In this Mary Jane's Last Dance guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this great song from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in it's entirety.
The tuning is standard tuning, E A D G B E.
Most of the chord progressions in "Mary Jane's Last Dance" are pretty basic, however, there are quite a few variations and embellishments thrown in there to keep things interesting. I will demonstrate all of those variations so that you can freely use them where you want, which is how it is performed on the recording and in live performances.
Guitarist Mike Campbell adds some additional fills along the way and a very nice solo. I will show you the main fills and the solo note-for-note.
Tom Petty also has a nice solo towards the end that I will cover as well.

For those interested in learning the harmonica part, it’s actually very easy! All you need is a harmonica in the key of G, and a neck holder. The notes take place in the middle and lower section of the harmonica. Breathe in during the a minor, breathe out then in and then out during the g major, and breathe in then out then in during the d major to the a minor. It’s really easy when playing the chords and it sounds awesome!
I use a D-Harp to play this song in Am, works fine

Carl I wanted to take a minute to thank you for your tutorials. I've played guitar for about 30 years and as good as I may be, there is always more to learn! I was asked 3 weeks before a gig at the Arizona State Fair, to play lead guitar with a 24 song set for the whole day. Needless to say I had a lot of homework to do. I used your tutorials for "Hit me with your best shot", "Jessies girl" and "Last dance with Mary Jane". The only thing that wasn't in your "Jessies girl" tutorial is the double stop line on the B and G strings for the first bridge on the 7th and 14th but it was easy enough to figure out. In your defense that could be a synth?? Any way some people may say well those aren't complicated songs but there are parts of songs that have small riffs as part of the whole song that as a band the lead guitar needs to fill in for the song as a whole. It's huge time saver to see you already figured them out!. That left me more time to figure out "Flirting with disaster" (Which I had never heard!), .38 special, I want you to want me, 3 steps, you give love a bad name, and many more for that day....It's always a relief when I see that you have a tutorial because I always pic yours to watch. You give extra comments that are helpful and usually an easier way to play the songs. I thank you and appreciate your work!!! Brendan

I listened to the intro of the song and the natural harmonic part sounds like this to me: 5E,5G,5D,5A,7B,7D,12B,12G,7G,5A,5E. I felt like this was an iconic part of the song that doesn't seem to get much attention and I didn't want to leave it out. Hope this helps anybody that needs it.

That main riff is easy to play in one sense but its difficult to play it the way that Mike Campbell I believe is playing it on the record with all the distinct palm mutes and strumming pattern.
