- On November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address on the site of one of the bloodiest and most decisive battles of the Civil War.
Lincoln’s brief address would be remembered as one of the most important speeches in American history.
“Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?”
― Abraham Lincoln
"Heaping coals upon their head" to quote the Bible
THAT is an excellent quote.

Abraham Lincoln once said "And in the end, its not the years in your life that count. Its the life in your years." Truely one of the greatest Americans to ever grace this nation.
And for those who believe that freeing the Slaves had no part in the course of this Civil War, remember while in an argument with another politician [[ who was attempting to justify Slavery ]] Lincoln replied '' if Slavery isn't wrong, then nothing is wrong ''.
Equality is for all.
He was great man. But the statement “who authorized you to enslave people” was uttered by Second Caliph of Muslims namely Omar Bin Khataab. Twisting history has a history in the US.
@@NooraTS20000 Omar was killed by a slave whom he refused to help when the latter was wronged by his unjust Arab master.
Omar's son then killed a bunch of random non-Arabs in retaliation for his father's assassination. He was let go by those in power.
So they were slave owners AND racists. Don't pretend that they were examples of justice and non-discrimination.
Islam has allowed slavery and the practice persists to this day among certain muslin groups and communities.
And Lincoln park once said “in the end it doesn’t even matter”
“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”
― Abraham Lincoln
This is sooo true
Think Different - Thought Provoking Ideas Well put, especially in these days
The leftists in the country are destroying America. They are tearing down the statues of their founding fathers, including Lincoln.
Amazing how this applies so much today for the pseudo-liberals in India as well.
Yep
“Whatever you are, be a good one.”

Hello
A House Divided Against Itself

“You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.” - Abraham Lincoln

How fortunate Americans were to have this man as one of it’s sons. Truly, one of the greatest men who ever lived. (from an Australian).

This man is the embodiment of what American principles, character and America as a whole was about. Not being an American myself, these are the Americans I grew up reading about making me admire and respect the country and it's place in the world. Now for some reason, things feel drastically different with everything.
Yes greed selfishness hate and corporation has taken over the us in this presnt time. That looks like a french flag you have there. Wich brings me back to some of the louie kings in france centuries ago louie the 14th (sorry don't know the romein numerals for it) was apparently guillotined during one of the revolutions so I've heard anyway and I don't know how many other King Louie's followed that face but eventually from what I understand the monarchy was abolished in France but I don't remember from history when that happened.
There are still some good americans here but it seems hard to find anyone much like that anymore.
I as an American, I agree it is just like a quote from Lincoln in fact he said: "The money powers prey upon the nation in times of peace and conspire against it in times of adversity. It is more despotic than a monarchy, more insolent than autocracy, and more selfish than bureaucracy. It denounces as public enemies, all who question its methods or throw light upon its crimes. As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money powers of the country will endeavor to prolong it’s reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed.

50 years ago I memorized this speech for my 9th grade english class. And to this day I can still recite most of it from memory. Lincoln new that preserving the ground and the dedication of 2 armies meant that if we did not learn then this nation would fail, for me this still holds true ! It is now 2021 and we are at a crossroads again. Are we going to let it fail because we as a people have grown Niaeve and forgotten that it is our country and not your or mine but belongs to all of us. I fear that this nation after such a long history is going to fall to the way side and be forgotten simply because we have forgotten how to work together and stand together again as , One Nation Under God Indivisable With liberty and Justice for All.
I likewise memorized it 50 years ago and do a fair recitation today. Lincoln’s sentence structure can be challenging.
I could have written this. I was just reciting it from memory but had to fight through the difficult final third. "It is for us the living rather..."
"But in a larger sense we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hollow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add & detract." This phrase is what struck me most.
I was the local Scout Chaplain for many years and had the honor of reading this speech at a Memorial Day Celebration at a local War memorial a few years ago. A group of Amish were putting on a roof across the street and stopped to listen, being visibly moved. These words are so powerful. I hope we are still worthy of them.
I’ve always considered The Gettysburg Address to be one of the greatest pieces of writing in the history of our nation, but recently learning that one of my 4x great grandfathers fought at Gettysburg… it speaks so much more emotionally to me now.
It still brings me to tears ! Thank you , President. Lincoln.
He was so inspiring! He makes me want to fight for a better world for us all! Truly a man of great vision!
Men fought for a better nation for all of us, for him. You are not alone.

One of the best sculpted speeches I've ever had the honour to read or hear. I expect it was as eloquently orated as it as it was word smithed. The world needs more striding Collosses like him. US citizen's should concentrate on the common denominator of the American centeredness than their rightness or leftness. They're the envy of the world. Respect him!
And yet. he scribbled it on the back of an envelope and looking back said it was embarrassing because of it's brevity. Historians attribute this to the grave-like silence that fell over the crowd after he sat down. All the other speeches were vigorously applauded. This one resulted in reverent contemplation.
Am not from America but after revising what President Abraham Lincoln said it's indeed no wonder that democracy is still present all over the world
I knew about this noble man when i was in 5th standard. I read about his struggle against poverty in his childhood. The incident when he brought book from his friend for one night and he fell asleep in midnight .when he woke up next morning the book was totally destroyed by rain water dripping from his roof since he was living in mud house. When he told about this to his friend ,he makes two deals .one either u return my book as it was or work on my Field for a week. Since A Lincoln was so poor that he choose second deal and worked day and night on his friend,s farm . Moreover he used to write on his wall with coal since he had no pen and paper . It made me saddened everytime. He was shot killed eventually. A great president this earth planet ever have
He was indeed a true man
Long live Lincoln's legacy.

THE BEST SPEECH OF A.TRULY.GREAT.PRESIDENT
I'm not from the USA, but I had to learn that speech in my English class, it's still one of my favorites
"The world will little note nor long remember what we say here!" With resp Mr Pres. Your articulate words and eloquent delivery have etched their deeds on the souls of unborn generations everywhere.
Tragic that within a century of it's Declaration of Independence from Great Britain (GB) in 1776, the US was at war with itself in 1868. Can't imagine what Native America made of European settlers importing their characteristic contentiousness.
...and yet the speech itself pushes focus away from the speech rhetoric, and towards the history of those dead...and what we should do about it in the unfinished work still before us.
The second greatest speech given was MLK ‘s “ I have a dream “ on the steps of the Lincoln memorial in 1963 .

President John F Kennedy's "Moon Speech," is my favorite Speech, as Kennedy shares a "vision" for the United States for the next seventy-five years.
President A. Lincoln is a noble and humble leader with integrity. I love this speech and it gives me the chills every time I listen to it. I know we can all relate to it no matter what walks of life we're from. I quote, "It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not die in vain". I think about my ancestors and how they dedicated their lives to pave the way for my family, my posterity and me. I have so much respect.
We so often take such things for granted but after 66 years in this world and long exposed to the conflicts this nation has survived I can't help but read this with tears streaming down my face.
I think this speech confirms the depth, genius and unparalleled uniqueness of him.
People have fought and died for ideas of what America ought to be. in this address I found him asking the American people to have the courage to be Americans.
"it is our responsibility" he says. lest we forget and have to learn the lesson again.
this speech changed America
You know how many people define eras for America? Such as pre Vietnam War America and post Vietnam War America? Pre 911 America and Post 911 America? Well we should always remember Pre Lincoln America and Post Lincoln America
“The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.” I’m not trying to let you down Abe. I do my best

Yes. The Greatest Speech in American History.
My hero since I learned to read and write. In junior school I used to break down every time while reciting, "Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells!/ But I, with mournful tread,/ Walk the deck my Captain lies,/ Fallen cold and dead." That was close to four decades ago.
President Lincoln needs to speak, and we need to listen, one more time. Not just the United States of America, but all humanity.
Beautifully said. Thank you.
The best delivery of this speech is made outside, as it was pronounced by Lincoln himself, speaking with a loud and projecting voice, reaching as far as he could, to a very large audience. The rhythm of the piece was created with that foreseen circumstance in mind. The words have to be individually launched with force, with long pauses between them, and with the effort of the speaker marked, as fighting against a blowing wind. This brings back the text to the battlefield, conveying its size and the noise and movement that took place there, still echoing from the entrails of the earth. A speaker must be winded at the end, to convey the effort needed, and a sense of what the last measure of devotion might entail to those who were there. No one sheltered in a room can deliver this piece as it should be heard.

I didn’t get educated in the USA,but we studied US history and we have to memorize the Gettysburg address as part of our oral/verbal test. President Lincoln is one of my favorite presidents before president Reagan.
Growing up in the South, I wonder how much different history would have been if Lincoln had lived. The Republicans at that time wanted to punish the south, Lincoln was for reconciliation and peace.
In the 90's we went to Gettysburg. We could feel the ghosts there at the picket fence bordering the wheat field. We were in awe of the bravery on both sides. None of us would have marched into the fire at the wheat field. Does bravery like that still exist? Sadly almost 160 years we as a county are still wrestling with the consequences of that war. Blame does not heal, understanding is the best salve for that open wound.
A Southerner shot the US's best president over slavery. Abraham Lincoln wrote a letter to a Southern mother who lost lost all 3 of her sons in the Civil War. He expressed his remorse for their loss. She tore up his letter and threw it in the fire.
All the understanding that needs to happen is that half of America is ignorant and hateful. If Americans can shoot and kill Lincoln, if they can tell lies about him, they can do the exact same about Donald Trump and Obama.
Rest In Peace Abraham Lincoln🇺🇸🙏🏽

ABRAHAM LINCOLN, “GETTYSBURG ADDRESS” (19 NOVEMBER 1863)
[1] Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.
[2] Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
[3] But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate-we can not consecrate-we can not hallow-this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.
We will never forget❤️🇺🇸
If we as people don't study our history, we will be bound to repeat it. This speech which was spoken over 157 year ago still rings true for or current state as a nation. "A house divided can't stand" unfortunately we are divided more now then ever.
