In this van life video we experience off-grid living in Colorado as we head into the mountains and try dispersed camping. We try out our camper van's shower for the first time and it doesn't go to plan. We got to enjoy all the joys of wild camping with beautiful nature surrounding us and waking up to a huge bull moose right outside our campervan. Colorado is the last State we will be visiting on our US road trip and we are already loving it.

If you haven't used the hot water then the hot water heater probably has stagnant water in it.. try emptying the tank, fill the system with vinegar or bleach water and let it sit overnight. Next day empty the tank and flush it out with fresh water. Loved your American road trip.. even the mouse and fly capers! Take care you two ❤️ xx

We found that smell by accident earlier this years- you need to drain your hot water heater. And rinse it out a few times. If you don't use the water in there for two weeks, it will do that, as I've searched and read about. Once we kept the water out of our tank long term, the smell has gone and stayed away.

If the water smells like rotten eggs, it could be due to the higher sulphur content in well water or municipal water source. Always ask the locals, then see if there's a filtered water source for your tanks. As others have said, the smell could be from stagnate water. I don't know much about the tablets you can add to the tanks or if they ruin them, so I would suggest learning more about what others do for their water holds. Glad you got to see more wild life!

I don't know why people go to the trouble of those daft showers. My system that I call " the portable manual shower" consists of a washing up bowl filled with warm clean water and a jug which is used to scoop the water gently where it is needed on your person. Couple of jugs full to lather up and the rest to rinse down. Best invention ever, been going for a few thousand years as far as I know. 😉😄

I flew to Colorado from Philadelphia, PA, and met up with a couple girls I knew who were going to Bolder University. I wanted to stay there. We did neat things and things that I understand are not even available anymore and some are. We went to Central City, which was the old western town back in the day and the tap room was the one with the lady's face painted on the floor. I forget who she was and the whole story, but there was a man playing old songs on this old piano and we began to sing as we sat and listened. He called me up to sit with him and I found out that he was from a place very near to where I grew up. Strange. We then spent a weekend in the Colorado Springs area where we made reservations to have dinner at this ranch where they served dinner as they would to the workers on the farms....in a barn with long roughly built tables and we stood in line with our metal plates and cups and took whatever they gave to us. You got coffee at the end of the line and they would yell "RUN" and they meant it, because the cup and plate got hot if you lingered. It was so much fun and such great memories. We also went to the Garden of the Gods and that was also pretty. We also had dinner one evening at this very fancy restaurant up on Pikes Peak and the view was amazing. Have you done any of these things or are they no longer there? Colorado looked like something out of a magazine, only live. Beautiful.

Your water heater has an anode rod to extend the life of your water heater. Anaerobic bacteria reacts with magnesium or aluminum anode rod which produces a rotten egg smell. I always cut them off the plug in my rv’s. It eliminates the smell but at the expense of a shortened water heater life (worth it).

      The SCALE of the WEST
(USA west of the ole Mississippi) dwarfs anything You'll find in Europe or eastern USA ( & Muni TAP water NEEDS filtration too !!!)
That's why I think 3 roadside camp spots in 1 hour's drive is plenty !!!
You go out West to get aWAY from the glut of Humans !!! That's why You were.ABLE to see MOOSE 🌲🌲🌲 I'm an American who's had regular exp in the Quetico Woods + Lakes of Canada/ Minnesota/Michigan area,
where Moose, Loons, Black Bear + Eagles are common. I lived in the Western Slope of the Colorado Rockies for a time, as an older child & we saw Deer everywhere,
Mountain Goats + 'Lions' & Bear at high elevations. But I didn't think Moose were native to that part of the country !!!
      They belong farther North.
U may count Yourselves Lucky to have seen One so EZly ! They're Enormous + a bit Primeval...peaceful NON-predators BUT can incidentally damage your Rig or even Trample YOU,
while searching food, IF You don't keep your Distance. They move SLOWly. So Great Photo Ops w Moose ! Love 'em!!
They SWIM too & You can always spot those iconic Antlers 😉 This does Concern Me though, bc it may be a sign of SEVERE Environmental Degradation farther North... forcing them to search for both FOOD + HABITAT beyond the Southern boundaries of their Traditional Range.
Please find out as much as You CAN about that situation, while You're Out there. This Fall SEASON is a Perfect Time to Travel out West ( fewer crowds & MORE Big Animal sightings 💡) In USA, the tendency is to travel EAST>

Another great video! If you plan on storing your RV in Colorado you need to winterize your RV, draining the water system will not get all of the water out of the system you need to circulate RV antifreeze through the water system if you don't you will come back to frozen and busted water lines. If you have never winterized an RV water system before you should really take it to an RV Dealer and have it done. The dealer will normally guarantee your system will not be damaged by the cold when they winterize it. It looks like you were in the Fort Collins area if so there are several RV Dealers in the Fort Collins and Loveland area along with a number of storage facilities.

The smell is due to bacteria caused by bacteria and sulfur interacting with the anode rod in your water heater. The rod is meant to prevent corrosion, however, hydrogen sulfide is produced when the bacteria and sulfide react to it. Flush the tank with hydrogen peroxide and replace the anode rod. Also... some people just pull the rod entirely and risk the corrosion. (Not recommend of course).

You can run water through the hot water tank without the propane being on. This will help keep it fresher. If you have an outside faucet with hot water, turn on the water pump, open the hot water and let what ever is in there out. Otherwise, you might be able to run the shower hose through a window. I do agree with putting some bleach in your fresh water tanks, then drive for a couple of hours, then drain the tanks (there may be a valve outside on the tank bottom. Then fill again, drain again and refill. Keep turning on the hot water (without heating it) to flush the hot water tank. Also, buy a couple bars of Irish Spring soap, open them and leave in the box or wrapper, in your compartment below and or anywhere you think rodents are getting in. It will keep them away. Once your get everything dialed in camper vans are great.

I do not recommend bleach since it kills the microbials in the gray tank that help break down anything that goes down the drain. For a better option use White vinegar. will disinfect the gray tank or fresh water tank without killing the good microbials in the grey or black tanks.

Also, if your water takes a little bit to heat up - hold the shower faucet over a bucket so you can use the water for something else. I have a portable hot water heater that I use with a 5 gallon bucket for car camping showers - I make sure to run the faucet in the bucket while it's heating or I've wasted half the water before I even can shower. Good luck with the smell - I'm thinking stagnant water too.

You purchased the van in Grand Rapids, MI. I live in Fremont, MI, only an hour drive north-west. Our area has a significant amount of clay in the soil. The clay has a high sulfur content and the rusty water stains everything orange. If we didn’t have a double water softener hooked up, our tap water would be orange and smell like stinky eggs. I live out of city limits so we have to dig our own wells to pump water and put septic fields in for drainage. We have spoken with neighbors as to different well depths and it doesn’t matter if yours is shallow or deep, you still get the stinky, rusty water.
I, personally, do not drink the water even if it has gone through the double softener system. I use the softener water for bathing, cooking, laundry, etc but refill a 5 gallon water jug dispenser that uses reverse osmosis water.
It is strange but you can find natural springs around here that do not have that smell. It’s crisp clean water with no rusty sediment. But the natural springs are somewhat hard to find.
Sooooo I guess I’m saying you purchased it in Michigan-surrounded by the beautiful fresh water Great Lakes but the stinky well water from the clay soil. Maybe, just maybe that’s what’s luring the mice 🐁 …the hope of finding some hard boiled eggs 🥚 .

I love how light and bright your home on wheels is. Despite all your trials and tribulations with bugs and critters it is a BEAUTIFUL van. Your shower setup looks really cool as well despite the terrible eggy mishap. Soon you'll have a bug-fee, critter-free, egg aroma-free adventure and everything van-wise will be absolutely peachy! Your latest adventure looked, as you said it was - fabulous.

So funny though. Belly laugh. Great guys. Thank you. After flushing out the tank purify it with Aqua Tabs. 1 tab per 25 litres. Once a year clean the tank and the pipes with puriclean. You can't beat a big red floppy rubble bucket from hardware and a kettle of hot water and a sponge. You can use a hula hoop and put a shower curtain around it.

Hello Travel beans, fellow Brit here now living in Australia. Thoroughly enjoy watching your travels, plus the fact you highlight the downs too.
Some show this perfect world and that's not reality. I'm a big lover of animals/wildlife, America has some great creatures.
You have so many more adventures to come, enjoy every moment.
Australia should definitely be on your radar too in the future. All the best to you both 😃

  • @kst357
    @kst357 Год назад

The stinky shower water could be due to old water left in the heater tank that had a high sulfur content. Not all of America has "sweet water" & in some places it downright stinks. Anyway, a rule of thumb is to flush & drain your holding tanks when you're done camping & flush the entire system with fresh clean water before embarking.

Hey there. Been watching a long time. We agree with Sherry Parker. If that water system had been sitting a while, it needs to be flushed, filled, flushed and refilled. We have almost the same van. (1992 Dodge) Yours is nicer. Remember to prep your van when you go back to the UK. Empty all the water so it doesn't freeze and burst a pipe. Keep on Bean'n !

You shouldn't have stagnant water that soon after just getting the van. They should have cleaned the tanks for you before you bought it. Flush the water system and water heater with vinegar and let it sit a day or more then flush it with fresh water to see if it is better.
