He came to South Africa years ago, and I saw him. An intimate kind of show in a smallish theater. One song he just put a simple stool on the stage, only him, jamming away. I can't even remember the song, but I remember the feeling, the skill he had, everything he could do with that one guitar in that moment. It felt like this was a case where a person was doing the exact thing "the universe wanted him to do".

Way back in 1976 myself and a friend found ourselves in the Old Covent Garden in London wandering around the various bars and pubs there. Early in the evening we came by the Rock Garden Bar/Restaurant/Club where there was a bunch of guys unloading instruments from an old van. We didn't take much notice at the time but as we passed the Rock Garden on our way back a couple of hours later we could hear this interesting music coming up from the basement. We stood there for a minute or two before paying our entrance fee and we spent the rest of the evening watching this band called Dire Straights. They were brilliant. You could tell they were a band destined to go places.
That was one of those nights where you unexpectedly encounter something a bit special.
I've seen Dire Straights a number of times since and they have put on some of the best concerts I've seen (and I've seen a few). They never let you down.
Mark Knopfler just gets better and better. Almost 50 years later I'm still listening and I have to say thanks for the music Mark.

Knopfler's very wise words: Yes, people love the iconic "twiddly bits!" And I love the way Knopfler's casual improvisations here are so uniquely "Knopfler!" His sound is so distinctive, and personal - and so wonderfully different from all those of his generation, like me, who grew up listening to, and copying, the young Clapton of Cream. Knopfler, when he poured out of our radios in '79, with "Sultans of Swing," was, and remains, a breath of guitar fresh air!

We only have one more pint to order. and the bar closes. boy I have a lot of fortitude because the last comment before was a year ago and I have never been there when the last round at any bar was called for but I have because of the music.

Quick story about “Money For Nothing” and his genius: Knopfler was a HUGE fan of Billy Gibbons and ZZ Top, especially what he called Gibbons’ “Dirty Riff” guitar sounds. He called Gibbons directly to ask his secret for the now signature sound and Billy Gibbons told him “There’s no WAY I’ll ever give away that. You can figure it out like I did.” So, Knopfler started working on the guitar riff for “MFN” and decided he actually liked his twist on that sound better than his intended results. I think he made the right choice.

One of the pinnacle songs for guitarists to learn. Just look at the number of covers on RUclips. When it first came out the big questions was, "How is he playing like that?". Before RUclips, before MTV, we could only listen to the album and unless we saw Dire Straits in concert or on television Mark's technique was baffling to a great number of amateur guitar players. It was so joyous, so brilliant, so fast and amazing we could only take the ride and enjoy the mystery. Mark, thanks for "Sultans" and all your other great songs over the years.
