That's my boat! I paid $125,000 two years ago for this boat's twin. My '97 Carver 405 was beautifully maintained, upgraded & always fresh water - terrific bang for the buck. Comfortably livable for two or three people, we can day cruise with 12+ on board and not feel crowded. Features they missed - three zone HVAC, the salon couch converts to a third bed, and the aft hardtop doubles as a 15' high dive platform. Entertain kids for days! The gas engines are appropriate for inland waters where diesel isn't always available. Realistically, cruise is closer to 10 or 12 knots...top end of 20 if you fear no fuel bill. The tall bridge & salon magnifies the roll, so it's best suitable for protected waters. Great value!

Hello, glad to hear you are happy with your boat as we are looking for something like this turnkey entry level yacht. My wife and I a nearing retirement and looking for a nice way to get out of the cold Northeast and live in the South during the Winter. Being that this is our first view at boating and yachting for that matter we have a ton of questions. What about insurance? From what I have being seeing, you cannot get full coverage because of the age over 20 years in the event the boat is totaled or stolen which our biggest concern. What about yearly maintenance? What is required? Do you feel safe being moored in a marina? Thanks.

Thanks for the 'real picture!' Sometimes when you see all these luxurious interior spaces and everything, it can be too easy to forget that when you live on a boat you're not in a house; you're in a machine. And machines break, require a ton of maintenance, and are generally a lot more complicated to keep functioning than houses are.
I'm not saying people shouldn't live on boats... if I were younger and had fewer people in my family, I would probably do it myself. I may yet do it someday, if I have enough money to hire crew. But I wouldn't do it without crew, because I have neither the physical energy nor the knowledge to do my own day to day maintenance and repairs; and there's not really much way to avoid it.
Both of the old definitions are true:
Boat (n.): a hole in the water into which to throw money
      and
Cruising (v.): Doing boat repair in a lot of exotic places

I'm glad i wasnt the guy who had to get those two big block 454s down in that hole in the main salon. I worked at a boatyard as a young man and was underneath the big blocks getting lowered down into place, and i would take a pin and align the mounts. Always humbling to have a large weight above you.

My cursory search of liveaboard dock space in Miami... or options to dock offshore and pull into a harbor with a dinghy... I could buy the boat, but then where will I keep it, where will I park a car in Miami so I can get around? I would love to buy it, actually very interested, but I'm not spending years on a waiting list or paying $4,000/month for a dock.

I plan on mostly retiring (except summers) in 2-3 years. Planning on living abroad in Philippines, DR or Playa Del Carmen other 9 months. With housing on Long Island sooooo expensive, just a basement apartment this size and furnished would be near 24k a year! To buy a small house that needs work 400k plus 8-12k in taxes. Cost of these options, along with keeping my RE Appraisal License and all SW active along with 2nd car cost kinda defeats income benefits of coming back to LI to work for 3 months......
As a fan of you guys I came up with idea (Thanks!!!) of something like this boat as a VERY viable option. The live aboard thing here in NY you wouldn't want to do 12 months a year but 6 months weather is pretty good and great the 3 months I'd need to be here. And a 2 week Holiday visit in winter maybe. Does a boat like this have heat for winter? If not - no big deal. The $ savings would be awesome as summer only seasonal rentals on LI.... That could be 15-20k for peak summer season at starter level..... This boat / price looks near 100% perfect for me! 100K is same as 4-5 years of lowest rent or own payment option above.... The following 5 years and onward I'd be saving 20-25k a year! And that would allow the 3 months in NY to be way more vacation than for work :-) A bigger Fridge and TVs, new built ins for rear outdoor lounge space and bow cushions all for 100K. Love it! Gonna go look at your old aft cabin home now! As always - great job!

For the price point it makes sense. You will pay for docking (rent) and some utilities (electric, water, etc.)

Speaking of pets, I'm imagining someone cruising with a cat in this yacht; with the counters between the salon and galley, plus the steps down, you'd have a furry little someone watching over you from above, for sure.
Curious, Rico, what's the reason for not liking gasoline boats? I'm ignorant about these kinds of things.
