SUMMARY 1) Ask yourself what truly makes you happy (be deliberate of how you spend free time; plan ahead to avoid decision fatigue) 2) Plan trips and vacation (takes some work but good payoff; allows you to look forward to a real reward at the end) 3) Happiness at work (pack a special tea, a snack for a friend, anything that makes you happy / healthy) 4) Make friends outside of medicine (gives perspective, keeps you grounded, allows you to relate to others more) 5) Exercise (gives a sense of achievement and good for you).
I loved that you mentioned dreading going to work sometimes and wanting to just watch tv at the end of a long day, felt very real and honestly my life RN
I liked how you addressed the medicine bubble. I think a lot of people don't recognize that they're in it... Every conversation doesn't have to revolve around medicine!
i hope i can be like jamie on my med school and residency years..being positive and keeping the momentum...Jamie become a good model to me..as a pre-med..i look up to you alot 😊
I love your Channel! I'm a medicine student from Brazil and it's crazy how similar are the issues and strugles no matter the country! Tks for share this with us ❤️
I start IM residency in a month & I've been so grateful to have you 1yr ahead of me through my entire journey! I have this month wide open & I've been falling into the trap of "ohhh I better bank some time on the couch now because I won't be able to for a few years!" And you're right, I end up More tired, foggy-minded, and borderline lethargic haha. You are #goals for me- Thanks Jamie!
Meditation and some form of yoga helps keep me grounded. I’m about to shake up my life and go back to school (baby steps) with the end goal of obtaining my MD 💜
My cousin recently started residency and tells me how tough it is to do anything but eat and sleep during off days. Deliberate self-reflection and planning ahead can make all the difference as you said. Thank you for all the great tips!
LOVED this video. SO, so important to think about proactively. Especially loved your sparking joy at work ideas - and that uncrustables in your lunchbox! 😊
Hi Jaime, I've been following your channel for some time now because I've been trying to understand my boyfriend's work as a resident. What you share on your channel has definitely helped me better understand the challenges and pressures he faces at work daily. It's helped me to be more supportive of him! Thank you!
I'm a 4th year MLS student, and I definitely needed this reminder to take time for myself! I start my clinical rotations this summer and am looking forward to becoming part of the hospital community very soon! Thanks Jamie!
I'm currently a second-year resident. Your advice is so practical and simple. So many times when I have a day off I have nothing planned and I feel it goes wasted. Will definitely make a conscious effort to do plan ahead. Thanks for making this video, it really helped :)
This video came just in the right time. I'm still a student, but I have a crazy schedule right now and I've been super tired, dreaming about the hospital at night, feeling my neck as tense as a rock and wanting nothing more than some time off. You look super fresh, by the way!
Thank you! Being a student can sometimes be more tiring because the studying never stops- but remember to take care of yourself! Marathon not a sprint :)
Thanks for sharing this with us! I'm a PhD student not as busy and tough as residency, but still going through the up and downs. These techniques are so helpful!
I start my PGY1 Pharmacy residency on June 17, and although I know it will be a challenge, I am so excited for this next step. I was not great at work-life balance during pharmacy school, so I started coming up with a gameplan to make sure I don't get burnt out during residency. These are great tips - Thank you so much for this video!
This really helps me a lot right now that I’m feeling not happy about all the stuff I have to get done, and I’m in first year of medicine so this is really inspiring and motivating, love it💖💫
Dr Jamie! Let me just say, you are amazing! I've been following you since your MS2 I think and I must say you have been such an inspiration. You are one of very few I follow that show that yes you can do medicine and feel fulfilled while at it. I'm a 6th yr medical student (graduating next month! 😱), and I know the journey ahead is not going to be a bed of roses, but there's so much fearmongering out there. Yes medicine is HARRRRD (and yes I know I may not be able to really grasp the full weight of that reality until I'm actually IN there 😭) but you, you always inspire us, and really I'll take that over fear/anxiety. So THANK YOU Dr Jamie.
I just want to say thank you for this video! it is very uplifting and gives me the motivation to find some time for myself, and change my lazy routine!
i found your channel last year while struggling with my medical entrance exam and u motivated me to pursue my dream, today finally i've cleared the exam and i'm so excited to begin my journey in this amazing med world. thank you so much.. n to all the medical aspirants, i know its overwhelmingly hard, but keep hustling, and keep trusting the process... its long and gets really difficult sumtimes but it's all worth it. just believe in urself.
I love this! I'm just starting residency (and a vlog) so I'm definitely going to use these tips, especially the tea :) I'm nervous but excited for the journey!
I’m a first year associate aka intern as a clinical therapist and this is sooooo true!! Esp the one about having relationships outside of your job, it’s a breath of fresh air when you CANT talk about a stressful job to certain people lol
Thanks for sharing and spreading this thoughtful video! I'm a 2nd year FM resident and these kind of videos usually make me cringe. But you are very sincere! Keep up the good work :)
Hi Janie, can you please address social media use like Pinterest and stuff and watching tv and how it affects our mental health, as you show in the video. I think you just changed a habit that was bad into something good like physical exercise and that is so powerful how you did that.
Hi! Recently I finish my first year of emergency/primare care medicine in Spain. It was a very stressful year with a lot of mistakes and anxiety but It was a personal improve year too. It's now, at the beginning of my second year when I feel that finally I am controlling the residency instead the residency controls me. Thanks so much for this video, I think the most powerful and important tip to me is carry with me something I love to the Hospital. How long is the residency in US? In Spain the emergency medicine residency it's been for four years. Cheers. (Sorry for my bad english).
Hello Jaime, I really appreciate your videos, they have been incredibly insightful! No one in my family does medicine so therefore I usually turn to other outlets to get some tips. I have a question for you. So, to keep this short. My gf is the most driven person I have ever met. She is in a unique position to rocket her career and (very likely) become the best in what she wants to specialize in. I love her, but finding a balance for work and a relationship will be tough. Any good tips?
Sometimes going to church and really connecting with Jesus is all we need to explode of joy in the middle of our crazy days in the medshcool🤗 Hope everything goes fine with you ❤
Please make a video about the financial aspect of medical school, cost of the school, loans, living in new york, etc. thank you! it would be greatly appreciated and be very helpful
in the philippines we have only 15 days off in a year and work 36hrs shifts. time off per shift can be 6-8 hrs only. i so envy your 4 week vacations 😭😭😭
Are you happy in the specialty that you chose ? I’m just wondering because you said you sometimes watch TV thinking how you don’t want to go to work. You spent all these years trying to get to the point you are now and having this mentality just seems very disappointing. Is it just the long hours that make you feel overworked and tired or do you think you could thrive in a different field ? I am just genuinely curious. I don’t mean to bash. I love your videos and you have been very helpful to me as a premed.
Incoming resident here - I can imagine from my minimal clinical experience and just in talking to other physicians that no matter how much joy many aspects of the profession brings, there are many stressors, frustrations, and other negative stimuli that are beyond our control, and ultimately make for some negative days, especially in medicine. But at the end of the day most of us cannot envision doing another career, or even another specialty. It is also a career that often times (especially in residency) can encompass your entire life, and unless you live to work, no matter the profession, imagine how happy you would be if work kept you from other important people, hobbies, interests, and goals in your life. You are compelled to miss birthdays, weddings, family gatherings, concerts, trips, and even just overall quality time with others. Eventually it takes a toll on your psychological health, and unless you find a balance, as she explains in this video, you will not be a happy person. I can imagine (not to speak for her) that there are stressful days like that, but despite that, she probably is a perfect fit for the specialty. You’d be hard pressed to find a resident, attending, nurse, PA, PT/OT, health aid, social worker, etc. who is full of joy constantly. Even the happiest individuals have it tough. Some people are just more vocal about it than others. Just my two cents.
Hi! Thanks for your comment- I am happy in my specialty and I think it's a really great fit for my personality. In emergency medicine, once you're done with residency, most full time positions are much less than 40hrs/week and there's a reason for that. EM is a very intense, grueling profession that's physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding. In residency we obviously work way more than 40hrs/week and I think there's a certain level of exhaustion that comes with that. I do dread going to work sometimes because it feels like I'm headed into a battlefield, unsure of what I'm going to encounter that day. But once I am at work, time usually flies by and I'm reassured that I chose the right specialty. I hope this helps!
SUMMARY
1) Ask yourself what truly makes you happy (be deliberate of how you spend free time; plan ahead to avoid decision fatigue)
2) Plan trips and vacation (takes some work but good payoff; allows you to look forward to a real reward at the end)
3) Happiness at work (pack a special tea, a snack for a friend, anything that makes you happy / healthy)
4) Make friends outside of medicine (gives perspective, keeps you grounded, allows you to relate to others more)
5) Exercise (gives a sense of achievement and good for you).
1) sex
2) brothels
3) weed
So no one's gonna talk about how Beautiful Jamie looks in this video with that Pink Glow!!!
Aww thank you ☺️
behind that skin is just muscle tissue and fat cells and blood
I loved that you mentioned dreading going to work sometimes and wanting to just watch tv at the end of a long day, felt very real and honestly my life RN
This is great advice for ANYONE entering the work force period.

I’m not a resident but this resonates with me so much right now! Thank you so much!!!

This was so good! As a nurse, I’m definitely going to be implementing these. Thank you!
Love your tips, Jamie! I'm still in my second didactic year of PA school so I think many of these tips still apply. Thank you for sharing! :)
I’m worrying shift work as a junior doctor is going to really disturb my work out routines, it’s going to be an uphill battle 🙌🏾💪
Thanks for sharing and spreading this thoughtful video! I'm a 2nd year FM resident and these kind of videos usually make me cringe. But you are very sincere! Keep up the good work :)
I’m not in the medical field, but this was super helpful
This is also really good for people with a freelance job that must run around all the time and tend to overwork since there are no fixed timetables :)
Hi Janie, can you please address social media use like Pinterest and stuff and watching tv and how it affects our mental health, as you show in the video. I think you just changed a habit that was bad into something good like physical exercise and that is so powerful how you did that.
Goodness I've always wanted to specialize in ED watching this video completes my day.
Love this, going to adapt it for medical school since it's also tough at times! Thanks Jamie :)
Thanks for posting! Could you possibly do a live Q & A on RUclips? It’s been a while since your last one 😁😁😁
Hey Jamie I love your videos and I am very curious if you are economic stable being a medical resident and how do you manage your budget.
This video was Soo motivational and It came to me at the right time 😇

Your new kitten is so cute!
Love this!! Can you talk about budgeting during residency?
