- I've been living with the BYD Seal Premium for 5,000km now. It's time for a long-term update! Get the REAL story on reliability, range, tech quirks, and overall owner satisfaction with this Tesla Model 3 rival in Australia.
Key points I'll cover:
- Living with the BYD Seal daily: Pros, cons, and surprises of daily use.
- Actual range and charging experiences: How does it compare to the claimed range?
- Maintenance and reliability: Any issues or costs I've encountered.
- Technology quirks: What's working well and what's still frustrating.
- Would I recommend it? Honest assessment after 4,000km.
Find out if I miss the Tesla Model 3 that I did nearly 100,000km with in 2023.
Special thanks to Share EV (ShareEV.com.au) who organised the addition of this BYD Seal into their fleet, so that we could rent it for our long term review.
Check them out for all your ride share rental needs, corporate fleet rentals, short term holiday rentals and accident replacement vehicle rental needs. Авто/Мото
Fantastic review. Would love one of these.
Thanks for the feedback
Great review. Great car. From a great country
Thanks for the feedback, for watching and for the comment. Please subscribe to help us get access to more cars for more reviews!
Great review,thanks
Thank you. Stay tuned for the Seal Performance review we are working on 🙂
Well done. Please do a review of the dynamic. Thanks
Trying to book something in with BYD as we speak!
Love to get your feedback on the dynamic as well-is the handling much different from premium? Do you notice much difference with the seats? Ordered one and waiting for it but considering the premium (only test drove premium as no dynamics in WA).
go premium mate. It's way better than dynamic
Thanks for your comment, view and questions! I’m trying to organise a review of the Dynamic as we speak so stay tuned!
@@huanghammerking2354 the bigger battery doesn’t matter much to me, nor does HUD or tyres. I might be swayed if the handling or seats are noticeably better but would have to justify the money. Also I’ve been waiting 6weeks already and don’t want to reset waiting time by changing to premium.
@@jamesjarman5003The bigger battery in the premium can't help the handling much, it's much heavier in the corners. Premium adds the heads-up display and a few minor things. I think you've chosen wisely!
How is the adaptive cruise control/autopilot? Does it keep the car centered in the lane?
it works, but isn't the best. can ping pong. I know this from the ludicrous feed channel. Kind Regards, a humanoid
Yes it works, it’s good on the highway tests we conducted, however Tesla remains superior in this aspect for now in suburban and city driving.
That said, the phantom braking remains a painful issue on the Tesla advanced adaptive cruise system.
Love the look of this car compared to Tesla.
Definitely looks more aggressive, yet stylish.
Is there anyway you think a spare wheel can be kept in the vehicle?
Only if you’re prepared to lose some of your cargo space
Hi, what is the material of the upholstery? Are those all real leather like Tesla? Thank you.
Thanks for your comment. Actually Tesla uses vegan “leather” aka vinyl. BYD Seal surprised me in that from all the research I’ve done so far, it is genuine leather used for seating and the main touch points. Other materials include suede.
The genuine leather is only applicable to Premium (as tested) and the Performance models Dynamic base model gets synthetic materials like Tesla.
@@roadtrip_reviews Thank you...🙏
What would be the real world range of the AWD Performance variant?
Great question, I’ll trying to organise a test with BYD and do a video.
Great review appreciate this, was weighing this up vs the new Tesla Model 3 (the one with the nice interior at last!).
if both were the same price (here in NZ they are about 60-80K depending on load out) would you buy the mod3 high range or the seal premium? They're btoh about $70KNZD
Thanks for your feedback! I’m currently in NZ believe it or not, trying to scope out a review for another BYD model.
Tbh it’s a difficult one because the main things that appeal to me on the Tesla are the driver app (unbeatable by any brand at this stage) and in Australia, the Tesla supercharger network does bring piece of mind for longer trips.
The BYD however is a more premium feeling car, easier to live with from things like Apple CarPlay, the ultra comfortable seats and the exterior design.
Australian pricing is $10-15k difference between each model and tbh I don’t see $10-15k of additional value in the Model 3.
My pick would be the BYD Seal or a Model Y SR (not the LR)
The current comparison could for many buyers be with the Model 3 Highland. You don't even mention it. It has a new suspension you could try and compare. I drive a older M3. I notice the road feel. I also am impressed by the substantial comfort and isolation of the seat. I have never experienced that combo. I had to recalibrate. Now it's not something I object to. I am an enthusiastic performance driver in this car.
Model 3 Highlander review is coming, however having driving one, I have found the ride in Australia is still not to standard. Even though it has been improved.
Thank you for sharing your observations and for watching my video! I’m working on a long term Highlander comparison, just waiting for the car to arrive.
@@roadtrip_reviews Sure. the ride of a car can meet let's say "the Toyota standard". One of isolated comfort in transport from A to B. That vehicle can be matched with minimized motor power. More of an appliance. Another standard might be "the BMW standard", where engaging with the car and the road are goals of the driver. More power and some road feel could be included in that standard. To me these are examples where two different cars can be reviewed with the differing strengths highlighted.
I like this car
Thanks for watching.
you have good taste
50-60 dollars a charge is still a lot cheaper than a petrol car for similar ks. although not quite 6 dollars a tank
Thanks for the comment. Tbh not really, it’s comparable to a hybrid or diesel for the same range.
Might hire one for a week.
Definitely helps you get a good feel if it is or isn’t the right car for you!
Why so many hates from the anti-china buzzers in the comment section?? I think BYD is making good cars and the review is great.
Thanks for your feedback, glad you enjoyed my review
@@roadtrip_reviews BTW what about the Seal’s ground clearance? I heard its lower than Camry, does it gibe any issue in beaten tracks??
@@Bennix I personally didn’t experience issues, however I don’t drive sedans on off-road style tracks so my testing was limited to compacted tracks and sealed roads
What are the crash ratings of BYD?
Very good. The Dolphin has an NCAP rating of 5.
5 Star Australian ANCAP safety rated, which are some of the most rigorous safety crash test standards in the world currently.
super good. as most cars are
Does it drive itself like a Tesla?
Tesla Model 3 doesn’t drive itself either. It’s just a nice marketing pitch.
In fact, the update Tesla released for my old Model 3 would block me out of the autosteer system if my hands weren’t on the steering wheel or if my eyes weren’t focused straight ahead. My friend was blocked out of this feature for 1 week in his car.
On the highway, both do a good job of lane centred assisted steering, in cities and built up areas, the Tesla Model 3 does better most times.
Since this video was filmed however, BYD has updated this and we will be checking this update soon.
I see a few M'GUY followers in the comments. Don't let them distract you from your work.
Haha all good, they’re like a cult in their behaviour sometimes. I owned a Model 3 before, nice car but doesn’t mean other cars can’t be better
Ref the door handles if you are in a crash if you are incapacitated and/or you lose power how do rescuers get you out in time or do you have to wait for emergency services, in an EV with the likelihood of fire is not good.
I've done 5 million kms on the road in taxis & I NEVER drove with the doors locked. I have pulled people out of crashes a number of times on road or in rallying
No idea, yet a valid question. But this isn’t the first car with different handle designs (in fact plenty of non-EVs have used this design including Land Rover/Range Rover models)
Driver side handle can push manually to open
@@drrahman8089not on the Byd. Only tesla
I live in Brisnane Australia
Nice
We currently own the 2 smaller model from BYD (Dolphin, Atto 3) and I am very impressed of the quality of this brand. I was used to Japanese cars (Mazda) and BYD is already close; not yet at that level but already close (especially concerning the price.). I also really like the Seal. But is a large car and then I would like more range and a bigger boot with a hatch. Perfect would be a Seal Touring!
Thanks for sharing and good to hear you’ve had a positive experience with the brand!
you may check out Song L then, its a crossover and selling quite well right now in china
@@nagi-springfield93 Thanks! I have to wait, which SUV will come to Thailand. BYD shows the Sea Lion at the current Bangkok Motor Show. Monday they will show the Seal U.
@ Sea Lion and Song L is category around same class and price to target different audience. Both are consider crossover while Seal U is a SUV.
I Dont recommend Seal U (Song Plus) because its build from old platform. If you are not urgent to get a new car then I would prefer to wait for Seal Lion or Song L, not sure which model will enter SEA. But both model should be around 25% expensive than Seal U
@@nagi-springfield93 I understand.I also prefer the Sea Lion. But I have to look what is available and the price.
Sorry, it's a mix of real and expected figures. Mentionning 600 km range is pure advertisement. Should be better to compare with other EVs in range and charge speed
The gauge on the dash said 630km each charge. I personally achieved between 550-600km depending on the driving situation (600km was charging at 580km travelled and 30km of range remaining in eco-mode, mostly highway driving where the Seal is more efficient)
We verified the distances travelled based on odometer reading at start and finish between charges and via a telematics device that also tracks the car.
U inspect for rust? Better do so , focus on the hidden parts. Pretty sure it rust as it is a geely
BYD isn’t Geely but good try. Have a great day
Have u not driven high performance cars before? They all have low suspension and u feel the bumps its just what u get model 3 is not a luxury car people need to stop thinking of it that way. If u want luxury buy a bentley or rolls royce.
I’ve spent 19 years in the automotive industry, driving a variety of makes and models in that time across Australia and various countries around the world, the Tesla Model 3 is not a high performance car, it is a standard passenger sedan and as such, I review it against similar cars in it’s category.
About the dumbest comment someone could make is suggesting someone buy a Rolls-Royce or Bentley if they don’t want a $60k car to drive comfortably 🙄
Just because an EV accelerates 0-100km/h in 6.1 seconds, doesn’t make it a “high performance car”
@roadtrip_reviews and if u read my comment I don't say the model 3 is a high performance car. And from your comments in your 19 years u haven't driven a high performance car then? Because u would know they cost way more and have a bumpy ride. Only luxury cars have smooth rides. Byd and tesla are not luxury cars ride difference is still bumpy.
Very nice looking car but only on short term hire, you can hire EVs cheap because no one wants them.
Just dumb to buy one
This is Australia. This isn’t the US
Not everyone lives in America mate
Re the handles again it is not the owner needs to know it is the rescuers, what if it hit a tree on the drivers door.
It is just as dangerous in an ICE car as it is on an EV.
There is a video on RUclips with a fatal accident in California in a Tesla, driver burned to death not killed in the accident.
That’s fair
WOW!!! BYD? It has not caught on fire??? Impressive!
WOW - original, undereducated comment, like they’re the only brand in the world that’s experienced cars catching fire 🙄
Your review is totally flawed , getting more efficiency on a motorway compared to town is complete bull, unless you were doing 70 KLM’s on the motorway that is. Telling people they are going to get 550 KLM’s per charge is crazy ! Why do I say that because I’ve tested the BYD Seal performance and got 358 KLM’s or 4.5 KLM’s per kilowatt on a full charge !! And that’s my normal driving, Motorway at 120 KLM’s and town driving!! Not bad in my eyes but please don’t exaggerate the range it’s just crazy and wrong !! By the way I drive a Tesla Model Y Performance and I do think the BYD is a good car but not as efficient as a Tesla to include the Model Y. Why because it’s much heavier and motors and bearings not as good. My average efficiency in the Tesla by the way is 6.3 KLM’s per kilowatt . There is a huge difference in efficiency just for everyone to note. My model 3 LFP battery car was 8 KLM’s per kilowatt so saying the BYD was as efficient as it is basically totally incorrect by a country mile. I think the BYD is a very good car but has its drawbacks like every car.
Thanks for your feedback and for your accusations. You’re welcome to your opinions and that’s ok.
For reference, in the state that I live in (more specifically the city I tested in) has a max 100km/h and 110km/h for the highway testing. Not many places in Australia where you can legally drive 120km/h.
On the highway at 100km/h, I experienced 11.2kWh/100km in eco mode.
My Model 3 that I drove almost 100,000km with in 2023 did not have anywhere near that efficiency on the highway.
Around town however, the efficiency is worse than the Model 3 (weight and wheel size/tyre choice no doubt contribute)
This isn’t a paid or sponsored review, I am only sharing the figures I was able to experience in 5,000km of personally driving the car.
Further to this, this figure is NOT achievable on days where the a/c needs to run at higher settings or on normal drive mode.
If you’re only able to get 358km per charge from a full charge in a Premium spec, YOU either have issues to address with your driving habits or judging by what I assume is your postcode in your username, live in the WORST Australian state to own an EV and achieve a decent range.
If I am right about where you live, the Tesla range in general will be superior to all EV brands and models I’ve tested so far when it comes to energy efficiency when running ac units as Tesla remains the only hvac system designed for an EV first, not for an ICE vehicle modified for use on EVs
Premium seal drove 345klm today 110klm - used 52% .....
Can you please put up the data from the car as a picture showing it’s efficiency and overall efficiency , here in ireland the speed limit is 120 km/h , cheers in advance
Seal perdoramance from Thailand. Driving at 120-150km/h i get from 100%to 9% with distance 408 from odometer. 358km in seal premium is something wrong with the test.
big joke, Chinese toy car,
Clearly know nothing about Chinese cars or even BYD. Maybe do some research online before looking dumb next time.
@@roadtrip_reviews U do some research this car steals Tesla and Korean technology ,low quality made in China fake car
Trash car. Verry disgusting!!
How so? In what way did you find it trash from your experience? Or simply because it’s Made in China?
Love it. Driven it, great car!
you've got a lot to learn son
BYD: POS
How many persons died in the fire?
Do you mean people died in Hawaii?
Cool story. Tesla has had more battery fires, same with most other brands.
Fake news! There has been so few world wide. Unfortunately the media love to blow this up out of proportion so people like you are entertained
Petroleum cars have had more fires 😮
@@cyclingstock4930That is true. The worst offenders are the plug in hybrids.
Tesla copy cat-shape, color, size of display-no originality
So it's a good car then.
Best part is the owners don’t have a Tesla Fan Boy mentality which is amazing.
Porsche copy cat-shape, color, size of display-no originality - Tesla🤣🤣🤣
byd chief designer is ex chief designer for audi and lamborghini , alpha Romeo. his creation is always original
You guys realizing that this is a chinese government sponsored car right? Hope you understand what that means 😮 personally I wouldent buy it even if it would be the best car in the world for the lowest price. Just think about the world and your country instead of your desire and wallet
Move on and find another post to spread your hate and misinformation. We’re reviewing cars, keep your bs politics and fear mongering out of my channel.
You probably even posted that on a Chinese made device, with Chinese made chips, while wearing Chinese made clothes in a home full of Chinese made electronics…
I agree with this comment. it isn't about hate or misinformation. China has been copying technology from western countries for the last 20 years. Look at airbus after they started to build plane in China.... It isn't only about byd but all the chinese electric cars are all financed by chinese banks backed up byy the government. They dont want to depend on western or japanese car manufacturers anymore. But they do have the culture of stealing and copying...Apple, google, tesla, they all had former employees stealin codes. Again this isnt about hate or misinformation. This is about reality
us government also pays ev companies like tesla so idk man 🤦♂️
we're looking at cars not the government
Well you are right, but keep in mind Tesla paid already all its debt back. And I don’t think they financially back rivian, lucid, fisker and all.
China definitely wants to be independent from western countries. They build their own planes, their own military boats, equipment
This is great for the customers if we have more cheaper options. But andreasj728 has a point here, let’s not complain when all the US car maker go bankrupt because people prefer to buy cheaper…..
Don't be foolish
