  • Please note: BYD has released a software update where there have been massive improvements in the Driver Assistance Tech I mention in the review. Stay tuned for a future update.
I've been living with the BYD Seal Premium for 5,000km now. It's time for a long-term update! Get the REAL story on reliability, range, tech quirks, and overall owner satisfaction with this Tesla Model 3 rival in Australia.
    Key points I'll cover:
Living with the BYD Seal daily: Pros, cons, and surprises of daily use.
Actual range and charging experiences: How does it compare to the claimed range?
Maintenance and reliability: Any issues or costs I've encountered.
Technology quirks: What's working well and what's still frustrating.
Would I recommend it? Honest assessment after 5,000km.
Find out if I miss the Tesla Model 3 that I did nearly 100,000km with in 2023.
Special thanks to Share EV (ShareEV.com.au) who organised the addition of this BYD Seal into their fleet, so that we could rent it for our long term review.
Check them out for all your ride share rental needs, corporate fleet rentals, short term holiday rentals and accident replacement vehicle rental needs.

Great review mate! Def have a unique perspective from many others giving their input as well. One of the best I’ve watched on the Seal. Love our Performance so far after 2 months. Downside is BYD customer service and service experience. Hopefully that improves. Their Sutherland (South Sydney) service centre is shared with Volvo and they screwed up our software, and staff didn’t even offer things like coffee or wifi. Just the little things I guess.
Costs us about $0.59 a kWh average at public chargers and have paid about $46 for a 20% to 100%. Home is the same as yours, 12am to 6am is $0.08 per kWh and get about 6%-8% during that time. Only get about ~1.5kw at home as we rent. But it’s better than nothing.
Again great review, all great points!

Everywhere else they say the Tesla 3 trunk is way bigger...

    • @roadtrip_reviews
      @roadtrip_reviews  5 месяцев назад

Agreed, the Tesla Model 3 boot is bigger, but the poorly designed crossbeam just behind the backseat limits usability.
The underfloor storage and under bonnet storage is far superior though.
For me however, it’s not often that I even open the boot outside of grabbing charging cables out or 1 large suitcase and 1 carryon so it’s a non-issue for me. I found it easier to accommodate 2 x large suitcases in the boot too.

@roadtrip_reviews the ground clearance is the distance from the ground to the base of the vehicle. For comparison, the new model 3 is 13.8 mm

Dam out of car warranty in just a year in the Tesla! With that sort of mileage, you would want an EV with an unlimited mileage warranty like the MG with its 7 years unlimited warranty vs. just 4 years 80,000km Tesla warranty, yes I know the Tesla battery and drivetrain get 8 years 160,000km which means just 2 years of warranty, same problem with the BYD as it to has a limited mileage, but the MG gets unlimited km.

No level 2 or level 3 options for autonomy. Doesn't even have sentry mode, or a 360 degree dash cam. There is no remote features like a Tesla no schedule control the byd app its just terriable, BYD is only good for someone wants to drive manually with very little automation. It's pretty much looks like an ice car inside with a screen. The software is terrible compare to Tesla. The only 2 things I thought was good on the BYD was it has a smoother ride.

Im happy it doesnt have that as I prefer to be in control of my car. If I drive I want to drive and control it.
You are forgetting things like lack of stalk, comfort on the tesla. Worse heat protection on the panoramic roof.
And you make infotainment a bigger issue than it is. Most people just set ac and music and dont bother fiddling with the infotainment. Better to get a ipad then.
Both cars are good at different things.

See that's the secret to BYD's success, not everyone wants to drive around an experiment with poorly functioning level 2 and level 3 autonomy (especially the upgrade package that doesn't fully work), not everyone wants to drive cars without indicator and wiper stalks, plenty of people hate how some brands don't have displays in-front of the driver (including many Tesla drivers who opt for aftermarket accessories to turn it into a normal car)
Different people like different things, and the negatives for some, are actually big pros for others.
The vehicle does have Sentry mode as of the latest software update I believe.
      Thanks for watching
