrong with a particular song and often disrupted the Beatles sessions. There was an incident when John Lennon tried to make her stay home while the band was recording Abby Road. But she got so angry that she actually tied herself to a fence that was near the studio and screamed, causing so much disruption to the whole area until John had to let her inside the studio. Eventually her shameful and shameless behavior caused serious descention among the other members of the band, especially Paul McCartney and Richard Starkey that they parted ways and broke up forever. She also isolated him from his son, Julian and family. She was a very controlling and disgraceful woman who not many people like to this day. I never liked her. Lorne repeated the offer on air and they all hopped in a car to go down there. But they got lost and went back to the apartment. Beatles stories seem to be like that - they change as to who is telling them.
But it was at the time of the Saturday Night Live show offer when they were getting all kinds of offers. They had insisted they would NOT do it just for money. According to the Beatles promoter, Sid Bernstein, John considered the latter offer then changed his mind. Paul wanted to do the 1969 shows because he felt the Beatles had lost their audience, but did not want to do the 1976 shows (not surprising as he was doing tours with Wings). I'm not really one of those "Do you remember where you were" kind of people, with the exception of the death of John Lennon. I was a teenager at the time, and was extremely into everything Beatles. I was asleep (half asleep anyway) laying in bed with the radio playing, and it came on the radio, which caused me to immediately shoot awake. I can remember the entire day was spent in disbelief. I spent the next days, and weeks searching for every article/ story about the event I could find. His death just really hit me hard.

They were fine...this intense rivalry everyone talks about only lasted a couple of years. They only met up a few times after not because of any animosity, but because they both had other priorities. Their families, their own careers. It's like moving out of your parents house. Its not like you feel any less about your brothers and sisters, but youre obviously not going to see them as often anymore. Paul and John were just as close as ever when they almost appeared on SNL, they just had other things going on. Me and my husband had to tell one of his friends that hes had since high school to stop just turning up at our door and to call first because well, WE WERE MARRIED and sometimes dont want him randomly there or god forbid while were in the middle of some...marital times. John had a baby that he was taking care of full time, something that he wasnt used too doing and that he was trying to make up for failing at in his past. Its perfectly understandable to want him to call first. there wasnt any really big rift here, just two friends growing up.

It brought me to tears that the last words John ever spoke to Paul ended up as a line in Perkin's song. It was meant to be. It was John reaching out to Paul from beyond. The words spoken between John/Paul, and then ending up in hands of their beloved icon, was what is known as a synchronicity (and a STRONG one!). As short at it is this is a good summation of the relationship between John and Paul after the Beatles split. They were never able to get back to the friendship they'd had. It was perhaps the biggest price they paid for the fame and success they'd had (it was even sadder between Paul and George). But there was always love there. Hard for either to express but they had it.

"Some guy turns up at the door". Some guy, huh? Lennon was a sob, but I have to think that Yoko was worried Paul was stealing John away and planted that bad seed. Paul was on top of the music scene while John was absent. So Paul was probably stopping by for charitable reasons as I'm sure he was concerned about John's mental state. And he had good reason to be concerned wondering how John was dealing with Yoko's mind games.

I think McCartney just wanted to get him a little more enthusiastic about music. Plus, he genuinely cared about him. After college, a good friend of mine became Yoko Ono's art-assistant for quite a long while, and another was her music-manager. The first thing he was relating to me was that if I kept grieving I would be helping to bind him to the earth where he didn't belong anymore. He had to grow in death just as in life. I know now there are different levels in death as there are in life. Then I heard the music....... Death means " so long" it don't mean I'm gone. Death is * so long* but it don't mean I'm gone.
