In this UK family travel vlog, we head out on our first trip as first time parents with our newborn baby who is only 4 weeks old! We decided to hire a canal boat for our first family trip, thinking it would be a relaxing and fun few days. It turned out to be much harder than we'd bargained for! This was our first time on a narrowboat and we had no idea what we were doing! As it turns out, juggling steering the boat, managing mooring, getting through the locks and swing bridges was all quite tricky when also filming and caring for a newborn!

Hello and welcome to our channel! We are Alex & Emma, a British couple who have been exploring the world together for over 10 years - from backpacking to vanlife:
2012/13: We both embarked on our own solo backpacking trips through Southeast Asia, where we would eventually meet at a hostel in the mountains of Thailand and begin traveling together. After a year and a half of backpacking around Southeast Asia & Australia, we returned home and to the corporate world!
2015: Travel Beans was born and we filmed our first videos on a road trip around Europe with friends! This was our biggest trip yet.. and you can go back and watch the entire adventure because we filmed ALL of it! This trip took us through Russia, Mongolia & China, on the longest railway journey in the world. Followed by highlights such as staying on a local island in the Maldives for a month, going on safari in Sri Lanka, couchsurfing & hitchhiking in Korea, seeing the snow monkeys in Japan, island hopping in the Philippines, trekking 60km through the centre of Myanmar, exploring the Indian Himalayas, and checking out some of the incredible US National Parks.
2016: Despite an unbelievably memorable year and a half of travels, which we were incredibly grateful to have had the privilege to experience.. we found ourselves in New York City, battling depression. At this point, we decided to go home and confront this problem head-on.
2017: After 6 tough months at home we decided to go away again, but this time with a goal in mind.. to turn travel into a lifestyle. We left the UK with just £500 in our bank account and a dream to make a continuous travel lifestyle happen! We both got online English teaching jobs to be able to fund our travels and to keep creating videos. We can't quite believe that our younger selves decided to take this plunge but we are so grateful they did as we are still on this journey today!
What now?
Over the years, we've discovered that we LOVE road trips and even decided to renovate our very own little VWT4 van into a campervan to be able to enjoy vanlife and spend more time on the road. We are now the proud owners of 2 awesome little campers - one based in the UK and one that we keep in the USA. You'll often find us using one of these vans to explore Europe and North America. I've got a 6 month old and a 2.5 year old and I have to say the sweet point with both of them was 4 months old. Don't rush to get back to travelling, you only get these few short newborn months once, enjoy it at home nesting and resting. You've got the rest of your lives to travel with Mini Bean xx

She's a more calm person and an excellent driver. Alex is the opposite. No reason to be impressed with Emma being a rock star. That's her natural state of being lol.
Youre not giving the baby any credit. I doubt Emma did the steering all by herself!

The stranger was my partner and our baby. He’s 3rd generation boater and we all live aboard and move together 365 days a year. Best life ever!

I'll bet this was a very frustrating and challenging trip but I have to admit that I was completely enthralled and fascinating with the whole thing. Your baby is absolutely gorgeous and I can't get enough of him! I'm an American who has long been interested in the canals and boats. I do hope you consider this again someday perhaps when more stabilized. 🧡
I'd highly suggest they try Norfolk broads boat hire NO LOCKS! relaxing still 1 of my top hols & that was when I was 15!

The adventures can wait ... plenty of time for that. "Throwing caution to the wind" is not something you do with a newborn dear ones. I'm glad you made it back safely without any mishaps. Just enjoy your "little man" who needs a quiet, stable environment for now.

That was absolutely fantastic to see you as a thrupple and so happy, I can just remember when my son was that age. Even going food shopping was horrific the first month after he was born, but then one day it just clicked and I didn't care what people thought anymore as he had to come first and we grew as a family. He's 28 now and a director in our company business and I love working with him day in day out. I took my hat off to you pair doing this as that was brave! Keep going as you are because you both looked tired but damn happy, and that's what it's all about. Awesome!!! X

Noah is so cute. He definitely takes after Alex, he has that look of bewildered wonderment in his eyes just like his dad. I have to say, you did very well when my son was that you it was hard work enough getting from one place to another on buses and trains. He's fifty-three now and is still as much a matter pride and joy to me as he ever was. It gets easier and you'll be surprised how quickly he'll grow and take an interest in the adventures you'll plan together. ❤
Good job guys! From here on out, you’ll always be doing three things at once. But believe it or not, they won’t always be so dependent on you for everything so this is just another life phase and it will be shorter than you can believe. Noah is just adorable and love in your eyes when you look at him is amazing!

Emma you are a natural mother! Having kids is going to be super easy for you! Not too much fussing and being relaxed yourself with emergency cooked meals in the freezer!
Brings it all back! I loved our two week holiday on the broads (no locks), with our three month old daughter, 34 years ago. But she learned to crawl when we were moored up at Norwich. We put her little carry cot mattress half on our bed and half jutting out onto a shelf built into the side of the boat. She went down for a nap and then… she was gone! I was convinced she'd been abducted, but as I stood there, reeling with the horror, our duvet wriggled. And there she was - she had crawled backwards under it and was now in the middle of our bed.
Honestly, it was brilliant with a tiny baby because we didn't ever have to pack up all the baby gear to go out.
I am going to nominate you both for a bravery award ... well done all three of you.

Went hired a canel boat more than 20 yrs ago when I graduated from uni. A five person family on a boat for 5 days..it was fun, but also stressful, as it is a tight space. We got stuck in reeds several times and used the pole to unstick ourselves. It is a slower pace and everyone just took their time. It is a great experience, if you have not done it before. 😊

That was a delightful episode. Canal boats are not that difficult - unless you have a newborn to look after. It's going to be nice watching yet another RUclips baby develop and grow up. Enjoy your time as a family, it goes by to fast. All of a sudden my kids are in their forties.

I live and walk by the canal every day and frequently see boats and their crew in difficulty. I can't imagine how you thought a canal break would be restful with just two inexperienced crew, let alone with a month old baby. I lived on a narrowboat, sans baby, for quite a while. Once you're used to helming them, they are amazing homes. Remember, slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

Little Noah is adorable. As far as I'm concerned you guys are experts at that. You did really well and wont have been the first to cut their boat holiday short. We managed to get weed around the propeller and the owner had to come and remove it!
We took our new baby cross country skiing , camping, etc. He could easily adapt to all kinds of environments. Nursing sure helps to make it easier.

I have been holidaying on canal boats for years. It's a fantastic experience. My parents have just bought a canal boat which is very exciting. I did 26 locks in 4 hours a few months back. Your best place to get picked up is through bridges. The turning point is called a winding hole.
