Perhaps you could interview the park owners and give a less biased report. There are reasons for these rules. Because of the laws in place in many blue areas there is no way to evict for non-pay situations. Some owners also wish to run a higher end park. I personally prefer 55+, no squatters, junk RV's, dogs and children because I prefer quiet and peace of mind on vacation. I look for parks that fit my desires. You have choices, not rights over business owners. I also like pools that are not full of screaming pissing kids, already raised mine.

The age restriction is why we bought a smaller, new RV.
What kills me is when you arrive at a RV Park/resort and they have old, unkept (at least on the outside) RVs parked in their parks that obviously aren't moving anywhere. There are only a handful of parks like this. Then you have those parks that try to hide the over 10 years old RVs but while exploring the park you find them. At least here in California. I don't understand why there are restrictions for short term stays but then you see these old, falling apart RVs. Why are they there?!?
We have been doing upgrades to our travel trailer only to ensure it's safe and is better than it was when we bought it. And trust me, those with RVs know all of the manufacturing problems that COVID brought on. These new RVs that were being mass produced are crap. Oh sure it looks beautiful when you go to buy it. Then you start discovering all the problems. I thank God everyday for my husband. He was a Journeyman ASE Certified mechanic. He has caught problems before the RV companies have.

We stayed in an upscale “campground” in Vegas. It was absolutely beautiful. The sites were all large, and privately owned. Owners could rent their sites, when they weren’t using them. The campground had restrictions on the age of the units and the type of units allowed. Our unit was a year old, but only 35 feet. It wasn’t as high end as most of the rigs, and was much smaller. We could feel security keeping a close eye on us.
The lists of rules were lengthy. Let me say that most people would not be comfortable camping in that campground - so not allowing older units, and only allowing class A pushers, did everyone a favour. The rules protected the wealthy owners, and ensured a very immaculate, and peaceful stay. They had rules about everything - so plenty of Karen’s to go around.

  • @appa561

I think many are missing two important points.
First, the RV parks are a private “business.” They can set whatever rules they want as long as they do not violate a local, state, or federal law. Just as a retailer can trespass you, the parks can say they don’t want you.
Secondly, support those that support you. You have a wallet. You also have a voice. You have YT channels, forum/community presence, social media. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
Grass roots campaigns can be and are effective.

In 2006 we had reservations at an RV Park in San Diego. We pulled up to check in and were told that we couldn't stay there because of restrictions. Our trailer was a T@b which was quite unique at that time. It was a vintage DESIGN but it was only 6 months old. The 10 year rule was tossed at us. I showed the clerk the title. Still denied and she refused to call the manager. There were no vacancies in any of the other campgrounds and we didn't know at the time how to boondock. Finally, I just refused to leave and told the clerk to either call the manage or the police because I was NOT leaving. A couple of hours later, the manager showed up and put us in a campsite. The sting of discrimination was a useful lesson to me in empathy for others to whom that rule actually did apply.

I tried semi retirement in 2015 w a trip to Florida for the winter, I made reservations for Ocala Fl, paid my first 2 months, upon arrival the very next morning, management showed up w a 12 page contract that I was expected to sign right then and there, without having my coffee, i explained I do no transactions without coffee, breakfast and coffee. The ‘ manager ‘ was indignant, came back 7 mins later and demanded I sign or leave immediately. Without a refund, I called my bank, cancelled the transaction. I went to another campground and was told they don’t accept toyhaulers, but they recommended a campground that did.Upon my 7 months in Florida over that winter I checked out numerous campgrounds as I have done the past. 45 years. Thank goodness for honest people in the world like this. Thank goodness I decided to take two years to research this more as I am a tent camper at heart. The lifestyle sounds amazing as I am a traveler at heart but…..
    1. Too many want-to-be influencers. If that’s their thing, go for it but please be genuine. Put your phone down and enjoy the hike for goodness sake.
    2. Hedge funds have started buying up RV parks. Profit before people & families. I understand that people are in business to make money, but there has to be some kind of balance. People who volunteer or work at national parks or RV parks, are generally extremely wonderful people & they are trying to adapt to the new reality and demand. Be kind to them.
    3. Probably one of the best points you made was this. RVs that were built pre-Covid are much more reliable and built better than any new RVs today. This is a known fact in the RV world.
    4. Don’t be afraid to share the campground owners with the community.
I want to apply the 80/20% rule. 20% of bad RVs are ruining it for the other 80%.
Having said that there are some people that are struggling out there but my limited experience has proven to me that they are some of the best & most respectful guests.
    Safe travels everyone.

Before we bought we checked into several RV parks in areas we were interested in just to find out that most won't allow an RV over 10 yrs old, some were generous and would allow up to 15yr old. I just came across your video because of the title. We are in Australia, and I really hope that campgrounds here will NOT start this rule. Since the Cov** thing a lot has changed here in Australia as well, especially the pricing. So many campgrounds increased their prices in a way that no 'normal' family would be able to go there like they used to do. It's just not affordable anymore. You are absolutely right in terms of sustainability. Why should a fully functional and perfect vehicle be sent to the wrecker place, just because it is too old to be parked on a certain campground?
It sounds like these operators are driven by politics behind the scene, if you look at the bigger picture. Especially if more and more campgrounds/caravan or rv parks changing to this rule.
On the other hand, perhaps see it that way: they don't deserve and get your money. Spend it on businesses who deserves it. Happy travels and greetings from down under.

RV age restrictions even more frustrating now considering new RVs are plagued with major quality issues. A well-maintained, 15-year-old coach is likely to be better than something built since about 2019. Pressuring people to unload rigs that are in great shape and paid for in order to use something with worse build quality they have to pay tons of money for seems counterproductive. And big time thumbs up on the environmental impact of pressuring people to buy huge, new RVs when they already have one that's perfectly fine.

Our tailer was built just pre-covid and has been solid with relatively no issue in quality. Given the relatively little use, and because we take care of our unit, it's disheartening to hear we may only be 5 yrs away from being blocked from certain parks. Especially when the exact same floor plan is being built today with the exterior nearly the same +/- some color differences. We intend to continue using our TT for the forseeable future. We are typically state park campers, so we haven't encountered this issue..yet, but the closer we get to 10 years, the more it becomes a concern. Next year with be our 6th.

I am 74 years old and traveling solo. I bought a travel trailer within my budget means this past January. Was wanting to camp and bring my K9 companion with me. Well, my travel trailer is a vintage 1962 model, it is in very good condition with a decent enough paint job. Not the colors I would have chosen, but nor is it a psychedelic paint job either. In doing research while doing a few minor interior modifications, I did find out to inquire about the 10 year rule. In doing so - before I could ever even hit the road with my travel trailer - I was given two rejections due to the age of the travel trailer (not me lol). My dog is acceptable!! The campgrounds were in Houston and Dallas Texas. I had family & friends there. I wanted to stay for four - five days and visit. That’s it and the rates weren’t cheep either. One place wanted a picture, and I complied. The other just repeated that they had a 10year rule.
This has deterred me from going camping a little, and I am very disappointed. I am now having to limit my stays to state parks, burea of land management land, etc. I was hoping for a clean & safe place to stay for a few days at a time, and travel a bit.
I will do more research and inquiries as to where me, my k9, and 1962 Tepee travel trailer will be welcomed.

Charity it's a little more complicated than just age, it also involves type of Rv as well. My family have been RV park owners for over 70 years in a town that is a favorite destination. With regard to age of RV, we do have a 15 year limit imposed in the last 4 years. While we have Manager's discretion clause on admissibility the real issue is we have RVs showing up that are on their last leg and the owners intend to park that RV and never leave. When they stop paying rent and electricity for weekly or longer tenants they game the system knowing that an eviction process is required in this state (squatting). Once the judgement is issued to get them out (4 months later) they walk away from what is a pile of RV junk and now it cost $4K to have the unit declared abandoned and re-titled so it can be removed legally. This happens way too much and has become very expensive, so the rule was put into place to reject any RV that didn't have a reasonable market value based on condition or was 15 years old or greater unless the condition exception applied. Every RV is inspected for full functionality before it's allowed into the park for more than a night or two. Units with obvious issues, in other words tenements on wheels are rejected regardless of age. Old units that are clearly restorations or in stellar in condition are admitted no problem. Now on another issue, this RV discriminatory practice didn't just start with RV age, it started with Class A only resorts which personally pisses me off. My personal Fifth-wheel rig is over $250K, young and in like new condition but I'm not allowed to be in the same park/resort as somebody with a $50K FR3 class A. Now let's examine that. I think you're great and provide excellent content objectively.

This is common, has been sense the 80s and 90s, most time it is not the rv parks fault, it is county or city ordnance. Chatt tn and the county its in hamiltion has the 15 year rule, you got to park in another county if over 15 year old. 15 year old is kind of new rules in the 80s most places where 10year old. Around 2000 lots of places extended the 10 year old rule to 15 year old. Before buying a RV know the age rules, 10 year or older rv has little value, if to be used for camping. Me and the wife take our kids out for extended weekends and have a wonder full time. What it doesn't have is tv's, wifi, or a working radio. And the stove has never been used. What it does have is a few board games, a deck of cards for rainy days, a bike rack, and the essential's to cook over the pit. (don't through your trash in the pit please)... and last but not least relaxing lawn chairs. The best thing it has is smiling faces and wonderful memory's! And even if I only paid 4k for it, the times we have in it are priceless. Years ago we purchased a 1969 Kencraft travel trailer and spent 2 years redoing the entire plumbing, wiring, exterior, interior, etc. when we were done it was a thing of beauty. All original solid ash paneling, a four burner stove and full size oven, 10 gallon water heater with an expansion tank so the pump wouldn't cycle on and off. the list went on and on. I even gutted the bathroom due to water damage and completely rebuilt it using the original pink tube/shower and chrome finish trim. So sad that some parks are to "high class" to think that anything with age is worthless. Our Kencraft was built like a tank and rode so smooth. They don't build them like that anymore.

I first encountered this 7-years ago in Pennsylvania. I was able to stay the winter, but was asked to leave in the spring. I was told no long-term spots were available for RVs older than 10-years old. I was told that it was for insurance reasons. I have a 1996 45-foot Newell Coach that is now worth about $85k, but when new it was $900k, that is a diesel pusher with no gas. It is an entirely electric coach except that it does have a heater that can use diesel if not plugged in. My old coach was worth more than half of the RVs at the park I was staying at. I asked if I could store it there and I was refused. I carry upper limits comprehensive & collision coverage and a $1M umbrella policy, and that did not matter. The place I was staying at is Oak Grove Park & Sales in Hatfield, PA.
Another group that is restricted from entering RV Parks are the folks that have skoolies, school buses that are converted into RVs.
The big problem with this restriction is that why would anyone buy one if the useful life is only 10-years? There would be no resale/trade-in value and if you bought one gently used (under 5-years old), you would a have limited time of use. The RV Manufacturers should be fighting this tooth and nail and parks that have this policy should be boycotted until they change their policy.

Not all "homeless" people are so of their own choosing. 🙄 😒 😑 Nor are many able, let alone willing, to go into hock till their great grandchildren are grown to live beyond their means in order to keep up with the Joneses. Before countering with maintenance, blah, blah, blah, that costs money, physical ability, n a generally clear head - which are impacted purely by virtue of being "homeless." Suffice it to say, mental health is the culprit to many a woes when homeless, especially when coupled with the stigmas of homelessness. It's sad to constantly hear such negative references regarding homeless people. It sounds like being homeless is criminal. Well, the only criminal component of homelessness I see is that it exists in a country that is so rich n has seemingly more vacant properties than homeless people to occupy them.
I understand that some homeless people are so of their own choosing, or due to poor choices in life. They bare the brunt of paying the piper... That's not the case for the majority...😢
If they are "parked on the side of the road in beat up rvs," I guarantee you it's not their first choice. A beat up rv is better than a doorway, park bench, or bush.
This video isn't about homeless or poor folks with substandard rvs, though. If folks of reasonable means n nice, well maintained rvs are restricted, due to the age, can you not imagine why there are those "beat up rvs" on the side of the road?

The person who commented and who's family has owned an RV park for generations is spot on about the squatter issue. Perhaps what truly needs to happen is campground owners (and associations) in these particular states where the laws work against the Cg owners from getting rid of squatters need to lobby for changing the laws or creating one's excluding campgeounds. Campground sites are more akin to the renting of a hotel room than an apartment or house. A campgeound owner should be able to call a tow truck and tow out a squatter within a much shorter time if the camper fails to pay accordingly or has major system failure that could cause health and safety issues for all involved. This would get to the root of the real issue and fear of getting saddled with squatters or unsafe rigs. ANOTHER THOUGHT TOO...if asked the agent of your rig, turn around and ask the campground what year was their last electrical upgrade? Age of their bath houses and septic systems? Is their pool and hot tub operational and open? Hmmmmm??? Cheeky yes but fair that we expect modern up to date services for our site fees.

I have been using and restoring these older campers for over 30 years and enjoy them greatly. Total investment on this one about $4000 for four plus years of use. Show me one of these modern vehicles that will still be around at that age. Only ever had one age problem but that went away after they really looked at it. If it passes all DOT requirements then that should be the only requirement. The problem is the RV snobs that don't feel they should have to be parked next to an older one. Campers use to be friendly, helpful and clean. I can't drive any more and am glad my time is over because the future for us looks sad. I wish you all smooth roads, great weather and a cozy camp fire. Go say Hi to the people on both sides of you.

10 years ago I bought a 1994 Coachmen Destiny 34' diesel pusher. It was ridden hard and put up wet - used as a permanent home with a household toilet to boot. It ran great with excellent mileage and with multiple upgrades (e.g. immediately changing to an RV toilet and then totally replacing the rotting, wood-framed basement with custom welded aluminum frame and doors). In 2013 we used it to take our pre-teen granddaughters on a 5-week tour. It cruised at a leisurely 62 mph averaging 10 mpg; boondocking twice and camping at multiple RV parks through almost all the states east of the Mississippi and Canada without issues. I never gave its age a thought; back then it probably wasn't a "thing". Two years ago I had to "retire" it when a careless deer attacked the front valence causing damage that couldn't be replaced and rebuilding would exceed its insurance value ($21K). So now solo, with my 2021 21DS TT (a Forest River "Max", towed by 2005 Silverado "Mabel"), I learn that it probably has 7 years of usable life left. I'm 82 and it'll probably be unsafe for me to drive, let alone tow by then, so I'm lucky in that I can "let it go to pot" and still be able to spend lots of money on "high class" RV parks if I want to - NOT! My choice of where to rest my head while trekking is at a reasonably priced, full hookup RV park wherever I happen to be - along the road less traveled...

I spoke to someone that owns and operates an RV Park, she said that the reason there is an "age restriction" on RV's is not because it is old or ugly, it is because that often people abandon their RV's and Campers at campgrounds if the amount of renewal is more expensive than the value of the camper. Though I was surprised that someone would abandon their campers, it made sense that it could be a problem. I have an '87 Gulfstream Sunsport that has been renovated, so mine is pretty nice and is very solid and I would never leave it. Too much "blood, sweat and tears" as well as resources in this Rig to leave it behind.

if I were a campground owner, I would encourage vintage RV and camper owners to come to my campground. Like you said some of these older models are literally works of art on wheels. The love and care that is embellished onto these classic models shows by the pride, the owners having them. The fact that they have been updated to still be used for their original function as a testament to their craftsman ship, and to the owners who maintain them. I would even go so far to set up different sections in the campground to where people that had 50s and 60s campers camp together. 70s and 80s campers the same. But only if they want to. Make each section fit to the time where you can park.
I can’t help but wonder do they have a restrictions on vehicles at the campground? What if someone owns a 57 Chevy coupe? Are they not allowed to park it there?

I agree. My first experience with arrogant RV parks was when we were traveling with a brand new popup camper. "Sorry, only Class A motor homes allowed." Now we travel with a 10+ year old hybrid camper. It's in pristine condition with new decals and canvas. If they don't want our business, fine. Honestly we prefer military campgrounds but everyone can't do that. We also have large batteries and an inverter generator so we can boondock too. We have crossed the Country several times since I retired five years ago. Most campgrounds are 90+% filled with full-time residents. People are living in campgrounds, not travelling full-time but living in a camper stationary. In California and similar regions RV parks are always full so they can choose the big money customers and I can drive right by.

We were fortunate in one place because it was their off-season, so most of their regular guests were not there, and being late at night...and pouring rain... the person took pity on us and parked us in a back corner where we couldn't be easily seen... and we were only there overnight. Fortunately, a lot of places up here in Canada haven't adopted that rule...yet... but I can see the writing on the wall, so we just purchased a new-to-us 2020 class A so we don't get stuck with our plans over the next 4 years as we enter retirement.

    @Buzz-sb1pj 6 месяцев назад +13

The first campground I tired to get into asked me what the year of my rig was then told me no because it was too old. I ran into two more like that in the Tacoma area of Washington. One was Rainier View RV park and the lady told me that they just adopted the ten year rule and while I may see some rigs that are older than ten years old, once they leave they can't come back. Quite frankly, the very few in the Tacoma area that didn't have age restrictions were RV ghettos. A lot of parks I've looked at plainly state age restriction apply. I don't hate on them over it, I just move on but my rig is outfitted for boondocking with solar so I could care less if they want me in their park or not. Full hookups is a nice luxury I enjoy occasionally but I don't have to have it.
I've asked about the reason for age restrictions and they said it was because, for one, there's some serious ghetto rigs running around and I can understand that because I've seen them. We're not talking about nice, well taken care of rigs. I've seen rigs such as a Class C with the entire cab over area duct taped. A lot of older rigs have roof issues and when it rains they cover the roof with any tarp they can find. It makes the whole park look ghetto. Now you're on vacation for a few weeks and have your kids with you and the park put next to a rolling crack house, what are you going to think?
Age restrictions also means they can charge more for a site. Where I used to use the dump station I sked what they get for a site and they told me $85 a night. I choked and that was about 4 years ago. This place in Ventura, California was right next to highway 101 and that highway gets noisy.
Another reason I've been given for age restrictions is rigs older than 10 years old tend to break down more often than those that are less than ten years old. I know, I know, not My rig but they're just going with the numbers like insurance companies do. They don't want their vacationing guest, or any other guests, having to hear someone working on their rig.
Finally, if they use an arbitrary reason such as X years old then they can dodge the discrimination bullet. They don't have to justify why they didn't want to rent a site to you in particular. There's no racial, religious, sexual identity, or any other members of the protected classes they have to fear if they don't rent them a site. They just say they have RV age restrictions, no matter who you are.
I can understand a lot of their rationale even though it may not apply to me but that's life and I just move on. If they don't want me then fine, I don't want to be where I'm not wanted anyhow.
I hope all this helps understand their point of view.

    • @stephenscorzo

Even at that, it kind of creates RV classes where there shouldn't be. I think that it punishes people for trying to find a viable economical choice in these hard times to live in. It's kind of like if you have a neighborhood of people who are black and Hispanic, and you want to keep them out of your neighborhood by doing something like checking credit or looking at names on the applications and deleting them because they're Hispanic. Yes I see their point of view, but if this isn't resisted or fought against, this can impact the ecosystem of RV Traveling. As it is, I think we don't have as many protections as someone who lives in a apartment does.

If you were really interested in helping RVs with older RVs, what you would do is do a video on the campgrounds that refuse RVs over 10 years old!!

Yes, have all RVers boycott those campgrounds as some time in the future ones new RV will be 15.

Perhaps the "you" in your suggestion about "...what you would do..." ought to be the "you" in your mirror. There's nothing stopping you.

I have an 84 BlueBird Wanderlodge that is close to a twin of the one KYD had. It's my dream RV and I did not want anything newer than an 86. I think if they want to keep uncared-for RVs out, they should have something like "please include recent picture if your RV is older than X." I agree with all the points you made, great video!
