    Living in a Campervan is hard and in this video we have another problem. After a fly infestation and a mouse getting in the van, we have another problem that forced us out of the van again. In this video, we explore South Dakota on our US campervan road trip. We visit Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park & the Mammoth Site which were all fun in their own right but we, unfortunately, reached the breaking point.

    I can vouch for the steel wool. Definitely inspect your van THOROUGHLY, to find all possible access points and screen accordingly (very fine but sturdy steel mesh). OR take this time to spray foam holes shut (once the vermin is gone). Also, You can get mouse/rat poison, but there is a kind where they DRY OUT. You wouldn’t want to have a mouse die, and crawl into some tiny indoor space in your van.

    The great irony is Teddy Roosevelt likely would never have wanted his head in a rock. He was quoted as saying about the grand canyon "Leave it as it is. You can not improve on it. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it. What you can do is to keep it for your children, your children's children, and for all who come after you, as one of the great sights which every American if he can travel at all should see. "

      The dryer sheets isn’t the smell that keeps ANYTHING from nesting near it … It’s the chemicals! It’s the best bug deterrent around! I stuff it into all my outdoor nooks and crannies around the house to keep flying insects from nesting in them. On the flip side of that … No way do I use those things on my clothes for the same reason: The chemicals are HORRIBLE for humans too; Just because they smell good doesn’t make them safe!

    The Mt Rushmore presidents were not just "favorites" but are symbols of our country. George Washinton represents the birth of our nation, Thomas Jefferson represents the growth of our nation with the Louisiana Purchase, Theodore Roosevelt represents the development of our nation by designating area for the national parks you are enjoying, and Abraham Lincoln represents the preservation of our nation. These were not just the sculptor's favorite presidents. Maybe as you tour our great country, you should pick up some free brochures that tell some of its history. Safe travels.

      We just went to Mount Rushmore today, and we commented that perhaps the Beans didn't go into the visitor's center and watch the film or read any of the history placards because it seemed they had no idea why these four men were chosen to represent our country, or what an engineering marvel the sculpture is.
      However, I understand why as Brits, they would not feel the emotional response we as Americans felt when seeing it for the first time.

    Mt. Rushmore is certainly not acceptable graffiti to the Lakota Sioux who view that Black Hills as sacred. The Sioux were promised that land in perpetuity in the Treaty of 1868. "In perpetuity" lasted until gold was discovered and the government reneged on the treaty, as it did with all treaties involving native peoples. To add insult to injury, 4 white Presidents were carved into the rock. As if to appease Indigenous peoples, a sculpture of Crazy Horse is currently being carved on another mountain face. It's also not without controversy.

Jefferson was responsible for putting the Lewis and Clark expedition together, which greatly expanded our knowledge of the Western US. Roosevelt was behind the idea of National Parks. Lincoln was the President that held the country together during our Civil War.

  • @angelics-speak869
    @angelics-speak869 Год назад +76

    I'm so sorry it's been difficult. As a long-time RVer, here's another thing you might try to keep mice and pack rats (which may have been what you had this time) out of your rig. Get a package or 2 of a bunch of steel wool. Walmart or a hardware store will have it. Then get under your van and look for any gaps where they might be able to crawl in. Stuff some steel wool in every single one of those gaps. They usually access your rig by crawling up a tire or your electric hook-up cable or water/sewer hoses. Also, check in outside compartments for gaps and do the same thing. One of the common places they slip into is where water enters and where your water heater is. Another thing to try is to open your under-sink cabinets in the kitchen and bath areas (if there's a faucet there) and stuff steel wool into any tiny crack or space on the floor around the water hoses that go up to your faucet. Whenever you park in or near grassy areas you are at risk for mice so plugging any little cracks you can find can really help keep them out. Won't stop the flies unfortunately, but if you can find all the openings, it will hopefully save you the inside mouse problem. A lot of us also buy the bar soap--Irish Spring and put a bar under the sink next to the hoses/pipes. It's strong smelling and that seems to be a deterrent. Since you like to dry camp (like I do), you might also look into something for your engine compartment in the van. Mice and packrats (which look like really big mice) love to get in there and chew on wires. (Not trying to scare you-just alert you to the possibility when you park in grassy areas.) Some people put really strong peppermint smelling stuff in their engine compartments as a deterrent. Others use bright lights on the ground at night under the engine since these little guys like to slink around in the dark. Unfortunately, all of the joy and fun of living on the road also comes with all kinds of "interesting and weird" situations. Eventually, you just learn to roll with it, lol. I really love your channel and hope you're done with all of the icky stuff!! (P.S. The four presidents that you saw are the most loved and famous in US history. Washington and Jefferson were founding fathers of the country. Of course, we don't expect you to know that, lol) Hugs.

    Sorry to hear you are having these issues, but field mice are notorious for finding warm places to be. If you find holes fill them with steel wool. That really does work. Love watching you all and I am so happy you are back in the U.S. Hopefully things will get better. Watching you from Ohio.

      I agree 💯%. Plug the holes so they can't get in and keep a snap trap or two set with PNB. Keep the traps parallel to the wall so it traps them head-on. I've had them catch just a foot or leg, then they drag the trap along and chew it. Ugh!

    Hello Beans, sorry to hear of your rodent infestation, here's what I did to totally eliminate those little buggers, I took an empty old plastic coffee tub, several in fact. I went to the grocery store and purchased several of the peppermint liquid extract 1 oz. bottles, and made up a concoction of peppermint with water. I used 4-1oz bottles mixed with I gallon on water, fill each plastic container 1/2 full, poke a few holes in the lid place those containers about your van. The aroma is pleasant and the rodents detest the peppermint smell. replenish the containers as needed. This method with also work for long time storage. just poke one hole in the lid!!! Great video, thanks for sharing. And enjoy each other, and your journey. Safe travels, and stay healthy 🙏 Toledo 💙

    Ooo Emma, I actually feel your pain about the mice thing. We got one into our apartment in June… We close the living/dining/kitchen door since. We got some animal friendly traps and went for a 2 weeks holiday but I set up our security camera viewing the traps. Well… we just watched how those traps feeding the mice 😂 for the whole holiday. Great… Came back but still tried to catch it with those traps. After couple of weeks the noises gone and we didn’t even see the mice. We opened the door again… until a night that I woke up for that mice is under our bed 😬 Couple of nights later my partner said he saw the mice in the livingroom again. Great, so we closed the door and were happy the mice is out of our bedroom. But this point, the mice just got out from back of kitchen counters during the day too while I’m working from home. Not fun 😂 So I placed an order for 12 not friendly traps plus gel baits. When they’re arrived I set up all in in the livingroom & kitchen… next morning I immediately checked all traps after woke up and found 2 mouse killed 😮 but in the evening there was a 3rd one came out that didn’t care the traps & baits anymore. He actually started to my avocado tree leaves 😂 Crazy. However I found his little corner with lots of poops & a piece of leaf… removed the leaf, placed a trap there with peanut butter and we got him killed for the next morning. Since then, no more mouse… but still closing the door 🤦🏻‍♀️ and I finally sleep in the right position in our bed, not upside down (just thought if the mice climbs up that will come from the wall side). So I feel your pain in nowadays too… Anyway, when I told my story about animal friendly traps, everyone who ever had a mice told me they experienced the same as me with it 🤦🏻‍♀️ I even cried when I saw first time the dead mouses but we needed to kill them. Half of our home smells from their pee for now 🤢
