Given that she ate that pick, I'm a little disturbed as to where she found it. I guess if you want to stick with finger-less, maybe something from Fleetwood Mac would be an interesting choice. I've been for some time moving towards playing purely finger based. If you aren't looking to play covers, and don't need to emulate specific sounds, I'd argue that playing with your fingers is more likely to lead to a unique sound and style, and it'll discourage you from doing all the standard pick based cliches. Though, if you really want to go all in, you can pretty much do anything. Andy, who has done pedal demos forever for one web site or another, and who currently seems to have his own (AndyDemos) is a great example of someone who plays finger-style but who can pretty much emulate all of the usual pick based techniques.
Love the editing. Super cute and fun. Good video. Your 5 levels videos always inspire me to take on songs I would usually avoid because they are too challenging... I would love to see some kiss songs but I don't know if you could pull 5 levels out of any of em lol.
I don´t know what to say. I haven´t learned anything new since years. My guitars hanging on the wall, a constant reminder of what I wanted sometime in my past but stopped doing, and never really understood why. And this song has been on my learning list always. And your video, just so well done, made pick up my guitar today and I practiced for like 30 minutes. And for the first time since years it was fun. You did this. I don´t know how, but you did this. Thank you.
Keep playing! I try to tell myself that when the stresses of everyday life takes the better of me, cos when you're playing and enjoying it, that's when you feel great. Either trying playing something that you never really put your mind into gripping fully before, or just playing something easy and sing to it for the first time. Can be equally satisfying. Life doesn't last forever and just to be able and have the skill to play the guitar is a blessing one should cherish.
Feel the same with drums it happens, started in 2013 played for a few years fell into a rut haven’t touched them in over 5 just started playing again recently and started to fall in love all over again, hope the same happens to you mate.
Same for me. I'm a beginner for 8 years and rarely play. This one I tried and I got some nice sounds at level 1 but still needs a lot of practice but it motivates me. Awesome song. Enjoying it already since 1977 and it' never gets boring.
As someone who once danced along to Sultans of Swing as it blared out a car's speakers walking down a street in Midtown New York as it crawled down the road, this was great
"Miss I don't have my homework" "Dog eat it again Jones?" "Well he looked like he was going to soo I ate it first" "...Jones..." "Yes miss!" "Go to the nurses office Jones..." "Yes miss..."
My brother, who was teaching me to play guitar, tried to teach me this before he moved out - and well I didn't learn it very well. So glad this video is here because it explains it and is so much more helpful than what he could've offered (he was self-taught, so it makes sense). Thanks for this!
I was painting my parent's house one summer, listening to the radio, when this song first came out. A small town, so I called the radio station to find who this was. Some new band apparently, called Dire Straits. Love your breakdown of this iconic song. Mark would be happy.
Your way of explaining is excellent. You show the next move in the previous one instead of pausing and starting all over with the next two or three notes. Makes it more continuous and much better than other tubers.
I’ve been watching your tutorials for a while a couple of years now, and you have definitely gotten so much more comfortable in front of the camera. I feel like you really let your personality shine through, and it’s great! I watch for the humor as much as the lesson at this point.
I have been playing this song since its release in 1978. I use the alternate voicings versus the open chords, as well. I really enjoyed your demonstration of the fills/licks used throughout the song. You've done a tremendous job. Thank you.
This is why I love your tutorials. You get right to the point without over complicating things. Some tutorials make it so confusing when it doesn't have to be. Thank You!
These might be my favorite guitar tutorials on the internet. They are so approachable and build like perfect blocks to understand the next one and encompass it. Keep up the great work really love these videos
being a longtime fan of Dire Straits this vid just made me realize what a classic song we all have in Sultans of Swing...so many explanations for us on how it's done in so many versions with so many instruments by so many generations of fans of just one immortal song. Damn!!!
Love how you breakdown the fingerings and also show the tabs at the same time. So many RUclipsrs don't break it down like that. They remind me of a guitar teacher I had where I basically paid him to show off/shred to me for half an hour. Great job! Thanks!
That happened to me too, paid for an hour and the tutor kept showing off. I didn’t really learn anything. However this is way more informative. I can’t do this yet, it’s been great to watch! 🤘
This song is such a right of passage. I’ve come back to it many times in the last five years or so. Ive finally been able to sing it decently while maintaining this strumming and fills. Nice lesson
I really appreciate your teaching style. It's straight to the point with no over explaining. You have excellent technique, also. You're a great player and a great teacher covering a great song! Liked and subscribed!
Perfect lesson video. Every aspect of this song was covered. Strumming, chords and leads. I really appreciate the musicianship and the lack of the adult star image we always get with these women playing guitar videos. This is about GUITAR. No BS. BRAVO!
I used to play guitar yearsss ago , i then moved to brass and woodwind (tuba and saxophone) then i picked up the guitar BUT with learning to play bass aswell with guitar , now I’ve learned bassline, im taught bass but self taught guitar so this is helpful, thanks !
Even after playing this song live for almost 20 years, this video was an informative delight, and beautifully explained. I'm surprised you didn't do the "twiddly bit at the end," as Mark describes it, since it's the most iconic signature lick of the whole song-but then again, every guitarist at Level 5 (me included) already knows how to do it. The wonderful filler licks you break down at 10:04 and 10:59 are the ones people forget, and they're the ones I never really figured out until I saw you nail them so precisely here. Thanks for taking the time to share your insights and beautiful playing. Putting aside all the "levels," I don't think there's any level of skill at which people would stop learning from you. If anything, the better they are, the more your teaching has to offer.
Hi, I have played the guitar, since, forever. Just think, you are so good that you can teach me new tricks for an old dog like me. And, I not, only will jump for you, but jump without a treat, because you are my treat. You are very good Musora.😘
This video is so well done-it's got me itching to pick up an electric guitar! 'Sultans of Swing' is an absolute classic. Can't wait to dive into the world of electric guitar and explore new sounds. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thank you so much for braking this iconic song down so that novice guitarists like me can dare to dream. Sounding 1% like the original is like achieving a lifelong dream. Keep up the great work and thanks again.
Best guitar tutorial. Awesome breakdown on the licks. I’ve always wanted to learn these licks but were too lazy until you laid them at my feet in such easy to understand terms. Thank you!!!!
You're one of the rarest female guitarists on the social media who is actually fully dressed up. I don't know what it is that most of them feel like they have to display a lot more than just their guitar playing skills. Respect from the bottom of my heart. Bless you.
If it takes so much effort to just unpack each pluck, pulloff, bend and hammer on, I wonder how much creativity goes into making these songs. It is mind boggling.
"Sultans of Swing" is so great that even my easy piano cover sounds good. Congratulations for this wonderful tutorial, it gives a lot of help to play this true musical gem 👏👏👏
Love this song and watched this video with absolutely no understanding about what you're talking about. It's so awesome that you're willing to give people technical advice on how to play this song!
I was listening to Sultans on the radio this morning thinking to myself I gotta learn this song. Tonight this video shows up in my feed. Great you just set me on the easy path to learn it right now. I guess it will be the demo song in the shop for the next coupe weeks. Thanks! Wonderful video.
Hi Ayla, ace vid and loving how you've got all those licks sorted. I've been playing this song for years (probably my all time fav song) and have played that last lick differently but it never quite sounded like for real. Now I've seen how you do it, my life's complete - you've got it! Thanks for that :)
What an awesome lesson on one of the smoothest guitar songs ever written. Really broke down what sounds like a complicated, difficult song into enough component parts that it was super simple to understand. Also WOW what a beautiful color on that Strat. I haven't seen the soft coffee color on the pick guard very often. Lovely instrument.
Great tutorial, i can play this on rhythm with a couple of licks but use a capo on 5th fret but going to try ur way and get those licks mastered one at a time , thanks so much ur a natural at teaching, big respect to you playing this song it's not an easy one , greetings from Scotland 🏴😁👍🙏🎸
I sti don't play guitar but these videos just really entertain and are so interesting and eventhough I don't play it myself I still learn about it in a way..
Ayla , How Ironic .. How Did You Know I Wanted To Learn How To Play “sultans “.,One Of My Favorite Dire Straits Songs !!!!! Just The Other Day I Tried Playing It , And It Did Not Sound Perfect ., Discouraged I Quit on or About The Third Level .But Really A Big Thank You For The Great Teaching And Tips On Perfection . Your Teaching Lessons Are Fun And Beautiful ..Just Like You , My Sincere ❤And Respects !!!!!🎸🎶👍👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🫶💎❗️
Just subscribed for a few reasons. Firstly, your teaching technique. Secondly, the overall structure and content of the content, being very well balanced and delivered. Thirdly, you're nearing 1m subscribers and deserve that Million, (good luck and congratulations in advance!). and Fourthly (finally), your humor! 'different', 'corny' and 'work in progress' 🤪🤪🤪
I think I just fell in love again😍😂. This was great, and love your humor. Overall made learning this song much more fun. Thanks again for a rad video 🍻
Thanks for covering that one off Guitar-Ayla! Knopfler has done some amazing guitar work and that's one of my favorite tunes. You also picked some of the most recognizable guitar licks to throw in there.
She's obviously (to me!) explaining at a level WAAAY beyond me!!! Even so, she is explaining everything in a way that , Wow! Yes! I think I might LEARN SOMETHING here!!! Thank you!!!
Thank you so much Ayla! I love dire straits and this is one of my favorite songs to play on guitar hero. I have recently begun learning electric guitar and this video helped me to play my first four chords ever.
I'm so happy for the future of music. That the kids are this talented and appreciative of the classics and dedicated to teaching. Good Stuff!!! Great lesson too!
Mark Knopfler is such a genius to come up with all of this masterpiece, i love the fact that he rather choose to develope his own finger picking than using a pick.
This is my all-time favorite song. I play the mandolin. I don't play the guitar but I knew that b flat was just one fret down from an a. Trying to teach my cousin how to chord it simple like this while I play some licks on the Mando. Thank you for this lesson.
Wow, I am absolutely stunned! I stumbled on this quite by accident, and I can't tell you how happy this video makes me. Mark Knopfler is one of my favorite artists, and this is one of my favorite songs. I've known how to play the chord progression for years, but I've never looked into adding the licks and fills that really give the song personality. This video breaks down some of the more recognizable passages and does so in a way that seems very accessible. I can't wait to try this out! You've got a new subscriber here. Maybe one day you can teach us how to play the live version! 😎
I have studied music, but they say, Stanley, you have an ear for music. I tune my friend's piano so well that it sounded so heavenly. All I need is one note sound. You are great Musora, you are so young, keep it up.😇😘
I've played this at level 5 for years and we play the same licks just with different positions on the fretboard. Good lesson! Also on the lick where you said you can hear the high E coming through quietly, you definitely can!
The fact that you have all your clothes on and let your talent do the talking is very respectful to me. I won’t subscribe to some channels because people think they have to show skin to get subs.
This was really handy to get the strumming pattern. I have been focusing on the first solo and some of the other parts but didn't really get a good feel for the start and this really helps. Its a lovely song and I love that I can even play parts of it. But its a mission to be able to play a lot if not all of this song to at least a basic level.
You have a very nice sound......he plays mainly bar chords though......! My mom and dad's neighbour Marsha, has a son called Reece who married Knopfler's niece. She said Mark was a very nice guy, she sat next to him at the wedding.
You are so charming and sweet - my daughter is learning to play, and I introduced her to your videos since you are not only a good teacher. You are a nice person. A real role model. 🙏
I’ve watched you for years’ I wish you many blessings and congratulations on your success’ ❤. You’re a super amazing lady !. You’re a fantastic instructor too❤.
Nice to see this pop up on my feed. Sultans of Swing live at Royal Albert Hall is one of my favorite performances of any song ever, and it's just a great song. Became a fan of Ayla's after seeing Calpurnia play on KEXP, then watching some covers on her channel. This is a great fusion of both!
What song should we do next? Let us know in the comments!

0:32 put your middle finger in (the 2nd fret of) the G-string. As a non-guitar player, I will try to perform this trick tonight.
As a non guitar player and a Sultans of Swing fan, watching this video gave me so much more appreciation for both.
For me that was one of the most rewarding parts of learning to play. So many 'so that's where that sound comes from!' moments.
What he said
Get a guitar.
Learn a few chords and you'll want to learn more. I'll never be able to barre or finger pick very well, but I sure have fun.
I don´t know what to say. I haven´t learned anything new since years. My guitars hanging on the wall, a constant reminder of what I wanted sometime in my past but stopped doing, and never really understood why. And this song has been on my learning list always.

Oh, yeah, I absolutely understand. I have to guitar shaped wall hangings too. Ayla is inspiring me to get playing again.

As someone who once danced along to Sultans of Swing as it blared out a car's speakers walking down a street in Midtown New York as it crawled down the road, this was great
This video makes me appreciate "Sultans of Swing" even more. One of my all-time favourites.
I really enjoy your lessons there is one suggestion a very minor one at that provide the app settings it’s got a great tone
I'm thrilled to hear that :)
Yes! Esp. the riff at the end.
‘I preemptively ate them first .. ‘ 😂😂😂😂😂
This is hands fucking down the funniest joke in history
"Miss I don't have my homework"
"Dog eat it again Jones?"
"Well he looked like he was going to soo I ate it first"
"...Jones..."
"Yes miss!"
"Go to the nurses office Jones..."
"Yes miss..."
Valid approach
Note where she found a pick later in the episode.....
Absolute beginner at 71, and you're not only playing my favourite song, but band to. Thank you young lady, wonderful instruction.😍🥰🤣
The most comprehensive guitar tutorial I've ever seen. Great explanations and detail!

Inspired me to change the video

You Are What My Generation Needed As A Teaching Tool.... I'm 60 and Had To Learn This By As Close As You Can Get...Great Lesson.

I'm not a Guitar player, but a sucker for everything Sultans of Swing.
And videos like yours are wonderful to understand pieces better.
Have you seen Yoni Schlesinger's covers? Incredible performance.

A wonderful exposition of a difficult number. Ayla is a natural teacher, leaves nothing out, and gives us all hope. Thank you.
Such a pretty and talented young lady. It really warms my heart that the next generation is keeping classic rock alive----Just beautiful!!!
This song is such a right of passage. I’ve come back to it many times in the last five years or so. Ive finally been able to sing it decently while maintaining this strumming and fills. Nice lesson

After playing this song for almost 30 years I am humbled and thoroughly impressed by this talented young musician & teacher! Thank you for this video!
I don’t know how to play the guitar, but just watching this video made me realize what a legendary this song is 😂

Respect from the bottom of my heart.
Bless you.
It’s sad they feel the need to resort to that. Especially when they are so talented.
This is the best tutorial for this song on the Internet. Thank you
Love this song and watched this video with absolutely no understanding about what you're talking about. It's so awesome that you're willing to give people technical advice on how to play this song!
Wow this is really detailed. Every note explained with tips. Wonderful.
I was listening to Sultans on the radio this morning thinking to myself I gotta learn this song. Tonight this video shows up in my feed. Great you just set me on the easy path to learn it right now. I guess it will be the demo song in the shop for the next coupe weeks. Thanks! Wonderful video.
This songs chord progressions and beautiful, beautiful lead fills are some of the best ever
This chord progression is called the "Andalusian Cadence".
Well played. I like how you taught/teach this song. Was easier to learn.
I just love your method of instruction, great job
Ayla, your guitar tutorials are nothing but fantastic. You are one of the best guitar lessons teacher on RUclips. Keep it up.
Great video. I went almost through every tutorial, and this is the best. Now I finally gonna learn. Thank you.
Hi Ayla, ace vid and loving how you've got all those licks sorted. I've been playing this song for years (probably my all time fav song) and have played that last lick differently but it never quite sounded like for real. Now I've seen how you do it, my life's complete - you've got it! Thanks for that :)
Complimenti...finalmente un sito con spiegazioni davvero ben fatte.❤
Hey Ayla, it makes me love this song even more. I love the song you make with your fingers. Merci beaucoup
Thank you so very very much! We can do that!!! Love you
Great lesson! Keep those classics comin'!
Enjoying your lessons. Hey Joe was my first and now your lessons seem to be refreshing and fun, thanks.

Man first time seeing this lady and her vibe is awesome. I also learned how to play sultans of swing! win all around!
Thanks for covering that one off Guitar-Ayla! Knopfler has done some amazing guitar work and that's one of my favorite tunes. You also picked some of the most recognizable guitar licks to throw in there.
Amazing playing and you explain it so well. Thank you. 😊
What a beautiful rounded tone, especially from the often very thin and harsh bridge pickup.
I literally just began learning this song this is such a crazy coincidence!!! Tysm!!
I am an acoustic guitar player this video is such well done it made me want to but an electric guitar. Soltans of swing is my favorite rock song.
Lovely..... You are doing good to a lot of them who may like to learn to play.
I always played by ear since 1991 without the pick.
the chords prorgression seems a spanish flamenco.
Right hand technique to play it is definitely flamenco.
I think he was just hungry one night and ate the picks 😂
se vuoi vedere un altro grande talento del finger picking cerca Matteo Mancuso, un giovane ragazzo Siciliano..la sua tecnica è incredibile.
Great job Ayla, always good to revisit these videos and see just how much I forgot. 👏👏
You’re an awesome player and instructor. Glad to have found you. Rock on Ayla. 🎼🎸👏👏
This is my all-time favorite song. I play the mandolin. I don't play the guitar but I knew that b flat was just one fret down from an a. Trying to teach my cousin how to chord it simple like this while I play some licks on the Mando. Thank you for this lesson.

Wait.... is the dog ok?
Yes
No.
Barking in 🎶
I've played this at level 5 for years and we play the same licks just with different positions on the fretboard. Good lesson! Also on the lick where you said you can hear the high E coming through quietly, you definitely can!
Beautiful... What scale is the song in?
Your mom
this is just the best tutorial ever made on this song! congrats guitar-george 's daughter
Mark is like John Mayer. He makes me depressed when I attempt to really dig deep into his playing. No one can sound like Mark.
I love these "5 levels" videos you do, they are EXCELLENT
The fact that you have all your clothes on and let your talent do the talking is very respectful to me. I won’t subscribe to some channels because people think they have to show skin to get subs.
It's also fine if anyone wants to do that, cause freedom of expression and stuff.
@@notmedudeyeah but fuk em. That's also freedom of speech
EXCELLENT LESSON! love the levels...i'm hovering between 4 and 5 figuring out the timing and rhythm of it all. Love your style and humor as well.
No. That's not how Mark plays it.
This was really handy to get the strumming pattern. I have been focusing on the first solo and some of the other parts but didn't really get a good feel for the start and this really helps. Its a lovely song and I love that I can even play parts of it. But its a mission to be able to play a lot if not all of this song to at least a basic level.
Love how you show us numpties how these iconic songs can be played. Watching you and in my head, I am MK. Out loud? Nah, you don't want to know 😂😂
You have a very nice sound......he plays mainly bar chords though......!
Great musician! And beauty. Thanks for the video.
This song is just chefs kiss*. And she’s plays it effortlessly. So well it makes me think I could actually play this 😂song
Great instruction! Thank you!
This is a great fusion of both!
this woman is incredible.
Great video - You took us from "this is Dm" to "here are some Knopfler licks" in 12 minutes! Next? F C Cus4 C, etc. - the rest of the song.
Very talented young lady. Even got the feel and emotion of the song down. Great instructional video. Touche !!
