Ayla is a gifted guitar player who teaches to any level without making it about her own ability to command a song. So many teachers, even in "beginner" lessons cannot keep themselves from showing off. A teacher needs to check his or her ego at the door. I find that female teacher/players are much better at recognizing this and implementing their lessons with this in mind. Her delivery is clear, concise, and without any trace of condescension. Great job, Ayla!

This style of lesson definitely works, and for someone down at the lower levels, here are several reasons why:
Even your lowest levels still give the feel of the song, many beginner interpretations don't.
We can see what it would take to move up to the next level and can practice those skills.
We can also see what it might take to get to our eventual goal of playing a song like the original and can make the determination of how much work it would take to get closer to that if we want to go that far. Or we can decide if there's a sweet spot lower down, that we'd still be happy playing.
I vote for more of these.

Your “baby-steps”and “build-upon” approach to learning prevents your students from being initially overwhelmed and giving up. They are rewarded after successfully mastering each level and therefore motivated to continue refining the song further.

Great lesson. Thought I was at level 5 but had drifted away from the exact licks a little. This brought me back nicely and quickly. The Skynyrd guys always said that the reason bar bands covering their songs often sound off/wrong is they don’t get the licks the way they are on the records. It really is all in the details.
I still marvel at how perfect Ed King’s signature licks were for this song when he recorded them ..48 years ago-wow. And the irony that the licks and solos in an iconic Southern rock song …were composed and played by a guitarist from Glendale, CA (LA) who didn’t care for Stratocasters much and only played one because the other LS guys played Gibsons

I love your '5 Level' concept. Because you very accurately break down the complexity of the song(s), and then ramp it up in intervals - in the same way most people learn when listening to others playing. At first just the rough shape of it - then building it up.
It's very intuitive and at the same time teaching us the finer details with every step up.
You're a gift to the scene.

  • @dcc1165
    @dcc1165 Год назад +1

I'm a long time Skynyrd fan and I've been playing this song for more than 40 years. This is the most technically accurate explanation of how the song really should be played. I can't tell you how many times I've butted heads-with people who think they're playing it right but never took the time to really listen to the different fills and the other subtle nuances of the song. Some people fake it with a single fill that is some weird amalgamation of notes that sort of sound like the original fills -- but that's the only fill they use. The best poor-man's way to hear the subtle differences (without reading the sheet music) is to listen to the original studio version with headphones and adjust the sound settings (equalizer) so there's practically no bass tones. it's the closest you can come to track/layer isolation (sort of) without the original raw recordings, but you can definitely hear the difference -- and it doesn't take too long to realize the fills are all different.
Thank you SO much for showing the absolutely correct way to play these fills -- it will even help me say "I told you so" to the people who play it wrong :) -- except Gary Rossington. He can play it whatever way he wants...lol.

Started helping someone learn guitar recently, I have become very aware that I am not a guitar teacher. Your breakdowns are great at teaching me how to help someone learn. For example, level 3 to level 4. Teach them the chord so they know to get their fingers in the position and just have them strum it. Get them used to that doing that, then teach them to do the arpeggios instead of strum the chord.

Glad some like yourself in the newer generations still appreciate the masterful guitarists of the 60's and 70's and are teaching others, including yours truly. Your 5-step process is very helpful so I hope you keep these coming. I am almost 70 now but only started learning the electric guitar when I retired a few years ago. I've watched hundreds of guitar instruction videos over the years and this is one of the most well done, well edited guitar instructional videos I have ever seen. Kudos from a new subscriber!

You are a wonderful teacher. You have a great demeanor and pace. I appreciate how you layered lesson to accommodate multi-levels of player. You’re a pleasure to watch and you really understand the subtleties (arpeggiating, muting, etc) of the music you are explaining. Keep up the great job.

Love this method of teaching/learning. I've messed around with SHA many times but you made it very clear and doable.

I enjoy all her lessons, so though with the explanation, I am a beginner but feel after a lesson, I go slow and it makes sense, and the way she breaks down the songs excellent.
