I just wanted to say that this poem appeared on my feed the day I was planning the route of the coward, the loss of my own hope in myself, and now I can stop thinking about it on every second I live, I stopped drinking, stopped gaming, I said no more to my addictions. I'm studying, trying, fighting for my own place. And I won't give up I promise, but whoever runs this channel on RUclips; I just wanted to thank you. I'll for sure will never meet you and maybe this message you'll never read, but to me you're important now, and probably in years to come. I put effort into my studying, and I managed to get a scholarship, I placed effort in my body, and now I am training daily, I am not drinking at all and I wake up with energy to face off the marvel that it's a day. As Kipling will say "fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds of distance run". I may not be doing the whole sixty but it's way better than what I were two months ago, so to whoever reads this, please, I know you don't even know me, but don't give up, life has its own beauty but it for sure doesn't come in a silver plate. I hope you can at least give it another chance with a different perspective. And thank you everyone for your kind words. Be thankful for being here, despite all, you're alive, you're breathing and life can be enjoyed, YOU WILL FALL, TRIP, STUMBLE, that's a FACT, but the important thing is WHAT YOU DO after hitting the ground with your face. GET UP and keep moving, stop stagnation. I kept doing that, standing up, now I have a job, I live by myself, my own rules, I have shifted my life 180 degrees and 3 stories higher (my new apt is on the third floor, yes it's a rental but IT'S MY FLOOR), it's incredible what a daily routine and dedication to achieve your own goals can bring. Don't give up, I didn't, you can't, you're valuable. Stay safe, and be happy. Oct, 2023. This life is good, don't give up. I came across this video again because I felt I owed it a second hearing. And I stumbled upon my old comment. I'm on a way better place now.
Keep studying and improving your life. Always try to see things from the other person 's point of view. Be always kind, honest and truthful not just to others but to yourself. There's a bright new world out there waiting for you to embrace it. YOU can and will make a difference ..Keep up the good work.
Anybody can fool the whole world, but himself. To be really honest with ourselves is a huge achievement. A man who can defeat his addictions, can defeat anything.
Frenchie, my friend, I'm so glad you didn't give in. Don't EVER give in! I once was in a bad place myself, but I resisted that pain. Now, years later, I grow more determined with each passing day to get up again, and again, and again no matter what anyone throws my way. We get but one life, and if you live 90 years and only know a few moments of happiness, it's worth the wait. Life is good.
It clearly tells us to " not become prideful of what you have because it will all come to an end when you reach your death " . Rudyard used simple words to say a line this big . It's truly incredible.

I read this poem at my father's funeral today, and this video really helped me practice and prepare for that moment. I've been reciting the words along with the reader whilst listening to this every morning the last couple of weeks, trying to get the right tempo and learn most of it off by heart. All went well when it was my time to stand up and do it myself, so thank you for this and your other videos which have helped me through difficult times.
This poem was given to me by my mother when I graduated 5th grade. I didnt understand it then, but as I got older and began to understand the words and the meaning of the poem, I've tried to live my life by the words of this poem. It has been the one constant source of inspiration all my life. I've passed this poem down to my 2 sons, with the hope that one day it will help them as much as it has helped me.

We had to memorize this poem in High School in 1970 by orders of our English teacher and I managed to learn it and then speak it out.I hated doing it and I dont know why really but I did and passed.Yrs and yrs later now that Im older and wiser it makes sense of old fashioned values that I can appreciate - even tho Im not a man. Thank you.
i liked it since a small girl - there was music to it by Rodger Whittier my dad played, I thought you know ? that’s some good insight, even as a girl...
Although we all know 'man' refers to all human beings here.. I feel Poets should've written it in that sense only; gender neutral words that don't make us adjust something each time in our brains. Wonderful poem tho.
@@JohnVKaravitis...for some reason that poem hit me like a ton of bricks during my idealistic youth. And 43 years later it still does. I gave it to both my sons when they graduated high school.
THE GREATEST POEM EVER WRITTEN!!!!!!! IF "If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream-and not make dreams your master; If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’ If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And-which is more-you’ll be a Man, my son!"
I learned about this poem two years ago, and I told my father about it. He told me exactly this. I believe there is a lesson to be learned from it. Imagine being a father and writing such a powerful poem, scraping up what you've learned to give direction to your son... only for it to become so suddenly insignificant. It fucking breaks my heart.
But in those last moments, if these words were not spoken, could he have met death so well? Death comes for us all. Some run a long race and some run a short race. It isn't about how long the race is but how you run it. I like to think that this helped his son face the life he was given. His words do not lose their meaning because his son's race was short.
@@forsak3th I don't know man. Nothing can replace the love of a father, that's for sure. But the loss the father suffered from, it's indeed tragic and, dare I say, unecessary. It puts life into perspective in a terrible way.

@@voices4oppressed... Hi... The phrase that I highlighted is, in my own opinion, the most profound in the whole "poem". Such as the best virtue... Humility/modesty.
@@ginasilva1862 oh yes obviously! It's natural in humans to admire and love the humble... to see a person of so much power but walk so humble, or to see a king helping a lowly peasant, or a lowly small person standing against a tyrant ruler or a famously skilled warrior sacrificing himself to save an innocent. These are what humans deemed most worthy in the heart... To do noble deeds beyond the courage of the ordinary man!
Your father raised you to be the person you are now. They have done enough whatever they can they did it. Never ever demand more from people who have already done for you. Repay them back and live a happy life. That is what we all deserve. 😊
Forgive and rejoice. Most in this world live spiritually at lower levels of consciousness with increasingly few living at the next higher level. Perhaps roughly 20% of fathers would think to share such a poem with their son. Kipling's work is written at a high level of consciousness, probably beyond reason to love.

I used to be young, selfish, and at the time it seemed like it would be so easy to quit for him. “He just needs to use his will power” I thought. But in many cases, as well as in my dear brother’s case, it stems deeper than just a habit. My grandfather shared this poem with my father, and my father shared this to me and my siblings. This has become part of his legacy and I will share this one day with my kids. I’ve been trying to live my life this way for the past 20 years and I’m a better man because of it. If you’re searching for meaning or in a dark place, live your life one day at a time by these worlds and you’ll create a better future for your family and loved ones
I had to memorize this poem when I misbehaved in class as a kid in elementary school. I was sent out of class for timeout and I was told I can't come back in till I had it memorized and can recite it in front of the class. Never forgot it since and I have had it hung up in my office for every job I have held for the past 20+yrs. It is an all time favorite.
My favorite poem, I read this in the 8th grade. Been with me ever since”If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs”. This comes to me in situations in life, keeps me level along with the confidence of having the Lord Jesus Christ with me, making the journey much easier.
You are a wise man already. The Lord is with you and if anyone or everyone can’t get deep enough to comfort your soul, He will be right there. That is how I was able to undoubtedly know his Incalculable love for Us all.
"And blaming it on you" has always been something I get hung up on. I've always had the tendency to believe people when they say there's something wrong with me, but I'm getting better about that.
I listened to this poem many, many times, and the poem helps me stand a little taller .. each time I listen...thanks to a very special friend that I will always cherish.
I read this poem a few days ago under the influence of Italo Marsili. Well, today I'm 25 years old and I am a Brazilian man. Therefore, just like most men in this country, I didn't have father for influence my personality or character. But I have values that my mom and my relatives gave me. I consider this poem one of the greatest poems ever and a roadmap to life. My advice to young men is: Work, serve, be strong and don't piss off. God bless your week, month, year and life. Be strong. Be grateful.
Greetings from NYC. I like the "road map to life " statement. In the end, Character is all that matters if one cares about their human legacy. Be good, Do good and hurt no one while living your best life (perhaps not as eloquent as Mr Kipling, Lol). Gratitude in all things big and small, humility, and benevolence. I wish you Joao Perdro, all good things.
This is the poem I keep coming back to time and again for past 30 years. Now, it's picking up two lines and keeping it on your desk for a week has become a ritual. Very inspiring indeed!
Almost in tears, this poem reminds me of a very special high school teacher of mine. Mr Petty recited it so eloquently, it was put in our year book, beside his picture, and t was read at his funeral as well 🥰🥰

This is the most amazing and humble poem I’ve ever heard., No room for bragging, blaming, impatience, lying, hating, self doubting, and learning how to start all over again if failed. Not affecting yourself during good or bad times. Treating all the person equally. Having the same virtue regardless of the underlying situation. So much to learn !!
Wow! I thought I grasped most of it. Believe it or not, I just discovered this poem yesterday! What a masterpiece!! BEAUTIFUL! Your commentary helped me so much more! If you can fill an unforgiving minute with 60 seconds distance run. That took a minute... for me to get. (PUN INTENDED). 🥴
Gentleman.....To be a good man is hard, but, not impossible. It is worth the work. And worth the effort it takes. There are men who jump out of my memories. And I so loved and respected them. They are gone now, and I am old. But they are NEVER FORGOTTEN.
I think we may have waited too long. The under 40 people are too occupied with righteousness, shaming, cancelling, threatening, towards others and expecting the gentlest of behavior towards themselves. Call me cynical but theres nothing of quality in them. You couldnt pound the meaning of this beautiful poem into them. Their loss.

My favorite poem. I realize it's from father to son but when my grandfather passed I sent it to my Mom and it helped her immensely. For more than a year she did everything in her power to help him be as comfortable as possible.
August-11:
Just to keep you posted on how life under a new light can be blissful, what looked grim now looks grey and what looked grey now has light by itself.

Frenchie, my friend, I'm so glad you didn't give in. Don't EVER give in!
I once was in a bad place myself, but I resisted that pain. Now, years later, I grow more determined with each passing day to get up again, and again, and again no matter what anyone throws my way. IF
"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream-and not make dreams your master;
If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And-which is more-you’ll be a Man, my son!"
Thank you
An Excellent heartfelt poem...
I do love this poem.
Kipling wrote the poem in 1910 as a father's wish for his 12 year old son. 5 years later his only son died during WWI.
🙂❤️ Never lose hopes
But in those last moments, if these words were not spoken, could he have met death so well?
Death comes for us all. Some run a long race and some run a short race. It isn't about how long the race is but how you run it. I like to think that this helped his son face the life he was given. His words do not lose their meaning because his son's race was short.

Forgive and rejoice. Most in this world live spiritually at lower levels of consciousness with increasingly few living at the next higher level. " IF you can wait and not tiered by waiting"
A copy of this poem is hanged on my reception area more than 30 thirty years after I stumbled upon this gem of a message!
This was one of the first poems I had to learn in school. I can still quote it by heart and it is still inspirational.
Wish all fathers said this to their sons and daughters!
This is why there are poets!
I feel that King Mufasa is giving me advice this Christmas.
If you listen to it with an open mind, you will be surprised of its wisdom. ruclips.net/video/iyIwsilha_M/видео.html

A friend showed me this poem, he was an old army guy so I listened when he recommended poetry. It’s helped me through tough times in my life… words to live by.
This is one of my favorite poems too. Reminds me how everything in life is a test of character although it can be so overwhelming. The most powerful word although the smallest is 'if'.
Hello Joan 👋👋How are you doing and how's the weather condition over there...?
@@nelsonwayne6997 pretty murky. Weak people can't come up to light, they stay in the mud. That is there place. They know they are too weak and they hide.

This poem is more like a lion roaring
Both the sound and meaning.
❤️❤️❤️
A warriors ballad.
This poem needs to roar in every junior high and high school in America. Manhood is not something to repress, but something to shape for the good of society.
I watched this sitting outside in sun and when the Poem ended all I could see on my screen was the reflection of my face.
Never tire of listening to, or reading, this poem.
"'Don't give way to hating'' if just everyone followed this rule
"Hating" is such a waste of time.
That is so hard to do when you have witnessed the sheer evil and and duplicitious acts of some men.
@112358 853211 Wouldn't that be the other way around? A hater has no self control and becomes a coward.
@Ina Ne There is only you that needs to follow that rule. If you don’t give way to hating, those that hate will have nothing to feed on.
Hate is infectious, but so is a smile 😃
@@celsius418 Why do people so easily fall into hate? What is the reason for having more hate then normal on the earth? Could this be a sign that we are living in the last days?
This piece of art of living shall be heard over and over again, learnt by heart. Oh, poetry...what a gift to all of us, it keeps our Spirit alive, like a prayer.
This was on our walls in the military academy. Never paid much attention to it then, appreciate it more now.
This poem lifted me from lowest points in these past 5 years so many times.
"if you can make a heap of winnings, and risk it on one turn of pitch and toss, and lose, and start again at your beginnings and never breathe a word about your loss;" so profound. so deep. so moving. I wish I was made to study this poem after I saw some life like now, instead of putting it in our 10th std curriculum. I don't think 15-year-olds have the depth to understand the real meaning of this beautiful poem.
deep indeed
It takes terrible loss and heartache to understand this poem.
I have had this poem hanging in my home for 30years now , it's my favorite by Kipling.
These lines reminds me of my english teacher..he taught me this beautiful poetry as life lesson ..and this is the only thing which I believe and I learn to never quit the battle of life💟💟💟
I never knew I needed poetry until I needed poetry
If this poem can replace the almost 2 decades we spend in schools learning, our perspective of life would have been way much wiser in a relatively shorter time
Absolute Truth.
I had to memorize this in eighth grade and I'm so glad I did.
Today was the first time i listened to this without crying. Center and breathe
I can bear to hear this poem forever
I can recite it for my son who still unborn
I can hear him speak with my grandkids How he became a man because of its revealing.
This poem is one of the most powerful and enlightening things I've ever discovered . Don't know why only now I have sought to look at this poet ? I've been thinking constantly about HER yet I only looked into him today . After hearing the poem read it left me speechless . In the words of this one poem and the time it took to listen to it I learned more about the way she thinks than such a long time . It never ceases to amaze me how utterly BEAUTIFUL she is ! I listened to it this afternoon and I still don't know what to say ? I have been so naive . I'm so disappointed with myself and my actions it is sickening . Thinking of you now is leaving me unable to breathe . I have to back up and get out of this place or I will surely drown on mistakes made . I will leave with , AMAZING !!
I listen to this every morning at 5:30 am on my way to the gym and it never fails to give me goosebumps
I consider this poem by Kipling to be a high gift late in life. Maybe useful earlier, but at this age I understand/appreciate the truth of it. Thank you for the upload.
"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise"
"And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise", really effective and wise words
Yet he has written a poem one suspect is meant to be wise. And what would it be to "look too good" or "talk too wise"?
@@soslothful it would be like searching for something which do not exist
@@sagnikchowdhury9288 I don't understand what you are expressing. Can you clarify your point?
@@soslothful i am trying to talk too wise and yet fail to make you understand. Thus, it means that you should not talk or look too wise or good respectively.. and what i actually meant is that both looking good and talking wise is a part of beauty and intellect which is different for different people so exact "good look" and "wise talk" do not exist and yet we try to search it
If only each one of us could imbibe and inculcate even one line of this remarkable poem our world would be a great and better one.

WE WANT PEACE NOT THE WAR ( only English)07---03-:2022
1) We want peace, not war
One day there was peace in the sky.
The green leaves of the tree are golden in the moonlight. Why it changed.
For the war of HUNTERING TRANQUILITY
2) **I want peace not the WAR
The smell of gunpowder
Wailing cry
Death of all dreams
Why?
For self-destructive greed
3) Why is there so much
--- bloodshed?
Why so much violence
He who does, not know
Everyone's blood is red!
Made in the blood of that
-------misfortune
The clock of timeing.
What will the watch show?
Schedule- Sunrise?
4) I want peace, not war
Greed stirs up violence
Lost everything?
What without love
People are born?
But why so many deaths
So much bleeding
? Intelligent people's
Brutal maths
I want peace not war(5)
Who has not seen, has forgotten
Childhood smiles,
Immortal expression
Playfulness,
Joy and sorrow,
Advent of war, this,
It started
Day and night of terror
For what
WAR, for you!
I want peace, not war (6)
Murder, death, crying
Bullet cannon
Missile explosion
Scream of panic
Is this the WAR?
Rest, pleasent sleep
Love, the peace
Is these are all wrong?
The ultimate madness

Grow up and don't support narcissists, respect other people's rights --- even if they think differently, they have their right to think, as much as you do.
At least, basic human rights are a good starting point.
The rest is your choice. You can built your own paper boat, but you can't dictate to others to use it.
What do you think about Putin? Would you please ask him to aboard your paper boat? Would save us some headache.
He lost his son in the trench warfare of World War I. Don’t know if he wrote this poem before or after, but the son’s eyesight was bad enough that it disqualified him from serving. And the son went anyway, died very shortly after reaching the front. By all accounts an exemplary officer. Kipling served on the enlistment board. In today’s world would he have wangled his son a desk job?
We need more people and backbone like this in the present day.
We all need to be like this!

And how will you be judged in a hundred years? The evil that men do lives after them, the good is oft interred with their bones. That from Shakespeare three hundred years before Kipling. It is a constant of life, have some humility.
Take the good, discard the bad...

This is just what I needed to hear! I lost my mother in a car accident recently. I was born on her birthday, an American holiday. I deeply miss her. I take care of my father, who suffers from Alzheimer’s. My wife has been in the hospital for over a month with a severe brain illness. She is unable to talk. I’m not even sure if she understands anything. Just yesterday, my uncle died. I have to fly across the United States to pack up his belongings and bring him back to our family burial plot. Today, I found out I have Covid and I’m very sick. I needed strength to keep moving forward through it all. This poem is just what I needed to hear!
