This USA vanlife vlog is a little different from what we intended to be sharing this week - because our campervan got INFESTED with flies! It was easily the worst week of vanlife we've ever experienced.

We have fly swappers in every room. Keep spraying eventually you will get them out. We have to spray our house at least twice every summer, just so we can get our sanity back. Our old farm house you could hear the buzzing in the walls, and void spaces. Our new build house has spray foam insulation and it stops them, from getting in the walls. They just come in through the door as the kids run in and out of our house.

Because we have cats, and over the counter flea medications no longer work where we are, we had a huge flea problem on and off for several years. We flea bombed and sprayed the whole house multiple times with only a small amount of success until someone recommended a prescription flea med called Bravecto. This has worked like a charm and despite the insanely hot summer this year, our cat (and I, fleas love me!) have remained bite free. But I felt just as disgusted as you two when they were a problem, so glad they're all gone now! I'm glad you both also got on top of your infestation!

You guys should change the name of your van to " The Flying Machine " that will immediately transport the inhabitants to infested locales throughout their journeys. It takes real animal magnetism to attract creatures wherever you present yourselves. Kudos, but I do suggest you get a " d-Con Fogger " which kills most pests ( you close up the room/house/van airtight ), and leave the area for 24 hours. You should remove all food/utensils/bedding/clothing, etc. ), and thoroughly clean all areas that were subjected to the spray ( can you say Spring Cleaning ). Those foggers will eliminate those flockers ....... period. Best of travels, and keep your Beans safe & secure. Always, Syn Silver.

I reckon you’ve got a dead mouse somewhere. They’ve laid eggs on carcass. Then they’ll hatch into flies. You can either wait for them to eat the carcass and then eventually there will be nothing left for the magggots or take your van to pieces and remove the carcass. I’ve had this problem when a pigeon fell down my chimney. There were thousands of flies but we waited until the carcass had been eaten and meanwhile taped up the room and didn’t use it. We got a cover for the chimney and have not had a problem since. I’m very wary of using insecticides because of alarming impact on long term health .

Open the windows and spin a tee shirt around until a lot are outside. Then put a little bit of soapy water in a little cup. Flies always take off going backward so just come up behind the ones on the ceiling and they will be caught in the soapy water.

This happened to me when I was in Canada. Driving home one night, I splashed through a big puddle, not realizing it had rained. Then I saw a poor couple with a child on the side of the road. A moose had been thrown onto their mini van windshield by a transport truck when the truck struck the moose. It almost went through their windshield. I helped them and went home. Over the next 3 days, every single fly in Ontario found its way to my driveway. WTF? Turns out that wasn't rain water I drove through, It was a huge puddle of blood from the moose. The entire bottom of my car was covered in blood. Turns out road kill blood is the perfect fly attractant.

Check on the outside, underneath and on the inside walls to see if you have any holes. You can get this stuff at Home Depot called Pest Block. It is a spray foam product you can use to fill any voids. It really helps. It also helps to have a small $35 shop vac to suck up stuff like that to get it out of the van.

Oh my what an experience! Made me think of one of mine... I think it's been about 10 years ago now, I returned back from a holiday while my parents were still away on theirs. The kitchen was full of flies. I started a war agains them but had a hard time winning. Also had no clue why these flies were there and ALSO realised there are different kinf of flies and mine in question were deathflies. So, something was dead, somewhere, in the kitchen?! After a few days, in the middle of my war, I decided to watch a movie and make some popcorn in de microwave. You will never guess what I found in there... Defrosted chicken my mum put in there before they left on holiday. She was planning on making chickensalad sandwhiches for the road but totally forgot about it. Yes. Stinky smelly disgusting chicken in the microwave for f*cking weeks. Anyways, keep on laughing about stuff like this!

Good to know that the fly situation is just temporary (hopefully! 😁)
Where I live in Texas, invasive red Japanese beetles invade our homes in February and March. They look like lady bugs 🐞 without spots. They're everywhere! Dying in massive heaps on the windowsills and corners of rooms. I often thought about going to a motel, but they would be bad there too. It helps to know it's only temporary. The same thing happens in late summer/early fall with black crickets, which fill parking lots and driveways. It reminds me of biblical plagues!

The flies were always a factor for me not wanting to vacation in Michigan - couldn't wait to get out, actually. When staying on Lake Huron beaches once, we couldn't stand still for one second because of the biting black flies that swarm you as soon as you stop moving. Then there are mosquitos, chiggers, etc. Really sucks sometimes!

In my opinion flies are like people they emigrate from place to place looking for warmth and if they see a camper-van all decked out, they are thinking wonder where they are heading next, so they cadge a lift at your expense and no matter how many you eliminate more will appear as they breed fast and repopulate in days. And of course you like parking up beside water and fresh fields , their environment.
