I play about six of Tom's songs. Free Fallin, and Face in the Crowd were the first two songs I learned. And now I have about twenty covers and playing Open Mics twice a week. Just started playing three years ago. Never thought it would go this far.
God bless Tom Petty, his legacy lives on forever. Hope this lesson works for acoustic too, because that's what Im using. My mom just bought me first guitar, and I wanted to play because of Tom, so I insist that my first song is his.
You can ABSOLUTELY play this on your acoustic! So groovy that you wanted to play because of Tom and super sweet that you insist your first song is his. I bet he's flashing that cute Tom Petty boy-ish grin down on you.
This is the most complete lesson I've seen on this song on RUclips. And is just what I've been looking for. Everyone else is happy just to teach the chords and none of the nuances. Thanks Justin! You are awesome!
5 years ago when i started guitar you were among my first teachers. I learned a lot of beginner's staff from your videos. Thank you. Now it is a really amazing feeling that time went on and 1 week ago i made my own fingerstyle arrangement of Fly me to the moon; which i uploaded to my channel. Really so far it has been a great journey of mistakes and learning and i wish to continue it. Thanks again i really appreciate your work. :-) your signature opening sound ' Hey justin here how are you doin'? ' ... brings a lot of memory of initial days :-) .. those days when holding G major chord was a headache XD
I’ve been playing this for years. Your breakdown has me picking up nuances of this tune I’ve never considered. You just helped me improve my rendition of this tune.Than you Justin! I really appreciate how you approach the music!
"...(4:45) the relationship where the words are going and where the strumming is going". That's the key to this whole tune if you're singing it as well. You hit the nail right on the head. Thanx great video.
What a great lesson. I love how you start out bare bones to get the groove down and then add more and more layers to it. Really helpful as an “advanced beginner” lol
When learning a new song, I always turn to you or JamesJames. You go more in depth where James assumes you already know how to play and just want to see it done. Easily 20% of my repertoire (330 songs?) I learned from watching you. I was watching when you still had hair! (When I still had hair too)...
i love that you figured out those little slide-ups to the d-shape and the next one at the 12th fret. That's my favorite part. Thanks for your lesson. I'm jamming this song with some friends this weekend and you helped me get the important parts down.
fantastic. I love this. I think there is something way more interesting and musically powerful about taking simple bits and making them sing by creative use of timing, damping and embellishments rather that just playing a lot of complicated stuff really fast. Thanks for a great lesson on this Justin.
What an awesome insight, and perfectly stated too! Conversely, if your band is composed of No-talent Ass-clowns...then you better go crazy with make-up, costumes, breathing fire and spitting blood. Oh, and FIREWORKS! Before anyone mails me explosives, my 1st 8-track tape was Kiss Destroyer.
You look like you were having such fun playing this great song. I've come back to your lesson after long road of learning (with your help) and ready to have a go again, spurred by your enthusiasm. Thank you!
Always love it when my phone gives me a notification sound and wakes me up at 4 in the morning telling me it’s a Justin Guitar post!! Thanks for helping me iron out the A progression on one of my favorite Tom Petty songs to learn and play! I’m happy that you are recognizing what a gifted song writer he was and how much he will be missed but we have a tremendous catalogue to explore and remember. Listen to Walls (no.3) from the She’s the One soundtrack. Such a great track which just gets missed as it’s not one of those greatest hits everyone listens to. Also the album Hypnotic Eye is a pure lesson in Tone for us guitar players! Thanks for all your hard work in showing us how to be better musicians Justin! Cheers!
Apart from his Greatest Hits (of which there are many), Tom has so many fantastic "second tier" songs and deep cuts, it's amazing! Took me years to find out because i only had his Greatest Hits for the longest time before getting Damn the Torpedos in 2013. Then Hypnotic Eye came out (fantastic album i agree) and i started really digging into his back catalogue.
Justin, absolutely beautiful Suhr guitar, magnificent tone, and killer in-the-pocket playing. I'll be learning this one for sure. May I ask what effects you are playing through and I am assuming you're on the bridge pickup?
Your voice works really well for this song.
Bro, for a second I thought it was some kind of vocal backing track. He’s great
That's what I was thinking. I like his voice on this song more than Tom Petty when he does it. Incredible
Damn your voice suits this song really well..
I know right
👍😀
Yeah bro ! He did this pretty amazing.
The Shape ok sgt. buzzkill who pissed in your cheerios?
You u you know what Justin you are the most accurate guitar tutor on RUclips excellent work i love your lessons,
Him and Marty are my go to guys
Darrell Mcdonald marty isn’t really accurate with his stuff tho, guitarlessons365 is better
Marty doesn't explain strumming pattern.
So much fun to watch you play a song you obviously have so much fun with yourself!

Yeah im hoping to do open muc too here in calgary I'm up 15 covers and plus alot of delta blues loads of fun
Yes, Justin always has the most accurate and easiest to understand lessons!!!
Thanks Justin.. Tom Petty will always be remembered for his music. His legacy will live on forever. Live Forever x
I love when you sing brother. You are always in key and it helps with the timing and placement in the song.
God bless Tom Petty, his legacy lives on forever.

Can you play the song now? lol
One of the coolest things you’ve done in a long time.

I love the way you play this! You have a perfect feel of it...
Great tone and I love how you build the layers of complexity in a simple to follow way - just can't quite get all the nuances in my playing
I’ve been playing this for years. Your breakdown has me picking up nuances of this tune I’ve never considered. You just helped me improve my rendition of this tune.Than you Justin! I really appreciate how you approach the music!
I love the way you express "the groove" of Tom and Neil's style. That's what spices this basic material up to legendary status.
Justin is such a great teacher. He always keeps the student's perspective in his mind and it makes such a difference

What a great lesson. I love how you start out bare bones to get the groove down and then add more and more layers to it. Really helpful as an “advanced beginner” lol
You're pretty much the ONLY one doing these chord inversions correctly. Everyone else is just hammering away on straight minors and majors. Good work.
Sorry forgot to add....great lesson. I always love your emphasis on counting and rhythm. Making a song groove maybe the most important thing.
Thanks Justin! I love how you give the basics, then build with subtle details as we gain skill.
Thank you for trying so hard to explain the rythym parts.
I would love to learn the solo's. Great song. Fantastic lesson.
Tele is the right instrument for this song. Thanks! ❤️
a great rendition to a great track well done.
amazing tutorial....you"re the best, Justin!
RIP Tom Petty
Dude that song suits you extremely well. Thanks for the lesson!

Happy birthday Tom we miss you!
great lesson!! this small solo lick is great, you should have mentioned it, it made me realize how bends are changing my sound, Tom Petty was iconic.
fantastic. I love this. I think there is something way more interesting and musically powerful about taking simple bits and making them sing by creative use of timing, damping and embellishments rather that just playing a lot of complicated stuff really fast.

Hi Justin, I recognize your lessons since many years - and this definitely one of your best performances.
Great fun. Thanks and keep on rockin'!

This taught me a lot
about rhythm playing in general. Thx Justin!

Thanks a ton Justin, I really love the in-depth look at the rhythm (which is just amazing)! Real helpful, keep up the good work!
Amazing, Justin! Thanks for this lesson. You‘re simply the best guitar teacher in the whole wide (Internet) world. That‘s what RUclips was made for.

RIP Tom Petty😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😢😢😢😢😢😢😥😥😥😥😥😥💔💔💔💔🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸.
Life should not have any regrets but I truly regret not going to watch TP in Dublin in 2012. Never got to see him in concert.
And THAT is how it's done folks! I can even picture Tom watching and saying "So THAT"S how we get those brilliantly fashioned tracks so tasty"
awesome man, this so suits your voice Justin
Glad I got to see this Neil Young version .. lu'd it!
Good work. enjoyed the detail in the strumming, hammer-ons, etc
Man you nailed it!!!
Great stuff as always, I agree with the others - your voice really fits this song well. Sounds great.

Hey Justin, i know this is six years ago but wondering if you can do a video on how you got the tone? Greetings from Perth WA
Awesome man just awesome
i never comment on youtube, but damn man, you're really feeling this song, now I gotta learn it !
Nice one Justin. Love the A embellishments going up the neck...it really adds a great dynamic for a solo player (on acoustic for me)
Hey Justin, you've given us another great lesson but I wish you had a video of you playing and singing the whole song. You do a mean TP...
I imagine a giant mirrorball with a spotlight projector filling the room for the Em A chorus : )
Thank you! Been hoping for this one!
Justin, absolutely beautiful Suhr guitar, magnificent tone, and killer in-the-pocket playing. I'll be learning this one for sure. May I ask what effects you are playing through and I am assuming you're on the bridge pickup?
Great lesson Justin, like you said seems easy but not so much. You really broke it down well and I needed the help. :)
