Welcome to another episode of Challenger Approaching! In this series, we discuss characters who could find their way into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or future entries, then go into ludicrous detail on what they would be like if they joined the fight for real!
This time, we're taking a closer look at a duo who got a lot of attention leading up to Ultimate's original release. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 continued its series' rise to fame, and its dual protagonists of the Salvager-turned-Driver Rex and his Blade companion Pyra were widely considered frontrunners to join Smash. But things did not line up as many expected or hoped, and Rex and Pyra, as it turned out, were a little too late to make the base roster...and the first wave of DLC already had other plans.
But what if the now-confirmed second Fighters Pass found a way to give these two--and their still very significant support base--a second chance? How could their signature abilities translate into a unique Smash moveset that'd resonate with anyone interested in them? Let's take a look.

Delzethin is an excellent example of someone I can respect even when I disagree with them. It is clear our taste in video games and characters differs greatly, yet his methodical methods are ones I can't knock. He's my most-trusted Smash analyzer, and I always appreciate his character concepts, even when they aren't for characters I'm interested in.

This is my absolute most wanted fighter. I really hope they get in Fighter Pass 2, but my hopes are pretty low at this point.
EDIT: Honestly, I’m not the biggest fan of this moveset. Affinity as a gimmick seems really unfun for a smash character, and a nightmare for free-for-all’s, which, understandably, the Smash team primarily develops for.
It’s still really well put together though.

I think it would be better if Pyra was in the background, still give you buffs but now it gives you a focus on surviving rather than keeping track of both Pyra and yourself

This is amazing. Some things I’d change would be the ‘Down B’ switching Pyra to Mythra which changes their moves. The final smash could be Rex and Pneuma using Infinity Blade

God I want these two in Smash so much. I really hope they are in Fighters Pass Volume 2.
Edit: I would change down b to a blade switch which would allow the player to use Mythra. And I would have both her and Pyra be in the background on stage just like Pokémon Trainer. The tether that connects them would still be present and work just like it does in Xenoblade 2. I think for the blade specials own Pyra/Mythra should magically teleport beside Rex to perform those attacks. (The little effect that appears whenever you switch between blades can appear when Pyra/Mythra leaves Rex or goes to him).

One thing to add: stage choice.
I considered Gormott, but that would be too similar to Gaur Plains. So I would go with Gramps the Titan, when he was still Rex's vessel (you fight on his back and swim in the Cloud Sea)

I would probably have Pyra stand in the back like Pokemon Trainer. In Xenoblade 2, no enemies can target your blades (with the exception of the arts that inflict Shackle Blade)

@@cesars.9912 counterpoint: Rex and Pyra aren't playable in Torna (well, technically Pyra is, but she also doesn't exist during the story until the very end)
1. I'd rather have Pyra off to the side like Pokémon Trainer so you don't have to defend an AI non-fighter.
2. You have to include Mythra! Just set down B as a blade switch between Pyra and Mythra where they give different damage and knockback stats. They have the same moveset in XC2 even.
I havent played xenoblade 2, but wouldnt the addition of Mythra a game spoiler?

@@JK-yg1gf Mythra appears before halfway through the game and in a ton of official art, and the game trailers all show her existence. She's not considered a spoiler by the Xenoblade community for that reason.

I really love this take on Rex! Especially the affinity and blade specials. There's only 2 changes I would prefer:
1. Have neutral b be a blade swap from Pyra to Mythra. The two would have different properties. Pyra's sword attacks would do flame damage like Roy and would be multi-hit, she would do more overall damage compared to Mythra. Whereas Mythra would have clean one-hit attacks similar to Shulk and her sword would be bigger and have more range, it would also do more knockback. To balance this out, the effects of both blades won't be very pronounced until you start to gain more affinity. I would switch double spin slash and make it his side b rather than up b, as up b would be the anchor shot. Rolling smash can be his f smash instead.
2. I would have Pyra/Mythra being on the background of the stage, kinda like Pokemon Trainer. Pyra/Mythra will follow where Rex goes to charge his affinity over time. However, since the 2 of them are in the background they can't go off-stage. This means that Rex would be more fierce some on-stage rather than off-stage.
My Most Wanted Xeno Character for Smash that is actually possible (If you include Impossible, I choose Fei):
1) KOS-MOS
2) Rex and Pyra
3) Elma
dekaidoku my fav. Is also Elma (or just cross straight up)
Jin is another interesting option, with or without Lora

I'm glad that they ended up actually getting a second chance, even thought Rex isn't the fighter, he'll be with her. I love Pyra's/Mythra's inclusion, they finally got what they deserved.
Also Rex and Mythra could an echo fighter, down-b and final will change of course, however I don't know what else.
Just looking at your interpretation of Rex & Pyra makes me want them even more. I mean, who know? People are still demanding for them to be in, so they could get that second chance. Here's to hoping.
If I learned anything from Smash 4's DLC (Inkling and K. Rool didn't become DLC fighters after their post-launch Mii costumes came out), Rex & Pyra's chances are done for in this game.

This is my Most wanted newcomer and Xenoblade 2 is my most FAVORITE switch game. Was my first xeno series game and now i cant wait for the Xenoblade 1 remake on switch.

I love how excited you get when explaining these move sets. Very enjoyable! Here is to hoping Rex and Pyra get the love they deserve! I think having alts that swap Mythra for Pyra would be neat as well!
Triom but lets make that a quintet with Mythra (considering Mythra is /not/ a spoiler and was in trailers and thus, someone they wanted the players to know about before the game came out) and spoiler.

But yeah, personally I would've swapped Anchor Shot to up-b as Rex uses that to get back to solid ground when salvaging, you could still have it be used side-ways as well by simply aiming it. Then side-b being double spinning edge while neutral b would be blade swap, specifically into Mythra.
Then uh... the FS being *spoiler* because Sakurai has shown he... really doesn't care about not spoiling games in Smash.
But honestly I'd be fine with this... as long as Mythra was present too. You can't have one without the other when it comes to Pyra and Mythra. Literally.
It’s a great video I love your ideas I personally would like to see a blade switch idea even with only mythra. I understand where you stand but I feel it feels like the game more thank you for your hard work
I think instead of a Pyra/Mythra switch like everyone is suggesting I’m hoping that if they got in that he’d have a bunch of blades that don’t have the same specials, with blades such as Roc or Wulfric being added. I also think it should be a more Pokémon trainer style mechanic, which would fit the character a lot better than an ice climbers one.
Also he has a 3 hit jab combo in the game which could be used to pay homage to it. F tilt could be like the hit he makes after using Anchor-shot in the game. I think Swordbash could also be used as a forward smash, being stronger if it hits from behind. Double spinning edge would work as a good downsmash.
Rolling smash would probably send Rex straight down in the air like to how backslash does to Shulk because of his animation when doing the move.
I’m just worried what Rex will do during specials and how they’ll target the opponent, and he should have something over his UI showing what level specials he’s on.

If Byleth whose game came out in 2019 and ARMS who barely missed the cut like Rex and Pyra got in then i feel at this point i would be real upset now if we didn't see them make it into the game this pass.

You're content is really well done, but holy hell the melodrama you have for each character sets the wrong tone. I get that you weren't personally satisfied with the DLC picks so far but it's definitely worth looking forward at this point.

God I hope Rex and Pyra make it. They’re my most wanted newcomers and I don’t care if Rex is another anime sword fighter, as he’d be unique. There’s also the fact that Byleth made it in, and as much as I love him, I won’t deny that it’s pretty unfair how Rex couldn’t get in for being too new yet Byleth made it in whose game was released after XC2, granted it’s likely much easier to include newer characters as DLC than in the base game since the main focus is on the DLC.
That's because Sakurai doesn't have a sexual fetish for Xenoblade like he does for Fire Emblem.
Daniel Lopes Lima Firstly, that’s not true. Sakurai said he believes there are too many FE characters. Secondly, Nintendo chose the DLC, not Sakurai. Thirdly, Sakurai stated he wanted to add in Rex but couldn’t since the timing didn’t work out so he was given a Mii costume instead

I really hope Rex and Pyra get into smash ultimate as fighters. I was so depressed when the rex mii happened but with Byleth and Now ARMS happening and Fighters pass 2, i hope this is their time to break out and become fighters. At this point i would be so upset if they didn't make the cut now since ARMS got in despite barely missing the cut for the same reason as Rex and Pyra. I am really hoping Rex and Pyra are DLC in this pass.
Yeah, it would be really disappointing if a game mostly considered as mediocre got another chance but not a hidden gem like XC2.

There's a chance that Rex & Pyra won't make it to the next Smash game when Xenoblade 3 comes out, though Elma's still has a shot since Xenoblade X is its own separate series with a confirmed future.
rex and pyra are more likely with definitive edition than elma you know. considering 1 and 2 are connected I don't know why you're acting like they can't be added now when definitive edition is dropping and is having all those remake connections to 2 like alvis's redesign. not to mention the fact arms came out same year as xenoblade 2, and is getting added now also

Good moveset. But I'm not sure if it's my favorite concept I've seen for this character. But honestly with how many ways you could implement them, at this point if they do make it in I'll probably just be happy to have the character. With the options available for the moveset, it's starting to sound like actively wanting it to be built a certain way is just setting expectations too high.
One question. Say the Up B is used when Rex and Pyra both are about to fall off stage. What happens to Pyra?

And yes, I saw the end of the video, and I heard why you didn’t include Mythra. But I don’t agree for a couple reasons. 1, just cuz they share an aspect to another character on surface level, doesn’t mean they can’t do their own thing. I mean, for the Creators sake look at the Street Fighters and Terry, or, Any of the Sword peoples
Second, you can still have her there and make things comprehensible
My view on Rex would be... Something like yours actually. Well, in terms of Specials and regular combos. Only things I’d change is have Pyra be in the background to support Rex, as in game Blades, like Persona’s can’t be hurt. At least in gameplay. Also I Would add Mythra to the line up. And have Switching between forms act like how Inklings refill Ink, Shield + B and BOOM, switched. Or something like that. I’d also make a way for the Aegis to be playable alongside Rex. That’s where I pull from the Torna side of things, Switching who’s in control. Mapped to Down B, it could be a counter that does damage to the opponent and heals a little like in Torna, or just a way to switch control. Then when you hold Down B, that’s when the Blade Specials activate, sorta like how you hold B for Shulk to show all the Monado artes at once, or how Terry has 2 Specials for his Side B. When Rex is switched for Pyra or Mythra, I’d say keep the specials say for natural B as the Aegis don’t have no grapple hook :3
And that’s just what I think could happen IF they get in. I’m honestly on the side that thinks Spirits deconfirm people, and it’s not cuz I agree with fan rules. Yes last game Trophy’s didn’t deconfirm as Lucas and Mewtwo came back, not in that order, and they had trophies. But the context for Spirits is different than Trophy’s. A trophy is just a collectible, nothing more. A spirit is said to be the actual essence of the person it’s based on... or item. And yeah there are different versions of people like the Wii Fit Trainers and Mario, but that’s just it, different versions. As in they might have been taken from another place and time, and the fighters are the Prime versions. I don’t really see two Prime versions of fighters existing side by side, even if for example, you use the Smash ended of Shantae to separate her from her Spirit form, cuz it already is a thing
The way I see it, Sakurai did his best to make this the biggest crossover not just with the fighters themselves, but with Spirits too, even Assist Trophies. As sucky as it may seem to some people, I don’t think he’s gonna change his views on this any time soon, and would rather make new Fighters not in the game, which may be why we didn’t get any Three Houses content Until Teach joined in. Of course I could always be proven wrong, there’s nothing confirming either side. But when I go into speculation I do my best to keep this in mind
That said, if Rex isn’t a fighter, I have an alternative for a XC2 rep... I mentioned Torna didn’t I? Lora, Jin & Haze. I added Haze cuz I don’t feel entirely right leaving her out, we’d technically get a Xenoblade Villain out of it, the Torna mechanics would make more sense, and we’d get Torna music, as well as any other music from XC2 not in the game, as well as spirits like Brigid(and possibly Pandy why wasn’t she heeere!?). That’s what I think anyways

Down B should be to shift between Pyra, Mythra and Roc changing up move properties with reason to use them.

nice video as always. WHile I think the moveset could have went otherways, like i would have loved a combo of Ice climbers and Zelda/Shiek(a duo team combo but you can swqap who is in the lead to change the moveset), I can respect you view on it.
Now, I would love to see you do a Shantae Moveset. Your interesting take on that would be cool to hear.

I really like your take on the characters, but as a person who play Xenoblade 2 and Torna: The Golden Country, my most wanted after that is just Mythra. Thanks to the Torna expansion, I think that the central character of all the story arround Xenoblade 2 lore is more representative, plus the take in Torna where the Blades fights for itselfs is a realy good concept. #Torinosu5

You might be surprised. From what I've noticed, many use "anime swordfighter" as a codename for Fire Emblem characters. I've seen several people who despise the inclusion of Byleth and Chrom for being "anime swordfighters" while also having characters like Lloyd Irving and Rex & Pyra being some of their most wanted characters. However, we won't know for certain how the populace will react unless this duo finds their way onto Fighter Pass 2.

For me, as someone who loves Xenoblade Chronicles 2, I would be one who would be unhappy about Rex and Pyra simply for the fact, it just feels like a Fire Shulk Clone with a Grappling Hook (Plus hatred for Pyra in the main game of Xenoblade 2). If they added other blades that aren't the Aegis, I would actually enjoy that but the Aegis itself doesn't lend itself well to good moveset potential.
Otherwise I just have a preference for any other Driver like Nia, Zeke or Tora to get in over Rex. I enjoy their blades more, the weapons are cool concepts (rings, a sword that transforms into a staff, a drill shield), they switch blades and have affinity mechanics if they wanted to implement them etc. I just feel Rex ends up as the weakest choice overall and with how I feel meh about him in the story (Love him in comedic light hearted scenes, hate him most of the time in serious story sections) I just don't care for him for Smash (and don't get me started on Pyra). But that's my personal bias. I would just prefer not to always keep choosing the protagonist each time for Smash Reps.

@@nathaniel7165 Sadly I have barely "barely" played any of Xenoblade X. Started the opening, created the character, battled some enemies in the field, then didn't pick it up again. Not because it was bad, but this was during the age where I didn't want to play on my Wii U due to me being lazy. Would be nice to understand the appeal of Elma someday though. Hopefully through a port but I doubt that is happening anytime soon.
No joke I’m here because I found out about Rexs mini costume online and he was my dream character and I nearly cried so I searched Rex in smash and with this hope it is good
Great video dude. Also I do have ideas on how Rex could still be in 1. I imagine the spirit board would be the other Xc2 spirits plus the main blades not in the game plus the main villains and maybe something from Torna. 2. Rex and Pyra could just get a joint spirit of them together as a fighter. 3. There are plenty of songs that would fit for smash not in and maybe something from X. 4. One last point that’s probably nothing but I noticed is that for the icons you can choose for online, Rex isn’t one, yet Pyra and Mythra are. Man I’m keeping my fingers crossed. ;)

To be fair, the spirits of Rex and Pyra use their only game render aside from the master armor. Maybe it’d be a shot of them together with some concept art.
Because Spirits were meant as another way to represent characters in the game, but since Sakurai knows the demand for certain characters it could mean that they might have at least been discussed with Nintendo

I can see Rex & Pyra as last dlc spot, I dont entirely agree with the moveset you gave us Delzethin, since sakurai himself said that they love to incorporate new mechanics and fresh adaptations from their original game, I believe if rex makes it to smash, the moveset will be strongly similar to the way they auto attack with default XYBA buttons plus more fluid and with other strong options. While that is my personal opinion is okay to say yours is also possible. We will have to wait
I've never played Xenoblade 2, but I really like the moveset.
You should definitely try XC2! It's really fun and has great characters/story. It might be my favourite switch game at the moment along with FE Three Houses.

He can switch Blades between Pyra and Mythra. But after 15 seconds each.
Pyra does more damage and Mythra does more knockback

To keep it very simple. It may not be exactly like it in the games but its seems like for mechanic.

Arms made it when Springman was an assist trophy first. Min Min was also a spirit before she became a fighter so the chances are pretty high now. Plus Sakurai really wanted Rex in so maybe this is his chance
Not a fan of the mechanic and different aspects of the moveset, but I do appreciate your explanation of the background segment. It was nice to listen to, especially with how you put "It didn't give the closure Rex fans were left without" into words so well.
Nonetheless, I still hope Rex makes it in Vol. 2 and it's good to see some more thought about him.
What happens if Pyra is KO’d? I’m not sure if the idea of Pyra being vulnerable is good. It might make Rex too inconsistent

I got an idea who I think would of been good, but unfortunately there is a problem with something do when the series is technically already dead. To me I would of loved to see a Skylanders character as a fighter, but that would be really unlikely. But the series was great at times. And I would think it would of been cool to see a skylanders character like Spyro because of the first game, Tree Rex because of giants, Washbuckler because swapforce, or even snapshot. But as we can see Skylanders is really likely to be dead anyway.
