    We just got back today doing our 7 cruise and 6 day land tour . So glad you made it! I was happy to be home ,14 days is a long time . We got to see the Denali and it was a clear beautiful day . Alaska is beautiful but expensive . It reminded me a lot of my home state Michigan especially the North. Be safe and have fun. The time change was a killer and made it harder with the sun and not getting dark . I never adjusted to the time change and Michigan is 4 hours ahead.

    I was pretty sure when I saw your teaser last week that it was a set up. How fun! The border guard was so cool to go along with it. He did sound very authentic and when he asked you the questions the second time I began to think maybe it was true. I would have been stressed for sure. 🤪 I am someone who loves to joke around, it just makes life so much better. Love to see others the same way. Now to think of a really good way to get back at them…
    I loved to see Tok, it was a place dear friends lived when they first moved to Alaska. I had to send her a link to the video but I’m sure it has changed dramatically since they moved back to the lower 48 eight years ago. They were not in Tok most of the time they lived on Wrangell Island. Oh so beautiful from the pictures. How I wish I’d visited them there.
    So enjoy traveling with all four of you. Trinity might be my favorite, my heart melts when I see her. 💗
    People are too germphobic. But it is rather funny because you are right, people will handle money handed to them in a drive thru and then start eating their burger and fries with those same hands. When we are pointing out something we see another person we may be disregarding something we do. I have been guilty of that. And got called out as I should. I was a waitress years ago, one reason why I much prefer my own cooking.
    55! Hilarious. You do not look anywhere close to that. I figured forty ish. Just a youngster.
    And you leave us with another cliffhanger. You guys! 😂

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  Месяц назад +1

      I think my favorite part about this whole thing is how everyone is blaming Craig and Victoria. 😂
      That guard pulled off the perfect prank.
      Step 1: Come up with a plan to prank a vehicle.
      Step 2: Ask a vehicle if he should prank the car behind them
      Step 3: Prank the second vehicle
      Step 4: Blame the first vehicle for the prank since they said yes when he asked.
      It's perfect! 😂
      But yeah.... they still said yes so mayyyybe we'll have to think of something. 😂 -J

    Loved the border prank :) Walmart sells blackout drapes for not too much $ (less than $20) - probably more expensive in Alaska, but may be worth the money. We used them like regular fabric to make our own window coverings for our camper. They are very light weight, but truly keep all of the light out. Reflectix is more for thermal control (keeping the heat in - or out - depending on the weather). Here's hoping for better sleep!

    CONGRATULATIONS.
    You both worked hard for this dream and have earned a great summer.
    Now let me just say a few things Ive learned by driving the Alcan dozens of times am a regular visitor to Alaska. Slow down! Especially spend a few extra days in Canada. Gas is more expensive but costs the same spent over a few days or a week. I find groceries cheaper in Whitehorse than Alaska. Cucumbers same price but in US dollars. You will find smaller crowds in parking areas and probably see more wildlife on the Canadian portions.
    Rest areas are great in Canada, government campgrounds are good value and firewood inclided in Yukon.
    So many RVers want 50 amp power in the middle of no where. Your forgetting these areas have no power grid. You missed a great stop in Watson Lake at the WW2 airport and beautiful lake. Great musesms in Teslin. Atlin is awesome and a place Alaskans escape too. Anyways wishing you a terrific holiday.
    Cheers from Yukon

    I agree with the no gloves. I see people throw the disposable gloves everywhere because there's no garbage can around. Also I have seen other people with rubber gloves they reuse but put them back in their trailer somewhere. I just wash my hands after dumping my trailer, no garbage or dirty gloves stored in my trailer. Nice to see I'm not the only one. Also people you don't have to rinse your tanks out for 15 minutes if I our going to use the trailer again next weekend. Especially on a Sunday when everybody is trying to go home!

    Lovin' that midnight sun? I was stationed up there at Ft Richardson, just outside of Anchorage. My first summer there, I didn't get much sleep until I figured out a way to black out my bunk. On the flip side, in the winter, if you don't go outside for lunch, you can go for several months before you see the sun again. The sun just clears the horizon before dipping back down, being up for only about an hour or so during the summer. Of course, that's in Anchorage. Further north, it's even worse. Up around Fairbanks, the sun doesn't set at all for a good part of June and July. Then, in the winter, the sun doesn't actually come 'up' for about a month or so around Christmas and New Year's.

    That US Customs Official is the GOAT!! 😂😂😂 When getting into Alaska is as big as the mountains! Our first trip to Alaska, we thought we were prepared. My husband taped empty pretzel and Cheerios boxes to the windows to black it out so I could sleep! 😅 I am looking forward to next week!!

      I agree on the US Customs Officer. We didn't air this but he spent a good bit of time making sure we weren't mad about it and asking us if he went to far (which we did NOT think he did - we thought he was perfect).
      He of course did all his official work as well - checking our vehicles, ID, etc and was super professional...but with an awesome sense of humor. 100% GOAT! -J

    "Are you 55?" 😡 I have a story to tell. Once I went to Target to buy my baby daughter some clothes. The checker asked me if they were for my granddaughter! I was 38! (or maybe I had turned 39).😠 I know some women are grandmothers at 40, but I was so astonished, I was speechless. Then I almost shouted at her, "No! They are for MY daughter!" And I didn't even have gray hair. So, don't feel bad. It happens. There are clueless rude people out there! (She was probably trying to save you some money. You know, senior discount. Nooooo!!! Not cruel at all! We are all really easy going and when you know each other enough you know whether or not they'll find something funny or not. In our case - that border agent was perfect where he took it just far enough and didn't cross a line into "unfunny in retrospect" territory. It will be our most memorable border crossing experience ever - in a good way.
      As to the border agent - I always struggle with people who are so serious that they have no sense of humor. This guy was super professional - did his job, checked our rig and asked all his questions, but he also has a sense of humor and I soooo appreciate that. -J

    What are “passport cards”? We use our passport books…we told to make sure you get it stamped when we cross over to the States. That is another way to keep track of our time down there for the winter.

    • @OpenRoading
      @OpenRoading  Месяц назад

      We got the passports back at the end of last summer when we were still trying to pinch every absolute penny in order to save enough to get to Alaska and we weren't sure what our next work options were going to be...so we cheaped out. 😂
      The cards get you into Canada and Mexico (and maybe some islands?) but nowhere else. You still need the books if you're going beyond that. But they were also quite a bit less expensive. -J

    Very funny and great video. Minor point of clarification, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Field Operations (OFO - folks in blue) operates at the U.S. Ports of Entry, Border Patrol (USBP - folks in green) patrols the U.S. borders between the U.S. Ports of Entry.
