      It is just as cynical and arrogant, as the critic, to claim that another person will never know, or has not known victory nor defeat. I think it's fair to argue that every person knows defeat and has, in whatever way they have been able, to dare greatly. Dismissing someone else's triumphs and tragedies as neither true defeat, nor daring greatly, is ironically an extremely cynical, dismissive and arrogant point of view.

      You gotta make bad decisions to appreciate the good ones, the trick is to make the bad decisions on purpose so to try and control the fallout. You don't want to make the bad decisions when you can't control the fallout, like walking up on your home burning to the ground. You might want to do yourself the favor and take the high road that time. If you never allow yourself to build up to your breaking point it might just take you by surprise when you least expect it. It might be a good idea to try it on some simple shit a time or two before it really counts. If you remove your right arm you would no longer have a left, you would just have one. So too with up and down, daytime and nighttime, right and wrong, in and out, sunshine and rain, celebration and suffering, win and lose. Living without morals is crazy but you couldn't celebrate a grand slam if you could do it with your eyes closed and you just couldn't miss. There is no such thing as forgiveness, we pay as we go; however, there is no need to assess an accident still in progress.

    The second half, starting with: " The Credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena..." was on a certificate that I received in 1978 at the age of 11 years old, from a football coach that I had in the Pee-Wee Football League. I cherished that Certificate more than any other award which I had received during my life; more than any trophies or plaques. Because of the WORDS that were on the Certificate. I memorized those WORDS, and I've spoken them many times in order to motivate, and inspire others.

The place I stood back to reflect was at the very end when you’re telling the “foul-mouthed reprobate instigators” to get away or you’ll “give all of them a taste of their eternal place of permanence”. It’s humbling & a relief to realize that as human beings we are more alike than different. The thing that can separate us from each other comes out of a daily reckoning with how close we are to the values we hold most dear, learning thru trial & error, admitting errors & cutting our losses when it’s necessary for a greater good. It’s the path less traveled as it takes courage to love ourselves & others through the necessary losses that enable progress.

      However, I think I get the gist. I assume that you are aware of my faith; That's, my convictions, my BELIEF, and my conversion. I'm 53. I'll be 54 in another month or two. I have a story, like everyone else. Basically after trying many paths, and still failing and falling, I finally came to a point where I needed to SUBMIT to the Savior of the World, Yeshua HaMashiach, JESUS CHRIST. I really didn't want THAT, or HIM to be the only (right) Way out, but that's WHAT happened.
      Out? Out of what? Out of my reckless, frivolous, selfish, self seeking, self centered, egotistical, empty, rebellious, undisciplined, FOOLISH lifestyle.
      You know, the way of the FLESH, the way of the world, the way of materialism, and then some. There had to be more out of LIFE than women, sex, popularity, making money, living lavishly.
      What was my GOAL? What was important? What WAS the meaning of LIFE?
      Well, after TWO failed marriages, 4 lost children through a lopsided unjust family court system, early resignation from a good municipal job, and then after huge success in Martial Arts, Acting in theatre and commercials, good success as a salesman for the largest oldest privately owned Milk Company in NYC, I spent some time in Rikers Island in 2002 - 2003. One year later ... Released, and free to try anything, I moved to Montana. Another year later, after various attempts & failures, I moved back to N.Y., and N.J., and I began a LONG hard road of quasi repentance, but serious in depth Study of the Holy Bible.
      The short of the long is; from 2004 till NOW, I've narrowed down my Pilgrims Progress journey to this: the TWO most important things in LIFE are TRUTH and LOVE. "Truth without love is brutality and love without truth is hypocrisy." Warren Wiersbe.
      I'm working on a balance.
      On June 5th 2016 I found
      the GREATEST woman in the world, when I finally stopped looking. On June 5th of 2016, in a small church in Keyport N.J. I met my Bride to be. We married on September 22nd, 2016
      Three and a half months later.
      I had made a covenant with God, and my eyes 👀, to "NOT," LOOK upon a woman with lust. Job 33:1
      Yes, I consider myself a Christian. But I'm not quite like the 501c3 Churchianity cultural christians of America. I have many different views of the interpretation of Gods Holy Word than mainstream modern day protestant doctrine teaches. Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of people who share my perception of Biblical Doctrine, but they are few and scattered abroad, and some right here; We are Gods Remnant.
      I'm not "better," than anyone, but I'm certainly
      "BETTER," then I used to be.
      One of the things that differs in my view of Gods teaching from most Christians is that although many of God's teachings are ABSOLUTE, there are also MANY Dichotomies in Scripture that people would prefer to make into a SINGLE Generalization that applies to EVERYONE ALL THE TIME. That's a problem with NOT having Spiritual eyes to see that Gods ETERNAL, INFINITE MIND is ABOVE and BEYOND our finite thinking.
      I believe EVERYONE needs to accept or reject THIS crucial statement made by my Lord and Savior: John 14:6, "Jesus said to him,
      I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man comes to the Father, but by Me."
      God is Love. 1st John 4:8, and 4:16
      And He(Jesus Christ) is the Lover of my SOUL, and by His HOLY SPIRIT my spirit is QUICKENED (made ALIVE).
      This is the meaning of "Born Again." He "IS," my first LOVE. 1st John 4:19
      I'm still a work in progress, but I'm a far cry from where I used to be.
      Enough said, ... for now.
      However, more will be revealed.
      By the way, Proverbs says, God has even made the wicked for the Day of Doom.
      Revelation 12:11, "They (the believers) overcame him (the devil), by the BLOOD of the Lamb (Jesus Christ) ✝, and by the word of their testimony; and they did not love their lives unto the death."

    I never thought I would be a doctor, even though it’s been my goal half my life. I took the MCAT (medical college admissions test) 4 times. I just started residency this month after finishing medical school in May 2021. This speech has powered me through all of it

    A great man with an incredible story. He was a man that inspired men then, inspires men now and will continue to inspire men. He was shot before he was supposed to give a speach and he still deliver his message, talking for 90 minutes after the shooting. Young men need examples to look up to and this man is one of them.

      I think we are upon the downward slope of what will be the greatest explosion of wealth,knowledge and productivity with the 4th industrial revolution.
      The use of A.I in every aspect of our lives. The future is golden and it will have unimaginable prosperity.
      When we can experience such great quality content anytime, anywhere and any device and to know its gonna get more accessible and widespread in decades to come. What's upon us is unthinkable.

      @@markyuto6820 yea..our reliance on technology will lessen our overall ability...im amazed by my tribes historical hunters, men of the past had to know how to build a hut, do carpentry, go farming, know about plants, the cycle of the sun and moon to determine what time of the year it is, and so on....we have increased knowledge in general/ useless facts, info or in our particular line of work..but no real understanding of the world and our surrroundings, nature etc..intellectuals, good engineers, scientists, doctors have become more intelligent..but apart from that, the common man might have become less wise

    I have been pounding (figuratively) this into my oldest grandson (10) who is so gifted, but has a fear of failure or being mocked, so when we talk on the phone or in person I always ask. Are you still in the game or have you moved to the seats in the bleachers? Finer motivational words have never been spoken than the man in the arena.

    The other quote that has always inspired me just as much as Teddy’s quote in this video is this one by William James: “Keep the faculty of effort alive in you by a little gratuitous exercise every day. That is, be systematically ascetic or heroic in little unnecessary points, do every day or two something for no other reason than that you would rather not do it, so that when the hour of dire need draws nigh, it may find you not unnerved and untrained to stand the test. So with the man who has daily inured himself to habits of concentrated attention, energetic volition, and self-denial in unnecessary things. He will stand like a tower when everything rocks around him, and when his softer fellow-mortals are winnowed like chaff in the blast.”

    TR was the real deal. There is a short biography of him called something like A Lion in the Whitehouse. Quick read, and you'll be amazed that his real life is more amazing than most fictional heroes.

Well, there are accounts of his slaves loyalty to him far exceeding anything he could or did ask of them, including begging for seed to plant crops because the war left him so broke that he couldn't afford to buy it. I suppose it's all anecdotal. But there are plenty of anecdotes of people who loved and were fiercely loyal to him that a statement like yours sounds mighty empty without facts to back it up.
      ...or did your liberal arts professors skip the fact based learning, and just go straight to the name calling identity politics parts.

      In a time when black people could not safely be free, some men held slaves to protect them and not out of a deficit of respect/character. It was a sad, awful time; people of color were safer as property than as free people. Not every slave owner was a monster who thought slavery was right and black people were inferior. George Washington, though known as a bit of a bully within the military apparatus, was said to be extremely well thought of by his slaves and servants. I expect he was the sort of man who had no patience for arrogant men, a man who tended to look out for the less fortunate. Consider that he was enemy #1 to the British crown, not just guilty of treason but of leading an army of men to do the same. Usually it takes someone who thinks in terms of ideals, and who thinks of others, to risk so much on just a small chance of winning against what was at that time the greatest military power in the world.

      I'm reasonably sure that if George Washington saw how far we have come, he would smile. He would not be upset that slavery is illegal and that people of every ethnicity are named equal. He would be proud to stand beside Obama. I'm not sure whether he'd be quick to abandon the sexist views of his time, but I expect he is the sort to see the parallels and come around to modern thinking. But we don't have the luxury to know for sure. We can only know what was said of him in the time he lived, and those were good things.

      If you are looking for someone to dislike, I might suggest Andrew Jackson. He was not such a great guy, and he spent most of his presidency trying to grossly exceed his authority in ways that would make us all cringe with ethical dismay/disgust. In the contest for "worst president we've ever had", the list of contenders is short but he's actually probably the favorite (despite our recent political history; AJ was that awful).

      @@adcyuumi Wilson was the worst. FDR is definitely up there. As all war mongers should be. Obama, Pappi Bush and Jr, LBJ, Truman, Lincoln (his freeing of thr slaves was admirable but not through massive war, debt and conscription which is a form of slavery.)
      I don't know much about Jackson other than he got cheated out of an election and then created a populist movement that became the Democrat party.
      I have some history to brush up on.

    I read most of his books and writings and I came yo admire this man called Theodore Roosevelt. Not because he was president; I know the least about his times as President. I got to know him during all his endeavors out West and all around the world. He lived, traveled and bedded down in jungles with the lowly and uneducated yet treated them not much different then those he had daily dealings with in Washington. He was a humble man and never expected more than was due to the rest of his fellow travelers. In the jungles of South America as in Africa he took his turn hunting for meat when rations ran low and shared precious water with his carriers while suffering the greatest hardship with constant threat to his life! He never asked for privilege even in the face of death. He fought in the jungles of Cuba and stayed with the last of his man if need be. He could stay on his horse an entire day and he often did when cattle was rounded up nd moved north from his ranch out west! He did the job of an able cow man and had the respect of all the tough wild men in cattle country long time ago. He roped cattle, transported cattle and slept with the rest of the cowboys with his head on his saddle under the starts, often under great hardship! Yet, how many Americans know much about this man who was one of our Presidents?

    I've carried a printed version of this speech with me for 30 years now. I look at it daily. It has served me WELL. When ever I doubted if I should DO something or complain about something, I reminded myself to "GET IN THE RING, MFer!" I'm now unbelievably successful (in a "George Bailey" kind of way) and I owe a lot of it to this message from Teddy.

I see an America that has forgotten the glory and the reward of the strenuous life. Just as Theodore Roosevelt in the election of 1912 could see no other hope for the country but to seek a third party, THE BULL MOUSE PARTY.     This reminds me of the man who was potentially the greatest baseball player who ever lived. He never struck out, he never missed a fly ball, he never had a ground ball get past him, and he never made a bad throw. The only thing that kept him out of the Hall of Fame was nobody could get him to put his beer down and come play.

    I needed this. I'm old now and face my eminent demise . Being born poorer than most can imagine, it has been a struggle to get a foothold in life. Working hard doesn't ALWAY mean success as described by society. I look back at failure and value hope. With hope now fading I can differentiate between want and need. So many times I climbed the mountain of success to where I could see the summit and fell short. Strangely, I've resisted becoming bitter in defeat. It's not in me to enjoy being the biggest loser but I deplore self pity.
    "A sparrow freezes and falls lifeless from a branch and never knows Self Pity. "

    This speech is what I visualize when I go whitewater rafting. It's one of my favorite things to do on a river. Whenever I'm there, at the top of a Class V rapid, surrounded by towering cliffs & canyons on both sides, that's my arena.

    What a great historical speech from which all of us can learn still today! Somtimes life can be hard and unjust, but if we don't "step into the arena" and take up the fight against the obstacles we cannot win. It's always worth taking up the fight, no matter how hard it might be, even if you don't know the outcome. We all can learn from hardship, which only makes us stronger if we accept it and believe in victory.
    I really like these words a lot: "The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming." Whoever is reading this, I wish you lots of strength in your battle and that 2021 will lead you out of the arena as a victorious man. Never give up, the sweat and blood are not in vain.

    This is how I got over the anxiety of funding my company: I told myself that if I fail, I at least failed while daring greatly. I could look in the mirror and tell myself that I'm not one of these timid souls who had a great idea and vision but didnt act on it out of fear. The ghosts of unfullfilled potential will not haunt me about this.

In today's political climate, regardless of which side of the aisle you support, I think we can all agree that we need more leaders like Rough-and-Ready Teddy.

    This excerpt of President Roosevelt’s speech at Sorbonne in Paris 23 April 1910 is masterful. A young soldier in 1989 wrote it calligraphy and gave it to me on his way to his first duty station. Every day is a day in the arena. You have to look yourself in the mirror and ask yourself, “did I do my best?” If the answer is no, then find out why not. Was it lack of motivation? Lack of training? Correct whatever is holding you back and try harder tomorrow. No one can be perfect. The best that you can do is high achievement. I’ve always heard it said, “practice makes perfect.” I say be careful what you practice. Because if you practice the wrong things, then you’ve perfected them. You have to keep striving for yourself, family, friends, community, and country. Never give up !!! Put God in the forefront of all you say and do !!!
    Another favorite:
    How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these.

    I’m going on a small tangent here…I won my weight loss challenge at my gym after becoming equal 3rd in a similar situation back in 2018 but tonight I won outright First and I no one expected me to do it and after watching this throughout my challenge I’m no longer the afterthought, I won!!! 👏🙌💪
    I lost 12 kgs on my own and now I have to keep it off. Thank you Teddy Roosevelt, you’re speechless kept me in the fight.

    I turned green today and the company commander gave this speech as i dawned my beret and army of one star patch. one of the proudest moments of my life.

    In the century of panic attacks, paranoia, drugs and living for the moment. These verses come to us as salvation in the darkness; words of wisdom depicting a character we can long for and strive throughout our lives. What these lines represent is not perfection, but rather a way a man can interpret difficulties in life. A point of view of a winner, that is. And that is the best way to go.

    Theodore is truly a rare human and a man I was I could have experienced first hand. I strive to hold a 10th of the mans wisdom and I’d be honored to be considered a doer by his standards

    I read this speech out loud in front of our church recently. We had all given ourselves to an important program that we ended up closing down. I knew how we could be tempted to be discouraged and lose the important momentum that comes with a big effort in church. Never give up. Never surrender.

    This quote was on the wall of our football locker room over 50 years ago when I was in high school. It inspired me to stay in football through all four years, though I was never any better than second string. And it has inspired me through my whole life, leading me to repeatedly attempt new things - some I succeeded at, and some I did not. But it has always kept me in the arena.

    These are the words of a great man. You can tell how much experience, and highs and lows, and humiliation and triumph lies behind them. It's like he summed up his entire life experience in one speech.

    I feel an undeniable happiness that my great great grandfather shares his birth year with teddy. I didn't get to meet him but I know he was a wise man like teddy was.

      Great to read that. Sometimes a simple idea can trigger a change.
      Strive to build yourself into a man of character and strength, a man of discipline and self-control, a trustworthy man who puts his skills in the service of others and you will be fulfilled in life.

    I like this speech. It shows the value of greatness even at the cost of failure. It is something to be admired as those that do not do are just that. A do nothing

    This speech changed my life, like really. It brings forth all the emotions a human can feel in less than 3 minutes. Leaving you breathless and empty, full of questions and resentment... Yet it fills you with courage you never knew you had, logic to overpower the most complex situations in your life and it clears the fog thats been building up in your head. After those 3 minutes, you are if you've actually listened a changed person. I would never in my life think that a speech that is over a 100 years old would be the key to change in my life. Thank you Teddy, if you only knew that this would inspire and change people so long after youre gone.

    I can definitely see why my third great grandfather gave my second great grandfather the middle name Theodore! This man is on a whole other level of legendary!

    As I'm sitting at work 75 days from retiring from the US Air Force someone mentioned this speech to me. It was a recruiter from ITA International, LLC. The told the story of ITA got it's name from "in the arena". Through several tours of war throughout my career I've been in and out of the arena. Now I find myself heading into a new journey. This is a very empowering speech and one I will come back to often.

    It's always been this man who commanded my deepest fascination from the youngest of ages. Even now, at 41, hearing words he crafted so long ago, for the first time I'm enraptured but, not surprised.
    In hearing these words, I see a description of myself. Looking back across the gulf of my life, now, I can now hold my head high again, like a king in rags.
    Thank you Mr. President. I was beginning to slip into cold indifference from the end of my longest struggle. The cause I most passionately spent myself on.
    Time to arise and jump into the fray with a joyful heart

    These are the words of an achiever. Always set a higher goal. Always treat your current state as a platform to rise from. Lest one grows stagnant and forgets the way of success do to inactivity.
